GRADE 6 AND 7 WETLANDS STUDY On Monday 4 th of February, the Grade 6 and 7 children met at the Helderberg Nature Reserve to start their school day in celebration of World Wetlands Day (which took place on the 2 nd of February). Currently the Grade 6 children have being learning about Conservation and the threats to our environments. The Grade 7 pupils have been learning about biospheres and biomes. So this was the perfect opportunity to culminate all that they have being learning about so far. They split into groups and the Grade 6 children went to the Mike Woods Education Centre, where they were met by Esmay Josephs, an Environmental Education Co-ordinator. She presented a lesson on Wetlands, did a “hand” activity with them and a pop quiz. At the same time the Grade 7 children were conducting a self-study on the wetland near the restaurant. The two groups then swopped over, and the Grade 6 children conducted the wetland study in their Natural Science class groups. It was an interesting and enjoyable opportunity to take learning out of the classroom. In line with conservation, we made certain of reducing our carbon footprint by walking as a group back to school. VOLUME 4: 8 FEBRUARY 2019

The first stop of the Grade 6 Art journey this year has been in the country of Morocco. Miss Birch visited Morocco 10 years ago and decided to share her experience of the culture, through photographs, which the children are now using to create artworks. Carpet sellers; sweet Mint tea; lanterns; camels; mosques; tiles; markets and bicycles are just some of the beautiful iconic images from this fascinating country. The children have been privileged to work with Acrylic paints for the first time and it is wonderful to see their appreciation for this medium. Keep it up Grade 6s!

SH CHAMPIONSHIP GALA Well done to all our swimmers who participated at our Somerset House Championship Gala, especially to our Grade 1s, who swam in their very first gala. Our swimmers have been training hard and it was wonderful to see them in action. Many races went down to the wire and officials had to be on their toes to determine the top 3 places. We were also delighted that three records were broken on the day, one of which was 17 years old. Congratulations to: Boys U7 1 Length Breaststroke Rijk van Galen Old Record 38.37 (2016) New Record 37.53 Boys U10 1 Length Butterfly Eric Kotze Old Record 17.59 (2002) New Record 17.31 Boys U11 1 Length Breaststroke Lukas Ochsenbein Old Record 21.11 (2010) New Record 21.06

INDOOR HOCKEY LEAGUE Our Somerset House Girls Indoor Hockey teams both played their matches against Beaumont on Monday evening. The matches were played in a good competitive spirit and both teams played well. Our Grade 6 team won 4-0 and our Grade 7 team 3-0. Our boys played their first matches last week and had a great night. The Grade 6 boys played two touch matches against De Hoop and Beaumont first up and came out firing on all cylinders. Somerset House won both matches 4 – 0, well done boys. Our Grade 7s played their first match against a dominant Hendrik Louw team who caught us off guard, going down 5-1. Our team then bounced back brilliantly to beat Lochnerhof 3-2. A great match, boys! We play our final round of pool matches on Monday 11th February before the semi’s and finals take place on Mon 18th February.

TENNIS MATCH RESULTS: THURSDAY 31st JANUARY 2019

Team Opposition Score Comment

Girls U11

De Hoop B 0 - 6

Well done to Isabella and Eva Herbertson, Rose Maralack and Samantha Currie for playing their first matches representing our school. Despite the howling wind and the opposition being strong, the girls played with determination and showed good sportsmanship throughout. I was pleased to see some nice, long rallies being played too. Keep on trying your best, girls, I’m proud of you.

Boys U11

Lochnerhof 1 - 5

Our junior boys had some challenging matches against Lochnerhof. They played some fantastic games with most of their games going to deuce. They consistently kept the Somerset House spirit alive and never gave up. The boys played extremely well considering the extremely windy conditions and showed great sportsmanship throughout. Congratulations to all the boys as well as Ethan Pieber for securing a win.

Girls U13A

De Hoop A 0 - 6

Our girls had a challenging start to the season against the super talented De Hoop girls! Most commendable was the attitude with which they faced their opponents and so encouraging to watch the talent in the Helderberg Basin. We congratulate Zara Hingeston, Julia Brown, Esther Benson and Dani Currie for the incredible determination demonstrated on the court!

Boys U13A

Lochnerhof 6 - 1

Our 1st Team boys really had a good start for the first matches of the term. Everyone played very well. Most of the matches were dominated by Somerset House. We congratulate Aidan Herbertson for fighting very hard for each point that he played. It was a tough one for him, but he never gave up and showed so much character. That was great sportsmanship and great to watch. Well done to all the boys!!

Boys U13B

De Hoop 1 - 5

Welcome to Regan Wille who played his first competitive match for Somerset House. Despite being nervous, he soon got into the game, running for every ball and he played some brilliant shots. Unfortunately, his opponent made good use of his experience and won the match 4-3. Congratulations to Awsten Kelly who, after some exciting rallies, won his match 4 -1. As usual, Cayden Webb and Rousseau Theron played with determination and gave of their best. Unfortunately, De Hoop proved to be too strong and won the rest of the games. The boys displayed good sportsmanship and I am very proud of them. Keep it up, boys.
