GRADE 7 FAREWELL 2016

NEWSLETTER No 47/16 23rd November 2016

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL

November is coming to a rapid end – the 12th month of the year is almost upon us –

quite unbelievable – which leaves us only 10 days left to enjoy of this academic

year.

SENIOR PRIMARY PRIZE GIVING’S:

As indicated on the 2016 Year Planner, our school will be hosting two Prize Giving’s for the

Senior Primary section of the school this year. We have felt that with the increase in numbers

and extra classes now filtering through into the SP phase that this would be of benefit to all in

attendance, as hosting all the prize winners from the SP grades in the one Prize Giving, as in the

years before. This means that it is now compulsory for all the SP children to be present at

their respective Prize Giving’s, in full school uniform, as there will be the general certificates

handed out per class, as well as the cultural/sports honours for these age groups.

Please note the following as this is a formal academic event of the year:

Dress Code – smart (i.e. no shorts/slops, etc.)

Clean/neat uniform for learners – polished shoes

Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners to wear their blazers

Haircuts/neat

Children in all grades to be at school by 18h00, at the latest

Prize Giving starts at 18h30

Brothers/sisters attending either of the Prize Giving’s who are at NPS in Grade

3/4/5/6/7 must wear full neat school uniform

Expected duration of each Prize Giving: Please remember this is our first time in hosting

these two separate events.

Date: Thursday, 1st December – Grade 4 and 5 – starting 018h30 – end ±19h45

Date: Monday 5th December – Grade 6 and 7 - starting 018h30 – end ±20h15

Parking will also be allowed on the field in the demarcated area for both Prize Giving’s

These evenings are always respected as the highlight of the Academic Year with each class now

awarding First in Class, Progress Awards, Merits of the Year, 5 Special Awards, etc. hence the

need for all children to be present for any of these general recognitions.

Your support and attendance is greatly appreciated.

GRADE 7 FAREWELL:

We are really looking forward to the Grade 7 leaver’s function that takes place this Friday in

the Barbara Franken Hall. The evening takes on a different format this year with the learners

being introduced to a formal dinner format to start before turning to the dance floor to

celebrate with their fellow seniors. My appreciation is extended to the Grade 7 Leader, Mr

Brown, Grade 7 staff, and staff in attendance and especially to the Grade 7 Mother’s Committee

led by Mrs Robert, who have gone out of their way to decorate the hall and planning for the

evening.

The Grade 7 learners, we know, will be well groomed for this function as this evening is always a

highlight on their events calendar. Thank you to all partners involved in creating the memories

for our senior learners.

Another Proudly Northlands function – enjoy!

SLEEPING BEAUTY:

Further exciting news now follows since the last newsletter, with only 39 seats left for NPS at

the Sunday matinee show on 4 December at 14h30, at the Sneddon Theatre. Please ensure that

you do not delay in purchasing your family seats as this show features two of our staff

members, namely Mr Lyle Buxton and Miss Katy Moore in lead roles. We look forward to our

NPS staff warming our hearts with their amazing singing and acting talents – Northlands will be

in full support!!

Congratulations are also extended to Miss Moore on her honour of being awarded the “Best

Supporting Actress in a Musical” at the very recent Durban Theatre Awards function for the

Dramatic Arts. We are so proud of both of you. Please remember to contact our Mother’s

Committee Chairlady, Mrs Dudas on 082 826 0822 or email at [email protected] to

ACADEMIC REPORT

Reading is like everything else in life, the more you do it the better you get. It is

really important to keep children reading during the holidays so that they keep the

momentum going and don’t struggle when they get back to school. Listed below are

a few ideas to increase your children’s holiday reading.

Create a Holiday Tradition of Reading:

One of the best ways to keep the kids interested in reading during the holidays is to create

holiday traditions of reading fun books during these special times. By picking really interesting

books with holiday themes and making it a family experience, kids begin to have

positive thoughts about holiday family reading traditions. Making sure that they get at least one

book as a holiday gift is another way of providing a natural opportunity to read.

Involve the Kids in Practical Reading Experiences:

One of the best ways to keep the children engaged in reading is to integrate everyday activities

into the reading experience. For instance, if you are baking something, have the kids take turns

reading the ingredients of the recipe. Having them read Christmas cards as they arrive in the

mail is another great way to involve them. These types of activities don’t even register in the

kids minds as reading time.

The Opportunity to Show-Off:

Another great opportunity to get kids involved reading is to let them show holiday visitors how

well they can read. Kids usually love the chance to demonstrate their reading skills to friends

and family. By packaging reading opportunities as fun family events and natural everyday things

to do, it will not even occur to your kids that you are trying to keep their reading skills sharp.

Happy reading!

Mrs S Gow

ACADEMIC SUPPORT PILLAR

Continuing with the topic of reading, another vital component of reading is

vocabulary development.

“It is very important for children to learn the meaning and pronunciation of words, and actively

expand their knowledge of written and spoken words and how those words are used. The larger

and stronger a child’s spoken vocabulary, the more background knowledge that child will bring to

his or her reading experience.

Ways you can help your children develop a rich vocabulary are:

❁ Talk about a variety of things with your child. Take family trips to the park, beach, farm

...wherever, and talk about what you see. This will expose your child to new words. Have dinner

together as a family where each member can talk about their day.

❁ When reading with your child, highlight the vocabulary in the book. Talk about new words.

Since they are in the context of the story, they will be more meaningful and easier for your

child to remember.

❁ Read a variety of books with your children, including joke books. Not only are joke books fun,

but humour often plays on words and can teach your child figurative and multiple meanings of

words.’

Exposure to different topics also keeps things interesting and can teach you a little more about

your child. Mrs C Fuller

CULTURAL PILLAR

CULTURAL PILLAR

Friday 25th November will be the final Cultural Pillar activities for the year. The

choirs and band will continue to practise, as they still have performances ahead of

them.

Thank you to all the learners who participated in the various activities and the staff for their

dedication and hard work.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Skills and emotional maturity are not specifically related to chronological age and cannot be forced; they are a result of a combination of maturation and experience. Children need lots of opportunity and guidance to develop these skills. END OF YEAR PARTY AND CARETAKER’S COLLECTION Please take note of the end of year party request for a ‘secret’, reading book gift, for your child and the caretaker gift box letters. Please read them both carefully, and comply as soon as you can. Thank you, the books need to be in by Monday latest. The party is on Wednesday 30 November. We also take this opportunity to thank a past mom, who has donated the lovely big basins we will use to put the goodies into, for our special helpers. EAST COAST RADIO TOY STORY 2016 Our collection boxes at Northlands have arrived and we urge all our children to buy and place a new toy into the boxes as part of the outreach programme. These do not get wrapped, as they will need to be sorted into different age levels by the Radio station staff, on collection from us. No toy is too small or too big – they will all find a way to the perfect little owner for Christmas joy. CHRISTMAS MUG ORDERS If you ordered these, please collect them from Pam in the office. HOLIDAY CLUB Please collect forms from Pam in the office. PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE NO HOLIDAY CLUB IN JANUARY. TERM FOUR PAYMENTS – Please pay these amounts to Pam as soon as possible Please ensure all payments for Term 4, including school fees and extra-murals, are up to date.
