Overall ExpectationsStudents will:• simplify numerical and polynomial expressions in one variable, and solve first degree equations (NAV.02)• demonstrate an understanding of constant rate of change and its connection to linear relations (LRV.03)• connect various representations of a linear relation, and solve problems using the representations (LRV.04)Specific ExpectationsStudents will:• describe the relationship between the algebraic and geometric representations of a single-variable term up to degree three [i.e., length, which is one dimensional, can be represented by x; area, which is two dimensional, can be represented by (x)(x) or x2; volume, which is three dimensional, can be represented by (x)(x)(x), (x2)(x), or x3 (NA2.03)• solve first-degree equations with non-fractional coefficients, using a variety of tools and strategies (NA2.07)• substitute into algebraic equations and solve for one variable in the first degree (NA2.08)• describe the meaning of the rate of change and the initial value for a linear relation arising from a realistic situation, and describe a situation that could be modeled by a given linear equation (LR3.05)• determine values of a linear relation by using a table of values, by using the equation of the relation, and by interpolating or extrapolating from the graph of the relation (LR4.01)• determine other representations of a linear relation arising from a realistic situation, given one representation (LR4.03)• determine graphically the point of intersection of two linear relations, and interpret the intersection point in the context of an application (LR4.06)
