Classroom Activities/Lesson Plan Nonfiction Article 1: “Cities and Towns Have Laws” Students need exposure to both fictional and nonfictional materials. This article presents students with informational text related to the unit topic. Read aloud the article, “Cities and Towns Have Laws.” This article introduces why cities and towns have laws. Articles are presented in advanced, higher and regular formats. The advanced article is in a text format. Higher and regular articles are presented in both a text-only and symbol-supported format. Fill-in comprehension questions are also in three leveled formats. Level 3 is text only. Level 2 is symbol-supported. Level 1 is written in sentence strip format, allowing students to select from multiple choices or one errorless picture choice. Choose the appropriate text and comprehension questions on the basis of each student’s abilities and needs. Introduce the article by discussing how cities and towns have laws that are like rules at school. Read the article aloud to model fluency. Discuss why we have laws. Ask, “What would happen if we did not have laws? What laws help keep us safe?” Support reading by using text to speech and the communication board. Use independent or paired reading to focus on individual student abilities in reading with text or supported-text versions. Build comprehension with questions and discussion of the topic.
