Are You My Kitten?

“Are you my kitten?” Kelly asked. The kitten was black with white paws. Kelly wasn’t sure. She saw another kitten. It was gray with a white face. “Are you my kitten?” Kelly still wasn’t sure.

Kelly looked at a third kitten. It was gray and black and white all over. It curled up beside its brother and sister in Mrs. Bell’s yard. Mrs. Bell’s cat had had three kittens.

The kitten touched Kelly’s hand with a soft paw. “You are my kitten!” Kelly said. “I will take you home. I will feed you and give you water. I will give you a place to sleep. I will play with you. You are definitely my kitten!”

Lesson 13 Cook Up a Surprise

“Mom,” said Amy. “Next week is Ms. Carter’s birthday. She likes flowers and dogs and cooking. What surprise can our class make?”

Mom had the best idea. The next day, Amy told everyone. “That’s a great idea!” they said.

The next Tuesday was Ms. Carter’s birthday. After lunch, Amy raised her hand. Then the whole class said, “Happy birthday, Ms. Carter!”

Luis handed Ms. Carter a big book. On the front was a drawing by Jane. It showed a colorful fruit salad. The title of the book was “Our Best Recipes.”

Ms. Carter opened the book. She saw a recipe on each page. There were recipes for many things. The children had gotten recipes from their parents. The recipes were for their favorite foods. They had put them in the book and drawn pictures.

“This is a wonderful surprise,” said Ms. Carter. “I’ll treasure it forever.”

Make Your Case The students work together to make Ms. Carter a surprise birthday gift. Write a sentence to tell how they feel about Ms. Carter.

Underlined: flowers, dogs, cooking. Circled: cooking.

Lesson 8 Help Yourself and Others

Have you cleaned out your toy chest or closet lately? You probably have some clothes that are too small. You have toys that you don’t play with. Don’t keep old clothes and toys. Give them to someone who needs them.

Yesterday I cleaned my closet. I tried on a sweater. Did it shrink? No, I had grown. After I sorted clothes, I looked through toys. There were three games, four stuffed animals, and a train set that I never play with.

Soon I had a pile of clothes and toys. My mom and I put them in bags and took them into town. We put them in a huge bin. Someone will collect the things. Then they’ll give them to people who need them.

Giving away unneeded clothes and toys is a great idea. You help others. You recycle valuable things. Everyone should clean out, give away, and recycle!
