Herbal MedicineFor thousands of years, people have taken plants and plantbased substances

as medicines. Such cures are still used more commonly than modern drugs inmany regions, with some 80 percent of the population in certain developingcountries relying on herbal medicines. ( 26 ), their effectiveness is largelyunsupported by sciencebased evidence. Many Western doctors thereforediscourage their use, especially for seriously ill people. For such patients, usingscientifically proven drugs can mean the difference between life and death.

Research has highlighted other problems, too. Scientists reviewed over 50studies on herbal medicines and found that the chemicals they contain can causeorgan damage, and that these medicines can be harmful when used in combinationwith other drugs. The scientists say such effects are generally not reported in thesocieties where the medicines are commonly used. This leads patients to( 27 ). In fact, the majority of these people see no reason to even tell theirdoctors they are using the medicines, putting them at risk of dangerous side effectswhen the medicines interact with doctorprescribed drugs.

Supporters of herbal medicines say the amount of data from clinical studies isincreasing, and this can help people understand which medicines are safe. Theyalso feel that herbal medicines and modern, doctorprescribed drugs ( 28 ).Instead of viewing herbal medicines as an alternative to standard drugs, which areoften necessary in emergencies or to fight serious infections, people should insteaduse them to maintain overall health and wellness. If taken properly, supporterssay, both traditional and modern medicines can be safely used in combination witheach other.

Memory and LanguageThe outcomes of court cases often depend on evidence given by people who

witnessed crimes or accidents. But can their memories always be trusted? In onefamous psychology experiment, students were divided into groups and shown avideo of a car accident. One group was asked, “About how fast were the carsgoing when they smashed into each other?” For another group, the words“smashed into” were replaced with “hit.” The results showed that those who wereasked the question with the words “smashed into” estimated an average speed of65.2 kmh, compared with 54.7 kmh for those asked with “hit.” This demonstratesthat the descriptions witnesses give can depend on ( 29 ).

In a followup experiment, students were shown another video of an accidentand asked similar questions using the words “smashed” and “hit.” This time theywere also asked if they had noticed any broken glass. The windows wereundamaged in the video, but the students who had been asked the question using“smashed” were far more likely to report having seen broken glass. This tendencyis even more disturbing because the students had ( 30 ).

Watching a video of a car crash, however, is not the same as being present atthe scene of one, critics argue. They say that the students’ memories were moreeasily influenced because they did not have the emotional experience of seeing theaccident in person. ( 31 ), the students were likely less motivated to giveaccurate answers. Other studies have also shown that manipulative questions haveless effect on people who have witnessed real crimes, suggesting that theexperiments’ conditions may have played a role in shaping the results.

Impostor SyndromeMany people will experience “impostor syndrome” at some point in their lives.

Those who are affected by this condition have trouble accepting or believing in their ownsuccess, no matter how capable or experienced they may be. Often, they think theirachievements are due to good fortune or outside circumstances rather than their actualability. Impostor syndrome affects people of various backgrounds working in many fields, and it can have different consequences for each person. Some feel they must prove theirworth by working far harder than they need to. Others fear they will lose their job whentheir supposed lack of skill is discovered, so they distance themselves from colleagues asmuch as possible.

The cause of impostor syndrome has been debated by experts. It may havesomething to do with people’s basic personality traits, such as a tendency to worry, or itcould possibly have its roots in an individual’s upbringing. For instance, when childrenare constantly praised, even for minor achievements, it can cause them to lose faith intheir real abilities. Impostor syndrome can also arise in adulthood due to factors out of aperson’s control. One such factor is institutional discrimination, where the atmosphere ina work or academic environment makes people who are not of a certain race, gender, orother characteristic stand out.

Several studies have shown that individuals in minority groups who report feelingsof “impostorism” also experience higher levels of anxiety and depression. This may bedue not only to discrimination but also to a lack of representation among professors, managers, and other authority figures. According to psychology professor Thema BryantDavis, when people in the working world do not see others of their gender or race inpositions of power, there is no “signal of the possibility of advancement.” Without this, itis often difficult to have selfconfidence and maintain a positive attitude in life.

(32) What is one effect that “impostor syndrome” may have on workers affected by it?1 They feel that they have no choice but to do extra work in order tocompensate for their coworkers’ weaknesses.

2 They become afraid they will be fired and attempt to isolate themselvesfrom their coworkers.

3 It becomes easier for them to dishonestly take credit for the achievementsof their coworkers.

4 It can cause them to exaggerate their experience and abilities whencommunicating with their coworkers.

(33) One possible cause of impostor syndrome is when1 people have difficulty finding a job, mainly due to companies discriminatingagainst them.

2 adults tend to worry more than they should about criticism they receivedwhen they were young.

3 companies refuse to seriously consider workers’ claims that they are feelinganxious or worried.

4 children are given praise too frequently, even for things that are not actuallydifficult to do.

(34) According to Thema BryantDavis, which of the following is true?1 Individuals who avoid discrimination at school are less likely to haveimpostor syndrome when they start working.

2 Minorities are more likely to suffer from impostor syndrome if they aretreated in the same way as those in the majority.

3 People who do not see others like themselves in higher positions are morelikely to lose hope that they will be promoted.

4 Minorities are less likely to experience discrimination in schools with agreater amount of diversity.

Climate Change and the SámiThe Sámi people, who are native to the Arctic regions of Europe, have historically

made a living through fur trading and reindeer farming. However, the reindeer herds theyrely on are under severe pressure due to climate change and the resulting habitat loss.Unstable temperatures in winter cause snow to melt and then freeze into ice, whichprevents reindeer from accessing the plants they need for food. Though this has alsooccurred in the past, rapid climate change has caused it to happen more frequently. Dueto this, reindeer herds are losing more animals to starvation, and lack of nutrition hasreduced birthrates. Furthermore, as global warming makes northern areas more accessible, companies are moving into traditional Sámi territory to pursue mining, carry out oil andgas exploration, and promote tourism. This has further restricted the food available to theSámi’s reindeer herds, and many Sámi worry that increased activity in their traditionallands could end their way of life altogether.

The decline of reindeer herds has caused many Sámi to experience financial andemotional difficulties. Some teenagers and young adults have fled to cities for work, andthese urban Sámi have found themselves alienated and the target of discrimination due totheir heritage. With their lives uprooted and their cultural traditions being lost withoutaccess to vibrant Sámi social groups, many suffer from significant mental healthproblems. The problem extends to traditional Sámi communities, with higherthanaveragesuicide rates reported, especially among young males. Few seek help, though, as mentalhealth is a taboo topic for the Sámi. Although exact numbers are unknown, surveyssuggest that most Sámi have a relative or friend who has committed suicide.

Efforts are under way to tackle some of these problems, however. Social programs, for example, are being introduced to offer emotional support to young Sámi andencourage discussion about the discrimination they experience. Mental health issues intraditional Sámi communities, though, are often said to be based on economic uncertaintyand worries related to the impact of climate change. To address these fears, politicianshave been listening to the Sámi and taking greater care to consider the potentialconsequences that government decisions may have on their communities. By giving theSámi a way to influence decisions that affect them directly, the stress and hardshipassociated with environmental or economic decline can be reduced. More importantly, itis hoped that the Sámi themselves can have greater control over maintaining theirtraditional way of life.

(35) Climate change has affected the Sámi lifestyle by1 reducing many plant species that the Sámi rely on as a source of food whenreindeer are not available.

2 impacting both the living areas and food sources of the animals that theSámi depend on economically.

3 forcing the Sámi to adopt farming methods that are financially lessrewarding than their traditional ones.

4 attracting corporations that have put pressure on the Sámi to give up theirland for oil and gas exploration.

(36) According to the passage, what difficulties are the Sámi facing?1 The organizations that provide financial support in their communities havebeen negatively affected by changes to their society.

2 Sámi who have been forced to move from rural regions to urban areas arechoosing to reject their culture in order to be accepted.

3 The conflict between younger Sámi and the older generation regardingreindeer farming is leading many to suffer from mental health issues.

4 Younger Sámi are struggling with mental health issues caused by isolationfrom their families and the loss of their cultural traditions.

(37) What is being done to help the Sámi?1 Concerns expressed by the Sámi are being used to shape governmentpolicies and actions as a way to avoid causing them further harm.

2 Volunteer groups are being established to promote wider understanding ofSámi culture throughout countries with large Sámi populations.

3 Greater efforts are being made to encourage younger Sámi to enter politicsand represent their communities in local governments.

4 Financial support is being offered to Sámi suffering from mental healthissues that arise due to the stress of living in urban areas.

Lemons and the MafiaThe organizedcrime group known as the Mafia first appeared on the island of Sicily

in the 1800s. In the years since its emergence, its illegal activities, which include briberyand fraud, have become well known, but its origins were unclear. Recent research by agroup of economic historians has, however, uncovered an unexpected connection betweenthe Mafia and a common fruit.

In the 1700s, it was discovered that lemon juice prevented a deadly disease calledscurvy, leading to greatly increased demand for lemons, which caused revenues from thefruit to skyrocket. Sicily was one of the few places where lemons could grow, but lemonfarming was limited to certain locations on the island due to the fruit’s sensitivity to frost. In addition, the shift to largescale lemon growing required huge financial investments tobuild facilities and develop irrigation systems. High walls were also constructed to protectlemon trees from thieves, as without such safeguards, an entire year’s harvest could gomissing overnight.

Rising demand for the fruit saw profits continue to increase in the 1800s, but thesituation was complicated by the fact that Sicily was ruled by kings with ancestral ties tothe Spanish royal family. The rulers were regarded as outsiders, and unpopular policieslike forced military service caused dissatisfaction and unrest among the population. Localpoverty and a lack of public funding, particularly in rural areas, led to an increase incrime. This forced farmers to find their own way to deal with the threat of lemon theft. They began employing local strongmen, who eventually became the Mafia, to protecttheir orchards, offering lemons as payment.

While the Mafia may have originally provided a legitimate service that kept lemoncrops safe from thieves, that did not stay true for long. It began forcing farmers to acceptits services against their will, using violence and intimidation when it encounteredresistance. Mafia members then began acting as middlemen between sellers and exporters, manipulating the market to ensure substantial profits. They soon forced their way intoother areas of the industry, such as transportation and wholesaling, and eventually theirpower grew to cover all aspects of lemon production. Some politicians attempted toaddress these activities, but widespread government corruption allowed the Mafia toextend its influence to many areas of politics and law enforcement.

According to researcher Arcangelo Dimico, one of the historians who researched theconnection between lemons and the Mafia, the group’s rise is an example of the “resourcecurse.” He explains that the combination of a source of extreme wealth together withweak social and political systems can lead to the rise of conflicts or illegal activities, whichcan leave a country worse off economically than if it had not possessed the valuableresource in the first place. Examples can be seen in modern times, such as wealth fromdiamonds funding the growth of private armies in some African nations. Like Sicily’sMafia, these groups often employ criminal methods to gain control over resources andlocal populations. Using Dimico’s study, economists, sociologists, and political scientistscan better understand this phenomenon and help governments fight against it.

(38) What is one difficulty Sicilian farmers faced in the 1700s?1 While lemons had once been believed to cure a serious disease, profits fromgrowing the fruit declined when this was discovered not to be true.

2 Although large amounts of money could be earned from growing lemons, setting up a lemon farm could only be done at great expense.

3 Because of Sicily’s unpredictable climate, farmers new to growing lemonsregularly had to throw away large amounts of bad lemon crops.

4 Due to rules about where lemons could be grown, purchasing enough landto make the business profitable was a serious issue.

(39) Which of the following statements best describes the situation that led to therise of the Mafia?

1 The government was unable to provide Sicilians with suitable publicservices, causing some private citizens to find ways to protect their crops.

2 Owners of lemon farms refused to trade with those who supported Sicily’sforeign rulers, causing the economy to worsen and crime to rise.

3 People were unhappy about profits from Sicilian lemons going to theSpanish royal family and did not mind when thieves stole from wealthyfarmers.

4 The government’s desire to profit from lemon farming caused it to acceptillegal payments from farmers who were connected with criminals.

(40) The Mafia used its involvement with lemon farmers to1 control both the people who grew lemons and those who sold themoverseas as part of its way to make more money and increase its power.

2 successfully generate greater profits from the lemon industry by demandingthat farmers grow larger amounts of lemons.

3 persuade a few politicians to ignore its criminal activities, despiteoverwhelming opposition from the government.

4 gain control over the entire lemon industry, despite being unable to obtainthe cooperation of key members of the police.

(41) Arcangelo Dimico would likely say that the “resource curse”1 is more closely related to the poor economic performance of a nation thanto the level of support its government provides for social issues.

2 occurs when governments are willing to overlook criminal activities as longas they help boost the country’s supply of resources.

3 is caused by a country’s resources being overvalued by its leaders and thenfailing to generate the amount of profit that was expected.

4 can happen due to unethical groups taking advantage of a lack ofgovernance to profit from valuable national assets.
