• The capacity to obtain, understand, and act on basic health-related information, to make appropriate health decisions.

• Inherent that the patient can comprehend and use the information in a meaningful way

• Education, reading level, and other demographic factors do not accurately predict health literacy. (Shah, West, Bremmeyr, Savoy-Moore; Welch, VanGeest, Caskey, 2011).

Document Literacy

• Measures how well an individual can locate and use information in forms, schedules, charts, graphs and other tables of information.

• Example: the patient is told to check his blood sugar 30 minutes before meals and before bed. If the number is higher than 200 he should call the physician’s office.

Numeracy (Quantitative) Literacy

• Measures the use of numbers found in printed materials.

• Different from prose and document literacy because in addition to using text, math is used to get the required information.

• Example: a patient is given a prescription for a medication to be taken at a specific dose twice daily.

Background

• Low health literacy is associated with: • Reduced likelihood of compliance with medical

instructions and adherence to prescribed treatment

• Underuse of preventive services • Delayed presentation and diagnosis with

increased hospitalizations and length of stay • Higher medical costs • Poorer health outcomes (Shah, West, Bremmeyr, Savoy-Moore; Welch, VanGeest, Caskey, 2011).

• Poor parental literacy is associated with poor health outcomes in children (DeWalt et al., 2007).

• Numeracy, one component of health literacy, has not been adequately evaluated.

Purpose

To assess the health literacy of both

English and Spanish-speaking parents of ill children seen the RADIT (Rapid Assessment and Discharge in Triage) area of the emergency department (ED) prior to the development of educational materials.

Methods – Sample & Setting

• 150 parents of children admitted to the RADIT area in the St. Joseph emergency department were eligible for participation.

• Inclusion criteria • Children 0-17 years of age • No delay in care • A minimum of 25 parents must be Spanish-

speaking.
