WEEK 1: TABLES

TOPIC: 2 TIMES

Name: __________________________________________ Date: _________________________

FACTS/TIPS

2 Times Table

Double it! Two times a number simply means add the number twice.

2 x 2 is actually 2 + 2 and 2 x 6 is the same as 6 + 6.

We can also skip count in twos to arrive at our answer, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8...

2x1=2 or 1 group of two

2x2=4 or 2 groups of two

2x3=6 or 3 groups of two

2x4=8 or 4 groups of two

2x5=10 or 5 groups of two

2x6= 12 or 6 groups of two

2x7=14 or 7 groups of two

2x8=16 or 8 groups of two

2x9=18 or 9 groups of two

2x10=20 or 10 groups of two

2x11=22 or 11 groups of two

2x12=24 or 12 groups of two

WEEK 1: NOTATION & NUMERATION

SUB-TOPIC: SKIP COUNTING

Name: __________________________________________ Date: _________________________

FACTS/TIPS: Skip counting has a pattern.

To identify patterns, you can either add or subtract.

PRACTICE EXAMPLES:

Can we identify the patterns below and insert the missing values?

2, 4, 6, 8, ___ = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10

We keep adding 2s, therefore the missing value is 10.

5, 10, 15, 20, 25, ___ = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30

We keep adding 10s, therefore the missing value is 30.

3, 6, 9, ___, ____, 18 = 3, 6, 9, 12, 15

We keep adding 3s, therefore the missing values are 12 and 15.

14, 12, 10, 8, ___ = 14, 12, 10, 8, 6

We keep subtracting 2s, therefore the missing value is 6.

SUB-TOPIC: SKIP COUNTING

Name: __________________________________________ Date: _________________________

FACTS/TIPS: When counting in tens, the numbers create a pattern

and the digit in the ones column remains the same.

PRACTICE EXAMPLES:

Look at the examples below and say which number would come

next.

a) 10, 20, 30, 40, ____. If we keep adding 10, the next

number will be 50.

b) 110, 120, 130, 140, ____. The next number will be 150.

ON YOUR OWN

Complete the sequences by filling in the missing numbers.

1. 70, 80, ______, _______

2. 50, 60, ______, ________

3. 90, 100, 110, _____, ______

4. 510, 520, 530, ______, ________

5. 30, 40, 50, _______, ________

Name: __________________________________________ Date: _________________________

FACTS/TIPS: When counting in 10s, the numbers create a pattern

and the digit in the tens place would always increase or decrease

by 1.

PRACTICE EXAMPLES

Look at the pattern below and state what you observe.

10, 20, 30, 40, 50- Here the digit in the tens place is increasing by 1

and the digit in the ones place remains the same.

22, 32, 42, 52 - Here the digit in the tens place is increasing by 1

and the digit in the ones place remains the same.

65, 55, 45, 35 - Here the digit in the tens place is decreasing by

1and the other digit remains the same.

WEEK 1: NOTATION & NUMERATION

SUB-TOPIC: EXPANDED NOTATION

Name: __________________________________________ Date: _________________________

FACTS/TIPS

Expanded notation is when we write out the number by showing the

value of each digit. Place value or arrow cards are a great way of

showing the value of each digit.

Note: Expanded notation can be written in both number and word

forms.

PRACTICE EXAMPLE

Standard form 1 576

Standard form 7 043

Expanded/number form = 7 000 + 0 + 40 + 3 or 7 000 +40 + 3

Word form = 7 thousands + 4 tens + 3 ones or 7 thousands + 0 hundreds + 4 tens + 3 ones

+

and word forms.

FACT/TIP

Numeral expander shows how a number can be expressed in

different ways. It is made by folding strips of paper.

PRACTICE EXAMPLES:

John was asked to write the number to represent 52 hundreds, 4 tens

and 3 ones or five thousand two hundred forty-three.

This is what he wrote 5 243.

Is John correct? Yes, he is.

5 243 is actually 5 000 + 200 + 40 + 3 or 5 200 + 40 + 3 or

5 thousands +2 hundreds + 4 tens +3 ones

Page 19: GRADE THREE CONSOLIDATED WORKSHEET

ON YOUR OWN

Cut 2 sets of four strips of paper. Fold each strip to show the numbers

below in expanded form.

(a) 2 367

(b) 9 876

Use the template below as a guide.

Complete the table below.

HOMEWORK

Answer the following questions.

(a) Tim says 4 329 in expanded notation is written as 4 000 + 3

000 + 29. Is he correct? __________

(b) Now he says that 5 879 is written as 5 000 + 800 + 70 + 9. Is he

correct this time? _____________

(c) Look carefully at the number 9 876. Why do we not expand

it as 9 + 8 + 7 + 6?
