INTRODUCTION This is one of a series of guides available from the Teaching, Learning & Assessment with Technology series.  Please note, your faculty may have other approaches or use different tools, contact your Faculty TEL Officer for more information on local provision.

The Turnitin service allows learners to submit their assignments to an online platform that checks whether their submission cites sources correctly and is formatted using the appropriate referencing and style guidelines to avoid issues around plagiarism.

Feedback Studio allows teachers to add rubrics for consistent marking. Students can access their grade and comments after the post-date has passed, marked assignments can be downloaded in PDF format for archival and moderation.

This document covers:

• Why use Rubrics?

• Turnitin Rubric Types (Standard Rubric; Custom Rubric Qualitative Rubric)

• Accessing the Rubric Manager in Turnitin Feedback Studio

• Creating a Rubric in Turnitin Feedback Studio

• Attaching a Rubric to a Turnitin Assignment

• Marking using a Rubric

• Importing and Exporting Grademark Rubrics

• Student View: Reviewing an Assignment with a Rubric

Important information

The instructions on the next few pages cover the basics of rubrics and leaving feedback on an assignment. You should always check, in the first instance, with your faculty or department before proceeding for local arrangements regarding assessments as local practices may vary.

Rubrics are advanced grading forms used for criteria-based assessment. The rubric consists of a set of criteria. For each criterion, several descriptive levels are provided. A numerical grade is assigned to each of these levels.

Every rubric used must adhere to University Marking Framework and ensure that the rubric has been approved by the department/faculty for use with assessments

Accessibility considerations

Consider the potential diverse accessibility needs of your students when using Rubrics. Detailed information on Turnitin Accessibility is available from: https://www.turnitin.com/about/accessibility.

QUICK GUIDE

1. Turnitin Rubric Types

• Standard Rubric: The standard rubric allows you to select a number or criteria they wish to evaluate and give each criterion a percentage weighting. The user then decides on the scale of correctness and the relative value of the criteria. The rubric can be used to automatically provide a grade, calculating the criteria percentages and chosen scale point.

• Custom Rubric: The custom rubric allows you to assign a point value to each criterion and distribute those points across the scale of correctness. Each criterion/scale option can have an individual numerical input. The rubric can be used to automatically provide a grade. The maximum value for the Custom rubric will be the sum of the highest value entered in each of the criteria rows.

• Qualitative Rubric: The qualitative rubric allows users to create a criterion/scale based rubric as above, but not based on any numerical input. Feedback is provided for students, but a separate grade can be added.

2. Accessing the Rubric Manager in Turnitin Feedback Studio

1. Create a Turnitin link as usual and in the GradeMark Options drop-down either select the Rubric from the menu or click Launch Rubric Manager to review rubrics / create a new one.

DETAILED GUIDE

1. Why use Rubrics?

Using a rubric provides several advantages to both instructors and students.

Consistent grading:

• Grading according to a clear and descriptive set of criteria that is designed to reflect the weight of each of the objectives in the assignment. This ensures that the instructor’s grading standards don’t change over time as it is difficult to maintain consistency.

• Grading rubrics are helpful in courses that have multiple graders as it can help ensure consistency across graders and can minimize any systematic bias that can be introduced between graders.

Reduce the time spent on grading:

• Using rubrics can reduce the time spent on grading by allowing instructors to refer to the rubric description associated with a score rather than having to write long comments and also reduce instructor’s uncertainty while grading.

Know the strengths and weaknesses of the class:

• Rubrics can help instructors get a clearer picture of the strengths and weaknesses of the class. By logging the scores, reports can give the number of students scoring below an acceptable level on each criteria.

• Instructors can identify the skills or concepts lacking in the class and those that need more instructional time and student effort.

Valuable to students:

• A rubric can help instructors to communicate to the student detailed requirements and acceptable performance standards for an assignment.

• Rubrics can help students monitor and assess their progress as they work toward clearly designated objectives. Students can more easily identify the strengths and weaknesses of their work if the assignments are graded and returned with the rubric. Students will appreciate the transparency, as well as they can direct their efforts accordingly.

2. Turnitin Rubric Types

Rubric Type Description

Standard Rubric

• The standard rubric allows you to select a number or criteria they wish to evaluate and give each criterion a percentage weighting e.g. Knowledge (30%), Understanding (30%), Application (30%) and Referencing (10%). The user then decides on the scale of correctness and the relative value of the criteria e.g. Excellent (4), Good (3), Satisfactory (2), and Poor (1).

• The rubric can be used to automatically provide a grade, calculating the criteria percentages and chosen scale point.

Custom Rubric

• The custom rubric allows you to assign a point value to each criterion and distribute those points across the scale of correctness. Each criterion/scale option can have an individual numerical input.

• The rubric can be used to automatically provide a grade. The maximum value for the Custom rubric will be the sum of the highest value entered in each of the criteria rows.

Qualitative Rubric

• The qualitative rubric allows users to create a criterion/scale based rubric as above, but not based on any numerical input. Feedback is provided for students, but a separate grade can be added.
