FINANCIAL SERVICESThe Office of Student Financial Services advises all SLU students seeking financial support beyond assistantships or fellowships. All students who seek additional funding should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In addition to assistantships and fellowships offered by the University, there are several other options for students to pursue financial assistance.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICESThe Office of International Services helps international students transition to the United States and supports them during their stay. The International Services staff advises students on academics, U.S. culture and immigration laws, and hosts activities and workshops on these topics. International Services also offers an international student lounge, located in the Center for Global Citizenship.

GRADUATE STUDENT ASSOCIATIONThe Graduate Student Association (GSA) at SLU is an interdisciplinary organization committed to advocating for the graduate community, supporting students’ professional development and serving as a social network for all graduate students. GSA assists graduate students with partial travel funding to annual academic conferences and hosts the annual Graduate Research Symposium, where SLU graduate students can present their cutting-edge research and compete for various awards.

RENOWNED FACULT YNinety-nine percent of tenured and tenure-track SLU faculty members hold the highest degree in their fields. SLU boasts 46 endowed chairs and 24 named professorships, and it is one of nine Catholic institutions recognized for “high” or “higher” research activity by the Carnegie Foundation.

During 2014-2015, SLU’s Medical Center’s researchers in health sciences received 243 awards for over $35.5 million from agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Centers for Disease Control and other government sources, as well as private industries, associations and foundations.

SLU researchers in areas outside of health sciences received awards through grants, contracts and subcontracts from federal government agencies, associations, foundations and private sources, generating over $4 million during 2014-2015.

STUDENT RESOURCES We understand that committing to a graduate education is an important decision and a significant investment of time, energy and financial resources. We strive to support our students through mentoring, research resources and events, as well as to guide them through the process of securing financial assistance.

ASSISTANTSHIPSSaint Louis University offers three categories of graduate assistantships: teaching, research and general. Typically, assistants work less than 20 hours per week and are awarded stipends, tuition scholarships, health insurance and extended library privileges. Check with your department for specifics.

A teaching assistant may serve as the primary instructor of a course, monitor exams, grade papers or help prepare lectures. Research assistants collaborate with faculty on funded research projects, assisting with research, field work and preparation of proposals and grants. General assistants may perform other duties such as clinical or administrative tasks related to their educational and career objectives. Contact your department for information on how to apply for an assistantship.

FELLOWSHIPSFellowships are awarded to graduate students who demonstrate outstanding scholastic achievement. Saint Louis University offers three types: Diversity Fellowship, Presidential Fellowship and Dissertation Fellowship. These are awarded for a maximum of two years to a master’s student and for four years to a doctoral student, and they include tuition, monthly stipends and health insurance.

Each program may nominate one candidate for the Diversity Fellowship and one candidate for the Presidential Fellowship. Dissertation Fellowships are competitively awarded to doctoral candidates whose dissertations will significantly extend the body of knowledge within their disciplines. Students interested in being nominated for a fellowship should contact their department of interest.
