Welcome to Classics at uGA!

“The high-sounding song of Homer, the sweet notes of Virgil, the s rring narra ves of Xenophon and Caesar, the denuncia on, the suasion, and the arguments of Cicero, heard no more in the na ve land of the philosopher, were familiar sounds on the air of Athens.”

So William Meigs describes Athens, Georgia, in the early days of the University, during the presidency of his great-grandfather, Josiah Meigs. As this quota on suggests, there is a long tradi on of Classics at UGA, a tradi on that today is strong and vibrant.

The discipline of Classics was central to the rise of universi es in the Western culture tradi on, and stu-dents have taken La n and Greek at the University of Georgia since it opened its doors in 1801. Indeed, in the early years of UGA, ora ons at commencement were o en delivered in Greek or La n to refl ect the classical course of study at the University. Today, the Department of Classics at UGA off ers three kinds of classes: La n language and literature courses, in which students read and translate La n (these courses carry the LATN prefi x); Greek language and literature courses, in which students read and translate an-cient Greek (these courses carry the GREK prefi x); and Classical Culture courses, which cover classical literature, history, and material culture and are taught in English transla on (these courses carry the CLAS prefi x). We off er majors in La n (no thesis required) and in Classical Languages (emphases on Greek, La n, or Greek and La n) for graduate students.

This handbook is a tool that should answer most of the frequently asked ques ons about earning your degree. We hope that you fi nd it useful planning your me with the department.

General Informa on Facili esThe Department has its offi ces and classrooms in Park Hall, a few minute’s walk from the University’s Main Library. The Library itself houses three million volumes, with substan al holdings in Classics. The Department also house a state-of-the-art compu ng center for students, an extensive collec- on of slides and digital images, and the James W. Alexan-

der Reading Room containing approximately 3,200 Classics texts and general reference works. A library liaison visits the department when classes are in session to help with access-ing library resources.

Events and Publica onsThe Department sponsors a number of lectures in Classics every year, including an annual series of lecturers spon-sored by the Athens Society of the Archaeological Ins tute of America. The Summer Ins tute features pedagogical workshops and presenta ons by Master teachers.

Overseas ProgramsThe Department of Classics off ers students enrolled in the M.A. program the opportunity to study overseas with its Stud-ies Abroad Program in Rome, Italy. This is a full-credit summer program off ering on-site study of ancient Rome. The program consists of approximately six weeks in the heart of Rome, with a three-day fi eld trip to Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Paestum, and day trips to such places as Tarquinia, Cerveteri, Tivoli, and Os a. Instruc on combines periodic classroom ses-sions with daily fi eld trips to sites and museums. The program requires serious commitment to the academic course work, but me is allowed for individual explora on in Rome, and several weekends are le free so that students may travel in-dependently to other parts of Italy. The Department also encourages students to par cipate in archaeological excava ons (see Dr. Naomi Norman for de-tails) or the summer programs of the American Academy in Rome or the American School of Classical Studies in Athens (see the Graduate Coordinator or Ins tute Director).

Scholarships are available from CAMWS, the Department of Classics, and elsewhere to support graduate students who par cipate in foreign study programs.

all of their academic work.

Degree Informa onDescrip on of Degree ProgramsThe graduate program consists of two M.A. degrees, one in La n and one in Classical Languages. The M.A. in La n is specifi cally designed for current or pro-spec ve K-12 teachers and requires addi onal coursework, research, and a teaching project in lieu of a thesis.

The M.A. in Classical Languages is specifi cally designed for students who are interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in Classics or a related fi eld. It has three areas of emphasis (Greek and La n, Greek, or La n) and requires a thesis.

Selec on of Degree ProgramWhen entering the program, a student will elect, in consul-

ta on with the Graduate Coordinator or Summer Ins tute Director, to pursue either the M.A. in Classical Languages (the op on for most students, including all pre-doctoral stu-dents) or the M.A. in La n (available only to students pre-paring for careers in K-12 educa on).

Students who choose to pursue the M.A. in Classical Lan-guages will also elect an area of emphasis (Greek and La n, Greek, or La n).

Students will not normally be allowed to convert from the M.A. in Classical Languages to the M.A. in La n, but students who have not completed more than 18 hours of course credit that may be used on their Program of Study (excluding CLAS 8000 and LATN 7770) may pe on the Graduate Faculty for permission to convert to the non-thesis program. They must send an offi cial le er to the Graduate Faculty (via the Gradu-ate Coordinator or Summer Ins tute Director) reques ng to change their degree program and explaining their reasons.

*Please note that students will not be able to fulfi ll the requirements for the M.A. degrees in Classical Languages if they enroll only during summer terms.

General Requirements and Informa on Common to Both Degree Programs

PROFICIENCY EXAM: Each entering student is required to take the La n and/or Greek profi ciency exam/s, depending on their degree program.

PROSEMINAR: Each student will take the Classics Prosemi-nar (CLAS 8000) during their fi rst semester/summer of resi-dency. The purpose of the Classics Proseminar is twofold: 1) to introduce matricula ng graduate students to the wide range of resources, bibliography, and methodologies useful to their study of Classics and 2) to give new students some immediate exposure to members of the graduate faculty and to their areas of special exper se.

The Proseminar will include weekly sessions, beginning with some general sessions on tools of the trade (e.g., bibliograph-ic tools, electronic resources, professional wri ng, etc.). The other sessions will focus on a range of disciplines within the fi eld of Classics such as philology, literary theory and cri -cism, linguis cs, archaeology, epigraphy, numisma cs, papy-rology, etc. The faculty member responsible for each session will provide students with a bibliography and resource list appropriate to the topic under discussion and announce a reading or other assignment to prepare for the session.

CULTURE STUDIES: All students in the program must in-clude a graduate-level Classical Culture (CLAS) course in their offi cial program of study. A student entering the pro-

gram without evidence of any background in Greek and/or Roman culture may be required to audit CLAS 1000/1000H (Greek Culture) and/or 1010/1010H (Roman Culture) and pass the fi nal exam(s) in those courses before enrolling in a graduate-level CLAS course.

THE PROGRAM OF STUDY: At the beginning of the third summer of study for Ins tute students or the third semester of study for academic year students, the Ins tute Director or Graduate Coordinator will submit a Program of Study for each student to the Graduate School. The Ins tute Director or Graduate Coordinator will discuss the Program of Study with each student during general advising sessions to make sure that all requirements are understood and that the stu-dent is compiling an appropriate program of study. Course credits begin to expire a er six years, if the degree is not completed. Students must receive a grade of C or higher in graduate level courses (6000 and above) for them to count toward the program of study.

READING LIST: See page 22 for the reading list. This list, which is the basis for the Reading List Examina ons for either degree, includes general surveys of literature, culture, history, as well as selec ons from ancient authors in transla on.

READING LIST EXAMINATION: A primary goal of the Reading List Examina on is to give students the opportuni-ty to become familiar with the broad scope of La n and/or Greek literature and to examine and discuss the historical, mythical, and religious context of that literature. See page 24 for a sample of the exam. The ques ons are based on the READING LIST. As with all other Departmental examina- ons, students taking the exam must follow the University’s

Academic Honesty policy. Students are asked to sign an honor code sta ng “On my honor, I pledge that I have nei-ther given nor received help on this assignment. The essays that I will be submi ng are my own work and were wri en in their en rety during the offi cial exam period.

The Graduate Coordinator or Ins tute Director administers the M.A. Reading List Examina on. Ins tute students take this examina on no later than the beginning of their third summer in residence (normally the exam is given within the fi rst week of classes in June). Academic year students take this examina on in their second semester of residency (nor-mally the exam is given during March).

The exam is taken on computer and will be evaluated anon-ymously by the en re graduate faculty. Wri en no fi ca on of the results (High Pass, Pass, Fail) will be given to the ex-aminee within seven business days a er the administra on of the exam. In order to pass, students must perform sa s-factorily on both parts of the examina on. If a student fails the exam in whole or part, he/she may take it one more

me, at the end of the same summer for Ins tute students or during the summer term for academic year students. Failing the re-examina on will result in immediate dismissal from the M.A. program.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE: A modern foreign language (French, German, Italian, or Spanish) is recom-mended, but not required for the M.A. in La n non-thesis. A modern foreign language (French, German, or Italian) is required for the M.A. in Classical Languages. Candidates for the M.A. in Classical Languages must demonstrate reading profi ciency in French, German, or Italian, by earning a grade of “B” or be er in either a UGA third semester conversa- onal course or a special reading knowledge course in the

language, or by passing the Graduate Transla on Exams administered by those language Departments. Registra on deadlines for the transla on exams administered by the language departments at UGA are posted each semester on the Graduate Student bulle n board next to Room 224. Stu-dents who have taken similar courses at other ins tu ons may pe on to have those courses accepted to fulfi ll this requirement by submi ng a course descrip on and sylla-bus to the Graduate Coordinator or Ins tute Director, as long as the course work is no more than six years old. For academic year students, this requirement must be sa sfi ed by the end of the third semester of study, exclusive of the summer term.

TRANSFER CREDIT: Any M.A. student who has received credit for relevant graduate courses elsewhere prior to matricula on at UGA may pe on the Graduate Faculty to have that course work accepted as part of his/her offi -cial Program of Study. As part of the pe on, the student must submit course descrip ons, syllabi, a paper, Transfer Request Form, and an offi cial transcript to the Graduate Co-ordinator or Ins tute Director. No more than 6 hours may be transferred.

The Graduate Faculty will evaluate the pe on and the stu-dent’s progress in this Department and will render a deci-sion about accep ng this course work within two terms. Currently enrolled students who wish to enroll in graduate courses at another university and apply them to the UGA Program of Study may pe on the Graduate Faculty for pre-approval of the proposed courses; the student must submit course descrip ons and syllabi to the Graduate Coordinator or Ins tute Director for considera on by the Graduate Fac-ulty. If a course is given preliminary approval, the student must provide the Graduate Coordinator or Ins tute Director a copy of the actual fi nal syllabus and an offi cial transcript for the class, a er comple ng the course, for fi nal approval. The transferability of work done in organized overseas pro-grams will be evaluated on an ad hoc basis. No more than

6 hours of course credit may be transferred and only for courses in which the student has earned a grade of at least “B.” Students who begin as non-degree students within the Department and then become degree students may, with permission of the Graduate Coordinator or Ins tute Direc-tor, transfer 9 hours of graduate course credit from their non-degree program to their degree program.

STYLE AND ABBREVIATIONS FOR RESEARCH PAPERS AND THESIS: For abbrevia ons of journals, consult the lat-est issues of L’Annee philologique and the American Journal of Archaeology (January 2007); for abbrevia ons of ancient authors and their works consult the Oxford Classical Dic- onary and the Liddell-Sco -Jones Greek-English Lexicon.

Students must also follow the Graduate School Style Man-ual (available online at h p://www.uga.edu/gradschool/academics/thesis.html). For addi onal informa on about theses, including deadlines, consult the Graduate School website at www.grad.uga.edu.

TERMINATING A GRADUATE STUDENT FOR CAUSE: It is the policy of the Graduate Faculty of the Department to review the performance of each graduate student every term in which he/she is enrolled. Should a student receive a nega ve review in any term, he/she will receive a wri en report and a warning from the Graduate Coordinator or In-s tute Director. A nega ve review in the student’s next term of enrollment will result in immediate termina on from the program. A posi ve review at any point in the procedure will return the student to good standing.

Procedures and Requirements for the M.A. La n

PROFICIENCY EXAM: All entering students are required to take the La n profi ciency exam.

The exam (3 hours) will be scheduled by the Ins tute Di-rector or Graduate Coordinator and will contain two pas-sages, one prose, one poetry to be translated. Dic onaries are available and students are permi ed to consult them.

COURSE WORK: Each student must sa sfactorily com-plete at least 36 hours of course work at the graduate level, plus one hour of CLAS 8000 (Proseminar), plus a minimum of one hour of LATN 6770/7770 for a total of 38 hours. At least 18 hours must be in graduate courses (6000 level or above) in La n, including two surveys of La n literature if off ered. At least three hours must be in Classical Culture. The remaining hours may be taken in the languages, Clas-sical Culture, or related fi elds. At least 12 of the 36 hours must be in courses a ended exclusively by graduate stu-

dents (either 8000-level seminars or 6000-level courses that have no 4000-level component). (See chart on page 10). All students must confer with the Graduate Coordinator or In-s tute Director before registering for any courses.

FINAL ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENT: By the end of their third summer, for summers-only students, or the end of the second semester, for academic-year students, M.A. La n non-thesis degree candidates must have a fi nal as-sessment for comple on by the end of the course of study. The defense will occur only a er all coursework has been completed, or in the summer in which coursework will be completed.

TEACHING PROJECT & ORAL DISCUSSION AND DE-FENSE:

A project designed for use in a K-12 La n classroom, based directly upon and incorpora ng research, reading, or other coursework completed for one or more of the graduate courses in the program of study, supervised by a faculty di-rector, in consulta on with at least one other faculty mem-ber (and preferably two).

• Projects must be based directly upon and incorporate papers/assignments in the research por olio or other work done for graduate courses in the program of study; projects will include a fi nal product, such as (a) classroom-ready materials, lesson plan, and teacher’s guide for a curriculum unit, (b) text and visuals in ap-propriate media for a classroom unit, or (c) other ma-terials for classroom ac vi es.

• The project director must be a member of the gradu-ate faculty.

• The project commi ee will consist of at least two (preferably three) faculty members, including the faculty member supervising the project; one of the commi ee members should have taught a course on which the project is based. The commi ee will be convened by the project director at least twice: (1) ini- ally to discuss and agree upon the student’s project

proposal, and (2) for the student’s discussion and de-fense of the fi nal product.

• The discussion and defense of the project will be open to all members of the Department and will be conducted by the commi ee, with at least two com-mi ee members in a endance, who will then vote on whether the project and its defense merits a pass or a fail. If there are only two commi ee members, or only two can a end the defense, the Summer Ins tute Di-rector, or her/his designate, will also review the proj-ect, a end the defense, and vote.

Procedures and Requirements for the M.A. Classical Languages

PROFICIENCY EXAM: All entering graduate students are required to take the La n and/or Greek Profi ciency Exams, depending on their area of emphasis.

The exam (3 hours) will be scheduled by the Graduate Coor-dinator or Ins tute Director and will contain two passages, one prose, one poetry to be translated. Dic onaries are available and students are permi ed to consult them.

COURSE WORK: All students must be advised by the Gradu-ate Coordinator or Ins tute Director each term before regis-tering for any courses. Each student must sa sfactorily com-plete at least 27 hours of course work at the graduate level, plus at least three hours of CLAS/GREK/LATN 7300 (thesis) and one hour of CLAS 8000 (Proseminar), for a total of 31 hours. This is the minimum requirement, not the op mum. Students are strongly encouraged to take as many courses as possible, especially if they intend to apply to a Ph.D. pro-gram in Classics.

For the M.A. with an emphasis in Greek, at least 12 hours must be in graduate courses (numbered 6000 or above) in Greek; the remaining hours may be in the languages, Classi-cal Culture, or related fi elds.

For the M.A. with an emphasis in La n, at least 12 hours must be in graduate courses (numbered 6000 or above) in La n; the remaining hours may be in the languages, Classi-cal Culture, or related fi elds.

For the M.A. with an emphasis in both Greek and La n, at least 9 hours must be in graduate courses (numbered 6000 or above) in Greek and at least 9 hours in graduate courses in La n; the remaining hours may be in the languages, Clas-sical Culture, or related fi elds.

For all three emphases, at least 12 of the 27 hours must be in courses a ended exclusively by graduate students (gener-ally 8000-level seminars, the La n or Greek survey courses, or 6000-level courses that have no 4000-level component). See charts on pages 15-17 for specifi c details.

MASTER’S ADVISORY COMMITTEE: During the third se-mester of study, before the Program of Study is fi led with the Graduate School, each academic year student must choose, in consulta on with the Graduate Coordinator, his/her Master’s Advisory Commi ee, to consist of the Major Professor and two other faculty who will serve as Readers of the thesis. The Major Professor and at least one of the two Readers must be members of the Classics Department and of the Graduate Faculty. According to University regula-

ons, Franklin Teaching Fellows may not serve on Master’s Advisory Commi ees.

Ins tute students who are pursuing the M.A. in Classical Languages will select a Master’s Advisory Commi ee by end of the third week of the third summer of study.

The Assistant to the Graduate Coordinator or Ins tute Di-rector will fi le the Master’s Advisory Commi ee form with the Graduate School.

THESIS PROSPECTUS: Each student who has passed the Reading List Exam must submit to the Graduate Coordinator a copy of his/her thesis prospectus and the departmental Advisory Commi ee and Thesis Prospectus Approval Form (see page 20 for a copy of this form); the form is also avail-able on the Departmental website under ‘For Students.’

This form indicates that the student has selected a Major Professor and Thesis Advisory Commi ee which has ap-proved his/her thesis prospectus and program of study. Ac-ademic year students must fi le this by October 15th of their second year of study; Ins tute students must fi le this before the beginning of the fourth summer in residence. Financial assistance will be immediately discon nued if the student misses this deadline.

The Major Professor will help the student select a suitable thesis topic. The prospectus for the thesis will include an outline of the thesis topic, a descrip on of the methodology to be employed, a jus fi ca on for the topic, a brief sum-mary of chapter topics, and bibliography. Within two weeks of the submission of the prospectus, the Major Professor will convene the Advisory Commi ee to discuss the thesis topic, cri que and refi ne the bibliography, and offi cially ap-prove the prospectus.

The thesis prospectus should serve as a blueprint for the M.A. thesis. It should be limited in scope (3-5 pp) and should answer the following ques ons:

1. What is the ques on the thesis intends to answer?2. What preliminary research and reading has led to this

ques on?3. What methodologies will be used in answering it?4. How will the thesis be organized into chapters?

THESIS: Individual chapters of the thesis will be submi ed directly to the Major Professor who will decide when a chap-ter should be given to the Readers for their comments. Facul-ty agree to read and comment on dra s as quickly as possible

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION OF THESIS: M.A. students are re-quired to fi le a copy of their thesis with the Graduate School

FINAL ORAL EXAM: A fi nal oral examina on on the thesis is required. The Advisory Commi ee, in consulta on with the student, will decide when to schedule this exam. The Final Oral Exam is open to all faculty and graduate students in the Department and will be publicly announced.

PROSPECTIVE DOCTORAL STUDENTS: Those students who an cipate con nuing their educa on at the Ph.D. level should meet with the Graduate Coordinator or Ins tute Director as soon as possible to discuss their program of study. In par cu-lar, students planning to pursue the doctorate in either Clas-sics or Ancient History should be profi cient in both Greek and La n. Those interested in the Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology, Compara ve Literature, or other fi elds, may be expected to fulfi ll somewhat diff erent prerequisites and should consult the Graduate Coordinator or Ins tute Director, as well as in-dividual faculty members in their areas of advice.

In any case, M.A. students in the Department should take as many upper division and/or graduate-level Greek and La n courses as their schedules permit. More course work will, in general, maximize the chances of acceptance into the doc-toral program of their choice.

DOCTORAL PROGRAMS: Many students who earn their M.A. in Classical Languages at UGA con nue their studies at a doctoral program. In the last fi ve years, our graduates have been accepted at a wide range of fi rst- er programs, including Brown University, Candler School of Theology at Emory University, New York University, Princeton Univer-sity, Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan, and Uni-versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to pursue doctoral degrees in Classics, Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Compara ve Literature, and Theology.

1. Trace the development of Roman elegy from Catullus to Ovid. Discuss the dominant mo fs, the social and poli cal status of its authors, and its rela onship to other genres of poetry in the late Republic and early Empire.

2. Hesiod’s encounter with the Muses on Mt. Helicon is paradigma c for Greek literature’s anxiety about authen ca ng the voice of the wise man/poet by anchoring it to a divine source. Discuss this prob-lem as it appears in at least three authors, one of which should be Thucydides or Plato.

3. Discuss the wri ng of lives in an quity. What are the generic parameters of biography or autobiogra-phy? What cons tutes a proper life? A good discussion will use both Roman and Greek examples and be judicious about the generic origins and underpinnings of the text.

2. In the Funeral Ora on Thucydides has Pericles refl ect on the relentless spirit of innova on that char-acterized the Athenians and helped to dis nguish them from the Spartans. At the same me, Athens preserved a deep strain of cultural conserva sm. Students are responsible for purchasing their own supplies and equipment, but the following equipment and services are available on a limited basis to the graduate students en-rolled in the Department.

2. Use of the photocopier in Room 229 is prohibited without special permission of the Department. Graduate students should use the copier in Room 223 instead.

3. Graduate students may have keys to the following:• the Alexander Room, Compu ng Center, Teacher

Resource Center, and the Classics Commons in Room 223;

• the outside door to Park Hall.There is a $5 (per key) deposit for the keys which will be re-funded when they are returned to the Departmental offi ce. All keys will be distributed by Ms. Holcombe (Room 220).

Timothy Nolan Gantz Classics Compu ng Center

The Timothy Nolan Gantz Classics Compu ng Center in Room 232 is open during normal hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.). Graduate students may also use the Center a er hours; contact Rebecca Holcombe for a key ($5 deposit) and access code. Graduate students who use the room a er hours should turn off the lights and lock the room when they leave.

Computers: The Center is equipped with several worksta- ons, including one Mac sta on and one handicapped-ac-

cessible sta on. All of the worksta ons are networked. To logon, you use your MyID (everything in front of @ in your UGA e-dress). The worksta ons are set up so that if you are idle for more than three minutes, the system will automa -cally log you out. Make sure you log out when you leave the worksta on. Before using any of the computers, be certain that your fl ash drives etc. are free of any computer viruses. All of the computers in the Center have been programmed to erase all unauthorized programs and fi les, and to re-boot

every day at 2 a.m. Therefore, do not write anything to the hard drives of the computers in the Center. Do NOT, un-der any circumstances, download any programs or change any of the automa c se ngs on these computers. If you encounter any problems with the computers in the Center, contact: [email protected].

Prin ng: The computers are networked to a laser printer. You may send a job to the printer from any worksta on, but you must supply your own paper. If the job is not prin ng, check to make sure that your worksta on has the printer in the Center set as the default printer (go to Se ngs under the Start menu). If that doesn’t solve the problem, contact [email protected].

Scanning: The computers are networked to the scanner that sits above the printer in the Center. Instruc ons for us-ing the scanner are posted near the scanner.

Word Processing: The computers are equipped with Microso Word and a Greek keyboard. To access the Greek font and the keyboard which will give you access to all characters and dia-cri cs, select the EN tab located at the bo om right of your monitor. When the menu pops up, choose EL. Cita ons: UGA has a site license for Endnote and Ref-Works which are preloaded on the computers in the Center. Con-tact a UGA librarian with ques ons about Endnote or Ref-Works.

Rules for use of the Timothy Nolan Gantz Classics Compu ng Center

The Gantz Classics Department Compu ng Center is pro-vided as a service to Classics students, faculty and staff . Use of the Center is welcome and encouraged; however, the De-partment requests all users to follow these guidelines.

• Do not save any fi les to any Center computer hard drive. All personal user fi les must be saved to CD-Rs or fl ash drives to be provided by the user. Any unau-thorized fi les found on any Center computers will be

automa cally erased each morning.• Do not delete any fi les or programs from Center com-

puters.• Virus so ware is installed and running on all Center

machines. Do not disable this so ware. When you are using a computer, if you are prompted to update the so ware, do so.

• In the event that the so ware detects a virus while you are using a Center machine, no fy the classics helpdesk immediately at [email protected].

• Do not install or download any program on Center computers; this includes Instant Messengers.

• Do not copy any so ware from the Center onto a per-sonal computer. This is a viola on of copyright.

• Do not remove any of the inventory control numbers, s ckers etc. from any of the computers or printers in the Center.

• Supply your own paper when prin ng.• If you experience any problems with a computer, pro-

Opportuni es for employment in higher educa on and school administra on are limited. Compe on for posi-

ons is high, and most require a Ph.D. in Classics. Consult the Graduate Coordinator and other faculty for informa on about the unique procedures followed in adver sing these jobs, applying for them, and in hiring procedures. Most col-leges and universi es, and many school systems, will adver- se their vacancies na onally in publica ons targeted for

academics or school administrators, such as The Chronicle of Higher Educa on. Useful informa on is also available on the APA website.

PUBLICATIONS AND PRESENTATIONS: Students interested in publishing an ar cle in Classics will fi nd helpful advice in William H. Race’s ar cle, “The Process of Developing a Pub-lishable Paper in Classics: An Illustra ve Example and Some Sugges ons,” The Classical Journal 100.3 (2005): 301-305. Students should consider delivering papers at regional or na onal conferences in Classics, such as the CAMWS Annual Mee ng (informa on is available at the CAMWS website, www.camws.org). No ces for other mee ngs are rou nely posted on the bulle n boards around the Department; the faculty are happy to advise students on the process. The Graduate Coordinator will also set up a mock paper session for students who would like to get feedback on a presenta- on they are scheduled to give.

GENERAL INFORMATION: The M.A. in La n or Classical Lan-guages from UGA does not include teacher cer fi ca on. For College of Educa on programs that do include cer fi ca on, visit h p://www.coe.uga.edu/lle/.

Please note that most schools, especially public schools, will give priority to applicants who are fully cer fi ed. Cer fi ca on requirements vary considerably from state to state, and those in Georgia have been revised recently. Our graduate students who have completed the Masters degree and sought to teach in K-12, have fared well on the job market, especially in private schools. Many of these students took educa on courses or had some experience in the schools (see Dr. LaFleur to arrange this) or had worked with youngsters in community service.

EDUCATION/METHODS COURSES: To prepare for teaching jobs at the K-12 level, students may want to take one or more professional educa on courses, including UGA classes in Founda ons of Educa on, Educa-

Please note that these couses cannot be applied to the Program of Study for any of the Masters degrees in the Classics Department.

GEORGIA CLASSICAL ASSOCIATION PLACEMENT SERVICE: The Georgia Classical Associa on’s Placement Service lists K-12 La n teaching posi ons in Georgia, as well as the adja-cent states of Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Caro-lina, and Tennessee.
