PERSONAL STATEMENT

I am an Architecture Graduate from Cardiff University, seeking a creative role in a proactive design-oriented environment. Since graduating from the WSA programme, ranked top school of architecture in the UK, I have worked with a local contractor, gaining hands-on experience evolving designs, working with materials and interacting with clients. I have always had a natural affinity for the practical and hands-on, something that was passed down to me from previous generations of artists, designers and engineers. Most of my spare time has always been spent with a hammer in hand, or working on some project around the home, and the experience has reconnected me with my love of realising ideas. I am very interested in the lifestyle aspect of design. Whether designing a home, a landscape, a piece of furniture or even creating a recipe, by taking a grassroots approach, going back to the basics, understanding the fundamentals and the raw materials, you can extract the elements that are really important. These are the things that make design really work for people, that make us feel good. This is the definition of good design. How well technology is integrated into a piece of design can also be make or break. I have become very knowledgeable in the technical aspects of design, from historic practices to the breakthroughs (and pitfalls) of the mid-century. I am also proficient in many areas of mechanical and environmental services, sustainability, electrical and lighting design, automation, HVAC, and construction detailing, and fully aware of the design implications they impose. Outside of work, I grew up and built a home in rural Kent, UK. I have spent a lot of time outdoors and around down-to-earth individuals, who have given me an appreciation for the good things in life. I have travelled extensively within the US and South America, and to a lesser extent, Scandinavia. Having spent much time with family on the East Coast, US influences and culture have become second nature to me, opening my eyes to so many more places, practices and walks of life than I would ever have experienced before, and helped transport me to where I am now.
