Statement of Purpose

The mission of William Carey University is to provide quality liberalarts and professional education programs within a caring Christian aca-demic community. The individual student is encouraged to develop hisor her highest potential in scholarship, leadership, and service. The uni-versity collaborates with churches, organizations, and individuals toaffirm its Baptist heritage and namesake—William Carey.

William Carey College was chartered to become William Carey

University in June 2006. All references to the institution in this catalog

will be William Carey University, except in historical contexts.

William Carey University HistoryWilliam Carey University claims two proud predecessors as it looks

forward to a future of continued growth and development. The first ofthese was founded in 1906 as a private, coeducational institution knownas South Mississippi College. With the legendary South Mississippi edu-cator W. I. Thames as its president, the college quickly gained a reputa-tion for a strong faculty, especially in art, music, history, and home eco-nomics. After a fire destroyed the immense administration building,including classrooms, library, and a 1500-seat auditorium, the younginstitution was forced to close.

In 1911, W. S. F. Tatum, wealthy lumberman and Methodist layman,acquired the property and offered it as a gift to the Baptists. He set twoconditions: successful operation of a Christian school for girls for fiveyears and an enrollment of at least one hundred students the first year.The property consisted of two surviving frame buildings and ten acres ofcut-over land. A corporation was organized to own and control the col-lege with nine trustees chosen from Baptist churches in Hattiesburg. InSeptember, 1911, the school opened again with a new name, MississippiWoman’s College, under the leadership of President W. W. Rivers. InNovember, 1911, the debt-free college was offered to the MississippiBaptist Convention and was accepted.

The growth of Mississippi Woman’s College was a source of pride forMississippi Baptists. Under the leadership of President J. L. Johnson, Jr.,from 1912 to 1932, a splendid new administration building was complet-ed in 1914 and named Tatum Court in honor of the college’s major bene-factor. New brick dormitories were added (Ross and Johnson Halls) aswell as an infirmary and a model home, which was used as a laboratoryfor domestic science classes. During this period, the campus expanded to40 acres.

The college did not measure its progress simply with physical achieve-ments. An early objective of Mississippi Woman’s College was to trainintelligent, concerned citizens who could establish Christian homes.Curricula and activities were designed with this primary objective inmind. By 1925 college stationery boldly proclaimed on its letterhead,“Mississippi Woman’s College: The School with a Mission.” The studentbody dedicated itself to the mission of the college. Such dedicationaccounts for Mississippi Woman’s College becoming known by the late1920s as one of the South’s outstanding Christian colleges for women.Continued growth and an emphasis on missions characterized the presi-dency of W. E. Holcomb from 1932 to 1940.

When the exigencies of the depression era forced the college to close in1940, its facilities became available for use as army officers’ housing fornearby Camp Shelby. In 1946 Mississippi Woman’s College re-openedand underwent major renovations. Dr. I. E. Rouse was elected presidentin 1946 and served until 1956. In 1953 the Mississippi Baptist Conventionvoted to move the college into coeducational status after more than fourdecades of admitting only female students. This vote necessitated a newname for the institution. In 1954 the board of trustees selected the nameof William Carey College in honor of the eighteenth century English cob-bler-linguist whose decades of missionary activity in India earned himinternational recognition as the “Father of Modern Missions.”

Under the leadership of Dr. J. Ralph Noonkester, who was electedpresident of the college in 1956, William Carey College enjoyed signifi-cant growth. In 14 years, a total of 14 new buildings rose on theHattiesburg campus. The college attracted national attention with base-ball, basketball, and tennis teams, the traveling chorale, the theatre per-formance groups, scientific honor societies, student mission efforts (oneof the nation’s leading colleges in number of mission volunteers), andpre-medical activities (frequently a leader in percentage of acceptances tomedical school). Dr. Noonkester served as president from 1956 to 1989.

In 1968 William Carey entered a new dimension when it announced amerger with the prestigious Mather School of Nursing in New Orleans.Still another dimension opened for William Carey in 1976 when the col-lege purchased the Gulf Coast Military Academy campus in Gulfport.Known as William Carey College on the Coast, the 20-acre Gulfport cam-pus offers selected undergraduate and graduate degrees.

In November of 1989, the board of trustees elected Dr. James W.Edwards the seventh president of William Carey College. Dr. Edwardsserved until 1997.

Dr. Larry Kennedy was appointed interim president in 1997 and,following a nationwide search, was appointed president in 1998. Since1998 the physical facilities on the Hattiesburg and Gulfport campuseshave undergone major repair and renovation. The New Orleans nursingprogram was relocated to the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminarycampus in 1998. The Fail/Asbury School of Nursing Building wascompleted in January 2002, the first new building on the Hattiesburgcampus in 25 years. Two soccer fields and an intramural field werededicated in 2004. The Lorena Roseberry Smith Hall, housing educationdepartment programs, was completed in 2004 also. Donnell Hall wascompleted in 2006 and houses the Center for the Study of the Life and

Work of William Carey. The Milton Wheeler field and baseball complexwas built and put into use in 2006, and a softball field as well. On theNew Orleans campus, a new nursing building affords new learningopportunities. Enrollment figures reached the highest levels in theinstitution’s history. In 2006 the board of trustees voted to change thename to William Carey University to honor its growth and enhance itspotential in an increasingly global environment.

William Carey University is organized into the following academicunits: the School of Arts, Humanities, and Sciences; the School ofBusiness; the School of Education; the School of Psychology andCounseling; the Owen and Elizabeth Cooper School of Missions andBiblical Studies; the Donald and Frances Winters School of Music; and theJoseph and Nancy Fail School of Nursing.

The dramatic developments over the years demonstrate that WilliamCarey University has accepted William Carey’s challenging motto:

“Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.”

GovernanceWilliam Carey University is a nonprofit corporation operating as an

institution of higher learning from its domicile in Hattiesburg,Mississippi. The university operates under the governance of a board oftrustees elected by the Mississippi Baptist Convention.

LocationsWilliam Carey University has three major campuses:

HATTIESBURG is the home of the main campus, founded in 1906. On120 acres, the university is conveniently located on the south side of thecity. Hattiesburg is known as the "Hub City" because it is located at theintersections of Interstate 59 and U.S. Highways 49, 98 and 11. The city iscentrally located less than 100 miles from the state capital of Jackson, aswell as the Gulf Coast, New Orleans and Mobile. With a population of50,000, Hattiesburg is the educational, retail and medical center for thesoutheast Mississippi region.

GULFPORT is the location of William Carey University on the Coast.The Gulfport campus is currently operating out of temporary facilities atthe beachfront location on Highway 90. Plans are underway for a newcampus to be constructed in the Gulfport area.

NEW ORLEANS is one of the sites of the School of Nursing. The school ishoused on the campus of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.“America’s most unusual city,” historic New Orleans offers the student a richmosaic of culture and tradition. The nursing program is also offered on theother two Carey campuses.

AccreditationWilliam Carey University is accredited by the Commission on

Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, 1866Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; (telephone number 404-679-4500), to award bachelor, master, and specialist degrees.

The Winters School of Music is an accredited institutional member ofthe National Association of Schools of Music. The music therapy programis accredited by the American Music Therapy Association. The School ofNursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing AccreditingCommission, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006, (800-669-1656 ext. 153);by the board of trustees, Institutions of Higher Learning of the State ofMississippi, and approved in New Orleans by the Louisiana State Boardof Nursing. Programs in education are approved by the MississippiDepartment of Education using NCATE standards.

The right to grant masters degrees was approved for William CareyCollege on December 12, 1972, when the Southern Association extendedLevel III status to the institution, and the Specialist in Education degreeprogram was subsequently approved in 1978.

The university holds membership in the following professionalorganizations: American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education,Mississippi Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, PrivateColleges of Education in Mississippi, American Association of Colleges ofNursing, Southern Council of Collegiate Schools of Nursing, and theNational League for Nursing.

Institutional EffectivenessIn an effort to engage in an ongoing quest for quality, the university

maintains a comprehensive system of planning and evaluation in allmajor aspects of the institution. The Statement of Purpose for theuniversity is used as the foundation for this evaluation. A variety ofassessment methods are used, and the results are implemented toimprove both the education programs and support activities.Educational quality is determined by how effectively the institutionachieves its established goals. The results of the university’s assessmentprocedures are incorporated annually into the university’s planning

process in order to achieve continual improvement in programs andservices.

Policy on Privacy of Student RecordsUnder the “Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974” as

amended, William Carey University students have the right to inspectand review any and all records, files, and data directly related to them.The university will not ordinarily release students’ records to any outsideagency without the written consent of the student. Consent forms areavailable in the registrar’s office.

William Carey University will release “directory information” onstudents to any interested member of the public unless the studentrequests in writing that it be withheld.

William Carey Library SystemThe goal of the William Carey University Library System is to

support the curriculum and research needs of students and facultythrough the provision of comprehensive resources, services, andfacilities. Library resources are available to anyone; however, borrowingprivileges are restricted to Carey students, faculty, staff, and residentMississippi ministers. These constituents may borrow books from any ofthe library system libraries, and interlibrary loan services are maintainedto expedite sharing of resources between the Dumas L. Smith/I. E. RouseLibrary and regional libraries.

Professional librarians are available at each campus library locationto provide information services and instruction in the use of the library.

A cooperative agreement provides expeditious loan services forWilliam Carey University students between the libraries at Hattiesburg

and Gulfport and the libraries of the University of Southern Mississippi.Information may be obtained at the William Carey University libraries.

The Dumas L. Smith/I. E. Rouse Library

The Smith/Rouse Library, on the Hattiesburg campus, holdsapproximately 110,000 resources including books, periodicals, musicscores, microforms, and other library materials that support the academicprogram. An online catalog includes all cataloged resources. The libraryhas a computer lab with Internet access, microform readers, photocopyservices, audio-visual resources, and a video room. Indexes to periodicalliterature are available through electronic and print formats. An extensivearray of electronic databases provide access to thousands of onlinejournal articles.

The Smith/Rouse Library also holds the Clarence DickinsonCollection, which is a special church music collection. It contains 5,600items which include books, scores, manuscripts, microforms, phonodiscs,tapes, paintings, and memorabilia.

The McMullan Learning Resources Center

The McMullan Learning Resources Center on the Gulfport campushouses over 12,500 books, serials, and audiovisual resources. Librarycomputers provide access to the Internet, as well as providing anextensive array of online research databases with thousands of journalarticles. Quiet study areas, as well as photocopying services, are availablefor students and faculty.

Vehicle RegistrationRegistration of motor vehicles is a part of the academic registration

procedure at the beginning of each year for all students who arepermitted to bring cars on the campus. Students who bring unregisteredvehicles on campus after any registration period must register themimmediately after arrival on the campus. All university employees andstudents shall register their vehicles and secure a registration decal fromthe student development office. Failure to register a vehicle, to use theproper decal, or to observe all traffic regulations will constitute aviolation and subject the violator to certain penalties.

Campus Safety and SecurityCampus security personnel are located at four stations on the

Hattiesburg campus and are available 24 hours a day. Security personnelat Gulfport are located at the campus security station. Any crime orsuspicious activity should be reported promptly to campus security:Hattiesburg (601) 318-6300; Gulfport (228) 897-7223.

Student Rights and ResponsibilitiesEvery student is expected to display proper conduct. The university

Full-Time Course Load LimitationsThe minimum course load for status as a full-time graduate student

is six semester hours during a trimester.

A course load for graduate students of up to ten hours per trimesteris permitted. By special permission of the advisor and academic vicepresident, twelve hours per trimester may be taken. No more than twelvehours may be taken.

Independent study and/or directed readings courses are allowed,but only in situations where a required course is not available or inunusual circumstances that prevent a student from taking a course in thenormal manner. Online Enhanced CoursesThe increased availability and use of Internet technology is spurring

growth in the use of these tools for on-line teaching and learning.Creating a flexible learning system incorporating these technologies canmaximize student understanding and retention of new information.Curricular development of William Carey University courses within theBlackboard interface may incorporate multiple Internet tools, learnersupport, and encourage students to use those tools that best meet theirindividual learning styles and needs. Integrating technology withincoursework further prepares learners to leave Carey ready to enter theirprofessions with a high level of technological literacy. The university hasdeveloped several on-line enhanced courses. With the onset of globallearning, any course is subject to online enhancement.

GradesThe university uses the following grading system:

A is reserved for work which is definitely superior in quality.

B is given for work which is consistently good and would be considered above average.

C is given for minimal work and shows that basic requirements inclass assignments have been met, but is not considered standardwork for graduate students.

F is given when the student has failed the course.

I A grade of “I” (incomplete), will be assigned only whenunavoidable circumstances prevent completion of the work of thecourse on schedule and must be approved by the instructor andthe academic dean. In order to be elibible for a grade of “I”, astudent must be doing passing work, must have completed 80% ofthe required work for the class, and must provide appropriatedocumentation for requesting the incomplete. Requests are madeusing the Incomplete Grade Request Form obtained from theregistrar’s office. When the work is completed satisfactorily, the “I”may be changed to any grade assigned by the instructor. If a gradeof “I” is not changed to a passing grade by the end of the nexttrimester, it will automatically be changed to an “F.”

Degree Completion and Final AssessmentA student must complete all required work within a period of six

years after enrolling in graduate programs. All master’s degree programsat William Carey University require a candidate’s final assessment priorto graduation. This assessment may take the form of a written compre-hensive exam, a portfolio, a capstone course, and/or oral examination.

Students who are candidates for May degrees on the Hattiesburg andGulfport campuses are required to file applications for their degrees inthe registrar’s office by October 15 prior to graduation. Candidates forAugust graduation must file application for their degrees by March 31.Late applications may be taken within 30 working days of these dead-lines. There will be a $50 late fee in addition to the graduation fee.

Academic StandingA 3.0 GPA on all graduate courses taken at William Carey is required

for graduation. A student whose GPA drops below a 3.0 is placed onacademic probation. Students are allowed to improve their GPA byretaking courses at William Carey; however, only one grade replacementis allowed. Grades from other retakes will be averaged in with gradesfrom other courses. Students on probation may not improve their GPA bytaking courses at other institutions. A student on academic probationmust raise his/her GPA to a 3.0 by the end of the next trimester ofenrollment or the student will be dismissed and cannot continue in theprogram.

Only two grades lower than a B are allowed. Upon receiving asecond grade lower than a B, a student is advised to repeat one of the firsttwo grades lower than a B before continuing in the program. A studentmaking a third grade lower than a B will be dismissed from theprogram.

All appeals to policy relative to academic standing are made throughthe appropriate dean.

Academic AdvisingAll new students are assigned an academic advisor in their major

area of interest. The academic advisor will assist the student in designinga program of study that leads to the desired degree; however, theultimate responsibility in the selection of courses that satisfy degreerequirements rests with the student.

Terms of PaymentAll fees are due and payable upon registration prior to the

beginning of each trimester. Returning students who pre-registeredmust make payment arrangements with the business office by the end ofthe day on Friday before the start of each term in order to avoid a $50.00late payment fee, unless otherwise stated. Returning students who fail toregister for the next trimester during the pre-registration period will beassessed a late registration fee of $50.00. New students who register ongeneral registration day must make payment arrangements at the time ofregistration in order to avoid a $50.00 late payment fee. Studentsregistering after the pre-registration period will not receive a bill bymail, but must come to the business office for a schedule of classes andcharges.

The university offers a deferred payment plan for students who electnot to pay in full at the time of registration. There is a $35 fee assessedeach trimester for the privilege of using the deferred payment plan. Inorder to register under this plan, a student must pay all remainingbalances from previous trimesters and a minimum of one-half the tuition,fees, room, and board charges after deducting any student loans, grants,and scholarship amounts. The remaining trimester balance can bedivided into two equal payments with payments due at the timesspecified on the Deferred Payment Agreement. Students who fail to setup on the deferred payment plan by the end of the first week of class willbe automatically charged the $35 deferred payment fee plus an additional$15 processing fee. Failure to make payments by the due dates on theagreement will result in a $15 late payment charge on each of the duedates.

If a student is more than 15 days late in making payment, theuniversity reserves the right to terminate the student's enrollment.Should a student be granted permission to re-enter, a reinstatement fee of$10 will be assessed. This fee is nonrefundable and must be paid in cash.

A budget payment plan, offered by Educational Data Systems, Inc.(EDSI), is also available to students who would prefer to use an outsideagency. The business office has information about this plan. Theapplication form may also be downloaded from the websitewww.wmcarey.edu.

Account statements are mailed out monthly on all accounts with anoutstanding balance. Students are responsible for notifying the businessoffice of any address changes in order for statements to be received in atimely manner. Any changes or questions can be sent to [email protected] or mailed to the business office at

Nonreceipt of statements will not be considered a valid excuse fornonpayment. It is the responsibility of the individual (the student) whohas incurred the debt to see that it is paid promptly.

An account becomes delinquent after the second deferred paymentdue date has passed. If satisfactory payment arrangements cannot bemade, the business office will send a registered letter to the last knownaddress with a final request for payment. If no response is received with-in ten days, the account will be sent to a collection agency. The collectionagency will bill for the balance owed to WCU, plus up to an additional50% for their fee. The student will be responsible for paying the collectioncosts as stated on the Registration Form in the section"Acknowledgement of Financial Responsibility."

When an account is not paid in full by the deferred payment due date,the business office will place a "HOLD" on a student's record. This"HOLD" restricts the student's ability to receive transcripts, diploma, andto register for future academic terms. Once established, the "HOLD" willremain in place until the debt is paid in full.

Withdrawal and Drop/Add Refund PolicyA portion of tuition and fees may be refunded to students who

officially withdraw from the university or officially drop a course. Anyclaim for such refund will be based on the date on which the student filesa completed request with the Registrar's Office for official withdrawal ordropping of a course. No refund is made when a student is dismissed forreasons of misconduct. The general tuition refund policy is applied asfollows:

Office. The graduate summer tuition refund schedule is available in thegraduate dean’s office and in the Business Office.

Student Credit Balance Refund PolicyRefunds are issued on Fridays for students with credit balances, begin-

ning with Wednesday of the fourth week of the term and continuingevery Friday until the end of the term. Financial aid, payments, or adjust-ments must be received in the Hattiesburg business office by the cut-offdate to be considered for refunds the following week. Refunds foramounts under $25.00 will be issued only on request.

Student refunds for credit balances will be disbursed each trimesteraccording to the dates listed in the student refunds link on the WCU web-site and in the business office information packet. Refunds take at leastone week to process; therefore, after the first refund date, checks will bedisbursed every Friday for financial aid or payments that have beenreceived in the Hattiesburg business office by the previous Friday. Ifrefunds have not been picked up within a week after they are disbursed,they will be mailed.

General Admission RequirementsEach applicant to graduate programs at William Carey University

must

1. hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college oruniversity;

2. provide official transcript(s) of all college work completed todate. An official transcript is defined as one mailed directly fromthe institution to William Carey University.

In addition to these requirements, the applicant must meet anyadditional requirements as put forth by the respective graduate degreeprograms. Those requirements are listed in the following sections for theMaster of Education, the Master of Business Administration, the Masterof Science in psychology, and the Master of Science in Nursing degrees.

Applications for admission to graduate programs must be submittedby the Monday of general registration week. Consideration will be givento applications that are late due to extenuating circumstances.

Incomplete Admission StatusA student who appears to be eligible for admission but is unable to

supply certain required records prior to registration may be allowed toregister on an incomplete basis for one trimester. Students who do notprovide all official documents required for admission by the end of theterm will not be allowed to continue in the program. Permission forincomplete registration does not indicate official acceptance into WilliamCarey University. No financial aid will be processed or paid on studentswho have not been officially accepted.

ReadmissionA student who has not enrolled in a course within the past 12-month

period must apply for readmission. Readmission forms may be obtainedfrom the office of admissions or the William Carey University website.

Early AdmissionA candidate for a baccalaureate degree at William Carey may apply

for early admission to the graduate program, and may enroll for graduatecredit in courses not required for completion of the baccalaureate degreeprovided that the student is within six hours of meeting degreerequirements and has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0scale. A student may take only six hours of graduate courses prior tomeeting the requirements of the baccalaureate degree. Participation in theearly admission program is limited to one trimester only.

International Students

William Carey University is authorized by the U.S. Citizenship andImmigration Services (USCIS) to enroll nonimmigrant alien students.International students who wish to be admitted to William CareyUniversity must meet the requirements listed below.

1. Application—Application for admission can be downloaded fromthe Carey website (www.wmcarey.edu). Applications may also berequested by mail through the Office of Graduate Admissions on theHattiesburg campus. A US$25 application fee, which allows for a stu-dent’s application to be processed, should be mailed to the Office ofGraduate Admissions at 498 Tuscan Avenue, Box 13, Hattiesburg,MS, 39401.

2. Academic Records—Academic records indicating graduation fromany institution(s) of higher education or official transcript(s) fromU.S. institution(s) attended are required. An official transcript isdefined as one mailed directly from one institution to another. Allrecords must be in English before an I-20 from William CareyUniversity is issued.

• Transcripts from foreign institutions must be submitted to one oftwo foreign credential evaluation agencies: World EducationServices (www.wes.org) or AACRAO Foreign Credential Services(www.aacrao.org/credentials). The results from the evaluationmust be mailed to William Carey University. This process takesbetween 30 to 60 days.

3. Language Proficiency—Students who are not from nations whereEnglish is considered the official or second language are required totake either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or theMichigan Level Examination. A minimum score of 523 is required onthe paper-based TOEFL; a minimum score of 193 on the computerbased TOEFL; or a minimum score of 70 on the internet-basedTOEFL. Students who wish to take the Michigan Level Examinationmust meet the minimum requirement of a Proficiency Level II.

4. Certification of Finances—Proof of financial support for the dura-tion of the international student’s stay in the United States isrequired. This document can be downloaded from the Carey website(www.wmcarey.edu).

5. Proof of Immunizations—William Carey University requires oneimmunization for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) in the pastten years or two such immunizations in a lifetime.

6. Proof of Major Medical Coverage—Proof of medical coverage whileattending an institution of higher education in the United States isrequired. All international students are required to take a policy withthe university. Students will be assessed for the policy coverage at thebeginning of each trimester. More information on the health insur-ance policy adopted by William Carey University is available online(www.wmcarey.edu).

Additional Information—In order to receive an F-1 VISA, interna-tional students are to schedule an appointment with the nearest U.S. con-sulate or embassy in their country within 90 days of departure. Theymust take along their documentation, letter of acceptance, and I-20 for

The Office of Graduate Admissions may receive faxed copies;however, original documents must be mailed and placed in the student’sfile before any decision can be made.

International students should refer to the university calendar fordates of trimester breaks and religious and national holidays (i.e.Thanksgiving, Christmas) in preparation for travel.

Transfer CoursesNo more than six semester hours may be transferred from another

institution and applied toward an M.Ed., Ed.S., M.B.A., or M.S.N. Ninehours may be applied toward an M.S. degree in programs that requiremore than 36 hours. Transfer credits will be applicable only if theycontribute to the overall plan of study designed for the student. Nograduate work carrying a grade of less than a “B” will be accepted. Alltransfer credits must meet the six-year limit on the completion of thedegree. Independent study credit earned at another institution will not beaccepted.

Second Master’s DegreeA student holding a master’s degree may apply for a second master’s

degree in another area. Moreover, students holding the M.Ed. may applyfor a second M.Ed. in another certification area. Students must meet alladmissions and degree requirements for the second degree. A candidatefor a second degree may use six hours of graduate credit from the firstdegree toward a second degree in education or business and ninegraduate hours toward a second degree in psychology programs. Astudent must complete all requirements for the first degree beforeapplying for or beginning a second degree. This applies to all degrees.

Courses to be applied toward a second degree must have the approval ofthe dean, and grades in such courses cannot be below a “B.”

Students holding the M.S. in psychology with emphasis in industrialorganization may use an additional six hours toward the M.B.A. for a totalof 12 hours from the first degree. The limit of six hours of transfer creditmeans that a total of 24 hours must be taken at William Carey University.Further, students who have completed the MBA degree at William CareyUniversity may transfer a total of 12 graduate hours to the M.S. degreewith emphasis in industrial psychology. All other rules stated in thissection will be maintained as standards for the transfer of credit.

Changing Major or EmphasisWhen a student changes from one major to another or changes

emphasis within the major where there are different requirements foradmission, the student must reapply and meet the requirements of thenew program.

Financial AidFinancial aid programs are available to graduate students who

qualify. Financial aid applicants must be accepted for admission beforefinancial aid can be awarded. Non-degree seeking students are not eligi-ble for federal financial aid. For more information, contact the FinancialAid Office, (601) 318-6153 for Hattiesburg or (228) 897-7104 for Gulfport.

Attendance RegulationsGraduate students are expected to attend all class meetings.

However, an absence may be granted in case of an emergency. It is thestudent’s responsibility to contact the instructor regarding the absence,and the student is responsible for all work missed. Excessive absencesmay seriously affect the work of the whole class as well as that of theindividual students who are absent. Individual faculty members set theirown attendance regulations for their classes and inform their students ofthem; however, students must attend 80% of the class meetings in orderto receive credit for the course. The total number of absences for eachstudent shall be reported for each class by each faculty member at thetime of filing trimester grade rosters.

Change of Class Schedule(Dropping and Adding Courses)

1. No change of schedule, either in dropping a course or adding acourse, may be made except by permission of the student's academicadvisor and dean.

2. No student may register for a course after 10% of class meetings haveoccurred.

3. Courses dropped within the first three weeks of a trimester will berecorded as “W” (withdrawn). Courses dropped after three weeksand before the middle of a trimester are recorded as “WP”(withdrawn passing) or “WF” (withdrawn failing), and coursesdropped after the midterm will receive a grade of “F.” Any studentdropping a course at any time without the required approvalreceives an “F” in that course.

4. Courses offered in mini-terms or with special schedules will haveadd/drop dates proportionate to length of course.

WithdrawalsStudents desiring to drop a class or withdraw from the university

must do so formally in order to avoid academic and financial penaltiesand should contact the office of the director of graduate studies or deanof the school for the proper procedure. Students are considered officiallyregistered upon completion of the registration packets and payment offees even though they may not attend a class.

Campus Housing

Students desiring campus housing should contact the dean ofstudent development on the Hattiesburg campus and the director ofhousing on the Coast campus for information and fee schedules.

Right to Change RequirementsThis catalog and its contents are subject to change by action of the

university faculty. Possible changes include, but are not limited to, graduation requirements, admission requirements, tuition, fees, curricula, and course content. Students are responsible for reading andresponding to any such changes. The university is responsible for providing information to students on those changes.

TranscriptsTranscripts are issued by the registrar’s office.

1. An official transcript is one bearing the signature of the registrar andthe seal of the university and is mailed directly to whatever officialmay be designated by the student.

2. When a transcript bearing the stamp “Issued to Student” is given tothe person whose credits are transcribed thereon, the universityassumes no responsibility for its accuracy after it leaves theregistrar’s office.

3. Transcripts of credit will not be issued for those students who haveany type of administrative holds on their records.

Validation of Outdated CoursesBecause of new developments within academic disciplines, some

coursework may become outdated and not suitable for use toward adegree. The determination of whether or not a course has becomeoutdated is made by the school or department where that course istaught. Students with outdated William Carey coursework not older thanten years at the point of student’s initial program of graduate study mayvalidate it by successfully passing a test or completing required work ifprior approval is granted by the advisor, dean, and current instructor ofthat course. Outdated coursework at other institutions will not beaccepted.

Graduate CommitteeThe Graduate Committee is charged with the responsibility of

approving policy and curriculum changes in William Carey Universitygraduate programs. The committee is composed of faculty with graduaterank and graduate students. Faculty members are selected from theSchool of Education, the School of Nursing, the School of Psychology andCounseling, the School of Business, and from departments which offergraduate courses. 5. Applicants planning on teaching at the elementary or secondaryschool level in Mississippi must hold or qualify to hold a Class Ateacher’s license. If deemed necessary by the student’s advisorand/or the dean, students who are licensed in Mississippithrough the alternate route may be required to complete additional course work in the area of concentration to strengthenthe student’s academic preparation for graduate study. A copy ofthis license must be filed in the graduate office.

6. Prior to completing nine hours of graduate work, the studentmust declare a major and file a program plan signed by the student's advisor. This plan will be approved and becomes anapplication for candidacy for the degree.

B. It is no longer necessary to hold a Class A license in the same area inwhich the student is seeking an advanced license. Applicants holding a standard teacher’s license can get an AA license in thedesired area by completing the master's degree. The program ofstudy will include additional courses beyond the 30-hour master’sdegree in order to meet the requirements for licensure.

C. Upon special request by the student and the approval of the GraduateCommittee, the teacher license requirement may be waived only for a student pursuing a graduate degree in English or social science who iscurrently employed in a college, nonpublic institution or a position notrequiring a teacher’s license. In the event the licensure requirement iswaived, the following notation will be entered upon the student’stranscript: "Student does not meet requirements for teacher licensure."Students must request waiver in writing and must state the reason forthe request.

Admissions StatusAn applicant for the Master of Education degree program is

admitted to regular, probational, or nondegree graduate status as follows:

Regular—Regular graduate status will be granted to those studentswho meet all requirements for admission to the Master of Educationdegree program and are actively pursuing a graduate degree.

Probational—The following is used to grant probational status:

1. Student who meets all requirements for regular admission exceptfor the 2.5 GPA must have at least a GPA of 2.0 on the last 64hours of undergraduate work.

Students admitted as probational will be granted regular status uponcompletion of nine semester hours of graduate study at William CareyUniversity with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Nondegree—Nondegree status may be assigned to those studentswho meet the requirements for admission, but do not otherwise wish tobecome a candidate for a degree. These students may be enrolling incourses for reinstatement of expired teaching licenses or to eliminatecertification deficiencies at the undergraduate level prior to enrolling asprovisional or regular students. The nondegree status also applies tostudents who are ineligible to pursue a graduate degree but wish to takecourse work for nondegree purposes. No more than nine hours of creditfrom a nondegree status may apply toward a degree.

Off-Campus Transfer CoursesA maximum of 12 hours of off-campus courses may be applied

toward the M.Ed. degree. Permission from the dean and academic vicepresident is required for use of any additional off-campus credit. Amaximum of six hours may be transferred from another institution.However, a minimum of 15 hours must be earned in residence. Alltransfer courses must be approved.

Add-On EndorsementsStudents having master's degrees and a teaching license who wish to

take courses or add endorsements must file an application for admission.Add-on endorsements are offered in reading, health, gifted education,and mild/moderate disabled. Severe/profound disabilities can only beadded to the mild/moderate program of study. (See psychology sectionof this catalog for add-on endorsements in school counseling and schoolpsychometry.

Submission of Program PlanBy the end of the first trimester, the student must be officially accept-

ed as a candidate for a master’s degree. A program plan sheet must besubmitted to the director of graduate education outlining the courses the

Workshop Credit and Course NumberingNo more than six semester hours of workshop credit may be applied

toward the Master of Education degree. Three hours may apply to thearea of concentration and three hours may be used as an elective. Allworkshops are numbered as 593 or 693 courses, and named whenoffered. Special topic courses that are named when they are offered arenumbered 590 or 690 and can be taken for 1-3 hours of credit. Directedreadings courses are numbered 549 or 649.

Comprehensive Examination and Degree Application

The Master of Education degree comprehensive examinations for2007-2008 will be given on these dates:

November 10, 2007March 29, 2008 and July 12, 2008

Students must submit an application to take the comprehensiveexaminations and an application for the degree by these deadlines:

May graduation: October 15August graduation: March 31

Students must be taking their last six hours in order to qualify for comprehensives. Students failing any one section of the comps mayretake that portion of the exam during the same grading period. Studentsfailing two or more sections must wait until the next scheduled test dateto retake those sections. An application form is available in the School ofEducation. A copy of the scoring rubric is also available. Applications fordegree will be accepted up to 30 days after the respective deadlines. A feeof $50 is charged for late applications.

Application for LicensureStudents are responsible for making the proper application to the

Mississippi Department of Education for their Class AA license. Formsare available in the registrar's office or the department of education officeand online at the State Department of Education website(www.mde.K12.ms.us). The student must also complete a release-of-records form.

Completion of the degree does not automatically guarantee licensure. The student must meet all requirements for licensure specifiedby the Mississippi Department of Education and current law, which maydictate changes from the content of this publication.

NOTE: All education programs and requirements are subject to change due torequirements set forth by the Mississippi Department of Education and statelaw. The current requirements for licensure—if different from this catalog—willsupersede the catalog descriptions. New federal legislation requires each state tosubmit a definition for highly qualified teachers which adheres to federalguidelines. This legislation, the No Child Left Behind Act, will result in changesin requirements during the 2005-2006 calendar year.

Requirements for the Master of Education DegreeThese general requirements apply to all candidates for the Master of

Education degree:

1. Each student must have acquired regular graduate admissions status.

2. A minimum of 30 semester hours graduate work must be completedwith a minimum grade point average of 3.0, including work done inthe area of concentration. A student making a third grade of “C” orlower may not repeat any other courses and will be dismissed fromthe program.

3. Only six hours of course work in general education and in the area ofconcentration can be taken at the 500 level. Courses taken to meetlicense deficiencies or add-on endorsements may not be used for thedegree program.

4. Proficiency in writing and speaking the English language is a require-ment for the Master of Education degree. Students failing to exhibitan acceptable proficiency while performing class work will be askedto eliminate such deficiency by enrolling in a noncredit course inEnglish usage or by other appropriate methods. An informal interview with a candidate for the purpose of determining a plan ofaction in this area may be requested.

5. A student must complete all required work within a period of sixyears after enrolling in graduate courses.

6. A thesis is not an option in the Master of Education degree.

7. A written comprehensive examination will be required of eachcandidate prior to graduation. The contents of this examination willbe determined by the graduate faculty. A student must have met allother degree requirements and be enrolled in the final six hours inorder to take the comprehensive examination.

8. A signed program of study should be on file prior to completing 12hours.

9. Participation in the graduation ceremony is required. Degrees are notconferred in absentia, except by the office of academic affair's special permission for which students must submit a written request.Students who are candidates for May degrees are required to fileapplications for their degrees in the registrar’s office by October 15.Candidates for August graduation must file by March 31. Lateapplications will be accepted up to 30 days after the respectivedeadlines. There will be a $50 late fee in addition to the graduation fee.

Master of Education in the Art of Teaching(An alternate route to teacher licensure)

William Carey University has been approved for a unique programdesigned to provide an opportunity for noneducation graduates to enterthe teaching profession and to earn a Master of Education degree in the Artof Teaching. The program is designed to lead to full standard alternativelicensure within one year and the option of earning a master’s degree with-in one more year. Because of the unique nature of this program, all workmust be done at William Carey University.

Alternate route interns are required to secure employment inapproved school districts within a 60-mile radius of William CareyUniversity. Special permission is required if an intern is employed in aschool district out of the 60-mile area.

Steps Toward Standard Licensure

1. Admission to the Alternate Route ProgramA candidate must have an undergraduate degree with required

GPA of 2.5 on last 64 hours of undergraduate work and a passingscore on both the PRAXIS I and the PRAXIS II specialty area exami-nations. (Elementary Education PRAXIS II test is 0014). Each internmust be employed as a full-time classroom teacher in the area inwhich PRAXIS II was taken.

2. Initial Course Requirements (6 hours)A candidate must first successfully complete EDU 536—

Classroom Management and EDU 650—Tests, Measurements, andEvaluations. These courses must be completed prior to application forlicensure and to the internship. Students must complete the intern-ship within three years in order to gain a standard teaching certifi-cate.

3. Admission to the Internship (EDU 635 – 6 hours)After the successful completion of Step 2, a candidate will be

admitted to EDU 635, which is a two-term internship as a regularclassroom teacher. This course will include regularly scheduled sem-inars on the William Carey campus during this year.

Alternate route students will be enrolled in EDU 635 (Internship) incohort groups. A cohort is defined as a group of students who begin andend EDU 635– Internship at the same time. Interns will move through thetwo trimesters of internship in consecutive order (fall trimester–3 hours;winter trimester—3 hours).

After completing these three steps, a candidate will receive a stan-dard Mississippi Educator License in the area in which the PRAXIS spe-cialty areas was passed. If the candidate wishes to enter the M.Ed. pro-gram, the 12 hours earned in these steps will count toward the Master ofEducation in the Art of Teaching degree.

Admission to the Program

A candidate having successfully completed the initial 12 hours (EDU536, EDU 650, and EDU 635) leading to standard licensure as required bythe Mississippi Department of Education with at least a 3.0 GPA will beeligible for admission to the Master of Education in Art of Teachingprogram.

Biology (BIO)

The department of biological sciences, in support of the Master ofEducation degree, offers a graduate curriculum that provides studentswith an in-depth study of the areas of environmental biology andmolecular biology. Courses emphasize the current state of knowledgeand theory within these fields, as well as methods of translating thisinformation into classroom-friendly forms. M.Ed. candidates intendingto specialize in biology should have a strong background in thediscipline. The student's undergraduate coursework should include suchareas as ecology, botany, zoology, genetics, cell biology, and/or vertebratebiology. Graduate classes in biology are typically offered on a rotation;academic advisors will assist each student in the timely completion of thedegree.

Ordinarily, the M.Ed. candidate who wishes to specialize in Englishwill be an undergraduate English major or minor. In general, the

Admission RequirementsStudents are admitted to the specialist program as a cohort class.

When a sufficient applicant pool is available, prospective candidates willbe interviewed, provide a writing sample, and complete otherrequirements. No students will be admitted on a provisional orprobationary basis. Students may transfer in no more than six hours ofcoursework from any institution into the program. Coursework used in aprevious degree may not be used toward the specialist degree.

To fulfill requirements for admission to the specialist in elementaryeducation degree program, the student must:

1. Hold (or qualify to hold) a master's degree from an institution fullyaccredited by a recognized accrediting agency.

2. Hold (or qualify to hold) a Class AA certificate in elementaryeducation.

3. Present evidence of acceptable scholarship with an average of at least3.25 on previous master's degree work and have taken the GraduateRecord Exam or the Miller Analogy Test.

Have completed at least two years of successful teaching experience.

5. Complete and file with the graduate admissions' office the properapplication for admission to graduate school.

Program OverviewThe Master of Business Administration is designed for working adult

students and employers who are leaders in either private or public sectormanagement. M.B.A. graduates from William Carey University completea rigorous program that uniquely balances management theory withpractical decision making. This program is available to students with noprevious business course work, in addition to undergraduate businessmajors. Students accepted into the program will complete an individualplan of study ranging from 30 semester hours to 48 semester hours,depending on previous business course work. The MBA program provides academic credentials whichenhance employment advancement, appropriate technology skills, andthe opportunity to develop leadership skills.

General Admissions RequirementsIn order to be considered for admission to the program each

applicant must:

• Complete a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college oruniversity prior to enrollment.

• Submit an application packet to the graduate admissions office.

• Conduct a personal interview with a member of the admissionscommittee.

Admissions ProcessThe following must be submitted as part of the application packet:

• the completed application form,

• official transcripts of all college work completed,

• GMAT scores,

• two nominations from individuals familiar with the applicant'sabilities,

• TOEFL scores if applicable.

Each applicant is individually evaluated using two primary criteria:undergraduate grade point average and the applicant's score on theGraduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). The admissions evaluation score is calculated according to the following formula:

GMAT score + (200 x Undergraduate GPA)

Regular admission status will be granted if the admissionsevaluation score is greater than or equal to 1,000 points.

For individuals with managerial work experience who fail to meetthe 1,000 point minimum, an additional 10 points can be added for eachyear of work experience (up to a maximum of 10 years). The alternateformula for applicants with managerial work experience would be:

GMAT score + (200 x undergraduate GPA) + (10 x number of yearsof work experience*)

Regular admission status will be granted if the admissionsevaluation score on the alternate formula is greater than or equal to 1,000points.

* A maximum of ten years relevant work experience may be used.

Admissions StatusEach application for admission will be presented to the M.B.A.

Admissions Committee for approval. After review of the applicationpacket, the M.B.A. Admissions Committee may grant the applicant regular, probationary, or non-degree admission status. An applicant mustbe admitted to William Carey University prior to being considered foradmission for the M.B.A. degree.

A. Regular Admission Status

Regular admission status is awarded to an applicant who has 1,000or more points on either the regular admission formula or the alternate admission formula (described above).

B. Probationary Admission Status

Applicants who fail to meet the designated criteria for regularadmission status may be admitted on probation until evidence of

successful work is established. Probationary admission may begranted by the M.B.A. admissions committee to an applicant whodoes not meet the criteria for regular admission status but appears tobe capable of satisfactory performance in the M.B.A. program.

A student will remain on probation until the completion of at leastsix hours of course work in the program. Probationary students whohave a GPA of 3.00 or higher at the end of the probationary periodwill be upgraded to regular admission status. Probationary studentswho have a GPA below 3.00 at the end of the probationary periodwill be ineligible to continue in the M.B.A. program. All coursestaken to remove probationary status must be taken at William CareyUniversity.

C. Incomplete Admission Status

A student may be enrolled in the M.B.A. program under the"Incomplete Admission Status" under the conditions that he or shepresents a completed M.B.A. application, a copy of his or her collegetranscript reflecting graduation from an accredited collegeinstitution, submission of the completed "Graduate IncompleteAdmission" form, and the $25 application fee. This incomplete statuswill allow the M.B.A. student to complete one trimester in the M.B.A.program, but the student will not be allowed to continue withoutfurther completion of all requirements under the terms andconditions stated on the previous page under "Admissions Process.”This shall include: official transcripts of all college work completed,two nominations, leadership essay and completion of the GMAT. Allthe requirements of admission must be completed before the studentwill be allowed to continue following the trimester admitted underthe "Incomplete Admission Status.” Upon completion of all therequirements as stated, the student will be further evaluated todetermined his or her future status applying the standards of the"admission evaluation score" as specified under the previous section.Students on incomplete status, who would have been on probationonce the incomplete is removed, will be considered on probation forthat trimester.

D. Nondegree Admission

A limited number of students who do not desire to complete theM.B.A. degree may be admitted to M.B.A. classes as nondegreestudents. Up to 9 hours may be taken within the M.B.A. program asa nondegree student. Approval for such status is on a course bycourse basis by the M.B.A. admissions committee chair or M.B.A.

director. Students seeking nondegree status must provide transcriptsof all previous course work and a completed application form. Suchenrolled nondegree students are prohibited from enrolling in theMBA program in the future under Incomplete Status. Students musthave a 3.00 GPA on all MBA course work to be considered by theMBA admisisons committee for regular admission status.

If a student is not admitted because he or she does not meet theseadmissions criteria, the student may appeal the admission decision to theadmissions committee for reconsideration. A student may be admitted bythe admissions committee if the committee determines that the student has the potential for success in the M.B.A. program.Recommendations from the student's supervisors or other individualswill be taken into consideration by the committee.

Financial InformationM.B.A. students may finance their program in a variety of ways. The

program requires an important investment of time and money byapplicants and their employers. Scholarships, Veterans Administrationbenefits, assistantships, and loans are also summarized.

Financial—Tuition is $250 per semester hour for all courses.

Assistantships—Students who are interested in scholarships orassistantships should request information from the M.B.A. director.Assistantships provide opportunities to work in an area of need andinterest with the university’s faculty and staff.

Other Requirements for the Master of Business Administration

Candidates for the M.B.A. from William Carey University must haveacquired regular admissions status prior to application for graduation.

Students must have successfully completed the plan of studyapproved by the M.B.A. admissions committee with a minimum GPA of3.0 within a six year time frame.

A typical plan of study will contain a minimum of 30 semester hoursof credit. Program OverviewThe Master of Science degree in counseling psychology is designed

to prepare individuals for ministry and employment in a variety of fields:school guidance programs, community mental health centers, religiouscounseling centers, private practice, mental health institutionscommunity based facilities, and pastoral care. All M.S. degrees in thecounseling psychology programs may lead to licensure and/orcertification.

Master of Science DegreeThe School of Psychology and Counseling at William Carey

University offers the Master of Science degree in counseling psychologywith concentrations in counseling, school counseling, schoolpsychometry, Christian counseling, gerontology, and organizationalcounseling. The counseling degree program is designed to prepareprofessional counselors to practice in community health centers, privatecounseling centers, and private practice. Likewise, concentrations ingerontology, Christian counseling, and school counseling are intended toequip individuals to practice in their particular fields of interest. Thecounseling psychology degree programs are offered at the Hattiesburgcampus. The school counseling program is offered on the Gulfportcampus along with add-on endorsements in school counseling andschool psychometry. The organizational counseling concentration, whichis available in Gulfport only, is intended to equip graduates to serve inthis cutting-edge and ever-expanding area of practice as well as covering

Academic Requirements for AdmissionTo fulfill requirements for admission to either of the Master of Science

degree programs the student must:

• have completed a baccalaureate degree from an accreditedcollege or university.

• have completed coursework that reflects adequate preparationfor pursuing an advanced degree in either counselingpsychology or industrial/organizational psychology.

• possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 for thelast 64 hours of course work.

• have completed undergraduate courses in general psychology,counseling psychology, abnormal psychology, and/or statisticalmethods.

• have made up any deficiencies in undergraduate coursepreparation prior to the completion of the first 18 hours ofgraduate coursework.

Individual programs and concentrations have specific requirementsin addition to those listed above:

• Students in gerontology MUST have Introduction to Gerontologyat the undergraduate level.

• Applicants with a GRE score (verbal plus quantitative) lowerthan 700 or Miller’s Analogy score of less than 366 will not beconsidered for any degree program in counseling psychology .

• Students in psychometrics and school counseling desiringcertification need to present a valid standard Mississippiteaching license or qualify to hold a standard teaching licensewhen applying or meet GRE requirements in bulletin forpsychometrics or school counseling.

Undeclared Admission

A student who meets minimum admission requirements may beallowed one trimester of undeclared admission. By the end of the firsttrimester, a student must declare an area of concentration and complete adegree plan.

Nondegree Admission

A student who holds a master’s degree from an institution withcomparable admission requirements may be accepted as a nondegree orcontinuing education student in order to take specific courses forlicensure and/or certification. Should such an individual seek to becomea degree seeking student, all requirements for regular admission as adegree student must be met. Students who hold a master’s degree andseek a second degree or additional credentials will have an individualprogram designed to ensure an appropriate theoretical and practicalbackground. A minimum of 18 semester hours must be earned at WilliamCarey University in order to obtain institutional recommendation.

Counseling Psychology

The Graduate Records Exam (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test(MAT) is required for admission to degree programs in counselingpsychology or psychology.

• Christian Counseling: A combined score (verbal plusquantitative) of 700 on the GRE or 366 on the MAT.

• Counseling: A minimum of 900 on the GRE General Test (Verbalplus Quantitative) or 380 on the MAT as well as undergraduatecourses in psychology and/or counseling.

• School Counseling: A minimum of 850 on the GRE General Test (Verbal plus Quantitative) or 376 on the MAT. Applicants who donot hold a teacher license may use the PRAXIS I as an alternativeto the GRE or MAT. PRAXIS I scores comparable to a GRE scoreof 850 will be accepted.

• Gerontology: A minimum of 700 on the GRE General Test (verbalplus quantitative) or 366 on the MAT.

• School Psychometry: A minimum of 850 on the GRE GeneralTest (Verbal plus Quantitative) or 376 on the MAT.

• Child/Adolescent Therapy: A combined score (verbal plusquantitative) of 700 on the GRE or 366 on the MAT.Undergraduate preparation should include courses in generalpsychology, developmental psychology and/or child/adolescentpsychology.

Students who desire to change emphasis areas must submit a newapplication form and meet requirements in this catalog for the program.

Organizational Counseling

A minimum of 700 on the GRE (verbal plus quantitative ) or 366 onthe MAT is required for regular admission.

There is no probationary or incomplete admission to any of theprograms.

Program Policies/ Requirements• All application materials (application, application fee, official

transcripts, recommendations, official test score reports) should besubmitted to William Carey University office of graduate admissionsno later than three weeks prior to the beginning of classes.

• All work for the degree must be completed within a period not toexceed six years.

• Transfer Credit: No more than nine semester hours of credit may betransferred from another institution. Transferred credits will beapplicable only if they contribute to the overall plan of studydesigned for the student. No graduate work carrying a grade of lessthan “B” will be accepted. All transfer credits must meet the six-yearlimit on the completion of the degree. Independent study creditearned at another institution will not be accepted.

• Class Attendance: Graduate students are expected to attend all classmeetings. However, an absence may be granted in case of anemergency. It is the student's responsibility to contact the instructorregarding the absence, and the student is responsible for all workmissed. The student who misses more than two classes willautomatically fail the course.

• Practica/Internships: Students who intend to register for practica orinternships must gain the approval of the appropriate instructor notless than five weeks prior to the beginning of the term.

• Credentialing: Completion of a degree program does not guaranteecredentialing. Individuals who are seeking licensure or certificationmust satisfy all requirements of the various credentialing boards.Such students should make contact with the appropriate agency toobtain requirements prior to enrolling in a program at William CareyUniversity. It is the student’s responsibility to satisfy theserequirements.

• Financial Information: Mississippi students may finance theirprogram in a variety of ways. The program requires an importantinvestment of time and money. Scholarships, veterans

• Professional Conduct: The graduate program in psychology isdesigned to prepare students to function in a mental health setting.This may include institutional/agency employment or privatepractice. In either event a counselor is bound by the code ofprofessional conduct of the American Counseling Association(ACA). Violations of the code may result in revocation of credentialsor dismissal from the job. As a part of the training provided byWilliam Carey University, all students are required to be familiarwith and adhere to the Code of Professional Conduct; local, state andfederal law; and rules and regulations of the university. Violations ofany of these may result in disciplinary actions, including, but notlimited to dismissal from the graduate program.

Workshop Credit and Course NumberingNo more than six semester hours of workshop credit may be applied

toward the Master of Science in counseling psychology degree. Threehours may apply to the area of concentration and three hours may beused as an elective. All workshops are numbered as 593 or 693 courses,and named when offered. Special topic courses that are named when theyare offered are numbered 590 or 690 and can be taken for 1-3 hours ofcredit. Directed readings courses are numbered 549 or 649.

Organizational CounselingProgram Description

The Master of Science in Counseling Psychology, concentrationorganizational counseling, combines the knowledge and skill ofcounseling theory and practice with organizational behavior expertise.Students will learn core counseling skills and receive specialized trainingin organizational counseling. This degree provides experiential learning

opportunities through participation in required internships. The programdesign integrates traditional counseling courses with organizationalcounseling strategies that utilize assessment, program planning, andconsultation.

Tuition will be $250.00 per graduate hour. Courses required from thebusiness and education curriculum will be cross listed with a psychologyprefix. The specific competencies in the program are those competenciesand education requirements outlined in the Rules, Regulations, andApplication Guidelines for the Mississippi Board of Examiners for LicensedProfessional Counselors.

Other Requirements for the Master of ScienceStudents must have successfully completed the plan of study

Child/Adolescent Counseling Ministry Certification

In response to the increasing demand and stressors facing today'sfamilies, and the role of the children's minister in addressing these issues,William Carey University has developed a Child/Adolescent CounselingMinistry Certification program to give children's ministers additionaltraining and counseling skills to be used in the church setting. Theprogram will result in a Certificate of Completion indicating that thechildren's minister has received this additional training.

This certification program can be completed in two years. It will requiresix seminars. This program was designed to meet the need of children'sministers who are already practicing in their field, but, need counselingtraining to be more effective.

The six seminars are as follows:

1. But Counseling is NOT in My Job Description(One day at annual conference plus online delivery modality)

Course Description:

This course will explore counseling from a children's minister'sperspective. While children's ministers are not trained counselors,counseling is a real part of a children's minister’s job. Children'sministers need basic counseling information and skills to counselchildren with minor issues, as well as information about when andhow to refer to a trained professional.

2. Dealing with Difficult People and Their Children(On site at annual conference)

Course Description:

This course will enable students to successfully handle encounterswith challenging parishioners, parents, teachers, and children. It willaddress counseling issues with special populations, anger controlissues, and communicating with different personality types.

3. Helping Families with Children(Combination of classroom and online delivery modality)

Course Description:

This course will enable the children's minister to accurately assess andmeet the needs of families with children within their ministry. Thechildren's minister will learn how to work with children within thefamily structure and enable parents to maximize their parenting skills.

4. Adventure Based Counseling(Class will be held on the campus of William Carey University)

Course Description:

This course will explore adventure-based counseling techniques andtreatment plans used with the child and adolescent populations.Emphasis will be given to problem-solving skills and initiatives. Useof techniques with clients with addictions, self-destructive behaviors,and attention problems will be explored.

5. Introduction to Counseling Children(On site at annual conference)

Course Description:

This course addresses basic assessment procedures, therapeutictechniques, and models for counseling children. Special emphasis willbe given to age-appropriateness, development needs, and workingwith the child within the context of the family. The student will alsodevelop skills in working with parents, as they relate to their children.

6. Current Issues in Counseling Children(Combination of classroom and online delivery modality)

Course Description:

This course will explore the current issues facing children in the areaof counseling. The children's minister will gain insight into theeveryday issues that children face in our society (i.e., peer pressure,childhood depression, eating disorders, self-mutilation, etc.).

520 Organizational Context and Workplace Culture—A study of theorientation to organizational culture and a presentation ofvariations in workplace structure and context with an explorationof the complex nature of organizations, human resource roles andpolicies, and management issues.—3 hours.

551 Psychological Statistics—A study of statistical procedurescommonly used in psychological research. Descriptive andinferential statistics are covered, including measures of centraltendency, variability and correlation. Tests of significance andanalysis of variance are studied. No mathematical ability isassumed beyond the basic skills of arithmetic and algebraicmanipulations—3 hours.

570 Multicultural Counseling—A study of the social and culturalfoundations of counseling, including studies of ethnic groups,subcultures, changing roles of women, sexism, urban and ruralsocieties, population patterns, cultural mores, use of leisure time,and differing life patterns—3 hours.

572 Psychological Aspects of Aging—The purpose of this course is toexpand upon the sociological aspects of aging presented in PSY570. The role of the psychologist, as well as the psychologicalfactors surrounding the person who is aging, will be emphasized.The importance of planning for this stage of life span in order toremain psychologically healthy will be discussed . This course will

574 Case Management—Advanced studies in case management,including case management as an approach to service delivery, isthe focus of this course. Emphasis will be placed on networkingand linkage using various roles and techniques. This course willrequire extensive research and a poster session exhibiting results ofthe research proposal—3 hours.

575 Use and Interpretation of Tests—Studies in the theory ofindividual and group tests of intelligence, personality, interests andattitudes. Interpretation of test results and use of results intherapy/program planning is included.—3 hours.

576 Psychopharmacology—An introduction to psychopharmacologywith a focus on features and characteristics of psychotropic drugswhich are commonly used in applied settings of interest topsychologists and counselors.—3 hours. Prerequisite: PSY 651.

654 Organization and Administration of Senior Services—The coursewill introduce the student to the legislative and administrativeissues and practices which serve as the foundation for seniorservices. Not only will the student become quite knowledgeableabout the Older American’s Act but will also be aware of otherstate and federal laws and regulations surrounding services for thispopulation. The course will serve as the foundation for theGerontology Internship which will be served in a service systemfor seniors—3 hours (offered in the summer of odd-numberedyears).

Program Overview

The Master of Science degree in Nursing is designed for registerednurses who are seeking preparation as a nurse educator with an adulthealth focus. The nurse educator concentration prepares graduates forstaff development roles in health care settings or to assume faculty rolesin nursing education at the associate degree or baccalaureate degreelevels. Graduates participate in clinical experiences in adult healthsettings and in teaching environments. Graduates begin preparation tobecome eligible for national specialty certification as an advanced nurseeducator (ANE). Students may be eligible to take the certification examupon graduation. A post-master’s program option is available forregistered nurses holding a master’s degree from an accredited school ofnursing.

Graduate Competencies

1. The learner will utilize scientific foundations and theoreticalframeworks to implement essential knowledge and skills in theadvanced nurse educator role. Those essentials, as described by theAmerican Association of Colleges of Nursing, include:

Admission Requirements for the M.S.N. Program

In addition to the general admission requirements to the graduate school,each applicant must:

1. Hold a baccalaureate degree from a nationally accredited schoolof nursing.

2. Submit a statement of professional goals and current resume.

3. Hold a current unencumbered Mississippi RN license.

4. Have an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or a GPA of 2.5 on thelast 30 undergraduate hours.

5. Submit scores for the Graduate Record Exam.

Admission Requirements for the Post-Master’s Programs

Each applicant must:

1. Hold a Master’s degree from an accredited school of nursing.

2. Submit a statement of professional goals and current resume.

Admission Status

An applicant for the Master of Science in Nursing degree program isadmitted to regular, probational, or nondegree graduate status as follows:

Regular—Regular graduate status will be granted to those studentswho meet all requirements for admission to the program and areactively pursuing a degree.

Probational—Probational graduate status may be granted to thosestudents who meet all except one of the designated admissionrequirements.

Nondegree—Nondegree status may be assigned to those studentswho meet the requirements for admission, but do not wish to becomea candidate for a degree. No more than nine hours of credit earned ina nondegree status may apply toward a degree.

Health Status Requirements

All students entering nursing courses are required to have a com-pleted School of Nursing health examination form. All students mustsubmit the results of appropriate screening for TB annually. Failure tocomply with all health requirements will result in the inability to attendthe clinical portion of a course and failure of the course.

All students must complete (re)certification of CPR for the HealthProfessional either annually or every two years, depending on the clinicalfacilities used. This will be done at an institution of the student's choice.Students are responsible for submitting evidence of current certificationto the nursing office for their file. Failure to do so will result in the inabil-ity to attend the clinical portion of a course and failure of the course.

Criminal Background Check

All students enrolled in nursing must have clearance of criminalbackground checks prior to participating in nursing clinical courses. Thisis a mandatory requirement as part of the Mississippi state law, Section43-13-11 of Mississippi Code of 1972 and in accordance with R.S. 37:921,LAC 64:XLVII.3403 and LAC 46:XLVII.3331 of the Louisiana State Boardof Nursing.

After initial enrollment, any subsequent disciplinary action, arrest,charge, addiction, or impairment shall also be reported immediately tothe dean of nursing. Failure to report any and all subsequent disciplinaryactions, arrests, or impairment will constitute falsification of records andmay result in loss of licensure as a registered nurse.

Drug Testing

All students enrolled must provide evidence of a negative drugscreen prior to participating in nursing clinical courses. Random drugscreening will be done for students enrolled in clinical courses. Refusal bya student to submit to testing will result in denial of admission for newstudents and immediate dismissal from the School of Nursing for contin-uing students.

Any admitting student who tests positive for illegal drugs must with-draw from clinical nursing courses. The student may reapply for admis-sion in one year and will be admitted based on admission criteria as anynew student making application.

Any continuing student who tests positive for illegal drugs mustwithdraw from clinical nursing courses. The student may make a writtenappeal for re-admission in six months to the Nursing APG Committee.

All costs associated with drug testing and criminal backgroundchecks are the responsibility of the student.

Requirements for the Master of Science in Nursing Degree

These general requirements apply to all candidates for the Master ofScience in Nursing degree:

1. Each student must have acquired regular graduate admissionsstatus.

2. All required courses must be completed with a minimum gradepoint average of 3.0. Only two grades lower than a B are allowed.

3. Proficiency in writing and speaking the English language is arequirement for the Master of Science in Nursing degree.Students failing to exhibit an acceptable proficiency whileperforming class work will be asked to eliminate such deficiencyby enrolling in a noncredit course in English usage or by otherappropriate methods. An informal interview with a candidate forthe purpose of determining a plan of action in this area may berequested.

4. A student must complete all required work within a period of sixyears after enrolling in graduate nursing courses.

5. Participation in the graduation ceremony is required. Degrees arenot conferred in absentia, except by special permission of theOffice of Academic Affairs, for which students must submit awritten request. Students who are candidates for May degreesare required to file applications for their degrees in the registrar’soffice by October 15. Candidates for August graduation must fileby March 31. Late applications will be accepted up to 30 daysafter the respective deadlines. There will be a $50 late fee inaddition to the graduation fees.
