AcademicRequirementsBoththeDepartmentandtheUniversitydefinethemajorrequirementsforeachstageofstudy.Thefirstyearoftheprogramisgearedtowardsgivingstudentsatheoreticalfoundationsothattheymaybegintoformulateideasforaresearchproject.Allgraduatestudentsareexpectedtobeinresidence(oncampus)duringtheirfirstyearintheprogram.Attheendofthefirstyear,studentswillsubmitaportfolioofsubstantiveworktotheirPreliminaryCommittee(seepage11).ResidencyRequirementInaccordancewithSenateRegulation686,theminimumresidencerequirementforthePh.D.degreeissixterms,threeofwhichmustbespentinresidenceattheUniversityofCalifornia,SantaCruzcampus.Residenceisestablishedbythesatisfactorycompletionofonecourseperterm.GoodAcademicStandingandProbationAdulyregisteredgraduatestudentisconsideredtobeingoodstandingsolongasthestudent'sdepartmentdeterminesthatheorsheismakingsatisfactoryprogresstowardaterminaldegree.Thedepartmentandthegraduatedeanreviewtheacademicprogressofeachcontinuinggraduatestudentannually.

IftheAnthropologyDepartmentdeemsastudent'sworkunsatisfactory,heorshemaybeplacedonprobation.Astudentwhoseacademicprogresshasbeenfoundunsatisfactoryintwosuccessiveannualreviewswillbesubjecttodismissalfromtheuniversity.

awardedfellowshipshavelowestpriorityfordepartmentsupportintheformofemploymentorfellowships.AllstudentsareexpectedtoapplyforTAshipsoutsidethedepartment.WiththeAnthropologyNewTAMentorshipProgram(ANTAMP),anthropologystudentsaretrainedandmentoredtobeTAs.Besidesprovidingprofessionalizationtostudents,ANTAMPalsogivesstudentsacompetitiveedgeinapplyingforoutsideTAships.Again,studentswhoareabletofindemploymentoutsidethedepartmentenablethedepartmenttoreallocateresourcesforotheranthropologystudentsinneed.Acommunalapproachtomeansofsupportmaximizestheavailabilityofresources,thusbenefitingahighernumberofstudents.Intimesofsupportscarcity,thedepartmentencouragesstudentstopartnerwiththedepartmentinfindingandutilizingsupportsourceseffectively.Eachsuccessfuleffortcanmakeadifferenceineverystudent’sacademiccareer.Pre-QEStudentsReceivePriorityStudentswhoareearlyintheprogram,primarilyfirstthroughthirdyears,arelesslikelytohavethemeansofsecuringoutsidesupportduetotheirjuniorstature.Studentswhohavenotadvancedtocandidacyalsohavelimitedemploymentoptions.Forexample,theytypicallycannotholdTeachingFellowpositions.Furthermore,firstthroughthirdyearstudentsarerequiredtoenrollandcompletespecificcourserequirements,andtheyarenotallowedtoutilizecost-savingenrollmentstatusessuchasinabsentiaorparttimeenrollment.Asthesejuniorstudentshavelessflexibilityandlesssupportoptions,thedepartmentprioritizestheminsupportallocation.Post-QEStudents’SupportFactorsThedepartmentrealizesthatstudentsmid-program,suchasthoseinthefieldorjustreturningfromthefield,arealsoinaprecariouspositionwhenitcomestosupport.Reintegratingfromthefieldisachallenge,anditisdifficultforstudentstoactivelyseekmeansofsupportatadistance.Forthesereasons,thedepartmentisworkingtowardsintegratingsupportallocationforthesestudents.Currently,thedepartmenttypicallycoversinabsentiafees,includinghealthinsurance,forfourthyearstudentswhileinthefield.Theavailabilityofinabsentiafundingforpost-fourthyearstudentsfeesdependsonamyriadoffactors,andthusthissupportisnotguaranteed.TheGraduateProgramCoordinatorwillcontactallstudentsatthebeginningoftheschoolyeartodiscusstheirneedsforsupportandclarifyoptions.Priorityforsupportsteadilydeclinesasstudentsadvancethroughtheprogram.Thus,studentsearlierintheprogramhavepriorityoverstudentsmoreadvancedintheprogramOtherfactors,suchasacademicmeritor,conversely,failuretomaintaingoodacademicstanding,alsoimpactpriorityconsiderations.StudentsbeyondNormativeTime
