Congratulations graduating senior class of2009! This is a joyful occasion and I saluteyou and your families on your achievement.

As freshmen each of you set a goal to earnyour diploma and, after years of persistence,you achieved it. Remember this, graduates:goal setting and persistence got you here to-day and goal setting and persistence will getyou where you’re going tomorrow.

Surveying your ranks, I envision highlysuccessful and ethical citizens. I see tomor-row ’s accountants, entrepreneurs, police-men, pilots, artists, educators, engineers,doctors, soldiers, carpenters and ministers. Isee creative problem solvers, good neigh-bors, involved parents and engaged citizens.I see the future of our na-tion!

Regardless of what youchoose to be and whereveryou go, make the decisionnow to be your best. Afterall, you are graduates of theSt. Vrain Valley School Dis-trict and your parents, yourteachers, the communityand I expect you to be aforce for good in the worldand a model for students following in yourfo o t s t e p s.

Graduation day is like very few others inyour young life. With small steps, year-after-year, grade-by-grade, you arrived to this day,poised to embrace the future. Many of youwill enroll in universities or community col-leges, enlist in military service, attend atrade school, pursue an online degree whileobtaining valuable work experience, or takea gap year and donate your time and energyto humanitarian service. These are wisechoices!

Nonetheless, you will be challenged andtested. Like graduates who’ve walked beforeyou, it’s normal to experience moments ofdifficulty and doubt. In times of uncertaintyor confusion, I urge you to recall what youlearned while earning this diploma, goal set-ting and persistence — always taking steps,small ones if necessary, in relentless pursuitof your goals.

I also would like to share this advice withyou because it has served me well:

Hold yourself to a high level of integrity;don’t fear failure, it brings opportunity;do what’s right, not just what’s easy;try not to take things personally;nurture confidence and forgiveness;learn from mistakes — yours and others’;solve problems with creativity and innova-

tion;communicate to be understood;be tolerant of others’ d i f f e re n c e s ;practice patience and understanding;be bold, brave and courageous;make time for reading, writing and

singing;don’t give in when the going gets tough;know your talents, celebrate accomplish-

ments; and,be a lifelong learner.Graduates, the future is yours to realize.You have the potential to cure cancer,

bring peace to a war-torn country, discoveranother universe, author a best-selling book,heal the environment and successfully carryout the duties of elected office. You might betempted to think you are ordinary, but I dis-agree. Extraordinary potential is within you.

In closing, I won’t say goodbye, I’ll just say“see you soon.” I look forward to hearingabout your achievements in the news, chanceencounters at the grocery store and receiv-ing updates about your accomplishmentsfrom teachers, parents and family friends.

Alexander Dawson student talks about achievements, music and travels

REDERICK — Most kids saythey can’t wait to get out of highschool, but four Frederick HighSchool juniors are so ready toleave, they are graduating early.

Scott Sorensen, Meghan Tafoya, ChelseaSeele and Harley Shade have completed thenecessary credits.

So instead of sitting home on May 23, theywill be walking across the stage, acceptingtheir diplomas.

“I’m excited. We get our cap and gownsoon,” Shade, 17, said in late April.

To be eligible for early graduation, thestudents also had to be accepted into col-l e ge.

“They can’t just graduate and not go any-w h e re, ” school counselor Adam Kohn said.

Shade was a little disappointed that shehad to be accepted to college to graduateearly, she said.

“That was kind of bad, because I wantedto take a year off,” said Shade, who will at-tend Red Rocks Community College. Shadelives in Dacono, while the other three alllive in Firestone.

Sorensen, 17, earned early admission tothe University of Colorado School of Engi-neering and Applied Sciences and plans tostudy aerospace engineering.

Tafoya is headed to Metropolitan StateCollege of Denver for a degree in psycholo-gy and wants to join the Peace Corps aftercollege, she said.

Sixteen-year-old Seele will go to ColoradoState University at Pueblo, where she willbe roommates with a friend from FrederickHigh. She intends to major in business, shes a i d.

Eight Frederick High School studentslooked into graduating early, Kohn said. Hemeets with students and their parents, andthe students meet with principal Jim Sund-berg, as well.

Sorensen long planned to graduate early,he said, because he was held back in kinder-garten and is among the oldest in his class.He’ll turn 18 in August, he said.

Throughout the school year, Kohn hadseveral informal conversations with the stu-dents about leaving high school early, hes a i d.

Until mid-April, it looked like five juniorswould graduate this spring, but then onechanged his mind. In 2008, one junior decid-ed two days before graduation to come backfor senior year, Kohn said.

“College is not just academics. It’s alsothe environment,” Kohn said. “If they’re notready, they usually figure it out.”

These four students seem prepared,though.

“T h ey ’re ready to get out of the highschool environment,” Kohn said. “T h eywant to start their life.”

But the students don’t seem to be expect-ing big changes between high school andc o l l e ge.

“I don’t think it’s be too much different,”Shade said, adding that she thinks collegewill make her a better and stronger person.

Sorensen said, “It’s just going to be like anew school.”

Seele, the youngest of the four, said herparents aren’t too concerned about her go-ing away to college shortly after her 17thb i r t h d ay.

CSU-Pueblo is just a few hours away, af-ter all.

“I’ll see them a lot,” Seele said.These students don’t expect to miss their

senior year of high school, they said.Many of their friends have graduated or

are graduating this year.Sorensen said, “My friends are pretty

pumped because I’m graduating withthem.”

LAFAYETTE — Stevie Wolf.His name has been in the Times-

Call before, in the prep sportsscores; with October’s students ofthe month; and on the listing of theall-area tennis players.

Here, as Paul Harvey would havesaid, is the rest of the story.

Stevie Wolf, 17, is an accom-plished guitarist who writes songsand plays bass, drums and piano aswe l l .

Throughout high school, he was ahigh honor roll student at AlexanderDawson School, a private, college-preparatory school south of Long-mont.

He was named a National Merit

Scholarship finalist; he will studymusic Tufts University in Boston.

Fluent in Spanish, he volunteeredto help underprivi-leged people inMexico and St.Louis. He’s com-pleted more than300 hours of com-munity servicesince June 2006.

He describeshimself as a Chris-tian and a Bud-dhist, and he spent

three weeks last summer living withmonks in Thailand.

And he has been diagnosed withTo u re t t e ’s syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

To u re t t e ’s syndrome is a neurolog-ical disorder that causes repeated,sudden and involuntary movementsor speech, known as tics.

“Music was my tic ... I’d alwayssing a song in my head,” said Wolf,who lives in Boulder. He’s turnedthat music in his head into 25 writtensongs, he said.

He started studying guitar in sev-enth grade for what he now sayswere “pretty superficial reasons. ...It’s pretty cool.”

Within a few months, though, herealized he loves music and he ex-panded his repertoire from rock ’n’roll to jazz and classical.

He started a guitar club at Daw-son, so younger students could learnto play, and he annually attends aworld-renown guitar workshop in

California during the summer.“Music has always had a huge in-

fluence on my brain,” Wolf said.Because of his disorders, Wolf

said, “My brain gets a lot moretired, trying to focus.”

So staying organized, getting hisschoolwork and homework done —and doing it all well and on time —has been a challenge for him.

But those disorders also seem tohave made Wolf more insightfulthan many of his peers.

“I realized that life is somethingwe only live once,” Wolf said inApril. So he decided that he likedlearning and he wanted to take ad-vantage of every opportunity hec o u l d.

He spent two weeks of summer2007 studying British politics, cre-

ative writing and leadership at Ox-ford University. For the last quarterof his sophomore year, he lived inSeville, Spain, attending the Interna-tional School of Europe.

Last summer’s time with the Bud-dhist monks was Wolf’s favorite trip,though.

“It was a pretty interesting spiri-tual journey,” Wolf said.

It taught him to look at life andhow people interact, he said.

“The monks taught me a lot aboutthat,” Wolf said. It helps him betterunderstand the people around him,he said.

“We all have lots of problems.”
