School of Continuing and Professional Education, City University of Hong KongThe School of Continuing and Professional Education of City University of Hong Kong (CityU SCOPE) has been a pioneer and major provider of quality professional and life-long education in Hong Kong. CityU SCOPE provides lifelong education for professional practice, knowledge enhancement and self-development and to respond to emerging needs in the industry due to social and technological change. Those who are keen to upgrade and improve themselves, regardless of their learning needs, will find that CityU SCOPE’s quality programmes facilitate their progression along the qualifications ladder.

Since 1992, the School has developed partnerships with non-local universities to develop internationally-competitive programmes to nurture all-rounded graduates through well-articulated curriculum which places strong emphasis on professional competence. Up to now, we have nurtured over 30,000 bachelor degree graduates, and many of them are now making significant contributions to various sectors of society.

This year, CityU SCOPE continues to offer a range of postgraduate and undergraduate programmes leading to non-local awards in various disciplines. To date, all eight 3-year non-local degree programmes and sixteen non-local top-up degree programmes offered by SCOPE have been successfully accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ). The accredited status of these programmes has guaranteed both the programme quality and the eligibility of our full-time students to apply for government grants and loans, and to participate in appropriate government internship and scholarship schemes. Graduates of these programmes are also recognized by the Government of the HKSAR for employment.

We pride ourselves on the diversity of our programmes and the standard of our graduates. With the concerted efforts of the dedicated and experienced teaching team of SCOPE, together with our overseas partners, we will continue to provide you with an engaging and rewarding learning experience.

Sheffield Hallam UniversityNamed University of the Year for Teaching Quality* we are one of the most popular modern universities in the UK with over 34,500 students.

The University is ranked 4th in the country for satisfaction with opportunities to apply learning to real-world problems. This applied focus informs our teaching, which includes professions such as engineering, science, nursing and business, as well as teacher education, art, law and paramedic practice. It makes our teaching in subjects such as mathematics, history, English and sociology, particularly distinctive, with a strong emphasis on preparing our graduates for success in employment.

It also drives our world-leading research across a broad spectrum of disciplines, in areas as diverse as science, sport, social science, arts and engineering. Our research excellence is now ranked in the top five of all UK modern universities, moving up 25 places in the UK’s most recent Research Excellence Framework.

We continue to shape Sheffield’s skyline with major developments. In January we launched our campus masterplan which places the University at the heart of the city.

The campus masterplan is a 25-year proposal to create a sustainable and flexible campus. The first phase will see approximately £220 million invested over the next five years. It includes new buildings for the Business School and social sciences, refurbishing the Students’ Union building, known as The HUBS, creating a University Green and improving our current estate.

Next year we will launch our £14 million Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC). Situated at the heart of the Olympic Legacy Park in the east end of Sheffield, it will be the most advanced centre for researching physical activity in the world, creating ‘innovations that help people move’, tackling the key global issues of static levels of physical activity and rising obesity.

With exciting plans for the future, new leadership and a renewed focus upon playing a leading role both globally and within the wider city region, the University is looking forward to an even brighter future as the UK’s leading applied university.* Awarded by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020

Our history and placeHallam’s story is one of partnership and growth and begins in the reign of Queen Victoria with the establishment of the School of Design in 1843. This was a small school which delivered courses to encourage the skills which would lead to greater competitiveness and quality in industry.

It was the first institution of its kind in Sheffield and proved so popular that it moved to larger premises becoming the School of Art in 1850 and by 1859 had blossomed to over 1,000 students with more diversified courses in areas such as teaching and art. The School became a renowned hub for design and creativity and is now known as the Sheffield Institute of Arts.

A parallel story can be found in the history of the city’s colleges of Education and Technology, which merged together with the School of Art over the period from 1969–1976 forming one of the UK’s first polytechnics. University status was granted on 26th October 1992 establishing Sheffield Hallam University.

About SheffieldBordering the Peak District National Park and in the county of Yorkshire, Sheffield is one of the largest cities in the UK known worldwide as the centre of steel making for over a century.

There is plenty to see and do with two famous football clubs (Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday), the largest theatre complex outside London, countless parks and outdoor activities spread across seven hills. Sheffield is home to the film, the Full Monty, and music legends such as Pulp, Def Leppard, the Human League and the Arctic Monkeys. It is a city of festivals and making and Sheffield Hallam University continues to play its part in being at the heart of all these activities.

Academic dressTo 21st century graduates the traditional cap, gown and hood has come to symbolise a special day of achievement. Yet this symbolic outfit was once the everyday wear of Europe’s scholars and has its origins in the very first medieval universities of Europe.

As fashions changed, church and university institutions retained their traditional styles of dress. So the robes on display today are the direct descendants of the everyday clothes of men and women in the Middle Ages.

Each university has its own distinctive version of this academic dress. Most universities keep their gowns the same colour but different styles are available for different levels of degrees such as bachelors, masters and doctorates as well as, in some cases, for new awards such as certificates, postgraduate diplomas and foundation degrees.

Sheffield Hallam’s colours are burgundy and silver, but the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor have their own distinctive styles of robe. The Chancellor’s is scarlet and gold and the Vice-Chancellor’s is black and silver. Other representatives of the University who attend graduation and sit on the platform wear the dress of the universities from which they graduated.
