On May 14, The Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary will be leaving the Elmer L. Towns Religion Hall building and relocating to the original Thomas Road Baptist Church campus (701 Thomas Road). The Center for Worship will then relocate to the Religion Hall with the School of Religion. A number of things must happen in order for this to take place. First, renovations are in process at 701 Thomas Road campus, with everything brand new for the Seminary as they move in. New floors, carpet, offices, classrooms, conference rooms, along with new heating and cooling will be in place.

The Seminary will have two student lounges, a reading room, a Korean Program Center, new faculty offices, and the new “Co-Founder’s Conference Room” as well as a Ph.D. Seminar Room. “We are excited about the opportunities the relocation of the Seminary will bring,” said Dr. David Hirschman, Associate Dean for the Seminary, “We will have the opportunity to craft a 21st century expression of what Liberty’s Seminary is and does.”

On March 9, the Seminary held a Q&A with Dr. Towns (Dean of the Seminary), Dr. Ron Hawkins (Vice Provost), and the students. Dr. Hawkins addressed the students, encouraging them in this time of change. “Every time we go through change, it gets better,” he said, as he reflected on his

many years at Liberty University. Dr. Towns also addressed the students. Showing of the construction, students had the opportunity to ask questions of Dr. Towns and Dr. Hirschman as they prepared for this big change.

“We will have nearly 100% more space. This will allow us to create a unique community for our Seminary students and allow us to continue to expand,” said Dr. Hirschman. With this new location, students will have new ministry venues with more influence and outreach in the community.

Page 7: Graduation Edition

“The Lord has given us the opportunity to use an historic building, the birth place of Liberty University. As such, it has great value,” Dr. Hirschman said. The orginial Thomas Road campus has both an auditorium and the original Pate Chapel, which will serve as the new homiletics labs. This will provide the students with the opportunity to perfect their preaching in both a large and medium sized setting. This will also allow the Seminary to bring in outside conferences in for the students to attend. One other major bonus to this new campus is plenty of parking! Seminary students were told jokingly that they could park side-ways if they wanted.

Some changes and renovations will be made in the Religion Hall to prepare for the Center for Worship. Some rooms and offices

will be made sound proof to be used as practice rooms, a Mac lab will be set up, and offices moved around to accommodate the faculty and staff for the Center for Worship. David’s Place, the current home of the Center for Worship, will be demolished this semester to make room for expansions on the athletic complex.

No waiting for a parking spot!!

Liberty Seminary Student finds Ways to give back

March 30, 2012 : By BJ Williams/Liberty University News Service

Serving others and sharing the gospel has become a staple of the culture at Liberty University. Every year, many students travel abroad doing missions work, while others strive to make a difference right here in the U.S. and at home in Lynchburg, Va.

Andrew Cheatham, a master’s student at Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (LBTS), has adopted that principle as part of his regular activity as a student. He oversees Liberty’s CampusSERVE, which is a group that meets every Saturday to perform service projects. One of the group’s recent projects included helping a local family clean their home. The project was so extensive that it gained local media attention (view a report from WSET ABC13 here).

Cheatham was also among a group of more than 300 Seminary and undergraduate students who went to New York in September with the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) Disaster Relief group, helping communities recover after a series of massive floods.

They performed “muck outs” where they went into houses and cleaned out toxic mud, tore out walls and cleaned up in some very hazardous situations, and as a result they gained opportunities to share the gospel with many of the homeowners who were extremely grateful for their work.

Cheatham described the experience as “overwhelming” when he saw not only the level of destruction that was caused by the floods, but also the level of desperation from the residents.

It was the first time the Southern Baptist Convention National Disaster Relief organization had called on a group of college students to help. The organization is the third largest disaster relief effort, next to the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross.

The Liberty students’ work did not go unnoticed as the group called Liberty again in February to ask for two student volunteers who could help train other college students in cleanup efforts in the aftermath of tornadoes that ripped through Kentucky earlier this year.

“Andrew was the first person I thought about,” said Dr. David Wheeler, Director of Liberty’s Center for Ministry Training, upon receiving the call for help.

Wheeler described Cheatham as an “amazing young man” who is “willing to do whatever it takes to see people get saved.”

Cheatham joined fellow seminary student Reuben John, who has also done relief work in New York, and the two spent their spring break training students from Morehead State University, in Morehead Kentucky.

Cheatham described receiving the call as “extremely humbling” and considered it a high honor to work on the project.

They worked in West Liberty a town that, according to Cheatham, was “wiped out completely.” When he and the students arrived it took their breath away to see how devastated the town was, he said.

Cheatham and John worked with an average of 100 students a day, the majority of which came through the Baptist student ministry at the Morehead State campus, about 2.5 hours from Louisville.

Cheatham was also the first person Wheeler hired when he became the director for the center, asking him to head up not only CampusSERVE, but also the LBTS Block Party ministry and to help with other public outreach opportunities at the university.

According to Lew Weider, director for the Center for Christian/Community Service, Liberty students contributed almost 300,000 hours of service in Lynchburg and surrounding communities in 2011.
