EditorialGraduation is an important occasion, the culmination of all your hard work during your time at Makerere University Business School It marks the point at which you leave us to make your way in the world.Graduation is a proud day for you, your family and your friends. It’s a chance to celebrate all that you have achieved throughout your university career and to look back at the years you have spent with MUBS.

To the graduates, at such an exciting and significant moment in your young lives, we would like to say, Congratulations. You made it. Just for today, put aside your concerns about tuition loans and job searches. Worry about those things tomorrow. For today, enjoy this feeling of accomplishment. You have earned it. Take a moment to think of people , parents, relatives, friends, who have played a role in getting you to this point, endeavour to thank them all.As you move on to the next phase of your life, there are two things you must hold onto and never lose: your curiosity and your imagination. These two symbiotic traits are the necessary fuel for a creative mind. People who lose them at your age become very dull very quickly; the ones who lose them at our age seem much older than they actually are.

Your curiosity is what ensures that you will keep learning long after you leave MUBS. Education is a lifelong process, and it is surely not limited to what happens in a classroom. Some people, when presented with something new, shrug their shoulders and go, “Meh.” Others take a closer look and go, “Hmmmmm …” Always be that second kind of person. Always ask questions that begin with “why” and “how.”Your imagination is what allows you to build upon

your curiosity and to put your newfound knowledge to use. Never limit the scope of your vision to that which you have already seen. Picture what you haven’t seen, or even what doesn’t exist. Think conceptually and then strive to make it real. You are beginning a new phase of your life. The only limits are those you impose on yourself.Erinah Najjingo

MUBS 11th Graduation

May 27, 2016

Chancellor’s SpeechIt is a pleasure for me to be here at the 11th MUBS Graduation Ceremony. I would like to thank Makerere University Business School Council and Management for inviting me to preside over this ceremony. When I was invited, I was not sure what this meant; because we had already had a graduation ceremony in Makerere University in January this year. This is now my second time presiding over such an event and it enables me to learn the affairs of Universities and will give me the opportunity to serve as Chancellor better.

On these occasions we normally take time to advise the granduands on what they need to do when they leave the University. I believe that they are not short of advice, none the less, I would like to congratulate you on this achievement on your individual lives. I would also like to congratulate Makerere University Business School, Council, Management and staff on this achievement. Graduations are the evidence of what has been going on in the University; you are now showing results of your effort. I would like to thank you for the job well done, but I must also thank the students who agreed to study.

Universities are centres of knowledge, they are places where knowledge is created and also dispensed. Outsiders look at Universities with a lot of expectations, knowing that in these institutions, there are people who are knowledgeable and who are supposed to be the cream of Society. The public expects only good things from these Institutions. The public has respect for the teachers everywhere and expects that the students should also learn from their teachers. We therefore look at you in high regards and as said, expect good things from yourselves.

Has MUBS measured to this expectation? From the reports I have heard, you have indeed measured to this. I have a report of excellent

Prof. Ezra SurumaChancellor Makerere University

students; I must thank the students for the high discipline. Whenever we hear of unrest among University students, we know that MUBS students are not part of it. This is a very good tradition and I encourage you to go on with it.

I have been impressed by the number of PhDs Makerere University Business School has got in the last few years, especially the women PhDs. I congratulate you on this. A PhD under normal circumstances is the minimum qualification a lecturer should have in a University. However, as a poor country, we have not had the money to achieve this. It is pleasing to learn that MUBS is making all the effort, more important that this effort is not primarily donor driven. A lot of our PhDs are donor funded and as a result, the donors decide the area of the research.

The Principal in his speech mentioned the infrastructure as a major constraint. This is true; most of our Universities suffer from poor infrastructure. They do not also have enough computers besides enough lecturers. These are key areas to address. I noted that Makerere University Business School like any other Universities has new buildings coming up funded by loans from African Development Bank (ADB). I believe there is need for a comprehensive assessment of what

these needs are so that we can plan for them in a better manner.

I think we need to pose the process of starting new universities to equip the existing ones. These are possible areas I will be advising Government into. I have already learnt that there are challenges with research funding, books and other areas I have mentioned. In my term as Chancellor, I will ague Government to look into them. Having been in a University at one stage, I know that research is very important. It is sad to learn that research is not funded

in the university, again this gives me work to do as part of my agenda in improving the universities in the country but of course more specifically Makerere University and its associated Institutions like Makerere University Business School where I am the Chancellor.

I join the Principal and Chairman MUBS Council in thanking the students, parents/ guardians, Government and the general public in making this graduation possible.

I urge Government to continue improving salaries of Professors and the entire University staff. I also urge Government to examine the needs of all public Institutions and plan to address them.

I urge the lecturers to look for research funds and to be relevant to the country’s needs. I urge our fresh granduands to go and be useful to the country.

Congratulations once again! I wish you the best in the years ahead and I hope that you will, with your education. Be useful citizens of this country.

MUBS 11th Graduation

May 27, 2016

Message from Council ChairmanOn behalf of the School Council, let me welcome you all to Makerere University Business School, and particularly to this, the 11th Graduation ceremony. Like any institution which seeks to proudly display its best products, today MUBS is presenting to the nation and the world, young men and women who have earned the right to read and do all that relates to the academic achievements which will be bestowed on them by our Chancellor today. It is a moment to savor and feel proud about. On behalf of the Council and the School community, I congratulate you.

For you the graduands, it is also a time for reflection; reflection not only about the future but even more importantly regarding the sacrifice your parents, guardians, relatives and friends have made to see you through the years you have been at this fine institution. Let us all spare a moment and thought to thank them for their sacrifice and patience. Many of them are here to-day to bear witness as you receive your academic credentials and are conferred with your respective awards. Your consistent hard work throughout your stay at MUBS has indeed come to fruition today. You should therefore be deservedly happy for your success. Without taking away the feeling of happiness which you richly deserve, let me add that the achievement we celebrate with you today is but only the beginning. As you journey in pursuit of your goals; your dreams; you should always look back and acknowledge the firm foundation which your lecturers and those responsible for imparting knowledge to you have laid to enable you be the best you can be in your respective disciplines. So, always remember your alma mater. Challenges will face you. Moments of triumph will be intermingled with situations of failure and hopelessness; but remember that success and failure are both critical components of the learning curve. Strive to maintain your course and never lose sight of your goals.

Mr. Chancellor Sir, Ladies and Gentlemen, as Chairman of Council, my term of office ends in September this year. I feel honored and privileged to preside over the Board of such an esteemed institution. Let me take this opportunity to thank my fellow Council Members for the support they have given me during this term of office. Talent abounds in the Council; I am convinced that working as a team, we have assisted the School to advance its core objectives of teaching and research, programmes and obligations to our great nation. MUBS has over the years contributed immensely to the development of our nation by providing knowledge to people; and developing solutions to deal

with the many challenges of development we face as a nation.

Mr. Chancellor, Ladies and Gentlemen, MUBS by its size, in the number of academic staff at all levels, research activities, student population, and physical facilities is a model for other public institutions in Uganda, the region and, indeed should now be up there among the world’s best. The challenge we have set ourselves in this respect, is to move MUBS towards becoming “The Benchmark for Business and Management in the Region”.

In an endeavor to attain the aforementioned goals, MUBS currently has in place a five year Strategic Plan. MUBS is committed towards meeting the targets as spelt out in its Strategic Plan. The Council and I as Chairman assume the responsibility of seeing to it that these targets are met as we move towards our objective. MUBS will endeavor to keep up the good work, as it is only by so doing that we shall really achieve the world-class status that we strive for. Congratulations to all those who have made this possible; but much remains to be done.

Other developments, such as the competitive filling of top Management positions, presence of a Service Charter, Appraisal exercises, introduction of competitive and market driven courses, will also definitely propel us towards the status we seek. Council on its part, will offer leadership, direction, advice and support to the Management to enable it realize its goals.

Among the activities of the School is carrying out research. In addition to the core business, other activities include the dissemination of information, as well as to store information

“ MUBS has the capacity to produce the highest number of

applicable research findings when benchmarked against a number of

the other universities in our country. “

for use by future generations. Let me comment on the issue of Research. Upon my appointment as Chairman of Council, I immediately embarked on a tour of the various campuses of the MUBS. It goes without saying that the School is richly endowed with vast resources, both physical and human.

MUBS has the capacity to produce the highest number of applicable research findings when benchmarked against a number of the other universities in our country. Indeed, I noted that quite a number of research activities are currently underway. My wish and that of the Council is that these researches should be completed as scheduled, and their application be implemented in the quickest time possible. In this way we shall give back to society and continue to entrench our relevancy and existence as one of the leading business schools in Africa.

Mr. Chancellor, one of the major challenges facing MUBS today is that of finances. MUBS runs the highest number of business courses which has attracted increased numbers of students. This requires provision of adequate funds to enable it manage its activities and programmes. However, due to competing social and economic needs for the Government’s purse, adequate funds are not always available to meet and fund the School’s activities. Every financial year MUBS experiences shortfalls despite Government contribution. The school must generate sufficient cash flow to cover this gap. However, despite its best efforts, finances still remain a major challenge to the school. We thank the government for increasing its contribution towards the wage bill during FY 2015/16 and FY 2016/17.

This is testimony of government’s commitment to provide quality education in public institutions. We shall continue lobbying for government to ease the burden of the non-wage bill in the same regard.

Ladies and Gentlemen, today is a day for the graduands; their proud parents, relatives, guardians and friends. But before concluding my remarks, let me thank the Government for its continued support to the university, to you Mr. Chancellor for your guidance and support, to the members of the Council, the Principal and his team, the students and the MUBS community. Finally to the graduands; however you chose to pursue your goals, your dreams may successfully be yours. Thank you very much. God bless you all.

MUBS 11th Graduation

May 27, 2016

Principal’s Speech

We come to another ceremony giving accountability for what has been entrusted to us by the public. We are now graduating

1,314 number of students in different Diploma and certificate programmes. In January we graduated 3611 undergraduates and 240 graduate students. We continue to thank the students who choose MUBS as their institution of choice. We also thank the parents especially of the privately sponsored students, who support their children in our programmes. We must also thank Government who underwrites the entire School activities. Congratulations to the students, the parents and of course the entire staff of Makerere University Business School on this achievement.

This graduation is a special one as we welcome Prof. Ezra Suruma, the new chancellor of Makerere University. Congratulations on your appointment and we welcome you to MUBS. It is also an occasion for us to express our gratitude to the former Chancellor, Prof. Mondo

Kagonyera who has ably steered the University and oversaw the tremendous achievements over the years. We congratulate you on the successful completion of your term.

This year has had some special activities that we need to report. We thank Government who secured funds from the African Development Bank (ADB). We have a new building that is about to be completed to house the Faculty of Computing and management Science. In the same breath, we continue to thank Government for the support we will soon receive for construction of the Business Incubator. These buildings will go a long way in improving the landscape and skyline of the School. I must state at this point that while this goes on, the School still needs more modern facilities to be able to ably benchmark not only with our neighbouring countries, but also across the world.

This is something we have continued to ask and we will

Prof. Waswa Balunywa- Principal, MUBS

continue to put across as something that should be considered by Government. We have been able to make some major repairs on some of our buildings and more specifically we are addressing the challenge of asbestos roofs in the School.

This is a special year. We have been able to graduate several PhDs, three of whom are women. But not only have we been able to graduate several people, we registered the largest number of PhDs so far in different programmes both in the country and abroad. We would like to thank Government and African Development Bank, (ADB) who have made this possible. We also wish to thank our School Council who with their guidance we have been able to put over thirty (30) people in the different PhD programmes I have mentioned. We will continue to thank Prof. John Munene, Prof. Augustine Ahiauzu and Prof. Peter Rosa for the tremendous work they have done in taking off and sustaining our PhD programme. Our PhD programme is giving us strength to continue to offer excellent programmes to the public. I must complement my colleagues, the Deans of Faculties and other members of Management who have kept the programme going.

Collaborations

We will continue to grow our international programmes. Our relationship with Drake University continues to grow. For the 5th year, we have Drake students coming to Uganda who are in our midst this morning. We thank the President of Drake University, the outgoing Vice Provost for International Programmes, Dr. Christa Olson, the Professors, Deb Bishop, Tom Root and Jimmy Senteza among others who have supported the programme and made it possible over the years.

Our relationship with

“ The School still needs

more modern facilities to

only with our neighbouring countries, but

also across the world.

MUBS 11th Graduation

May 27, 2016

Principal’s SpeechC o p e n h a g e n Business School continues to be strengthened and we hope to soon take students to Denmark like we are taking to Drake University. Thanks to Southern University in Louisiana, our Guild Officials continue to undertake benchmark visits and this year they hosted the outgoing Guild President, H.E Don Patrick Bugingo.

Our relationship with ICT University continues to be strengthened. We have several students graduating at this occasion with their Masters degree and we have a number of staff pursuing their PhDs with ICTU. ICTU continues to support our online learning platform and programmes as we benchmark with them on the best practices of running such programmes. With support from them, in the coming year if we get the necessary approvals, we plan to roll out an online MBA programme besides others.

Our relationship with Syracuse University also continues to be strengthened as we run conferences together and plan to have an online journal published in conjunction with the Whitman School of Management in Syracuse University, New York. We continue to relate to the Commonwealth Association of Polytechnics in Africa where we have been able to support the development of entrepreneurship in most of the member institutions.

We work with the University of Nairobi and the University of Dar es Salaam in running the Operations Research

Society of East Africa ( ARSEA). We soon expect a PhD programme to be hosted by the University of Dar es Salaam to be started to take care of staff development in Operations Research for the three universities. We also initiated cooperations with Mt. Kenya University, which is a unique low cost cooperation that will give us new experiences.

We also want to thank the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University Prof. Dumba Ssentamu for his support.

Research

This year, there has been a slow down on research activities due to financial constraints. The research budget was cut and faculties did not receive money for research this year, We expect that in the coming year, funding of research will be resumed. The funding challenges have led to merging of our conferences to one annual event.

Staffing issues

I have already made reference to the staff development programme, mainly our PhD programme. This has been our main focus, however we continue to train our staff in how to teach, training a large number as Teaching Assistants as we prepare for the future. In the last one year, government enhanced salaries of academic staff and is going to do so again this year. Government also plans to enhance salaries of administrative staff. This is ongoing. This increment in salary is welcome

and has created some degree of equality among public institutions. We would like to thank government for this gesture. We hope that Government will continue to enhance these salaries to the levels it has promised.

The future

The legal status of MUBS has continued to hold us back. In recent months there has been information from the Ministry of Education Science, Technology and Sports that has led us to believe that there will be a change in the legal status of MUBS. As of now, we don't know what that is. Our desire has been to give us the independence that we require so as to enable the institution to have better plans. Among the plans MUBS has are increasing access to education at a reasonable price, introducing more relevant programmes that are geared towards entrepreneurship, improving the training of entrepreneurship educators, improving the performance of students, enabling students have better access to learning materials and strengthening of the teaching capacity.

The School plans to improve infrastructure development and it has plans to build additional lecture halls that will meet the requirements of additional lecture rooms.

Commencement Speaker

I would like to thank our past commencement speakers. One of them is with us, Mr. Patrick Bitature, who was also identified for an award today. I am indeed proud of you and congratulations

MUBS 11th Graduation

May 27, 2016

Message from Deputy PrincipalTo our graduands

Congratulations to all of you for successfully completing your studies. This graduation ceremony is a major milestone in your scholarly life. Each one of you has a story to tell, as to how the journey has been to reach this moment. You should be proud that you have finally reached the epitome of your academic struggle. Simple and cheap as the gown you are putting on may appear, it is a symbol of hard work in academics.

As MUBS, we are confident that you have acquired relevant knowledge to enable you survive outside school. Since you have been excellent students, we believe you will equally be excellent citizens. We are releasing you into the world of work. If you work hard, you will create jobs, after all the jobs you seek

were created by some hard working person. As you work, please endeavor to talk about MUBS and its contribution to your life. We expect you to remain proud and faithful to your alma mater.

As citizens with knowledge in business, you should be able to seize new opportunities and nurture ideas that will address pressing business challenges. Leave a trail wherever you pass, even when there seems to be no path! My message and prayer is that you determine to remain alive, free from all that may endanger your lives.

We wish that God’s blessings and God’s grace follow you and that you will be successful in your attempts.

Dr. Moses Muhwezi

Deputy Principal

on this achievement.

For our commencement speaker this year, I feel even more proud, having been my student and even staff for a short while at MUBS; it is pleasing to know that you accepted to be our commencement speaker this year. I have seen you rise in various positions you have worked into and I have proudly said, “that is my kind of guy” because your record has spoken for you. You have been an excellent performer and today MUBS is proud to have you as a commencement speaker. Congratulations! And thank you for accepting

The Graduands

Financial constraints continue to prevent us from moving to ideal conditions we want. There is constrained infrastructure development especially buildings and ICT equipment, they also hinder us from research, which is a core activity of every University. There is no need to lament over about them continuously because we know that even government is constrained in its budget.

We however, call for periodic review of all University activities by Government to identify key constraints and address them in the best way possible.

This is your day, the day to make merry, to end one phase in life, but also a day to ponder on where you are going in future. You have the vision of your future. Do you know how to get there?! If you do not know, any road you take, will take you there. Look into your future and see what you think is possible, get rid

of your fears and go for it. Remember you will continue to be identified with MUBS. Therefore continue to project the MUBS image well by being different from others. There is a lot of advice from the public, your parents, your friends and your lecturers. Listen well to their advice, take meaning of the words, they will be very important to your future.

Allow me to thank our Chancellor, our Chairman and members of Council, Management and staff of Makerere University Business School, students, the Republic of the Government of Uganda, for making this possible.

I wish you the best in your years ahead and I thank the graduation committee who has put in all the effort to have this wonderful event.

It takes courage and planning to commence a journey in life. Once initiated, commitment, tact and focus take center stage for the journey to progress as planned and for you to arrive at the destination. A year or two ago, you started a major journey in your life; a journey that culminates into this pleasant and joyous congregation which you are part of. Your presence at this year’s graduation ceremony is testimony to the fact that you were steadfast in your

unwavering commitment to pursue academic growth. You couldn’t have made a better choice than to do this in MUBS where our passion is to enable the future of our clients. We believe that we have done our part in enabling your future through this occasion.

Like all journeys, there are bound to be obstacles along the way, some seemingly insurmountable. Taking a look around, you will notice that not all your colleagues with whom you started this journey are here. While

we sympathize with those who may not have made it due to unfavourable circumstances beyond their control, we are cognizant of the fact that there are those who had it within their means to achieve your feat but lost track and focus. Rt Hon. Apolo Robin Nsibambi

He was the first non-Head-of-State to be the Chancellor of Makerere University, from October 2003 to October 2007. He Presided over the 3rd MUBS graduation ceremony in 2005. In his graduation speech, Nsabambi urged Makerere University and MUBS to unite. He instructed the education minister to amend the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 in order to address the dispute between Makerere

University and MUBS.

He also urged the heads of the two institutions to amicably resolve the matter and ensure that students do not become victims of the dispute. He awarded diplomas and certificates to 1,399 students who qualified in different disciplines. There have been disagreements between the two institutions, “I must appeal to the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University and the Principal MUBS to ensure that students do not become victims of the misunderstandings between the two institutions.” The former Premier also warned students against riots. He urged Students to use organs of the university where they are represented to sort out their grievances. “Students who indulge in acts of hooliganism in universities and tertiary institutions like MUBS will be stiffly punished” he said.

The President presided over the first MUBS Graduation ceremony in June 2001. This put to rest the anxiety of thousands of students of the former National College of Business Studies, ( NCBS) and other colleges of Commerce who

could not graduate following the merger of the Former NCBS and then Faculty of Commerce . the graduation saw 3000 students receive their awards.

During his term as Chancellor, President Museveni initiated the affirmative action policy, which awards 1.5 points to female applicants. This policy

has increased female admissions to University from 25% in 1990/91 to the current 40% in most Universities programmes. He was also instrumental in setting up the Department of Women and Gender Studies. This support resulted in Makerere University hosting the World Congress of Women in 2004.

He is the second non-Head-of-State to head Makerere University, Prof Kagonyera was first appointed Chancellor by the President on the recommendation of the Makerere University Council on 23rd October 2007- 2011, and reappointed for second term in 2012- 2015. During his tenure in office, Prof. Kagonyera has advocated for MUBS’ independence and increasing funding for research activities in all public universities. He has always asked

government to grant MUBS an independent status, saying the institution has matured and can move on independently. Prof Kagonyera said the longer it takes to grant MUBS its independence denies the institution its rightful place among similar institutions. “To say MUBS is a tertiary institution, similar to these colleges on the streets in Kampala is to belittle the effort of the great minds that have made this institution what it is,” Prof Kagonyera noted. “It is time that government took a bold decision to make this institution an independent university,” he added. He said if the government cannot automatically make MUBS a university, then it should amend the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 to allow it be accommodated as an independent degree awarding institution.

He is the third non-head-of-State to be appointed Chancellor of Makerere University. He will be presiding over the MUBS 11th graduation Ceremony on may 27, 2016 at the MUBS’ main campus in Nakawa. 1,400 students will be awarded diplomas, postgraduate diplomas and certificates in various disciplines. The graduates include the Luizira inmates.

During his maiden visit to

MUBS on April 28, 2016, Prof. Suruma pledged to work closely with the Business School. Responding to the issue of MUBS’ independence, Prof. Suruma indicated that this issue can be discussed. He also has challenged Academic Institutions to focus on research and dissemination of knowledge to facilitate service delivery and economic development in the Country. “Research and publication should be a priority of all Universities. This will aid the creation of new knowledge to advance productivity in society. Universities should also focus on producing graduates who are innovative enough to create employment for themselves and for others”, he noted.

Makerere University Vice Chancellors who have attended MUBS Graduation Ceremonies

He was Vice Chancellor Makerere University from 1993- 2004. He succeeded Prof. Senteza Kajubi, who had completed his 2nd tenure in 1993. In 2003, prof. Ssebuwufu noted that with the first Universal Primary Education (UPE) graduates closing in, the university is under pressure to

expand its facilities. He also urged graduands to transform the skills acquired to propel Uganda to a new level of development. “MUBS has equipped you with skills that are on high demand in the work market, therefore it’s critical that you put them to use,” He further urged them to desist from wasting their lives in acts of ‘smoking weed’ and ‘indecent dressing’ which are perceived as fashionable.

Prof. Ssebuwufu is the current chancellor of Kyambogo University, Uganda’s second-largest public university. He was installed as chancellor on 19 February 2014, replacing Eric Tiyo Adriko, who had completed his two term tenure.

He served as Vice Chancellor Makerere University from 2004 - 2009.He is one of the celebrated academic icons Uganda has got. After graduating with a First class

bachelors degree in Mathematics, he joined Makerere University as a Special Assistant in 1970 but he had also served as a tutorial in his 3rd year of his u n d e r g r a d u a t e studies.During his term as Vice Chancellor,

there were c o l l a b o r a t i o n s reached with I n t e r n a t i o n a l Universities and o r g a n i z a t i o n s in various areas reaching out to alumni. Membership.

Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba

Speaking at the 5th MUBS graduation ceremony held at the Nakawa campus on Friday, May, 30th, 2010, the Makerere University v i c e - c h a n c e l l o r , Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, said the two campuses, Makerere University and makerere University Business School agreed to work together for academic excellence. He said a decision was taken by the university senate in a bid to control duplication of courses at the two campuses. “We are training managers, business people and

innovators, MUBS should not be under-estimated in its role to Uganda and the outside world”, he said. B a r y a m u r e e b a commended the quality of PhD students MUBS produces, noting that they excel in the business and other disciplines. Prof. Baryamureeba the current MUBS Chairman Council and he has on several occasions noted that the school has attained reasonable growth. There are enough staff, infrastructure, student numbers and academics which critics were using to stifle its plan for autonomy.MUBS has been adding on more programmes and more disciplines. Currently MUBS is in advanced stages of starting programmes in business and science education to contribute to the training of the much-needed business and science teachers in the country.

Prof. John Ddumba Ssentamu.

Is the current Vice Chancellor of Makerere University. In his speeches at MUBS Graduation ceremonies, Prof. Dumba has appreciated MUBS Council and the School Management for the cordial working relationship with management of Makerere University. “We have a common goal of providing high quality education for the development of our nation. A good working relationship is therefore paramount and I am happy to note that we continue

to enjoy it. Having said that Mr. Chancellor Sir, I wish to re-echo my remarks during the previous two graduation ceremonies regarding our collaboration. There has been limited collaboration between Makerere University Business School and the School of Business in the College of Business and Management Sciences at Makerere University. I believe that our two institutions can benefit greatly from mutual collaboration in teaching, research and supervision. MUBS being the leading business school in the region, it can surely assist the School of Business at Makerere University in a number of ways. Similarly, the School of Business at Makerere University has certain expertise that can be useful to MUBS. Indeed, our two institutions can reinforce each other. I therefore urge all of us to initiate stronger and visible links.

MUBS 11th Graduation

May 27, 2016

On May 31, 2013, renowned entrepreneur Patrick Bitature was the commencement speaker at the MUBS graduation ceremony, he advised the youth on how to succeed in life. “I believe that God created every human being here today with

greatness in mind. Within us all is a deep well of potential. There is a genius in every person; all you have to do is find the key to unlock it… To tap and release that genius in you” he noted

2nd Commencement Speaker 2013

The Chief Executive Officer of Oscar Industries, Mohan Kiwanuka, was the commencement speaker at the 9th MUBS graduation ceremony. He urged the graduands to be hard working and excel at whatever they do. He advised the graduands to use the acquired knowledge to better themselves.

The keynote speaker of the day was the Chief Executive Officer of Oscar Industries, Mohan Kiwanuka, who urged the graduands to be hard working in their work.

3rd Commencement Speaker 2014 4th Commencement Speaker 2015Gen. Caleb Akandwanaho a.k.a Salim Saleh the presidential adviser on military matters delivered a commencement lecture MUBS 10th

graduation ceremony where 1182 were passed out with certificates and diplomas in different courses on 29th May 2015. He presented the lecture on the topic; “Creating employment and wealth through agriculture as a business”.

1st Commencement Speaker 2010Mr. Charles Mbiire, Chairman; MTN Uganda was the inaugural Commencement Speaker at MUBS’ Graduation Ceremonies. He argued students to focus on value creating skills to bring economic and social benefits in the country. “You have to choose a path where you are producers and not consumers of capital. Your contribution to the value-chain of economic growth should be

admired”, he said. Mbire said the education and training the students acquired was meant to add value to the wealth of the country.

This year MUBS is pleased to have Mr. Fabian Kasi to deliver a commencement lecture to the graduands. The theme for this 11th Graduation Ceremony is “Financial Inclusion of Women and youth in the Transformation of Society”.

Mr. Kasi is the Managing Director of Centenary Rural Development Bank. He was

a Board Chairman of the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Uganda and served on the Board of FINCA Uganda and Kampala Club. He is the current Chairman of the Uganda Bankers Association; a member of the Board of Uganda Institute of Bankers, British American Tobacco (U), PAX Insurance and is the Chairman of the Advisory

Board of Microfinance Department of Nkozi University. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, a Masters of Business Administration and is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accounts (FCCA), United Kingdom.

The importance of financial inclusion for women and youth is to increase their access to financing. When women and the youth get funding from financial institutions, they are able to start up businesses and engage in other economic activities that improve their well being and transform the economy in the long run.

Despite significant advances and effort of having gender equality in financial inclusion research shows that, women and youth still lag behind in accessing finances. It is from this background that Mr. Kasi will discuss what needs to be done to close the gender gap.

MUBS’ Graduation Commencement SpeakersMakerere University Business School incorporated the aspect of commencement speakers at its 5th Graduation ceremony in 2010 to inspire the graduands.

Some of those hard nosed achievements are the PhDs the School has graduated not only this year but also over the years. It has been a challenging process and it continues to be. Without much funding and with a lot of sacrifice, MUBS has been able to graduate about five (5) PhDs every year. It should be mentioned that among these are women. This has been a difficult process because these ladies and gentlemen have to sacrifice to be able to secure these degrees under difficult circumstances. With more funding and young staff, we believe the future of this institution is bright.

MUBS 11th Graduation

May 27, 2016

Are you ready for what lies ahead once you stroll across the graduation stage? Will you be able to steer yourself through the job hunt and, ultimately, your first job? Answer these six questions to find out.

Do You Know What You Want? You might think employers will appreciate your “I am willing to do or learn anything” approach to getting a job. However, most employers interpret that as “Iam desperate” or “I have no focus, so I’m just taking a shot at whatever I stumble across.”

2. Do You Have Experience?Employers look for evidence that you have gained experience in your field through internships, part-time jobs, full-time jobs or even volunteering. If you haven’t picked up this type of experience yet, it is a good bet many graduates have and will likely have an edge over you in the entry-level job market.

3. Do You Know Your Chosen Field?Imagine going into an interview and saying, “I love this field and know a lot about it, that is why I want to get into it myself.” The interviewer replies by saying, “Interesting. Tell me what you know.” If you have been relying on that point, you are in trouble. Once you have chosen your field, study it thoroughly so that prospective employers know you understand it.

Research the field’s major players by reading industry publications, visiting industry Web sites, and participating in professional organizations and attending their conferences and seminars.

4. Do You Have a Strong Resume? You may be the best entry-level job candidate the world has ever seen. But if you don’t market yourself effectively on your resume and cover letter, no one will ever know. So make your resume the best it can be. Tailor it to each specific job you pursue, watch out for the most common mistakes and be sure the document looks as good as it reads. Learn how you can put together a decent resume, even as a recent graduate.

5. Can You Back Up the Claims You Make on Your Resume and in Interviews?Employers have met all kinds of candidates, including some who have flat-out lied about their accomplishments. It’s only natural for employers to be a bit skeptical. That’s why you have to effectively support any claims you make on your resume or in interviews with specific examples. Better yet, consider putting together and using a career portfolio to prove your past achievements.

6. Are You Prepared for How Odd the Real World Can Be?At times, the real world can be a very strange place because of people’s diverse personalities, agendas and work styles. For example, decisions that ought to be made based on tangible information and logic are sometimes based on office politics. And your success on the job will depend as much on your people skills as your technical abilities. So be ready to be judged on more than your job-related accomplishments and to judge others on more than theirs. You can minimize your anxiety and maximize your ultimate success by going in with your eyes open and your mind fully prepared for the challenges that await you.

Shonda Rhimes’s 2014 speech at Dartmouth College."Ditch the dream and be a doer, not a dreamer. Whether or not you know what your "passion" might be. The truth is, it doesn't matter. You don't have to know. You just have to keep moving forward. You just have to keep doing something, seizing the next opportunity, staying open to trying something new. It doesn't have to fit your vision of the perfect job or the perfect life. Perfect is boring and dreams are not real."

Robert Krulwich’s 2011 speech to the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism."Think about entrepeneuring, think about NOT waiting for a company to call you up. Think about not giving your heart to a bunch of adults you don’t know. Think about horizontal loyalty. Think about turning to people you already know, who are your friends, or friends of their

friends, and making something that makes sense to you together, that is as beautiful or as true as you can make it. It won't lead to instant success, but the people who stay at it, who stay stubborn, very often win."

George Saunders’s 2013 speech at Syracuse University.“Kindness comes with age. It might be a simple matter of attrition: as we get older, we come to see how useless it is to be selfish — how illogical, really. Don't wait. "Speed it along, Start right now." There's a confusion in each of us, a sickness, really: selfishness, but there's also a cure. So be a good and proactive and even somewhat desperate patient on your own behalf — seek out the most efficacious anti-selfishness medicines, energetically, for the rest of your life."

Stephen Colbert’s 2011 speech at Northwestern University."Whatever your dream is right now, if you don't achieve it, you haven't failed, and you're not some loser. But just as importantly — and this is the part I may not get right and you may not listen to — if you do get your dream, you are not a winner."

Assoc. Prof. Moya MusaDean,

Faculty of Computing and Management Science

Warm greetings and I salute you, the graduating groups of 2016.

This is indeed a blissful occasion for all and we, in the Faculty, would like to recognize, and most importantly, m e m o r i a l i z e

with you, your accomplishment and success.

Graduation is a time to commemorate, an exciting time that comes after years of colossal hard work at MUBS, with understandably, thorny but gainful sacrifices. Congratulations! The FOC is exceedingly proud to have contributed to your education achievement. Certainly, both the academic and administrative staff in the faculty have served you excellently and sufficiently prepared you to face the challenges in the world of employment.

The years you have spent in MUBS have prepared you well and now you are qualified business graduates on high demand. My

profound advice to you is to hold yourself in self esteem; and as expected, exhibit the highest level of integrity which is in short supply in the world today. Employers are going to begin entrusting you with their resources in comprehensive conjecture that you will make their business most successful and offer profitable contributions to their investments. Work is a calling, a sacrifice and a selfless contribution to society. Will you be able to meet these expectations? What will your contribution be? Will you lead to prosperity or will you sink the business down the trench?

Today, as you temporarily end your role as MUBS students, you take up another very imperative role as MUBS alumni. In this new role, I urge you to earnestly use your talents to spread the good word and work of this great MUBS. Please keep in touch with MUBS, both as your almatar and more potently, as your first choice in case your make a decision of advancing your skills further. We stand ready to serve and will tailor our products to meet your academic and career needs. But to remain relevant, we

will fortify you with short courses and career-specific professional programmes. Please strive for success and excellence in all that you do. This means that you should approach every assignment with passion and be prepared to persist through failure.

To the parents and guardians, I say thank you for the immortal sacrifices you invested in these intellects. MUBS, Uganda and the world will forever praise you for this investment. But let these efforts not end here! This achievement should propel you to think and further support these children by seizing any opportunity that advance them to the next level and make Uganda a better country.

God Bless you all and good celebrations!

MUBS has an Economic Forum which is a think tank to discuss economic issues and experts are identified to cause a discussion on them. This specific forum held on May 5, 2016 at Hotel Protea was about the land question, food security and economic transformation in Uganda. The attendance was high powered including Members of Parliament. The Forum was sponsored by Friedrich Ebert Foundation, a German NGO that supports development in developing countries. The keynote speakers included Robert Kirunda, a young rising star that is sending ripples in matters concerning land, Counsel John Kigula, a senior lecturer in the school of Law and consultant, Rt Hon. Ogenga Latigo, Former Leader of Opposition and the morning session was chaired by Hon Mathias Kasamba, MP Kakuuto.

The MUBS Economic Forum is directed by Mr Ramadhan Ggoobi, a Lecturer in the Department of Finance, in the Faculty of Commerce. In his welcome remarks, Prof. Waswa Balunywa noted that Land in Uganda has no uniform pattern of ownership and the law governing land varies from place to place. There is Mailo land which is typical in Buganda, freehold, leasehold and communal or clan land. There is also government owned land. He said the Mailo land which is in Buganda is one of the biggest sources of confusion in the country. This was introduced by the British to create a landed class in the country as a basis of creating a middle class. Land in Buganda was divided into various square miles and given to those Kabakas people who had been identified as the ones who would form the basis of the middle class in the country. On this divided land, there were people who owned the land as clan land, they were convinced that nobody would send them away and as a result, they were requested to pay a token (busuulu) rental to the supposedly title holder. The confusion now is since the land was titled, the title owner became the owner of the land legally and the clan owners became bibanja holders. It is difficult especially outside Kampala to send away a kibanja holder because historically he

is owner of the land. The various laws have attempted to safeguard this individual, family or clan. This has led to laws that protect ownership of land rather than usage. The land question has continued to become more complicated, for instance foreigners are not

supposed to own land in Uganda especially freehold or Mailo land but it is alleged that a large number of them own it through proxies and it is also reported that they corruptly get the land registered in their names. Where land is owned by government, it is alleged that it was corruptly acquired by government officials and today the same people are selling it to foreigners. This was an issue raised by the participants at the Economic Forum.

In the developed countries, a small percentage of the population about 1-3 percent are in agriculture, this has enabled mass production and the benefits associated with it. Primarily low cost production, in Uganda 80% of the people are in rural areas and involved in agricultural production in small unproductive farms. In some of the areas which are densely populated, families don’t own more than 2 acres of land, this is a prescription for poverty, and these peasant farmers cannot increase production, because they have no land and cannot increase productivity because of the unscientific method of production. Social economic transformation will require a bold decision. A land reform that will free land for productive agricultural use. However, the dilemma is, what do you do to a growing poor population? You cannot move it to urban areas because they have no incomes and no jobs there. If you look at this problem from the traditional perspective of the usual land reform of movement of people to urban areas, you will not achieve much There is need for new thinking. This Forum was only appropriate. What do we do to solve the land question in Uganda? But Uganda’s challenges are not only the land question, there is the Buganda question, the Bunyoro question, the Karamoja queston and increasingly with the massive poverty in Busoga, the Busoga question, possibly there are others.

The MUBS Entrepreneurship Centre Breakfast Meetings

MUBS Out- Reach Centres

Are you an Entrepreneur?, Do you need to learn from other entrepreneurs? Come and attend the Entrepreneurship Centre breakfast meeting. The MUBS Entrepreneurship Centre holds monthly breakfast

meetings for entrepreneurs. The Centre used to work with the Bid Network a Netherlands organization which arranged breakfast meetings which bring together entrepreneurs to learn from one another, also receive business counselling from experts. This is a network that is intended to foster the development of Entrepreneurs by bringing practicing entrepreneurs together discussing challenges that they face and learning from one another. These meetings are being held every second Tuesday of the month.

In the last one year with the help from ICT University, Cameroon, MUBS has improved its e-learning capacity. It has also been supported by the Commonwealth of Learning. Various staff have been trained in using e-learning, deans of faculties were sensitized about the project and over thirty, 30 members of academic staff were trained in using the programme. The African Development Bank (ADB) has also added to the effort and besides the equipment, it is supporting the e-learning training for the champions in the

various departments. The school now uses the plat form to teach students in the regional campuses of Aura, Jinja, Mbarara and Mbale from one centre in Kampala. It is expected that the coming academic year new programmes will be brought on board. This has advantages in meeting travel costs along with risks associated with it and having one staff teaching all the students on the same programme.Mr. John Kase a lecturer in the department of business computing has been the main champion of the programme.

The MUBS Annual Youth Camp

MUBS Outreach Centres which include theLeadership, Entrepreneurship, Career Guidance and ICT Centres annually organize the Youth Camp that is intended to bring the youth together to share, learn and network. The common saying is that the future belongs to the youth. That is not correct. The youth’s future is today. It is the young people driving the change today especially through technology, social entrepreneurship among others. The youth therefore need to discover themselves and be empowered to live in a meaningful life and secure their future. The youth Camp combines a series of activities which include, sharing experiences, lectures, networking, physical fitness and networking centres.

Annually the MUBS Career Guidance Centre organizes the Job and Career fair, intended to create awareness amongst students of the different job opportunities and career choices in the country. Under the theme “Your Talent and your Network is your Net worth” The event was organized in partnership with the Red pepper Publications Limited again, ICPAU, Graduate Mentorship Programme Africa, Pepsi Cola, NBS TV, Royalway Media, Kimberly Ryan and AISEC Uganda. The key note speakers including the IGP, Gen Kale Kayihura, Registrar General, Mr.Twebaze Bemanya, Human Resources Director, Airtel Uganda Mrs. Flavia N. Lwanga among others. Gen. Kale Kayihura presented on the role of police in the socio economic transformation of a country and

emphasized the need for young people to guard jealously the peace the country is enjoying today. The Registrar General informed the students about the role and benefits of business formalisation and the different services offered by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau. The students were also advised on what it takes to hook the job by Mrs Lwanga and many more expositions

from various organisationsMeanwhile the MUBS Principal Prof. Waswa Balunywa appealed to government to invest more in

technical and vocational Institutions to solve the problem of unemployment in the country.“Today there is a large number of graduates without jobs and the problem is escalating. This is on top of the huge number of unemployed who will never make it to the university. There is of course a problem with our educational system. We have almost 300, 000 people in universities and tertiary institutions while there are only 70,000 in the different technical and vocational institutions. This is partly the reason why there is massive graduate unemployment. Our educational system allows young people to simply go into programmes without knowing what they are and what the student will do when he or she graduates”.

Every year the MUBS Leadership Centre organizes the women mentoring training programe targeting mainly MUBS students and staff. This year the training was held on March 30, 2016 at the Leadership Centre premises at MUBS Annex Bugoolobi. The programme is intended to make MUBS students and staff different and competitive from others and also to prepare them for leadership positions. Society has marginalized women and yet research indicates that empowering women has greater advantages to society. While women are emotional, they are said to be better managers and leaders. The evolution of marginalization of women can be traced from biblical times of creation of Adam and Eve underscored by the physical differences of women and men and biological differences that make women bear and look after children. The programme takes place over a period of 3 to 6 months.

Collaborations

A group of students from Makerere University Business School visited Drake University under the student exchange programme. The team that was led by the Deputy Principal, Dr. Moses Muhwezi, had an opportunity

to explore the challenges and achievements USA has had in terms of development, meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Dr. Muhwezi appreciated Drake University for sustaining the collaboration and also hosting and training the MUBS students in the areas of development, Management and business. “We at MUBS are appreciative of all the effort that Drake University has put into this collaboration and like before, we are still willing to continue with this collaboration,” said Dr. Muhwezi.

Drake’s partnership with MUBS began in 2007 when Associate Professor of Finance Jimmy Senteza organized Drake’s first travel seminar in Uganda. The seminar brought together faculty and students from Drake and MUBS to explore sustainable development and promote responsible global citizenship. The course has proven to be so popular that it’s been offered every year since 2007.

According to the Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research Dr. Muhammed Ngoma, the MOU will facilitate both parties in establishing educational cooperation which include the exchange of staff and students, as well as exchange in expertise and research. He said MUBS is ready for cooperation with USM, in view of the huge market that is available in the African continent and the strategic location of Uganda for such ventures.“With such means, USM would be able to ‘transport’ the expertise from Malaysia, at a time when Uganda and Africa are in the midst of developing its education sector,

to have more and better e d u c a t e d s k i l l e d w o r k f o r c e for the development of the African c o u n t r i e s , e s p e c i a l l y Uganda,” said Dr. Ngoma. USM and MUBS also hope to explore possibilities for cooperation in offering joint degrees for higher education.
