I enjoyed the experience of attending this conference; New Innovations Inc. is a medical education management suite that specializes in integrated software solutions for medical education programs at schools, hospitals and private practices across the world. The staff was professional and friendly, and the knowledge gained at the conference will assist in my future coordinator responsibilities. I would recommend coordinators take time to attend the next session, as I feel I’ve been given the right amount of training to assist the directors and future residents / fellows. - Faith Stoutamire

Congratulations to Dr. Joan Meek on winning the 2015 Clerkship Director of the Year award from the students at the Orlando campus. The award was presented by stu-dents during their graduation dinner held in May. This was a well-deserved recognition for Dr. Meek’s outstanding teaching and mentoring of medical students. We are also extremely pleased to have her as part of GME.

Dr. Joan Younger Meek

Dr. Wilhelmine Wiese-Rometsch

This issue of Residency Review recognizes the accomplishments of the College of Medicine GME

sponsored residency programs and the newest graduates of those programs. Congratulations to each of these new Seminole alumni on the successful completion of their residency or fel-lowship training with the College of Medicine. We wish them the best as they begin the next phase of their ca-reers. Connie Donohoe, our GME pro-gram manager, redesigned our residen-cy certificates and covers for this year’s graduates. The senior leadership of the College of Medicine and our GME of-fice participated in the meaningful cel-ebrations held by the clinical partner institutions to honor the new gradu-ates and to recognize faculty who have shown distinguished service. Sarasota Memorial Hospital has partnered with the Florida State University College of Medicine to de-velop a residency program in internal medicine. The affiliation agreement was signed this past March, and Dr. Wilhelmine Wiese-Rometsch was re-cruited as the inaugural program direc-tor. Dr. Wiese-Rometsch completed

internal medicine residency at East Carolina Univer-sity. She was lat-er named as the program director at Wayne State University from 2001-2008. She is currently an associate profes-

sor of internal medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. She also serves as the corporate vice president of academic affairs and Des-ignated Institutional Official at Detroit

Medical Center. Dr. Wiese-Rometsch will join the College of Medicine on Sept. 21. The general surgery program at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare received notification of initial accredi-tation in June. Dr. Wade Douglas, program director, and Lilly Lewis, pro-gram coordinator, worked diligently to achieve this outcome. The program will begin recruitment for their first group of residents this academic year. The dermatology residency at Derma-tology Associates of Tallahassee had their initial accreditation site visit in June, and we await notice regarding the status of the program. Dr. George Co-hen, program director, and Faith Stou-tamire, program coordinator, are also to be commended for their efforts in developing the program and preparing for the site visit. The procedural der-matology program also received notifi-cation of approval from the Dermatol-ogy Review Committee of the ACGME to increase the complement of fellows from one to two per year. Dr. Armand Cognetta, procedural dermatology pro-gram director, was this year’s recipient of the Outstanding Physician Award presented by the Capital Medical So-ciety. This award honors physicians who have demonstrated distinguished leadership in organized medicine, com-munity volunteerism, political and gov-ernmental activities, clinical excellence, and educational activities, particularly with medical students. In Pensacola, the pediatric program received notification that all previous program citations have been removed. Julie Floyd, obstetrics and gynecology program coordina-tor, achieved certification through the National Board for Certification of Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education and is entitled to recognize this achievement by using “C-TAGME” after her name. The cer-tification process involves both knowl-edge of the coordinator role and their particular specialty, as well as applica-tion of that information and perfor-mance in the role. Julie has made an in-vestment in her career by achieving this

certification, and she continues to show tremendous dedication to her program. Three individuals in the GME family were selected for induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medi-cal Society: Dr. Snehal Vala, resident in the pediatric program; Dr. Jeremy Sun-seri, fellow in procedural dermatology; and Dr. Julie Z. DeCesare, program director in obstetrics and gynecology. Congratulations to these individuals on this well-deserved recognition of schol-arship, leadership, service and excel-lence.

Annual Health FairThe FSU Pediatric Residency Program and Sacred Heart Children's Hospital participated in the Annual Health Fair for Families on April 23, at  McMil-lian pre-K school  in Escambia Coun-ty.   This year had  almost 200 partici-pants (almost four times  the number from last year).   Multiple booths pro-vided information about vaccinations, healthy eating, water safety, as well as pediatric services such as speech and physical therapy. Dr. Peter Jennings, residency director, along with his son Tommy had  teddy bears for adoption, assuring that each bear found a loving home!  Dr. Jennings' wife, Shawn (Pre-K nurse), ensured that each teddy had its appropriate vaccination prior to go-ing home.  Dr. Jennings and his son are pictured below.

ond-year resident at the Family Medi-cine Residency program in Fort Myers. “Oh, how I wish I was a part of your program,” I said. Little did I know, but my wish was soon to come true! I was raised in Clearwater and spent all my life there before moving away for medi-cal school. Medical school took me away from the Sunshine State, and I had little hope of returning until after all my training was over. It was a great learn-ing experience for me to be away. My first winter coat, my first snow boots, my first white Christmas, my first bliz-zard (which is apparently not just an ice cream concoction at Dairy Queen), etc. Those were brand-new experiences that this Floridian wouldn’t have been through had I not moved away. Though I was happy in my old program, I was ecstatic when Sherry told me there was an open position I could apply for. Within days of apply-ing, I was talking to the program direc-tor, Dr. Gary Goforth, about coming down to Fort Myers for a visit. It all happened very quickly and I made the transfer by the beginning of February. In no time, the entire city of Fort Myers has turned into what I now call home. During my first month, I moved into my new beautiful apartment near the beach, attended many orientations at the Lee Memorial Health System, and made so many great friends. Fort My-ers reminds me of what Clearwater was

quickly get up, make a cup of coffee, eat breakfast, shower, and head out the door. Around 6:20 a.m. I arrive at the hospital to find out what new has hap-pened overnight. I gather the informa-tion, morning laboratory studies, and the plans for each patient that day. I then head off to the wards to see my patients. As a family medicine resident on the in-patient hospital service, this is the most meaningful time of my day. The morn-ing is when I get the most interaction with my patients, get to know them, find out what is affecting their health, and determine how I can improve their quality of life. In family medicine, our goal is to not only learn to apply the science of medicine but also focus on establishing long-term relationships with our patients, hence my enjoy-ment from the time I spend at my pa-tients’ bedsides as well as in the clinic. like when I was growing up. I love the outdoors and the feel of this city and can see myself settling here for the long run. As for the FSU program, I couldn't have chosen a better place to train. Everyone who's a part of the resi-dency is a great example of what a car-ing family physician should be. They're all kind-hearted people who care so much about the well-being of our com-munity. I love how they prioritize edu-cation and create a great learning envi-ronment for our young doctors to grow. I am confident that I will become the best physician I can be and fulfill my potential after my training here. I'm very excited to be here and want to per-sonally thank Lee County for the warm welcome home. Your people are just as warm as the forecast!

FSU / Lee Memorial Hospital (LMH) Family Medicine Residency. Other than in the community of physicians, a “residency” is not something other health care workers, patients, and the general population are familiar with. I did not even realize what residency was until I started applying to medi-cal school. Residency is ultimately a physician’s next step, after graduating from medical school, in a lifelong path of learning their medical specialty. My unique path in medicine started here in Fort Myers as a volunteer at LMH in high school. After graduating from Fort Myers Senior High, I proceeded through four years of undergraduate, and four years of medical school before coming to this point, my first year in residency, where I am now training in my specialty of choice: family medicine. Because I am from Fort Myers, another great joy is being back in the town where I was raised and now being able to contribute to the community that I love and where I plan to settle after I complete my specialty train-ing. Since I have been away from my hometown, much has changed, and our community has grown. A residency program is also a brand new concept to the community. In fact, the FSU / LMH Family Residency is in its second year, with new faces. One of the biggest goals for the new residents and faculty at the program, is to establish an out-standing and renowned program that will better the local community and provide healthcare to those in need. As a family medicine resident, month to month I rotate through dif-ferent specialties, from pediatrics to geriatrics, from OB to sports medicine, and on the general hospital service, as mentioned earlier. I treat all spec-tra of medical ailments while striving to gain additional experience so that I can continue to improve the qual-ity of life here in Southwest Florida.

Mission Trip to Honduras

Recently, Dr. Gary Goforth (third from left, front row), Founding Program Director of the FSU College of Medicine Family Medicine Residency Pro-gram at Lee Memorial Health System in Fort Myers, led a team of 24 to Olanchito, Honduras. For more than a week, the team conducted primary care clinics in 12 villages near Olanchito and saw 1,872 patients, fitted 223 patients for glasses using a new eyeglass program for non-ophthalmologist team members, injected 111 knees and shoulders of patients with severe arthritis, and worked closely with the Village Health Worker program insti-tuted seven years ago. The team included three P.A. students and one medi-cal student. These students reported to Dr. Goforth that they found this to be a life-changing experience and hope to return in the future.

Dr. Armand Cognetta is the recipi-ent of the 2015 Outstanding Physi-cian Award presented by the Capital Medical Society (CMS).  This award honors   physicians who have dem-onstrated distinguished leadership in organized medicine, community volunteerism, political and govern-mental activities, clinical excellence, and educational activities, particu-larly with medical students.  Recent recipients of this award were Dr. Alma Littles in 2014 and Dr. Dean Watson in 2013.  Dr. Cognetta’s many contributions to the greater Tallahassee medical community and dedication to patient care, clinical teaching, and mentoring of trainees were highlighted at the CMS Cel-ebration Awards Dinner on March 26.  Dr. Cognetta (right) is shown above receiving the award from Dr. Joshua Somerset, CMS president (left), after being recognized by Dr. Charles Williams (middle).  Con-gratulations to Dr. Cognetta!  We are proud to have you as part of our GME community.
