When I first arrived at Grafton, MA for my Advanced Human Service Worker Training, I felt ready for the new experience. But my time was cut short due to personal matters. I felt defeated and at a loss for a while. However, I knew that I wanted better for myself and Job Corps could provide me the tools that I needed to truly make something of my life. I persevered and decided to re-enroll as a student in the HSW trade. I am so entirely thankful that I did. I ve gained lifesaving skills due to my CPR training and a Managing Aggressive Behavior certificate which looks great on my resume, in addition to leadership/management skills as well. Ive also learned that things dont always go as planned; however, there are choices to be made and I still have the power in my hands to make good choices in regards to the projection of my life. Relieved, excited, supported, and encouraged are just a few of the emotions that describe how I feel as I enter into the next chapter of my life. The next step for me is being a Camp Counselor for the ARC, an organization that improves the lives of adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities, which is something that I am very excited about! My long term goal is to open a wellness center for women of color where the focus would be on therapeutic modalities and building a sisterhood. Due to the training that Job Corps provided me, I feel that I can truly actualize my career goals . ~ Zuleika Simon, HSW Student Pictured: Zuleika Simon achieves her Residential and Youth Care Professional Certification!

My time as a student at Job Corps hasn’t been the easiest, as this is not my first time around. I’ve gained lifesaving skills due to my CPR training and a Managing Aggressive Behavior certificate which looks great on my resume, in addition to leadership/management skills as well. I’ve also learned that things don’t always go as planned; however, there are choices to be made and I still have the power in my hands to make good choices in regards to the projection of my life.

Grafton Job Corps Student Government Association sponsored the 2018 Prom on June 13th at the Mechanics Hall in Worcester Massachusetts. Approximately 80 students and their dates attended. Students dressed to the nines in gowns and tuxedos and danced the night way. DJ Jason Souza from The Premier Company of New England kept the students on the floor. The dinner, catered by Bushel N. Peck, offered an array of delicious dishes for the students to enjoy.

“I was particularly happy with how well everyone meshed together and how many people attended, even a number of new students,” said SGA President Yasmin Almazan.

Students voted Alexander King and Genesis Medina as King and Queen of the Prom. It was a night that will not soon be forgotten.

Student Hakeim Burwell took part in the An-nual Foster Alumni Walk held on the Boston Common, where he met Kate Harrison who lead an organization called “Tradeswomen’s Equity”, which is a lot like the Job Corps Program, but offers more of the Construction trades. Parents attending were interested in the training offered at

Hakeim spoke of Fiona Rutagengwa, the woman who had put the Foster Alumni Walk together. “She inspired me with her leadership, and uniting those who had been taken from their homes and placed in foster care at a young age,” said Hakeim.

This week the CPP Instructors nominated not one, but two hard working students to be awarded CPP Star of the week. Selena Vega (left) and Mateo Murillo (right) are two fun loving and easy going students. Both have been extremely helpful to not only their peers, but also instructors. Their positive attitudes and honesty have been a refreshing support in CPP. Mateo is celebrating his 21

st birthday this week on

Friday 6/22. He comes from Fort Hall, Idaho and is excited to stay in touch with his Native American heritage in MA. He came to GJC to plan for his future, so he will take CMA in hopes of becoming a doctor. Selena is 20 years old from Worcester and has worked with Job Corps students before when she worked at Safe Homes. Selena came to GJC to take Culinary and hopes to be a head chef someday. She came to Job Corps for a fresh start and loves going on rec trips. An interesting fact about her is that she is Hispanic. Both Mateo and Selena advise students and staff to trust their gut and be picky about who else to trust. If you see them on center, say hello!
