Official Name and GovernmentThe Russian Federation (Russia), legal successor to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) since 26 December 1991. State structure – federative, each region has executive and legislative branches. Head of State – President (Russia is a Presidential Republic), elected every 4 years by direct elections.
AreaTotal area – 17,075,200 sq km (6,592,800 sq mi). Length – 9000 km from east to west and 5000 km from north to south. One fourth of the territory lies in Europe, the other part – in Asia. ! Russia is the largest country in the world.
Capital Moscow, 11,6 million citizens.
Population 142,8 million people.Ethnic groups - Russians (80%), Tatars, Ukrainians, Belorussians, Polish, Germans, Jews, Caucasians etc. (up to 100 different ethnicities and faiths).

3.1.2. MetroSt.Petersburg metro is the deepest subway in the world. St.Petersburg metro has five lines. See the English language metro scheme below (pict.1). Train arrival period (in average) – 2-3 minutes.

Prohibited:• smoking (as well as in any other means of transport); • eating or drinking;• transporting bicycles (except in the folding and covers).

3.1.3. Bus, Trams and TrolleysTypes of buses in St. Petersburg:
• Regular buses (trams, trolleys). Both tickets and monthly passes are valid. Tickets can be bought on board in cash, the monthly pass should be shown to the conductor.
• K-buses, T-buses (called “marshrutnoye taksi” - minibus). Only cash accepted, fare is paid to the driver. Stops – at the passengers request. The driver should be notified loudly in advance.
! When using a bus, a trolley or a tram keep your ticket during the whole trip as you may be asked to declare it by a ticket inspector.
3.2. Currency exchangeTips:
• change money in the bank or exchange office, never in the street;• take enough cash when you go out (cash the card or cheques in advance to avoid difficulties); • the most “convenient” currency to bring to Russia is USD or Euro; • Visa and MasterCard are accepted almost everywhere, AMEX and Diners Club owners might have
problems cashing the cards.

5.4. Medical careMedical services are provided in the presence of insurance policy. All international students on arrival in SPbSPU should issue the contract of medical insurance. Medical policy issued by the university allows you to:
• to pass necessary medical examination in policlinic №76 (11 Hlopina str.);• to receive expert consultation on a profile of your disease in policlinic No. 76 (11 Hlopina str.);) or to
receive medical treatment in this policlinic;• to call if necessary an ambulance

5.5. Visa support, registration and residence regulations
in Russian Federation for international students
5.5.1. Entrance Invitation and VisaTo obtain “Student Visa” applicants should receive from the University an official “Entrance Invitation to Russian Federation”.! Student must enter (arrive) the University according to the deadlines specified in the Invitation letter to study at SPbSPU, and committed not less than 10 days before visa expiry
5.5.2. Coming to Russian FederationMigration cardWhen crossing the borders of the Russian Federation one have to get and to fill in a migtration card. It is allowed to fill in the information about himself Russian or Roman letters.Migration Card should be filled personally by student.
Registration in Migration ServiceOn arrival in Russia it is necessary to register and get notification form of the arrival of a foreign national in the place of residence within 3 business days. Foreign national can do these procedures:
• in SPbSPU Migration Service.• with the help of his relatives residing in Russian Federation. In this case he is obliged to report about
his registration and getting notification form of the arrival within 7 days and submit notification form to SPbSPU Migration Service.
In case of a late migration registration penalty is charged (penalty is from 2000 roubles).
5.5.3. Staying on the territory of The Russian FederationWHILE STAYING ON THE TERRITORY OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION, a student is obliged:
• to watch his documents and comply with all the rules of a foreign national staying on the territory of Russia.
• In case of a damage or a loss of a passport, migration card or notification form a foreign national is obliged to notify SPbSPU Migration Service within 3 days.
• 20 days before the end of the migration registration and the previous visa student is obliged to issue or prolong multiple visa at the Migration Service of the University.
• If a student has left the Russian Federation on vacation or visited another city in Russia, he obliged to inform SPbSPU Migration Service and issue a new migration registration within 3 days.

! Your health and safety depend on your everyday decisions. You should:
1. Consider your health and other personal circumstances when applying for a place in a program.2. Provide the host University with all the personal data that is necessary for planning a safe and healthy
study in Russia.3. Obtain and maintain appropriate insurance coverage.4. Keep your parents informed about your decisions and health problems. 5. Understand and comply with the terms of participation, codes of conduct, and emergency proce-
dures of the program, and obey host-country laws.6. Be aware of local conditions and customs that may present health or safety risks when making daily
choices and decisions. Promptly express any health or safety concerns to the program staff or other appropriate individuals.
7. Accept responsibility for your own decisions and actions.8. Become familiar with the procedures for obtaining emergency health and law enforcement services
in Russia.9. Follow the program policies for keeping program staff informed of your whereabouts and well-being.10.
Health Tips• Don’t drink tap water unless it is filtered or boiled;• Avoid buying food in the street;• Purchase alcohol in special shops only;• Wash fruit and vegetables carefully;• Take care of your teeth and skin – they may suffer from the climate changes;• Arrange medical insurance beforehand.
Your Safety in the Street• Be alert when crossing the street. If available, use the underground passageways. • Do not touch the bags or parcels left in public places – call the police. • Always carry your passport or other personal identity document with you.• Always carry a card with the address of your stay and the telephone number written in Russian lan-
