My friends each year at this time we gather to remember our good and true companions who have gone from us to toil inthe Heavenly vineyards of the Lord God. While we grieve that they are no longer with us, let us rejoice that they are in theloving embrace of the Almighty.Let the words of St. John, Chapter 11, Verses 25 and 26 help us to put their loss in perspective as we read: “ I am theresurrection and the life, saith the Lord : He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live : and whosoeverliveth and believeth in Me shall never die. “
Most Excellent Companion C Hardy then read out the names of our Departed Companions:

ADDRESS OF THE GRAND FIRST PRINCIPAL 2013-2014 – M EX COMP GARY DUNN
Grand 1st Principle’s Remark’sDistinguished Companions in the East, Companions all. My trip is almost at an end, by tonight it will be over. Ihave so very much enjoyed my year as Grand First Principle of the Royal Arch of Manitoba, and also thepreceding two years leading up to this day.
The important part of a trip is usually its destination, but in my case it has been the journey. The time spenttraveling with friends, the fun, the fellowship, on our visits to the Chapters and Masonic functions have leftwonderful lasting memories for me. I would like to thank all the Companions who accompanied me with theGrand Line these last three years
Our theme for the past year was the Importance of family, Personal and Masonic. I would like to begin withthe Masonic part.
This past June the 24th, it was my pleasure with the assistance of many Companions to make a presentationof the philanthropic project fund to the Rainbow Walk at Westwood Presbyterian Church. This was to honourthe memory of Cecilia Spence, who was a member of the Hardy family, and often attended the convocationwith Cliff and Diane.
This Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons has always been involved with the Masonic Family of Manitoba. This past year we attended parades in Selkirk, Morris and Morden. We have attended at Job’s Daughters,Demolay, Eastern Star, Daughter’s of the Nile, Grand Lodge, Lodges, Scottish Rite and Khartum Shrine’sfunctions. We worked at the Masonic Family barbeque in August, and the Christmas Gift wrapping fund raisingbooth in December at Garden City Mall. I would like to thank all the Companions and their families whoassisted in all these endeavors. Sandy and I also attended the New Year’s Day Levee at the Legislativebuilding.
On our official visits and unofficial visits to the seven Chapters in Manitoba, the hospitality was exceptional, and the ritual work by the Companions was excellent. I cannot properly express how much fun and fellowship
8
was enjoyed by all. The northern trip to Dauphin and Flin Flon was made more enjoyable this past yearbecause of reasonable weather, and the welcome we received was again special. Every southern companionshould try and make that trip.
The Chapters have worked very hard at recruiting well qualified new Royal Arch Masons. Companions, because of your dedication, I am pleased to report that we have increased our membership in this past year, and have many brothers who will be initiated in the upcoming year.
There are many people, I wish to thank on my journey. The Grand officers, R.E.C. Rick Porter, R.E.C. NeilMcMillan, the District Superintendents, R.E.C. Ivan Leblanc and R.E.C. John Bjore, and the Companions thatheld offices, and attended many of our visits.
Thank you to M.E.C. Vic Bryll and R.E.C. John Duff, who did several presentations of the Royal Arch Masonsprogram to lodges this year. Thanks to M.E.Companion’s Jack Hooper, Dean Hawes, Vic Bryll and StanPayne, for their consultation and advice throughout my term.
Mostly I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to my mentor and good friend M.E.C. Jim Barratt for hisuntiring dedication to keeping me focused on my responsibilities and duties as Grand 1st Principle. Thank youJim.
Continuing on with our theme, the Importance of Family --Personal None of our accomplishments arepossible, as we Companions know, without the support of our families, especially our wives. We thank themfor their time, patience, and understanding of the commitment that their partners have made. At this time Iwould like to thank my family and friends who have stood by me throughout my travels, now and in the past. Our children, Candace, Lorraine and Craig, their spouses, and their families have always been there when Ineeded a sounding board. They were all here last year, when I began my journey as Grand 1st Principle.Candace and her husband Bob are here this weekend, to assist me at the end of a most fulfilling yearI wish to thank my wife Sandy, who has been beside me all of our married life. This year she has beenoutstanding in her supportNow comes the words, everyone wants to hear. In ClosingThank you Companions, my journey is near an end, and I do hope you will attend the banquet, and thehospitality room after.

The Grand officers and District Superintendents made their officialvisits and were cordially received by the Chapters. The annual Northern trip was a success and twocompanions have made information presentations on Royal Arch to Masonic craft lodges which were wellreceived.
We have participated with other Masonic bodies in the “Masonic Family” activities, cooking at a barbeques, participating in summer parades and Christmas gift wrapping activities. The Masonic family is an effort that hasincreased the spirit of cooperation among the members of all branches of Freemasonry and we can be proudof this made in Manitoba activity.
The Chapters continue to attract new members which provides work for our companions and helps maintainmembership and interest in the Chapters.
The incoming Grand Chapter elected and appointed officers are forward to a good year in 2014-15.. Carried
Report of the Grand Historian 2013-2014
Most Excellent Companion Gary Dunn, Distinguished Guests, Companions All.
As I look back on Masonic year 2013, I am saddened to report that this Grand Chapter has lost some stalwart Past GrandFirst Principals, Most Excellent Companions Hugh Ross and Jack Webster
HUGH TORRENCE ROSS 18 October 1922 – 19 January 2013
Most Excellent Companion Hugh Ross was born in West Kildonan, and received his education in Cypress River and theUniversity of Manitoba receiving a Diploma in Agriculture in 1942. He farmed with his father into the 1960s, retiring in1978. He married Myrtle Cook in 1975 and they enjoyed travelling, fishing trips and attending many Masonic functions.
Hugh’s Masonic journey began in 1954 when he was initiated into Cypress Lodge #82 where he progressed through thechairs and was Worshipful Master 5 times, and he was District Deputy Grand Master in 1965-66.
15
He was received into Royal Arch Masonry in 1963 where he was First Principal three times. He served as Grand DistrictSuperintendent in 1969, as Grand Treasurer from 1982 to 1992, and then in 1994 became Grand J, 1995 Grand H and in1996-97 he was Grand Z of this Grand Chapter.
Hugh was a member of many Masonic orders. He was a charter member of the Manitoba Crocus York Rite SovereignCollege and in 1989 received his highest Masonic honour, the Order of the Purple Cross. He was also a charter memberof the Allied Masonic Degrees in Brandon and the Grand Valley Conclave of the Red Cross of Constantine. MostIllustrious Knight Companion Hugh Ross G.C.C. was Grand Sovereign of the Red Cross of Constantine of Canada in 2000.He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the White Shrine of Jerusalem and the Shrine.
Most Excellent Companion Ross was humble in his Grand First Principal’s address as he said to the Royal Arch Masons ofManitoba, “You have given me the most memorable period of my lifetime, for all of which I can only say “Thank You””.Hugh was a quiet individual, but was always helpful in his own Masonic way.
He is survived by his niece, her husband and three grandsons, as well as Myrtle’s family of four.
Most Excellent Companion Hugh Torrence Ross passed away 19 January 2013.
PETER JOHN “JACK” WEBSTER 3 January 1922 – 17 April 2013

Most Excellent Companion Webster began his Masonic career in 1951 as he joined Brandon Lodge 19, and he served astheir Worshipful Master in 1961 and he was Grand Tyler for the Grand Lodge of Manitoba in 1993.
He was exalted in Keystone Chapter 5 in 1952 and became First Principal in 1960 and District Superintendent in 1965.During his time in Nova Scotia, he was Excellent High Priest in Keystone Chapter #24. When he returned to Brandon, heserved for many years as Scribe N in Keystone Chapter #5. He was elected Grand J in 1995, Grand H in 1996 and GrandFirst Principal for the years 1997-1998, which was the 75th anniversary year for Royal Arch Masonry in Manitoba, and forwhich he was most pleased to represent this Grand Chapter as he travelled throughout the province and to otherjurisdictions.

ROYAL ARCH MASONS CHAPTER
GRAND DISTRICT #1 SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT2013-2014
Following my installation in April 2013, I was unable to conduct any Official Visitations because the Chapterswere winding down for the summer break. I resumed activities in September 2013 and was able to visit thethree Chapters on various occasions.
Notifications of my intended visits were always sent ahead of time. While one Chapter did not publish thenotification in their monthly notice, the remaining two did. During my visitation, I was well received andintroduced to the Companions in proper manner. The welcome was always warm although occasionally, someprotocol was overlooked or missing. Of the three Chapters, I witnessed Degrees being Conferred in only two.
Red River #21 was well prepared and did an excellent job on the M.M.M. and M.E.M. Degrees on threeCompanions. The Holy R.A. was conferred on two of the Companions in March 2014, while the thirdCompanion was absent due to private business issues. He will receive his Degree in April 2014. Overall, RedRiver #21 is thriving and Companions take great pride in their work, with an ongoing search for new members.
Prince Rupert #1 is trying very hard to maintain their membership. I made several visits and was rewarded bywitnessing the Conferring of the M.M.M. Degree on three new members. The work was conducted verysmoothly and in dignity. They have managed to recruit some younger Officers with the assistance of the seniorcore. They are keeping their Chapter functioning well and the future is optimistic for them.
Prince of Wales #11 is my own Chapter. It was disappointing that they could only open in M.M.M. Degree dueto a shortage of members and officers. Whether the lack of promoting my intended visit to the Companions hada bearing, or whether it was because many Officers are away for the winter season, or whether it was thedaunting winter road conditions, is left open to question. Absenteeism, especially in winter, is increasinglyaffecting most fraternal organizations. However, it is difficult to blame those retirees' being somewhere else, enjoying a warmer climate. They have paid their dues, but then the problem falls squarely upon us who arepresent. Overall, the ones left behind are certainly doing their best to keep the Chapter moving. The solutionmay lie in ramping up the promotion to attract younger Companions. The senior core would need to provide theencouragement for them to be ready to step in, and step up, for the survival of any Chapter.
Conclusion:
As my year as District Superintendent draws to a close, I am pleased to report I found it to be enjoyable andfulfilling. I would like to express my warmest gratitude to the Companions who accompanied me on myvisitations, and in sharing the pleasant camaraderie of travelling together (in occasional hazardous roadconditions).
A special Thank You is also extended to both M.E.C. Jim Barratt, Grand Scribe "E", for his invaluable guidanceand unwavering support; and to M.E.C. Gary Dunn, Grand First Principal, for his inspiration as our leader.
As we approach the 2014-2015 activities, we can confidently look forward to being in the good hands ofCompanion Jack Fryatt, who has graciously accepted the nomination to serve as Grand District #1Superintendent.
Fraternally,
R.E. Companion Ivan LeBlancGrand District SuperintendentDistrict #1, 2013-2014

Report of the Grand Superintendent
Of District TWO 2013 - 2014
Royal Arch Masons of Manitoba
As Grand Superintendent of District #2, I have visited all the Chapters within the District, and accompanied theGrand First Principal on his visit to two of the three Chapters.
In November of 2013 I made an Official Visit to Rabboni Chapter #7 in Dauphin at their regular meeting despitesome weather concerns. The Chapter was opened in regular form, and normal business discussed. The workwas well done. The theme of my message was that each member should do something to bring Royal Arch tothe attention of other Masons. After the Chapter was closed, there was a light lunch served.
In December, 2013 I made an Official Visit to Keystone Chapter #5 in Brandon. Unfortunately weatherinterrupted the plans of some who would normally attend, and there were insufficient numbers to open thechapter that afternoon. However, there was a business meeting with those attending, and a lively discussionensued about the future of Royal Arch in Manitoba and the need for recruiting more members.
In March of 2014 the Grand Superintendent visited Keystone Chapter #2 in Portage la Prairie. After opening indue form, a practise of the Mark Master Masons degree was held, as the candidate was not available thatevening. It is expected that there will be two candidates taking this honorary degree in April. Again theSuperintendent’s message was to promote Royal Arch to other masons on a personal or group basis to helpattract new members.
Following the Official Visit to Keystone #2 on March 13, 2014, the District Two Annual Meeting was held. TheMinutes of that meeting are attached to this report. District #2 membership continues to decline now stands atonly 88 members, down from 149 ten years ago. Financially the District is sound enough that the Treasurersuggested that the District dues could be reduced, but this was rejected in order to build a bit more of asurplus. The meeting also decided that Rabonni Chapter #7 in Dauphin would put forth the name of the nextGrand Superintendent in time for the RAM Executive Meeting at the end of March 2014.
Lastly I want to thank all Royal Arch members for giving me the privilege of serving as Grand Superintendentof District #2. It has been a very gratifying experience.
Respectfully Submitted, R.E. Comp. John L. Bjore, Seconded by M Ex Comp L Hansen Carried
REPORT OF THE GRAND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE 2013 - 2014Most Excellent Companion Dunn, the Grand Executive held two meetings this past term, one on September
29, 2013 and the second on March 23, 2014. The work done by the members has been or will be presented intheir annual reports so it is not my job to repeat it. I would like to thank all those companions who took part inand /or chaired the various committees; they have done excellent work.
At the same time I would like to let you all know that there was considerable discussion on the PhilanthropicFund; its purpose, the monies utilization and the possible capping of the funding drive. I am sure this particularcommittee will have a great deal of work to do in the coming year and the Grand Executive will have a greatdeal to discuss and hopefully we will reach an acceptable resolution.
Once again my heartfelt thanks to all the members of the Executive.
Respectfully submitted for information only R Ex Comp R Porter

Grand First Principal’s AddressApril 26, 2014
Companions, Ladies and Guests I should first like to thank you all for honoring us with your presence. Many ofyou could have found other things to do today but you chose to spend it with us and we are all grateful.
It is customary to thank all those who got us to this point in time: The Installation Team did an excellent job andwe are deeply indebted to them, for without their efforts we could not continue; Our predecessors in Office have set afine example and we shall have to work very hard to match their efforts. I would also like to thank our Grand Scribe “E”,Most Excellent Companion Jim Barratt for staying on one more year.
I personally would like to thank all those companions who dragged me “Kicking and Screaming” to accept this task, particularly Most Excellent Companion Rick Laronde and Rt. Excellent Companion Bert Chambers, I am sure I can comeup with a suitable reward later this evening.
Most especially I must thank the one person who has allowed me take part in all the Masonic paths I have followed overthe past 42 years, my partner Peggy. She has put up with a lot and she has contributed so much to making my masoniccareer as exciting and rewarding as it has been. Thanks Peg!
Every Grand First Principal upon taking office chooses a theme for his year. My theme is:
To whom much is given — much is expected
This is going to require some explanation. We live in one of the most beautiful countries on earth. We have, for the mostpart, been blessed with relatively good health and good fortune. We belong to a fraternity which has existed for animpossibly long time. A fraternity which, I might add, is growing in much of the rest of the world. Unfortunately it is notdoing so well in Manitoba.
For a few years now the leaders of our fraternity have been working on getting more members for Royal Arch Masonry. We have a problem though because we are not able to recruit members off the street. Our members must come from theranks of Freemasons and we have not been terribly successful. We can point to one of the prime reasons why our numberstook a precipitous drop; the removal of restrictions on who can become a Shriner.
Freemasonry is a marvelous concept which endeavors to take good men and make them better. Royal Arch Masonry, andits concordant and Appendant bodies, provides deeper and more insightful teachings on the same subject of improvement.
It is easy to believe or delude ourselves in to thinking that society is not hearing us but it is more likely that we are notspeaking clearly enough.
My theme is intended to suggest that we, who are so fortunate, must ensure that Royal Arch Masonry and implicitlyFreemasonry, can grow and thrive in Manitoba not because we have buildings and committees to support but because ourteachings cannot be forgotten but must be shared with all for the betterment of society.
I hope that each of you will make a personal effort to increase our fraternity; not because it would be nice but because it isessential to society. Don’t wait for your leaders to take the first step, You, who are so blessed must do it. Help your Lodgegrow and help your Chapter grow!
Thank you for your kind attention now let’s get it done!
