Christina Lake firefighters responded to a call from a pregnant woman and ended up helping her give birth in the back seat of her car at the Tempo Gas Station at the Lake. Ken Gresley-Jones, Christina Lake Fire Rescue chief, told the Gazette they got a call from 9-1-1 at 5:57 a.m. on Feb. 2 and attended shortly after. “What happened was the people were on their way to Nelson to have the baby and they made it to the long, straight stretch on the highway before Paulsen Bridge,” he recalled. “She said, ‘I’m not gonna make it. Let’s head back.’ They got as far as the Tempo and they called 9-1-1. We showed up and, well, she had the baby!” Gresley-Jones said it was definitely a first for Chris- tina Lake Fire Rescue. He’s just glad everything went well and the baby is a healthy boy. “It’s our first delivery,” he said. “It went fine. You always worry about what if. But if everything is right it’s one of the most natural things there is. This one was and thank God. You don’t want complications with something like that. It’s just too precious a time to have problems and we didn’t. It was great.” Gresley-Jones said the department had an emer- gency childbirth kit which they used. B.C. Ambulance paramedics showed up on scene shortly after the baby was born. “The delivery took place by the mom and one of our first responders,” he said. “It’s a first. It went well. They were fairly calm.” For the mother, it was not her first—something that Gresley-Jones was very thankful for. He said the cou- ple, who are from Grand Forks, was very calm, espe- cially considering the circumstances. When they first arrived on the scene, Gresley-Jones asked the mother how far along she was. “She said, ‘I’m delivering,’” he recalled. Gresley-Jones said they talked about opening the Tempo station to give them more room. “There was no time for that,” he said. “The baby was coming. “There’s not much else to say—it all went well like it’s supposed to,” said Gresley-Jones. “It was cool be- ing a part of it and I’m really glad it all went well. That kind of thing doesn’t happen everyday. It was a heck of a way to start the day.” Mom and baby were taken by ambulance to Bound- ary Hospital in Grand Forks just as a precaution. J.P. LaRose (with camera) and Matt McGarva of the B.C. Lions gave a presentation on being More Than A Bystander at GFSS Thursday. The pair posed with several students such as Melina Koh (above) for pictures afterwards. Craig Lindsay photo

A couple of B.C. Lions were at Grand Forks Secondary on Jan. 29 giving the message that it’s okay to speak up against violence and abuse against girls and women.

The presentation was part of the Lions’ tour-ing series called Don’t Be A Bystander in which they urge students to break the silence on vio-lence.

The players, J.R. LaRose and Matt McGarva, talked about their personal experiences with women they know being abused. They also pre-sented the students with different scenarios and talked over different options when seeing abuse.

The pair than answered questions from the students, took pictures, and then met with a smaller group of students for a more interactive workshop.

LaRose, who is a 1.8M tall safety, has been in-volved with the program for four years. He has spoken at hundreds of school throughout B.C. during that time.

“The thing that got me involved was that I have a personal story that really hit home see-ing my mom and also my sister being abused,” he told the Gazette. “I found myself being a bystander and not knowing what to do as a youngster. I think so many other kids are faced with those situations. We just want to help

raise awareness and provide options for kids who are going through what I went through.” LaRose said it’s important for youth to know that by doing nothing you are essentially saying that those actions are okay.

“We want people to speak up about these is-sues,” he said.

LaRose said this was the sixth stop in a tour of the Kootenays. “This whole area has been great. We’ve been to six different schools after start-ing in Cranbrook. This is the end of the tour.” LaRose said the input from the kids has been great.

“We’ve done a lot of different tours but I think this has been the best for feedback and open dis-cussion where kids ask a lot of questions about the program,” he said. “That’s what it’s all about. We want to have open discussions and have them come up with their own options.”

GFSS Grade 10 student Alaina Condruk said she thought the presentation was very well done and very informative. “I thought it was very ed-ucational,” she said. “They touched on a subject that a lot of people aren’t really that aware of. It was for a good cause and it was good to have them at our school.”

Condruk said it was interesting to hear the personal stories of violence against women from the Lions’ players.

“You know if it can happen to them, it can happen to anyone,” she said.

Film focuses on restorative justice

About 60 people showed up at the GEM Theatre on Thursday night (Jan. 29) for a viewing of the film A Healing River and a discussion after-wards. The film is a documentary about restorative justice and features interviews with several different subjects with a wide range of experi-ences from First Nations to prisoners to university professors to provin-cial court judges.

After the film, the movie producers, Larry Moore and Cathie Douglas, as well as local RCMP Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison and Boundary Restorative Justice program coordinator Richard Tarnoff panelled a discussion about the film and the role of restorative justice in the community.

“Part of our mandate for our program is to inform the community about what we do and what restorative justice is, and to do that we make presentations and we often have information tables at events,” said Tar-noff.

Tarnoff said the film presentation and discussion was a natural pro-gression from those. He said he contacted all the parties and was able to set it up.

“I think the film, though short, gives a good picture of how restorative justice is connected to all aspects of the community—child development, crime, community relations, victim services—and so it gives a bigger pic-ture,” said Tarnoff. “This film takes a deeper look and a broader look at what communities need to be safe and healthy and heal when harm hap-pens and what a challenge that is.”

Tarnoff said the discussion after the viewing was a great opportunity for those in the audience to talk about what they thought of the film.

“It was very good,” he said. “I thought it was a great turnout. It was a lot more than we expected for something that most people would see as dry and academic. People were really forthcoming with their ideas and questions.”

Tarnoff said the group is very appreciative of the staff at the GEM for allowing them to use the theatre. He also praised the work of Staff Sgt. Harrison, whom he says has been very supportive of the program.

Anyone wanting more information about the program can contact Tarnoff by phone at 250-442-8633 or email [email protected].

EditorialiNSIGHTyour news view

As a newspaper, the Gazette tries to bring all the news that we think is important to our readers. Sometimes that news is nega-tive because a car accident is deemed inter-esting while “car drives through town with no problem,” doesn’t sell many papers.

That said, we enjoy bringing good news stories such as the front page story about Christina Lake Fire Rescue helping to de-liver a baby in the back of a car.

The husband and expecting mother were almost at the Paulsen Bridge en route to Nelson when it was determined that the mother couldn’t wait.

Fortunately, the couple were able to make it to the Tempo Gas Station in Chris-tina Lake and call 9-1-1.

Thankfully everything went well and the baby is fine by all reports; however, this latest incident brings to the forefront the discussion about the lack of obstetrics at Boundary Hospital in Grand Forks.

There are always what-ifs. What if they had been out of cell phone range and some-thing went wrong?

There are on average 45 mothers per year from Grand Forks and 15 from the Kettle Valley who have to travel out of town to have their babies.

How many young mothers are in that situation where they and their baby are at risk because we don’t have the ability to safely have births in Grand Forks?

The drive to Nelson, Trail or Kelowna is over two hours and during the winter the roads can be treacherous, adding more stress to an already stressful situation.

What would it take to have obstetrics return to Grand Forks? How much would it cost? Can we at least afford a feasibility study to look into it?

HOW TO REACH US

Observing the effect of the Big Game

It is truly wonderful to observe the effect of the Big Game on the world around us. (I am not allowed to use the real name of the Big Game be-cause the NFL would sue me, the editor, the paper, Black Press and all our descendents.)

People normally not inter-ested in football pitch right in, making Buffalo wings, pizza and buying bags of various sorts of chips. Indeed, food is

in part what makes the Game so Big.

It is one of only a few oc-casions when one is given permission to eat and drink whatever one wants, and then joke about it. It is sort of like the bloating that takes place at Thanksgiving, except that Thanksgiving dinners are ac-tually healthy.

One cannot be neutral when it comes to the Big Game. One must choose one team over the other and then watch excitedly, screaming at every score, bellowing at ev-ery referee’s mistake.

My wife, normally com-pletely under control, ut-tered noises whenever her

Seahawks scored that seemed to be...well, primitive, sounds that had their beginnings I’m certain on the Serengeti many millennia ago. I think she might have used some very colourful language if we had not had guests at our house.

The other essential ele-ments of watching the Big Game consist of various forms of victory dances. For minor successes on the field one can stand at one’s place at the couch and do some minor gy-rations.

For scoring plays, one can take a few steps from side to side, strutting appropriately. One must be careful though to keep the celebrations under

control, lest one offends the host of the Big Game party.

Above all, one must re-serve the full blown, Michael Jackson moonwalk or strut-ting, crowing rooster imitation until final victory is assured. Those who strut too soon will find themselves alone for the next Big Game.

At this point, you may be thinking that being excluded from the silliness of the Big Game may not be a bad thing. You may be right, and anyway there is always skiing or Eng-lish Premier League football to watch instead.

Better yet, just go outside for a couple of hours.

Opinion

Letters to the editor The affordablechildcare plan

NDP leader Tom Mulcair has recently launched a plan for affordable childcare in Canada. It is no secret that Que-bec has the most affordable childcare in the country, and Tom, as a former Quebec cabinet minister, witnessed the success affordable child-care played in helping families and boosting the economy of the province. His plan would build on the Quebec model to bring quality, accessible childcare to all of Canada.

Compared with some European and English-speaking countries, the employment rate for women in Canada is high—at about 75 per cent. Both parents work in two-thirds of Canadian families. There are currently 900,000 Canadian children in need of care with no access to regulated afford-able spaces.

Some families pay thousands of dollars every month for licensed childcare—more than they pay in rent or for their mortgages.

Tom’s plan anticipates creating one million new spaces over the eight year phase-in period and reducing parents’ costs to no more than $15 per day for each child. Recog-nizing that delivery of childcare is regulated provincially, the NDP will consult with provinces, territories and indig-enous communities in the development of a childcare strat-egy that will work for all stakeholders.

The initial annual investment of 1.9 billion dollars will fund 370,000 new spaces. After eight years the annual fed-eral investment in childcare will have increased by $5 bil-lion. Costly, yes, but over and above the obvious benefits to parents, the economist Pierre Fortin asserts that the pro-gram will be self-financing.

A TD Bank research survey suggests that for every $1 invested in early childhood education, the benefits to fed-eral and provincial governments range from $1.49 to $2.78 in increased tax revenues and decreased social spending.

Most Canadians don’t equate affordable childcare with growth in the national economy, but the accessibility of childcare plays a significant role in labour force participa-tion, particularly for women. David MacDonald, a senior economist with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alterna-tives, has found that when parents are given an afford-able childcare option, as in Quebec, they overwhelmingly choose to work.

Contrast this with income splitting, the tax incentive being implemented by the current federal government. In other countries where income splitting has been in-troduced, participation by women in the workforce goes down with no comparable increase in men’s participation. The consequence is a smaller labour force which ultimately slows economic growth.

In the last nine years costs for childcare have skyrock-eted. B.C. has among the highest fees in Canada, and in many households with infants or very young children both parents cannot afford to work. Even if they could find li-censed childcare space, their cost per child could be as high as 35 percent of their income.

The benefits of investing in childcare are far reaching. It is time for Canada to make a real commitment.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

From the hillAlex AtAmAnenko

Statements need some clarification

No need to be paranoid about meter

Thanks for coverage

Editor, The Gazette:An open letter, in part, to mayor and council of Grand Forks:

Thank you for giving our family the opportunity to attend your recent council meeting. I felt the need to clarify some statements that were made.

I realize this issue of a dispensary in Grand Forks is a contentious one which has come up because two lo-cal citizens complained. There is much stigma attached to this complex medicinal plant and we all need to take every opportunity to learn. Education will dispel the myths associated with marijuana.

The RCMP have been put in a tough spot and were compelled to enforce the law due to these two com-plaints.

They have used discretion. They could have gone into the dispensary with force and confiscated all the product, charging Jim Leslie and his partners with dealing in an illegal substance.

I did, however, feel strongly that it was highly inappropriate for the RCMP to speak to the death of Cst. Wynn in Alberta as part of a concern for safety of members and citizens alike in Grand Forks because of what criminal element a dispensary might at-tract. We would be doing a disservice to Cst. Wynn by comparing the failings of our legal system in his unfortunate, tragic death and this issue before you in Grand Forks.

I believe strongly from my close ties to the RCMP that your bigger concerns are the illegal grow ops in houses and buildings as well as illegal dealing of the highly addictive drugs like meth. As one councillor mentioned, pharmacies are just as at risk if not greater, for robberies.

Marijuana is not addictive, it is does not have nico-tine as was falsely stated by the one RCMP officer, and

it is not a “gateway drug.” I need to also speak to the statement by the police

officer that all people could simply go online to pur-chase their cannabis medicine legally rather than going to a dispensary and speaking to a person of knowledge like Jim Leslie.

Do you buy your pharmaceutical medicine online even though it is available there? Our granddaughter Kyla needs a highly concentrated oil produced in a lab that gives lab results. Jim found us that lab. You cannot purchase this online for a child. Adults should not be subjected to that either.

You cannot achieve good results from making the oil at home. I have referred many suffering people to Jim because of his knowledge of the product and its uses. I trust the product he gets is from reliable sources and safe.

This is why dispensaries are so necessary and this needs to be included with your request for changes in our law. No doubt we need regulations and approval processes but people need a place to go to talk to someone and get their medicine now.

Grand Forks is very lucky to have someone like Jim Leslie and his team in their community. It would be your great loss to have him move to a community that is more accepting and encouraging of his work.

Thank you for your motion to send a letter forward to the Supreme Court and the federal government in support of all derivatives of marijuana as a form of medicine.

Your understanding of that need is evident; your support with changing the law is a huge step for-ward.

Elaine and Chris Nuessler, retired RCMP

Editor, The Gazette:Further to those people who are paranoid over a piece of

equipment called a water meter:We have had ours since October 2014, installed at our request

by telephone appointment by a courteous, qualified plumber who removed his shoes at the door. Since then, we have not heard it, smelled it or been threatened by it. The only time I see it is when I go downstairs to do the laundry.

It gives me a great deal of comfort knowing that during the hot summer days in July and August when the midnight garden-ers draw down our reservoir to danger level, we shall have suf-ficient water to protect the town from hot flying ash from forest fires.

Oh, yes, in answer to the question asked me last October at the Poetry Café: “No, I did not take it to my leader!”

Helen E. Durham,Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette:I want to commend the Grand Forks

Gazette for their coverage on city coun-cil.

The detailed reporting done by Craig [Lindsay] is fantastic. I also really appreciate the chart that quickly shows the motions and how they voted.

We are all busy and don’t always have time to attend meetings, watch them online or read through the min-utes. Thank you Grand Forks Gazette for this awesome service.

This is local news at its best and this alone makes my subscription worth it!

Within a year, 50 members had joined and assets were over $400. Today, we are almost 9,000 members strong with more than $210 million dollars in assets providing a full range of competitive financial products and services and continually re-investing into our communities.

What would the Boundary be like if the credit union had never been born– or suddenly disappeared today? From the beginning, our job has beento make a way for regular people to access financing to help them livetheir dreams… originally for farmers and small business. We’ve stayed trueto our purpose, continuing in the tradition of the cooperative movement.

How do i express my interest to run in the election? If you are interested in becoming acandidate in the 2015 Board ofDirectors’ Election, please downloadthe Candidates’ Intro Kit which out-lines what is required of a Director interms of time and qualifications. Andplease email us at [email protected] express your interest in having amember of our Board Development& Nominations Committee contactyou. What is GfCU looking for in its prospective candidates?GFCU needs leaders who bring withthem a broad range of skills andattributes that strongly align withour values and that support andstrengthen the current Board’s ongo-ing commitment to implementingour strategic vision. did you know…?Credit unions, called by variousnames around the world, are mem-ber-owned, not-for-profit financialcooperatives that provide savings, credit and other financial services

to their members. Credit unionmembership is based on a commonbond, a linkage shared by saversand borrowers who belong to aspecific community, organization, reli-gion or place of employment. Creditunions pool their members’ savingsdeposits and shares to finance theirown loan portfolios rather than relyon outside capital. Members benefitfrom higher returns on savings, lowerrates on loans and fewer fees onaverage.Credit unions worldwide offer mem-bers from all walks of life much morethan financial services. They providemembers the chance to own theirown financial institution and helpthem create opportunities such asstarting small businesses, growingfarms, building family homes andeducating their children. Regardless of account size in the credit union, each member may run for the volunteer board of directors and cast a vote in elections. In some countries, members encounter their first taste of democratic decision making through their credit unions.* *WOCCU.org website excerpt

Letters to the editor

Editor, The Gazette:After discussion during three ses-

sions of the regular meeting of council, on Jan. 26 the council resolved to opt out of the Canada-European Union: Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and other trade agreements that were entered into by the provincial and federal governments without appropriate consultation, and respect of local government jurisdic-tion.

The current unratified text of CETA states: “Each party shall ensure that all necessary measures are taken in order to give effect to the provisions of this agreement, including their observance at all levels of government.” As such, there are no opt out provisions for sub-central levels of government.

Similar text exists in other trade agreements. So how seriously will such a resolution (and, by association, the Grand Forks City Council) be consid-ered by the B.C. and federal govern-ments, which are quite aware of the inclusive nature of trade agreements?

The resolution identifies the absence of appropriate consultation as a key reason for opting out. The CETA con-sultation process included town-hall meetings across Canada, participation by provincial government representa-tives at negotiation sessions, and in-volvement of sectoral advisory groups.

Was this sufficient? At what point does the law of diminishing returns apply?

It depends on whom one asks. Even

within our city council, as was evi-denced at the first council meeting dur-ing discussion of the five-year strategic plan, the means and extent of consulta-tion to be undertaken when addressing significant issues resulted in differing and sometimes conflicting opinions.

Trade agreements are intended to provide a net benefit to the signatory parties. While some sectors will benefit, others will maintain status quo, yet others may see a detrimental effect.

In its resolution to opt out of CETA, does city council speak for all sectors in Grand Forks that might be affected by CETA, if it is ratified? Was appropriate consultation with stakeholders under-taken? As stated by Danielle Klooster in the Nov. 5, 2014 issue of the Grand Forks Gazette, “[Council members] are ALWAYS a representative of the mu-nicipality.”

As the new city council grows into its role, this and other concerns, which will be tabled during the next four years, should be considered from the perspective of their relative importance to the conduct of city business.

Grand Forks is facing pressing issues—e.g., declining population with consequential reduced tax base; declin-ing property values; loss of key retail facilities; failing infrastructure—issues whose resolution falls primarily under local government jurisdiction. Should these issues not take precedence over those for which the local government has considerably less jurisdiction?

Chris Palmer, Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette:A few people who have written letters to

the Gazette are expressing some kind of impa-tience because of endless discussions regard-ing water meters.

They would be happy these discussions stopped finally and they will go ahead with their happy life. The problem is that it is not going to happen. It is only the beginning of our struggle.

At the moment these meters have been installed and turned on, they started to do a harm to us, our animals and the environment, and it is not going to get better, but worse.

It should be the opposite: there should be more discussions, protests, petitions up to the point when these health-damaging devices will be removed or the radio taken out and they will be wired. Only then we can stop talk-ing about them.

The international microwave radiation health safety level is 0.1 microwatt of constant exposure. In Grand Forks the meter readings are showing 300-plus microwatts in some areas, which is 3,000 times over the safety limit. In Vancouver in most areas the meter readings are

showing 30,000, 50,000 and in some over 200,000 times over the limit, day and night, all the time.

Do you think it is a joke? It all adds up, smart meters, Wi-Fi, cell phones, cell antennas, communication antennas and so on. Where is this country going to? How do you think? To a happy, worry-free future?

As for those who are worried about the water conservation, why are you not worried about a real danger to the environment and wa-ter—GMO, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers, chem trails and so on?

If you are worried about water go to the offices which allow the use of these deadly chemicals and do some protesting, go to those who manufacture them and protest there, go to these who use these chemicals and protest there, maybe it will help.

The previous council have had some kind of agenda—installing radiating water meters, as many as possible, and they were doing that to the last day of their office time.

Looks like the new council has taken a much better approach to that issue, and we should support them in that, not call them to step down.

Anatol Plasun, Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette:It’s sad what happened to the senior who

was assaulted with a baseball bat. He was the victim of a fellow with mental/emotional problems. We read about some major crimes that are in the headlines, all seeming to and claiming to have mental health problems.

There seems to be a lack of a sense of community, which allows people to share their concerns with one another. If I criticize you about something, or make a suggestion, it isn’t a put-down, it’s merely trying to be helpful.

We, our government, needs to set up programs that instead of criminalizing people, help them to sort out their problems. Yes this would cost a lot but it would be a lot less ex-pensive than prison. It would help individu-als to sort out their problems and avoid loss of control of their minds.

Social interaction is so important for every one’s mental health. That’s what a lot of loners out there need. It would make for a healthier and friendlier community.

PERSONAL FINANCESGetting things back UNDER CONTROL

RRSPsStart early, SAVE LOTS!

Invest in your retirement savings program now!

Drawing up a budget is the

fi rst step in getting out of

fi nancial diffi culty.

Living from one paycheque to another, never knowing the extent of your debt, and excessive use of credit cards are all situations that can cause serious problems. In other words, learning how to control your money is an absolutely essential step in getting out of fi nancial diffi culty.

There is only one real solution to taking control of your fi nancial situation and knowing exactly where you’re headed: a budget. That’s right, this good old method is still the only way to get yourself out of the red and into the black. Knowing how much money is coming in and how much money is going out every month allows you to make wiser decisions regarding your expenses. And when you know your limits, it is much easier to avoid falling further into debt.

A sheet of paper and a pencil is all you need in order to fi gure out the overall state of your income and expenses. On one side note all your sources of income: salary, bonuses, tips, government allowances, etc. On the other side, mark down all your expenses. This will include both the unavoidable (such as rent, heat, telephone, and transportation) and avoidable ones (cable TV, clothes, movie rentals, newspapers, gym membership). Subtract your expenses from your income, and now you know what you have left at the end of the month. Think about saving if you have a surplus. If there is a defi cit, ask yourself what expenses you can cut.

The Internet is full of sites offering useful budgeting tools for free. Worksheets, calculation sheets, and other tools can help you create a balanced budget. Just remember, though, that in order to gain control of a risky fi nancial situation you will have to be honest — no lying to yourself!

You can open and contribute to a registered retirement savings plan as soon as you have income to declare. An RRSP is the modern day piggy bank, a fi nancial tool that allows you

to accumulate savings at the same time as you reduce your taxable income.

The expression “time is money” takes on its full

meaning where RRSPs are concerned. The sooner you contribute, the more money you’ll

have when you retire. Many people mistakenly

believe that it’s better to reduce their debt before starting to save. However,

a much better strategy is to balance debt repayment and savings. This means that even if you are carrying a lot of debt, it is still a good idea to begin saving as soon as you start a full-time job.

Not all 25-year-olds are thinking about their retirement, but once they realize that the money they put into an RRSP is tax exempt until they make a withdrawal, and that it can even yield a profi t thanks to compound interest, then a long-term plan may not seem so irrelevant.

What’s more, if you decide you’d like to own your own house, you can use your RRSP savings as a down payment on a fi rst home. This program, called Home Buyers’ Plan (HBP), is very popular — since 1992, more than two million Canadians have become homeowners using the money they had saved in a registered retirement savings plan.

When you make an annual contribution to an RRSP, you are building a better future for yourself. So, be sure not to waste any more time!

Semi hits ice, jack-knifesOn Jan. 27 at 7:17 p.m., police responded to a

call about a semi truck jack-knifed on Highway 3 at Eholt Road near the rest area.

“The semi was reported to be blocking three lanes of traffic on the corner,” said Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison. “Members attended and found a Sutco Contracting tractor trailer in the eastbound lane jack-knifed with two empty trailers. They were blocking the eastbound lanes. The driver stated he was driving westbound when the truck encoun-tered black ice on the downgrade corner and was unable to maintain control.”

No other vehicles were involved. There were no injuries. Copper wire stolen

On Jan. 28 at 7:21 a.m., RCMP received a report of a copper wire theft from the contractor storage yard at FortisBC’s garage.

“Stolen from the compound were two 20lb cop-per reels, two 30lb copper hand coils and 30 lbs of (grade) two/zero wire,” said Harrison.

There are no suspects or witnesses at this time.Anyone with any information is urged to con-

tact the Grand Forks RCMP at 250-442-8288.Missing motor vehicle incident

On Jan. 29 at 4:29 p.m., police responded to a motor vehicle incident near the Paulson Bridge on Highway 3 reported by a B.C. Ambulance crew who were passing through the area.

“A black four-door car had gone off the road and into the ditch,” said Harrison. “When the po-lice arrived on scene there was no sign of the ac-cident or the vehicle. However, it appears the ve-hicle was later located in the Trail area.”

Harrison said Trail RCMP attended a similar accident that was likely the same one.Pedestrian struck by vehicle

On Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m., RCMP received a report of a pedestrian motor vehicle accident with minor injuries.

“A pedestrian was struck at the intersection of Fourth Street and Central Avenue in Grand Forks,” said Harrison. “Police attended and spoke with the driver and the pedestrian. It was determined that the driver was making a left turn onto Central as an oncoming vehicle had on its high beams.”

Harrison said the driver brushed against the pedestrian in the cross walk, who he couldn’t see, causing the pedestrian to fall to the ground.

“The pedestrian sustained very minor inju-ries,” Harrison added. “He said he felt a thump and was knocked to the ground by the vehicle. Im-pact speed was very slow and the driver stopped as soon as he nudged him.”

The pedestrian suffered a sore hip and leg and small scratch on his hand from falling to the ground. B.C. Ambulance attended and checked

out the pedestrian on the scene before releasing him.

The driver, a 58-year-old male from Grand Forks, was driving a 1992 Ford Ranger pick-up. The pedestrian was a 71-year-old male from Grand Forks. No charges were laid.DUI at the Lake

On Jan. 31 at 11:19 p.m., an RCMP constable observed a vehicle leaving the parking lot at the Christina Lake Community Hall and it appeared the driver may have been impaired; the constable pulled him over.

“The driver denied consuming any liquor; how-ever, the constable could smell liquor coming from him,” said Harrison. “At that point a demand was given and he provided a sample into the roadside screening device. As a result, it indicated a warm which resulted in a three-day driver’s licence suspension and his vehicle being impounded for three days as well.”

The individual is a 36-year-old male from Christina Lake.Break-in

On Feb. 1 at 10:27 a.m., RCMP received a report that some time between Jan. 29 and Feb. 1 some-one gained access (broke into) a home that was be-ing used as a shop.

“It appears that entry was gained by breaking a window,” said Harrison. “Stolen was a compres-sor, two drills, two brad nailers, two socket sets and a lap top computer.”

At this time police have no suspects and no wit-nesses. Anyone with information is urged to call Grand Forks RCMP at 250-442-8288.Single vehicle collision

On Feb. 1 at 10:30 a.m., RCMP received a com-plaint of a single vehicle collision on Highway 3 west of Grand Forks.

“The driver had already left the scene,” said Harrison. “He was taken to the hospital by a friend for a laceration on his forehead. The driver was traveling east on Highway 3 near Sleepy Hol-low Road when he lost control of the vehicle and went off the road to the left. Snow and slippery road conditions contributed to the crash.”

Damage to the vehicle, which was a blue 2008 Mazda B2300, was over $5,000. The driver was a 59-year-old male from Grand Forks. Stolen TV

On Feb. 1 at 1:11 p.m., RCMP received a com-plaint of a stolen television from Extra Foods in Grand Forks. “The suspects were arrested in the matter and the investigation is proceeding,” said Harrison. Arrested was a 34-year-old male from Grand Forks. Also involved, police believe, was a 33-year-old female, also from Grand Forks.

Literacy involves family

Doctor makes school call

Grand Forks Secondary (GFSS) band student Cara Mehmal (left) helps out Christina Lake Elemen-tary (CLES) students Emersyn Hagel-Seitz and Danica Hoff on Jan. 21 with making mbiras (a musical instrument of African origin). Mehmal and her other classmates travelled to Christina Lake to help their CLES buddies make the instruments out of popsicle sticks and bobby pins. The young students were then able to play their instruments for their high school buddies before they headed back to Grand Forks. Submitted photo

Dr. Sebastian found time between rounds to visit GFSS and talk to Terry Nuyten’s Science 12 class on Jan. 27. Sebastian talked to the students about how to become a medical practitioner and also answered all kinds of related questions from the students. After the presentation, Sebastian was awarded a genuine scary man figure from students Austin Trudeau (left) and Curtis Logan. Craig Lindsay photo

It was a fun-filled Family Literacy Day event at the Grand Forks and District Public Library on Saturday. The afternoon included crafts, activities and games, and featured a comedy show (for all ages!) by Lucas Myers. (Photo left) Lucas (right) enlisted the help of audience members to demonstrate how pictures tell a story—”the hunter takes spears to the water-ing hole to hunt antelope”—and how language formed. (Photo right) Yelena Churchill plays a game with a young Family Day event patron.Della Mallette photos

(From left) Dave McKinnon, Harry Sherstobitoff and Graham Watt enjoy Scotch and snacks at the Rotary Club Scotch Tasting event at gallery 2 Saturday night. About 70 people were on hand to sample several different bottles of single malt Scotch which ranged from 18-year-old Glendronach from Speyside to 12-year-old Royal Lochnager from Highland. The Scotches were accompanied with snacks provided by Twisted Forks Catering. The money raised from the Scotch Tasting event will go towards the spray park project at City Park, which is at about 81 per cent of the fundraising needed to start the project. Craig Lindsay photo

Le Vent du Nord is acknowledged as an influential force and key player in Quebec’s traditional folk music revival. The group has brilliantly connected Quebecois musi-cal tradition to a larger musical world and in doing so has turned lost traditions into new and intense dynamic performance. Just in time for the 2015-16 season, the band is releasing an eighth album and show, with catchy and engaging tunes played with unmistakable soul and spirit. Le Vent du Nord is performing at the GEM Theatre next Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available in advance at gallery 2, Thistle Pot, Pharmasave, and the GEM; and will also be available at the door. –leventdunord.com

Kootenay team unitesNelson hosted a two-day indoor soccer tour-

nament over the weekend that featured over 61 games and 200 players, attracting soccer enthu-siasts from Grand Forks, Cranbrook, Castlegar, Fernie, Kimberley and Invermere.

“We were bringing the east and west together, under one banner. This is a one-of-a-kind thing for the area, and for the whole Kootenays,” said Whitecaps regional head coach Brett Adams.

“A lot of people don’t see the work that’s done behind the scenes to make this happen. But the proof is in the pudding when you can get 200-plus players out for a weekend. It’s more than worth it to see the reactions of the players and the parents. They can see where we’re going as a soccer community in the Kootenays,” he said.

“It is really exciting to be able to do this and especially with the access to the Nelson soccer in-door facility,” he added.

During the tournament, players from U-10 to U-14 were mixed randomly together. The kids played alongside people from other communi-

ties, which was a team-bridging experience for them, Adams said.

“It’s a huge benefit for them to play with other players.”

He said 10-year-old Nelsonite Jalen Rushton was the standout performer, scoring 14 goals in the tournament.

Grand Forks’ 14-year-old Finn Dribney also had a spectacular performance, scoring seven goals in what Adams called a “really competitive tournament.”

In the older age groups, which played com-petitively, the Kootenay West Team 2 won the top spot, winning 4-1.

Adams said the most impressive performanc-es were by the goaltenders: Nelsonites Bella Guderyan, 15, and Hannah Quinn, 15; Trail resi-dent Paige Gattafoni, 16; and Invermere player Wasyn Rice, 16.

“In an indoor tournament the shots are com-ing at them left, right and centre. There’s a lot of pressure on them to be able to stand up to the amount of pressure they’re under.”

He said he was particularly impressed that Quinn and Guderyan, who just turned 15, held their own against the older players.

Adams said as the club gathers momentum, they’re going to start seeing big achievements in the next few years.

He added that the older boys had a great weekend as well, and Trail player Nolan Derosa played “an unbelievable technical game and stood out as a leader for the team.”

“The level of fit-ness, the level of un-derstanding of the game the boys dem-onstrated, was in-credible. There was no kick and rush, and they were really playing attractive soccer,” he said.

Adams said they’re now working with colleg-es and universities to place some of their more elite players, including Derosa.

The weekend was an excellent networking opportunity, he added. “This weekend we had parents from all over the Kootenays talking to each other, getting involved, intermingling. To put that on and collect all of us under one banner is remarkable, and long may it continue.”

Both the Grade 8 girls and senior girls teams from Grand Forks Secondary lost recently in Trail.

The Grade 8 Wolves had a close one, coming from down 10 to within two of J.L. Crowe. The Wolves had a chance to tie at the end but missed, eventually losing 24-22 despite eight points from Tara Makortoff.

The senior girls lost 58-28 against a quick and aggressive Crowe team. The senior Wolves found themselves down 17-2 in the first quarter after giving up several fast break baskets. How-ever, some strong defence and good ball move-ment put the Wolves within eight in the second quarter but the Crowe Hawks pulled ahead with their strong shooting and aggressive play.

“They stunned us early with their pressure defence and run-outs,” said coach Craig Lind-say. “We didn’t take care of the ball and had no defensive balance. No one was getting back on defence. Once we made some adjustments there,

we did much better.”J.L. Crowe ran a 3-2 zone, which GFSS had not

seen before.“We had been working primarily on our man-

to-man offence so we really weren’t prepared,” Lindsay said. “But I used a timeout and drew up a simple zone offence and the girls did quite well considering we hadn’t practiced it.”

Lindsay added that defensively the Wolves gave up far too many open shots and lay-ups.

“We’re going to be working a lot on close-outs next practice that’s for sure,” he said. “Trail is one of the best three point shooting teams we’ve seen and we just let them fire away.”

Lindsay did say the team rebounded quite well and when they had a chance to set up the press they were very effective.

Alyssa Makortoff led the senior Wolves with seven points, while Katrina Makortoff added six.

Next up for the senior team is a tournament in Midway on Feb. 6/7. The junior boys basketball team hosts a tournament this weekend at GFSS.

Oldtimers need goaliesFor anyone looking for a little exercise during

the week, the Oldtimers drop-in hockey league in Grand Forks is looking for goalies.

You don’t have to be Patrick Roy or Jacques Plante, you just have to be able to get to the Jack Goddard Memorial Arena in Grand Forks on Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 10:15 a.m.

The Monday and Wednesday sessions are age 65-plus, while the Tuesday and Thursdays are 55-plus. Goalies are not bound by age restrictions.

Media liaison Vern Walsh says they are look-ing for anyone male or female to help out be-

tween the pipes. Walsh said the groups gets anywhere from 10-15 for the older group and up to 20 or more with the Tuesday and Thursday group.

“It’s just about having fun and getting some exercise,” said Walsh. “It’s a good thing for us seniors. It’s good exercise.”

Walsh said the league has been around for about six years and has grown over the years. It’s actually not a league but a drop-in event. The league is run by Grand Forks and District Recre-ation (GFREC).

“It gives us old guys something to do,” he adds. “It’s good, healthy exercise.”

Anyone interested can contact GFREC at 250-442-2202.

Public meeting focuses on speckled dace

The speckled dace is a small min-now with an important role in the Kettle River. The species is relatively abundant here, but it is considered endangered because it is the only place in Canada where it occurs and it is isolated from American populations.

Now residents of the Boundary and Okanagan Region will have a chance to help the speckled dace and the overall health of the Kettle River.

As part of the Kettle River Watershed Management Plan, the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) has re-ceived funding from the Government of Canada’s National Conservation Plan and the Okanagan Chapter of Trout Un-limited Canada to restore speckled dace habitat near Beaverdell, the Christian Valley, and the upper Granby River.

The public, an-glers, landown-ers and others are invited to join the RDKB and project partners for a public meeting on Monday, Feb. 16 from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. at the Westbridge Community Hall. Golder Associates and Trout Un-limited Canada will share information on the importance of speckled dace and options for restoring their habitat, and the public will be able to sign up to help or provide ideas on stream stewardship in the Kettle River Watershed.

This project supports the efforts of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Province of British Columbia in devel-oping a recovery strategy for the speck-led dace. Some of the main threats are low river fl ows and siltation from road building, forestry and livestock access. According to Lesley Peterson, a biologist with Trout Unlimited Canada, “These

issues are also detrimental to rainbow trout which not only require cold, clean water but also healthy and functioning riparian areas.”

The team is currently identifying project sites and preparing information on sediment reduction and riparian habitat restoration options. Fieldwork and restoration activities are scheduled to start in late March, pending weather and site conditions.

The meeting was made possible by the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, the Government of Canada’s National Conservation Plan, the Okana-gan Chapter of Trout Unlimited Canada and Golder Associates. Refreshments will be provided. Contact Graham Watt ([email protected]; 250-442-4111) for more information, or visit kettleriver.ca.

Take the Saturday strutHave you gone north on Riv-

erside on Saturday mornings and noticed a large parade of pooches on the trail by the river? This is the

weekly dog walk that leaves from the medical clinic (75th Avenue and Second Street) at 10 a.m., rain or shine.

Originally started several years ago by local dog trainer Kathy No-vokshnoff as a means for her students to better socialize their dogs, the walks are now a regular, free, Saturday morning event open to anyone with a well-mannered canine companion.

Last weekend`s walk saw about a dozen dogs, from miniature schnauzers to massive mastiffs and everything in between. The two-legged walkers are an equally diverse group of various ages and gender.

The walk generally splits into subgroups of similar walking pace.

When asked, the con-sensus of the group was that it is a great way for both owners and dogs to get some exercise and a good opportunity to just socialize with others.

The walks generally last about one hour, and anyone with a friendly dog is welcome. For the safety of the dogs (and to abide bylaws), leashes are

required and, of course, responsible owners will pick up any dog waste (bag dispensers and trash cans are lo-cated on the trail).

For more informa-tion on the walks, please phone Kathy at 250-442-2653.

Malcolm John "Scotty" Scott, contractor, real estate broker, developer, sportsman, musician, aviator, bon vivant, prankster, devoted friend and mentor, died January 20 in Penticton, BC, after a long decline. He was 85.

A pilot while still in his teens, he ew crop dusters in Grand Forks, BC, in the 1940s, and many larger and ner planes for decades thereafter. He tried to enlist in the Canadian air force in the nal year of the Second World War, and was prevented from deployment only because a local recruiter recognized the underage 15-year-old. He was a crack shot and an excellent horseman, hunting widely through the hills above Grand Forks throughout his formative years.

His quick mind and physical stamina earned him a joint trade rating in both electrical and refrigeration. In 1953 while wiring a light from the top of a ladder at a Greenwood sawmill, he fell into a moving saw nearly amputating his left foot. He married his ancee, Mary Stooshino , while still in his hospital bed in Vancouver. Although doctors told him he might never walk again, he fought back through years of punishing rehab and multiple surgeries, regaining almost full use of his injured foot. He was an avid golfer, tennis player, curler, and skier for the rest of his life.

rough the 1960s and 70s, as managing partner of the Boundary group of companies he oversaw the electrical and mechanical subcontracts on three Columbia River Treaty dams, at numerous pulp-and-paper and sawmill operations, and in the mines and coal developments of the East Kootenay. In later years he became a realtor and real estate broker, a property developer in the Lower Mainland and southern Ontario, and a speculative investor never shy to try a long shot. He was a great friend and mentor to many younger men coming up behind, in both professional and fraternal organizations.

More than anything Malcolm was widely known and liked for his irrepressible sense of humour, his easy-going manner and ready jokes, and his love of a good party. He was a world-class sweet talker.

He was predeceased by his wife Lois Cooke; and by his parents Richard and Aida Irene Scott of Grand Forks, his brothers Nelson, Kenneth and Dale Scott, and his sister Joyce Scott Toewes. He is survived by his sister Norma Scott Evans of West Kelowna; by his rst wife Mary Stooshino Scott of Victoria and his second wife Joanne Liberon Farrell Scott of New South Wales, Australia; by his children Michael Allan Scott of Vancouver and Carmen Jean Scott (and husband Douglas Parsons) of Victoria; by his stepsons Paul Kelland Farrell (and children Meg and Piper), of New South Wales, Australia, and Ian Fletcher Farrell (and daughter Laura) of Toronto; and most especially by his beloved grand-daughter Hadley Brice Parsons of Victoria.

Malcolm led a vey active lifestyle and for years was a member of the Penticton Golf & Country Club, Penticton Curling Club, and Rotary International. He was a long-standing member of Harmony Lodge No. 37 A.F.&A.M. in Grand Forks, BC, as well as a member of Gizeh Shriners of BC & Yukon.

A celebration of Malcolm’s life and interment of his ashes will be held in the spring in Grand Forks.

Marthe Marchal (nee Molter)

Marthe Marchal, of Grand Forks, BC, died peacefully on Jan.

27, 2015 at Hardy View Lodge, age 86.

Marthe was born July 29, 1928 in France, and

came to Québec in 1951 with her husband François and daughter Mimi. The family moved to Courtenay, B.C. in 1964, and to Grand Forks in 1967.

She was predeceased by her husband François and son Antoine. She is survived by her brother Al-phonse Molter and her sister Marie Bellavance; by her daughters Mimi Marchal (David), Anne Marchal (late Marcel), Claire Radcliffe (Len), Françoise Carmen (late Marten), Brigitte McCabe and Isabelle Ryder (Eric); and by her sons Dominique (Evelyn), Paul, Jean (Kathy) and Pierre. She also has 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Marthe had a passion for supporting the poor in Central America, where she had two foster children. She travelled to Guatemala with CUSO and Nicara-gua with Development and Peace to help people in remote villages. She became chairperson for D&P in the Kamloops diocese, and continued to speak and travel in that capacity until she became affl icted by Alzheimer’s disease. She continued to enjoy working in her large garden and spending time with her family; her long daily walks were very important to her too.

The Marchal family would like to thank the staff at Hardy View for the wonderful care they provided for Marthe, and for their kindness and thoughtfulness over the last few weeks.

A funeral Mass was held on Friday, January 30, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

In lieu of fl owers, please donate to Doctors With-out Borders or to Development and Peace.

Gregory (George) Kastruko

January 30, 1939 - January 28, 2015

George was born in Trail, B.C., to parents George

and Mary Kastrukoff. The family moved to Grand

Forks when George was at a young age. He spent his years growing up in Grand Forks working on the family farm, until he started his own trucking business. George loved the driving and trucking was his passion. He also enjoyed the outdoors – camping, fi shing, gardening, and anything else outside. He was also an amazing cook. He had many friends and he loved his family very much. He was a kind and gentle man and would have done anything to help anybody, and did even till his fi nal days at the Silver Kettle.

In 1960 he met his wife-to-be, Anne, and they married in 1963. They stayed in Grand Forks to raise their family.

George is survived by his life-long partner Anne; his son James (Marcella) Kastrukoff; his daughter Bonnie (Les); two granddaughters, Jasmine and Sa-mantha Starchuk; and his sister Elaine Verishine and his nephew Merle (Tanya) Verishine of Kelowna, B.C. He also has many cousins and friends and he will be sadly missed.

You have gone to be with your creator a place where you will be in peace.

You have fi nished your time on this earth, but you will never be forgotten.

You will live on in the hearts and souls of people you have touched throughout your life.

May you Rest in Peace.Cremation has taken place. There will

be no service by George’s request.

David Allan Johnson

September 22, 1928 - January 23, 2015Al Johnson passed away

in Grand Forks, B.C, at 86 years young of natural causes. Born and raised in Rosemont,

Quebec where he met and married the love of his life Ruth Thomson (1927- 2003). They had four amazing gifted and talented daughters (lol) who loved and adored them both. He moved the family to Vancou-ver, B.C. in 1976 after a fi ve year pit stop in Mississau-ga, Ont. He moved to Grand Forks in 2012 a place he discovered and fell in love with on one of his RV trips.

He will sadly be missed by daughters – Karen, Debbie (Claudio), Nancy, Patti (Bruce), grandchildren Melanie, Tony (Dee), Kelly and great-grandson James and six granddogs and six great-granddogs.

He had a passion for RV travelling, woodwork-ing, home renovations and good food. Though he lived in a world of silence he treated the world like they were the ones who were hard of hearing. His boisterous laughter and teasing manner will be greatly missed by all.

Thank you to all the staff at Ivy House for your loving care and support.

No service by Al’s request, instead have an ice cream or a Scotch in his honour.

Choir of African orphans performsWatoto is thrilled to in-

troduce a brand new pro-duction entitled Oh What Love that will be performed in venues across Canada from January to July 2015. Through this dynamic wor-ship experience, the Watoto Children’s Choir, who were once orphans, share their journeys to redemption and dem-onstrate that God desires to be a loving father to all mankind.

Oh What Love will be presented in Grand Forks on Thursday, Feb. 12, at Gospel Chapel (7048 Donaldson Drive) at 7:00 p.m. The full tour schedule can be viewed online atwatoto.com/the-choir/see-the-choir.

“After losing my parents I felt alone, with no one to love me. Now I know that God is my father. He loves and cares for me. As I travel on the choir, I am going to show people that God loves them too,” says six-year-old Jack-ie Nakku.

Gary Skinner, Wat-o to founder says, “God’s heart for the marginalized is not just to see individuals rescued, but rather to see them thrive as their lives are transformed. The stories of the chil-dren are real and rep-resent thousands who are experiencing this transformation.”

Based on the Bible verse, 1 John 3:1, “See what kind of love the father has given us, that we should be called children of God, and so we are,” pre-pare for a unique wor-ship experience that celebrates the urban African landscape and brings out the unique personalities of the children.

The production is indicative of emerg-ing, modern Africa—a continent coming out of ruin and exploring its true identity. Africa is coming of age and so are her people. Her children and young adults are the key to the future.

“Through their unique personalities, the children now com-municate and share the sense of belong-ing they found in God their father,” says James Skinner, cre-ative director of Wato-to Children’s Choir. “Like Africa, the chil-dren are representa-tive of many others who are beginning to understand their iden-tity in Christ and what He has called them to be. They know that they belong to a fam-ily of believers.”

Since 1994, Watoto Children’s Choirs have travelled all over the world shar-ing the plight of Africa’s orphaned and vulnerable. Each of the chil-dren in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both of their parents but they have been res-cued and now live in a Watoto village.

“What an extraordinary ex-perience it is to host the Watoto Children’s Choir. I mean, it lights up the place to see these beautiful kids, and when you hear their story, you think of all God has done—where they have come from, to the transformation that has hap-

pened in their lives. I would strongly recommend that you welcome the choir. They’re only going to bless you and the people will love it,” says Bri-an Houston, senior pastor of Hillsong Church.
