Presentation Hutton Elementary teachers

Tammy Jacobs and Keira Angus spoke to the board of trustees at the regular board meeting oof School District 51 on Feb. 9 to talk about a new and exciting method for teach-ers to communicate with parents.

The pair have began to use a phone/tablet app called Fresh-Grade to show weekly updates of students’ progress with their par-ents. Both say it’s a great way to send a “snapshot” of a child’s day at school so parents can easily dis-cuss how the child’s day went.

Kevin Argue, SD51 superinten-dent of schools, said that there are a few other teachers in the district using the app but Jacobs and Angus are the most experienced.

“It’s a choice they’re making to use it,” he said. “It can be used just to communicate to parents; it can be used to just put your marks in and those can be shared with parents; and it can be used as a portfolio, where a student is videoed reading at their level, for example, and that is shared with the parent. It gets posted like on Facebook but only the parent can see it.”

Syrian refugees The school board received a let-

ter from Benjamin Jepsen regarding a committee he is on that is work-ing toward getting a Syrian refugee family to Grand Forks. Jepsen said it would be a massive endearvour and would take the entire commu-nity to get behind it. He added that the committee is looking at different options to get one or more families to Grand Forks.

Argue said that at this point, the group is just looking at options re-garding bringing a Syrian refugee family but nothing is confirmed yet that there will be. “We have some resources from the Ministry of Edu-cation on how to best do this,” he said. Amended budget bylaw

The board unanimously passed final reading of the Amended An-nual Budget Bylaw. Total operat-ing revenue for SD51 for the year ending June 30, 2016 is $15,456,221 with most coming from provincial grants from the Ministry of Educa-tion ($15,235,540).

The total expenses in the budget are $15,798,221 with $12,091,562

coming from instruction. Video surveillance

The board of trustees voted in fa-vour of adopting a policy to allow for video surveillance on the exte-rior of school district properties for the reason of deterring acts of van-dalism, crime, and inappropriate behaviour, and to enhance student safety. Public use of school facilities

The board approved and ad-opted policy No. 2060 - Public Use of School Facilities. The policy ap-plies to all rentals of school district facilities except those for which the school board has entered into a sep-arate joint use agreement.

The policy states that: 1. The school board’s first consideration for school facilities is to meet the needs of students and school programs…; 2. The board agrees, however, that school facilities should be used as extensively as possible by com-munity/public organizations and other groups when not required for district educational programs. Pref-erence will be given to activities for educational, cultural or recreational value and to children’s groups. The policy also includes recommenda-tions for schedule of fees and priori-ties for use.

COUNCIL BRIEFS By Craig Lindsay

App a new communication tool

This year is shaping up to be a fantastic year for the City of Grand Forks, said Mayor Frank Konrad after hearing the federal government’s announcement that Grand Forks is one of 57 communities across Canada to receive Gas Tax Strategic Priorities funding.

The city submitted an application for Performance Mea-surement and Reporting Framework for Sustainable Service Delivery and is receiving $195,000, or 100 per cent, of the project costs.

In 2015 the city received a total of $374,166 in grants for projects such as airport beacon upgrades, Rotary Tot Lot up-grades and an ultra violet light system for waste water dis-infection.

The city receives an annual Small Communities Operating grant which added another $501,925 to grant money received in 2015.

Konrad said, “Council is proud of the work that was ac-complished in 2015 and is already focused on several projects for 2016. The city got off to a great start with a super fun and well attended Family Day event and I believe this, along with just over $1 million in grant money, has set us up for success. We are excited to continue the year with some really great projects for this community.”

He noted that in 2015, city land sales totalled $120,000 and to date in 2016 there is significant development interest in the community. He added, “Grand Forks has so much to offer, with affordable housing and cost of living, employment and business opportunities and great schools and amenities. We think that all the external marketing that the city has done is paying off and Grand Forks is on the radar of a lot of people who are looking to relocate.”

The Rock Creek/West-bridge Fire Needs Commit-tee continues to meet and is working to identify and ad-dress needs of those affected by last summer’s wildfire.

In the fall, the committee used the start of its fund to build a number of outbuild-ings for those in the fire zone (some of which will be com-pleted in the spring). We have also continued to col-laborate with the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and

other organizations offering help within our community.

There has been approxi-mately $118,000 donated so far. We will be closing the account as of March 31 in order to complete the allo-cation of funds raised. Any-thing received following that date will be forwarded to the Kettle River Lions Club for dispersal.

If you have any questions, comments, or would like to draw our attention to a par-ticular need, please contact us through Vicki Gee at 250-446-2042.

It’s good to see a local group trying to bring a Syrian refugee family to Grand Forks. There are still plenty of hoops to jump through but the group is already out meeting with community organizations in hopes of joining forces. It will definitely be an effort that needs many, many people and many organizations working together.

It wasn’t long ago that Justin Trudeau used the Syrian refugee crisis as one of his many promises during the ultimately success-ful campaign for prime minister. Although Canada hasn’t quite been able to deliver on bringing in the thousands (10,000) of Syr-ians originally promised, there have been many coming in. Since last August, 2,374 Syrians have come to Canada fleeing civil war.

It will take a village to raise a family. They will likely need language training (ESL), job training, medical and dental aid and help adapting to a different way of life. Many years ago, the area was mostly accommodating to waves of Russian (Doukhobor) immigrants who have helped shape the community. Cultural di-versity offers so much from learning about other countries, such as the chance to try different types of food, exploring cultural learning such as dance and sport, and more.

There will be many challenges. It’s not cheap and there are still many who are against bringing in refugees for a number of rea-sons. Fortunately, there are many that do support bringing in a family and believe that helping people who have lived through a horrible situation is worth the effort. That’s something that most everyone can get behind.

Welcoming refugees

HOW TO REACH US

This column has officially gone to the dogs

I’m starting this week’s col-umn with a few of the words and phrases that annoy me. English is full of interesting words and phrases but some lingo comes and goes. Words like hipster and bro weren’t part of the lexicon until 10 or 20 years ago. Before that it was all groovy and dude. These words come and go. Some hand on a little longer. Some words and phrases I think should be retired are ‘moving forward.’ This is just a tired old cliche that someone uses when they want to sound important. ‘At the end of the day’ is another phrase I’ve heard when interviewing that really means nothing. You can combine the two and come up with ‘At the end of the day we’re moving forward.’ You’ve said

nothing but it sounds like some-thing.

Putting hashtag before every-thing on social media is a trend which is thankfully drying up. I realize it’s a necessity on Twitter to drive people to your tweets. #grandforksgazette #trending-news #municipalelection. That makes sense but then people started adding to Facebook posts and texts and whatever else. #wokeup #hadbreakfast #best-cerealever #pleasestop #notcool-anymore.

‘Fur babies’ is another phrase that has popped up in recent years and drives me batty. I get it that you love your animals. We all do. They’re kind of like part of the family. But c’mon the key is ‘like’ as in they’re not. We love our animals and we get sad when they get sick and die but it hap-pens. We mourn for a few days and then get a new pet. That may sound cold but the point is the phrase annoys me. It’s all part of anthropormizing pets (making

them human-like). It has to stop. Just to show I’m not a com-

pletely heartless monster I’ll tell a tale of family pets. My mom was looking for a little company at her house so she enquired into adopting a shelter dog. Being a senior, she wanted an older, smaller dog that wouldn’t be a big burden. She was able to fos-ter a nine-year-old Maltese dog whose owner sadly had a stroke and was unable to care for it. The dog’s name is Alby, which is re-ally L.B., which stands for Little Bastard. Despite the name, the little pooch is actually very well behaved.

Alby is not a morning dog, though. Until about noon he will be snoozing and basically out of action. But just after noon he gets hit with a surge of energy and will run around like a hyperac-tive puppy. Soon enough he will tire out and go back to snoozing, however.

The first time I met Alby was when I was visiting mom just

before Christmas. I came out to sit in the big chair and watch TV with mom. Low and behold Alby had taken over the guest chair. My mom even had blan-kets and towels all over the chair to protect it from dog hair. While I wasn’t happy. I like that chair. Mom suggested bringing in an-other chair but I refused to be second fiddle to a dog. So I called Alby. Nothing. I tried squeezing one of his chew toys to no avail. Finally I had to pick the dog up and physically move him out of the chair. I was a little worried not knowing whether he would bite me or pee on me or what-ever dogs do. With the dog on the floor I quickly took control of the chair. And then Alby jumped on my lap. I guess he wasn’t too upset.

So anyways, it turns out Alby is a pretty good dog. A great fit for my mom. She is more active chasing him around but he isn’t too over bearing.

Too many issues over proposal

Which is biggest threat?

Don’t hide away seniors

Time to change forests chant

An open letter, in part, to MLA Linda Larson

I am writing this letter to express my opposition to the proposed seniors’ housing project on the corner of the only piece of wild lakeshore left at Christina Lake.

This beautiful piece of land is easily accessible for nature lovers and walkers of all ages.

It is the home of a beaver dam, and a great spot to watch ducks, geese, otters, eagles, swans and other wildlife. Bear are often in the park in the summer months. Thought-ful consideration has gone into creating several walking trails along the waterfront and curling through the marsh to provide amazing views. Carefully placed benches and picnic tables encourage people to linger.

The Christina Lake Stew-ardship Society has an ac-tive role in this park and is attempting to replant native species along the waterfront. Now this proposal will change a corner of our park into a se-niors complex and parking lot.

At a recent community meeting, many of us showed up to voice concerns for the im-pact on wildlife and the public

who use this park. Locals are concerned that their trail access will be compromised if the facility’s parking lot encroaches on the current public park-ing area at the trail head. This concern was brushed aside in a comment that the trail head could be moved. To move the trail head further impacts the environment.

Perhaps Christina Lake is in need of seniors’ housing, but a seniors’ manufactured home park currently exists and is un-derused, with empty lots and numerous homes sitting empty on the real estate market for long periods of time.

The new facility will be intended for 55+, but it will be zoned multi-family. It is not an assisted living facility, but rather waterfront condomini-ums.

There is concern that the seniors’ designation could change if seniors can’t afford to live there and units sit vacant.

It is intended the complex will share a living water treat-ment facility (using live plants) that currently exists and is used by the Christina Lake Welcome Centre. The centre has a restaurant and a number of toilets. At the recent com-

munity meeting, we heard that the treatment facility, designed for use by 25-30 people, will need to be expanded to meet the needs of the seniors’ centre, at a yet-to-be-determined cost.

This proposed seniors’ centre is near a very busy high-way with businesses nearby. Residents will have to cross the highway to access a grocery, post office, drug store, medical offices and new retail space. There is no crosswalk and no sidewalks to any of these amenities.

Another concern that came up at the latest meeting regard-ing this center involves pro-posed businesses being added to the housing complex, to off-set expenses. A children’s day-care facility, wellness centre and another office/retail space were ideas offered up. This drew con-cern because we already have local people providing some of these same services.

I am not against a seniors’ centre, but there are too many issues around, the impact on wildlife, the sewage treatment and thoughtful access to our last piece of wild lake left.

Tara Werner, Christina Lake

Editor, The Gazette:Which is our biggest threat?

ISIS or ISDS?As I learn more about the Trans

Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Canadian European Trade Agree-ment (CETA), I really wonder which is the most serious, long-term threat to our country,

ISIS (aka the Islamic State) or ISDS (Investor-State Dispute Settlement).

The ISDS is an integral part of trade agreements. It is a dispute resolution mechanism in which an investor (generally a large corporation) can pursue a finan-cial settlement if it feels that the

country it is attempting to invest in has caused it to lose profit or potentially lose profit.

For example, a Calgary-based company has filed a $15 billion NAFTA challenge against the United States after U.S. President Obama rejected the KeystoneXL pipeline. It does not matter that part of Mr. Obama’s reasoning was because of climate change policy decisions.

Another example is that Cana-da has been subject to 35 NAFTA claims, with 63 per cent of them challenging environmental pro-tection or resource management

Editor, The Gazette:2011 may have been the Year

of the Forest, but as with the Year of the Child or the Year of the Soil, unless it is imple-mented, it is a pretty worthless concept, except for the stamps it evokes.

Likewise it may be time to change the B.C. “Forests Forever” chant, or the “Splen-dour Without Diminishment” slogan.

A walk in one of the next three watersheds targeted here

in the Grand Forks area (Lynch, Miller and Hornet Creek) il-luminates just this. Up in that silence, in the snow-laden mys-tery of the still young forest, in the community of creatures, trees and plants, one wonders: is raping this watershed for chips worth the dollar? Can a forest thus laid to waste be even brought back in times of uncertain climate?

Can we afford to take the water-holding capacity that are trees from the mountains

with summers like last year’s? It takes all those trees, not just 15 feet of protective barrier to bring the water together in the creek.

What God-forsaken dollar business have we got, invading watersheds that life depends on? Creating jobs in a com-munity is one thing, enriching shareholders somewhere else is unacceptable.

Angelica Herlihy,Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette:I am pleased to respond to

letters from Melissa Shaw and Jill Gresley-Jones who are taking an interest in the seniors’ housing project at Christina Lake.

Volunteers have been work-ing on this, examining alternate sites, impacts on the environment and on community life for several years now. I am a senior, hoping to stay here when I no longer can manage in my home. I don’t want to have to move back to Alberta or to another town here. I want to be near the post office, grocery store, doctor’s office etc.

At this site one only has to cross the highway once. All other sites require us to cross three times. You go look.

So I have attended several information meetings at the com-munity hall, the Homecoming where maps and descriptions were given and the excellent meeting right outside at the pro-posed site last summer—it was an eye opener, and because of that I am surprised at your descrip-tions.

I walked down Kimura Road to that location. There’s a big yellow sign there by some really scrubby looking land (not much land either) which apparently was

an old contaminated site from sawmill days. It looks awful.

It is not on the lake or the creek (where you are not apparently al-lowed to build anyway). Nobody I know has seen wildlife there….you’ll see those further on. The trails and benches you described are also not at this location. In its present state it’s actually kind of crappy. Try to get out to see for yourself and I’m sure you will feel more positive about it.

I’m sure you would like to see us able to walk over to the trails, perhaps have a coffee or lunch at the Welcome Centre and continue to enjoy those ameni-ties you already mention. If this was your parents, would you not want them to have the same opportunities this site offers? You may also want to be there one day too. Please don’t hide away our seniors and loved ones.

It is good that you care about what is happening and I do hope you have no more family emer-gencies that keep you away from information meetings. We are all working together to make a better community and the more posi-tive we are, the better for all our projects will turn out.

measures. As the most-sued developed country in the world, Canada faces $2.6 bil-lion in ISDS claims.

One of the scary things about these settlements is that they are not settled in normal courts of law, but by indepen-dent tribunals that for some reason have power above our courts. On the contrary, there seems to be little that govern-ments are able to do when a foreign corporation does major damage to the environment and leaves it for the govern-ment of that country to pay for

the resulting cleanup.Because of the huge impli-

cations these settlements can result in, government policy-making first must determine if it has implications in regard to an ISDS challenge and not necessarily in what are the best interests of the country.

Do you recall that last October, then Prime Minister Harper offered the dairy farm-ers of Canada $4.2 billion to offset the negative impacts of the TPP? And that’s only the dairy farmers! This is not my idea of democracy. Our sover-

eignty is being undermined, and has been in some cases already, by these often unfair, lop-sided trade agreements that are negotiated in secret. And once signed, are in force for decades.

I believe that the threat of ISIS is serious, and needs to be addressed, but the threat that we are under from the ISDS portions of these trade agreements will have a more profound and lasting impact than will ISIS.

Editor, The Gazette:What in the world is going

on with this city council? We are mad as hell that they

are suing a councilor, and we have to pay for it from our taxes. It’s ridiculous. They don’t respect us residents at all. They are up to something, and it’s not good.

Councilor Butler had a yard business and gave that up, then did some yard work after. So what? What does that have to do with water meters anyways? Why get lawyers in-volved and the supreme court? This is just nuts.

What, Councilor Krog

doesn’t use water in his cater-ing business? What, none of the councilors sell food on city-owned property?

This is a small town, used to be friendly, now the city is suing one of its residents, a councilor, who had more votes than any of the other council-ors still there. The city is doing this. Can you believe it? What kind of example does that set for our kids and grandkids? It’s embarrassing.

Do they want some sort of revenge maybe? Get her out of council so they won’t have to hear any more objections to their “plans”? She is speaking

for many people in this town.Grand Forks has never

seen anything like this. This is outrageous. Do they think the taxpayers would really sup-port such garbage?

How much will this cost us? $100,000? More? Will they tell us? I doubt it.

We will never, ever forget what is being done here. And we won’t let this bunch of councilors ever, ever forget it either. They might as well just resign now and save everyone a lot of trouble.

THE

ANTHONY

REALTOR S®

February 15, 2016, marks the begin-ning of Chamber of Commerce Week, an opportunity for B.C.’s more than 125 Chambers of Commerce to showcase their hard work on behalf of businesses across the province.

This year, Chambers are celebrating the theme of “Empowering B.C. busi-nesses” – a theme that highlights how Chambers strive to empower and grow each business in their community.

Every day, Chambers actively strength-en local businesses through network-ing events, mentorship opportunities, professional development activities and other unique programming. Whether hosting events and business awards, supporting young entrepreneurs through mentorship programs, providing community-tai-lored support such as hospitality training in tourism communities, or organizing unique travel experiences for companies interested in learning more about different international markets, Chambers are sharply focused on empowering each and every member business to succeed.

Simultaneously, the Chamber network – B.C.’s largest business organization – is advocating for policy changes to further drive local businesses’ success.

Right now, for example, B.C.’s Chambers are leading efforts to advocate that the provincial government maintain a low tax rate for credit unions, which provide a key source of local business financ-ing for communities right across B.C. This is significant because for 44 communities in B.C., there are no alternative lenders. Keeping that credit union tax rate low is criti-cal to seeing sufficient dollars flow into community businesses, both to launch start-ups and to enable established businesses to secure growth financing.

Chambers are also leading efforts to establish permanent inter-munic-

ipal business licenses. These licenses provide business owners with the geographic flexibility that many need, particularly in areas such as the construction trades. Right now, inter-munic-ipal business licenses are moving from a pilot project to a permanent fixture in four Lower Mainland communities; the Chamber network hopes to further build on this success, with a vision of one day having a single cross-B.C. business license.

These are just two positive changes that the Chamber network is leading for B.C. busi-nesses. Among many areas of impact, B.C.’s Chambers have been a leading voice:

• encouraging balanced budgets at all levels of government;• calling for a made-in-B.C. value-added tax to support businesses in investing in their own

growth; • calling for solutions to B.C.’s skills gap; and• encouraging municipalities to actively support local economic development.

All of these policy pushes, together with Chambers’ local efforts, empower B.C.’s busi-nesses and drive British Columbians’ success.

So as B.C. celebrates Chamber Week, don’t miss the opportunity to swing by your local Chamber, join in on some Chamber Week events, and celebrate the many ways that B.C.’s Chambers empower local businesses and strengthen our communities.

Message from the

Boundary Country Regional Chamber

On behalf of the Board of Directors and myself, welcome to the Boundary Country Region-al Chamber of Commerce.

We are a new Chamber that looks to advance our member’s growth successes and provide increased opportunities for membership. As a member based organization the Chamber’s role is significant and its responsibility substantial.

Many new opportunities will be presented in this upcoming year and as the world continu-ally changes around us we will need to ensure we are staying on track. In January we held our strategic planning session where we reset our focus and developed our goals for the next 1 to 3 years.

2016 we will celebrate our past successes by continuing our Business after Business Open Houses, e-blasts & newsletters, social media, advertising, marketing & networking opportuni-ties, along with the many benefits of being a BC Chamber of Commerce member. BCRCC has also starting a new Shop Local program in 2016, encouraging Member-to Member discount/benefits within the Boundary.

BCRCC AGM is March 10, 2016. We are calling for Board Directors to represent the Bound-ary; Beaverdell, Bridesville, Christina Lake, Grand Forks, Greenwood, Midway, Rock Creek and Westbridge. 9 Directors in total, nomination will be accepted from the floor. New Member welcome!

BCRCC will be engaged in roundtable discussions, March 17, 2016. We will be hosting our first discussion, with Tourism being the topic. BCRCC looks forward to hosting more through-out the Boundary with groups such as big & small industry, business, merchants, community events and economic growth. We are the voice of business, a community advocate, connec-tor and communicator for local, provincial and federal issues on behalf of our members.

This will be an incredible year building on new & old relationships, adding events to include community Movies in the Park, a BCRCC Golf Tournament October 1, 2016, updating our website to include a better business directory and calendar of events. We are committed to providing value and meeting the needs of our membership.

I encourage you to take the time to see how you can benefit from the Chamber, get involved, engage in Chamber events, Business after Business Open Houses, committee & roundtable discussions. The greater your involvement, the greater the return will be on your investment.

I welcome your ideas, comments, suggestions and thank you for your interest and contin-ued support. We wouldn’t be an organization and couldn’t grow without you. If you’d like more information on the Chamber, Chamber Programs or participate in Roundtable Discus-sions, please contact myself. BCRCC looks forward to working with Business, Tourism and Events, growing our investment in the Boundary.

When contacted by the Gazette, Tubrett had no comment.

Erin Perkins, a parent with a child in the junior program, said all the par-ents were surprised with the turn of events. She did say they have been told they will receive a full re-fund.

“We got an email out of the blue,” she said. “As a parent I didn’t even see it coming. We didn’t know there was a problem. Di-ana is an amazing coach. We love her as parents and she has a lot of support. We hope they can straight-

en this up for next year. They’re going to reimburse all our money which is great but we’d rather have our kids skating on the ice. It’s kind of sad.”

A representative from the Grand Forks Figure Skating Club did confi rm the coach had left and that the board made the deci-sion to disband the club. They wouldn’t speak any further stating that any dis-cussions held by the board were in-camera (off the re-cord).

“I’m sure none of the de-cisions were taken lightly,” said Perkins. “The parents

are pretty upset about this whole thing. Diana is a ex-ceptional coach. I saw mas-sive amounts of improve-ment in my son as a result of her teaching. He loves skating. He was pretty upset after fi nding out he couldn’t skate anymore.”

GFREC has decided to host toonie public skating sesssions on Monday, Tues-day, Wednesday and Thurs-day afternoons from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., which all the skaters are welcome to come out to Jack Goddard Memorial Arena and work on their skating.

The West Kootenay Community TEETH Clinic has won a big award in an online contest.

The clinic, which provides dental care for low income residents, is locat-ed in Nelson but serves the entire West Kootenay and Boundary area including Grand Forks and Christina Lake. The clinic won the grand prize of $50,000 in a province-wide contest sponsered by Pacifi c Blue Cross.

Eric Ramsden, co-chair of the TEETH Clinic board, said the clinic fi rst opened in 2014. Ramsden said the clinic of-fers an opportunity for low income residents in the area (earning less than $30,000) to receive dental care at a dis-counted rate. “We have a registration process in our communities. We need to confi rm residency and income. We of-fer pretty much a full suite of services. Basically it’s 60 per cent of the standard costing. We also provide opportunities for dentures.”

Ramsden said the board was very pleased to hear about winning the top prize in Pacifi c Blue Cross’ Share the Care contest on Jan. 28. The TEETH

Clinic did already receive some grant aid from Pacifi c Blue Cross to help with start up costs back in 2014.

“As part of their celebration of their 75th anniversary they gave away $75,000 with their ‘Share the Care’ con-test,” said Ramsden. “We were one of the groups invited to apply. What we did was produce a video speaking of the services we provide and the value to the community. People could then vote for the video and hence the service they liked best and we came fi rst in that process.”

Ramsden said the board has already begun the process of looking into what to do with the prize money. “What we said on the video is that we would like to have another satellite clinic in another community so they wouldn’t all have to travel to Nelson,” he said. “Right now we’re in the process of reaching out to the other professionals in the West Koo-

tenay Boundary to see how they might participate in that.”

The low cost dental clinic currently has a paid staff of four dentists, 10 den-tal hygienists, 13 certifi ed dental as-sistants and fi ve receptionists. “These staff, along with the multitude of volun-teers, has provided 430 appointments to members of our communities over this past year,” said Ramsden.

“There is quite a need. As we know, dental costs can be quite expensive. The thing about dental health, the health of your gums and teeth can affect your overall health. It can also affect other things such as how we feel about our-selves. People have trouble looking for work sometimes if their teeth are bad.”

Anyone interesting in using the clin-ic can visit the website of Community First Health Co-op at healthco-op.ca or call local rep Natasha Kellet at 250-443-3155.

Trio plan derbyA new event is set to take Grand

Forks by storm this summer. A couple of local residents are orga-nizing a demolition derby for Sat-urday, June 25 out at Ace’s Pit Stop just past Kootenay Car Care east of Grand Forks on Highway 3. The main organizers, Wes Tetlock, Chris Fuhs and Jason McIver, are hoping to bring a family-friendly fun derby to town with lots of activities for people of all ages.

“We want to get a lot of people out,” said Tetlock. For safety rea-sons, the event will be dog and al-cohol-free.

“We’re going to have food ven-dors, a play area for kids, and, of course, the demolition derby itself,” said Fuhs. “We’ll probably start the derby itself at around 11 a.m or noon.”

The organizers are awaiting ap-proval from the city before moving forward. Once they get the appro-priate permits, they will be register-ing drivers.

“We need at least 12 cars regis-tered,” said Fuhs. “If we get more we’ll have multiple heats.”

Tetlock said they’ve already put the word out they are organizing the derby and looking for drivers. “We’ve put the rules on our web-site,” he said. “Safety is our number one concern. We want to make it safe for the drivers and spectators. All the windows are taken out of all cars. All the anti-freeze is drained so there are no contaminants going into the ground. “

Tetlock explained that a demoli-tion derby is when you have 10-12 cars in a ring and they basically smash into each other until there is only one car is running.

“We’ll also have a stick in the middle of the ring and the first car to hit it will get a prize,” said Tet-lock. “We’ll have a lot of stuff to give away.”

McIver said that the organiz-ers welcome anyone who wants to join as long as they have a vehicle. He said they’ve gone to the RDKB about getting old derelict vehicles from the regional district for the derby. “As long as they run,” he said.

Fuhs said they expect that the de-molition derby will attract a number of out-of-town visitors which will help bolster local businesses as well as motels and campsites. “Creston has had 3,000 people at their derby,” he said. “When we heard that we thought, why not us?”

Tetlock said that the Creston de-molition derby is the closest one. He said they used to have one in Green-wood as well. “One of the chal-lenges is making sure we get city approval,” he said. “We’ve already got the application in. We won’t put out the registrations for drivers un-til that is approved.”

The derby will also need a small army of volunteers to make sure everything runs smooth. “We’ve al-ready got over a dozen volunteers,” said McIver. “The response on so-cial media has been very promising. We’ve got 600 people on the website wanting to come.”

Among the more interesting prizes is a door prize raffle for a derby car. “The winner will get the chance to use the car in the ‘main event’,” said Fuhs. “We’re also looking at having a ladies division (powder puff) and possibly a divi-sion for trucks.”

The demolition derby is non-profit and is a fundraiser for the lo-cal food bank. The friends say they are putting on the derby for the fun of it. “It’s a great community activ-ity,” said Tetlock. “There’s not many activities I can take my whole fam-ily too.”

The organizers are hoping that the demolition derby will become an annual event and expand to eventually include live bands, lawnmower races, and more.

Jason McIver, Wes Tetlock and Chris Fuhs are hoping to bring a demolition derby to Grand Forks this summer out at Ace’s Pit Stop. Craig Lindsay photo

Fall fair committee busyYes, it’s true, spring is in the

air! But so is the Grand Forks and District Fall Fair.

Have you noticed that the seed racks have been up in the stores, enticing those of us who must plant something in the spring to stop and look and dream? Some of us received our first seed catalogues be-fore Christmas, and have en-visioned the amazing gardens we will have, brought on by the tantalizing descriptions of new

and better varieties of toma-toes, corn, peppers, etc.

For those of us who enjoy the fruits of our labours, and don’t mind a little friendly competition with our friends and neighbours who also like to garden, we like to think that we will grow bigger tomatoes, or sweeter corn or hotter pep-pers than they can.

The fall fair provides an op-portunity to “show off” some of our efforts, and it is not too ear-ly to start thinking about what we’re going to plant. It is time to get our orders in to those

seed companies, or to stop and have a good look at those seed racks in the stores before the best varieties are gone!

The 2016 fall fair is sched-uled for Aug. 26-28, and your fall fair committee is already busy with the preparations. Celtic folk band takes GEM stageCanadian Celtic folk band

Blackthorn will grace the stage at the GEM Theatre on Thurs-day, March 3.

Blackthorn saw its inception back in 1989 with a group of musicians who found a com-mon interest in a music that wasn’t all that common in Van-couver at the time.

Early highlights included performing at Vancouver’s seminal Celtica Festival in 1990 along with De Dannan

and Andy M. Stewart and per-forming and recording with the World Champion SFU Pipe Band. Since then, the group of four musicians has travelled a long road through the streets of traditional and contempo-rary Celtic music, performing concerts and at Celtic and folk festivals and Highland Games throughout Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest.

The band’s extensive rep-ertoire is rooted in the musical traditions of Scotland and Ire-land as well as the folk music

of English and French Canada. Blackthorn’s repertoire has expanded to include creative original compositions that re-flect the influences of these traditions. From lively jigs and reels, to songs with rousing choruses and heart-wrenching airs and ballads, they bring the music to life.

Blackthorn’s performance at the GEM follows a September 2015 release of a new recording, Open Skies.

Advance tickets are now available at the theatre.

Don’t miss out on film festival Just in front of the Oscars, Grand

Forks’ No Boundaries Film Club will be screening the Traveling World Community Film Festival at the GFSS auditorium.

The festival opens on Friday, Feb. 26 with a 7 p.m. showing of Aina, which is directed by Dave Mossop and former Boundary resident Josh Thome. The festival continues on Saturday, Feb. 28 and wraps up on Sunday, March 1 with Landfill Harmonica, which is about a musical youth group from Paraguay who live next to one of South America’s largest landfills and play instruments made of garbage. The festival, which be-gan in 2006, is the 11th annual for Grand Forks.

Board member Mary Ann West-away said the festival is based out of Comox on Vancouver Island. Grand Forks is one of several different stops on the tour. Westway says the board goes through all the films and nar-rows it down to a select few for the festival. “We get together and sadly we have to eliminate some of the movies because of time constraints. Also we get input from some of our audience into the movies we choose,” she said. “They’ll send us a list of movies they want to see. They

participate.” Aina is a 23-minute short film

about how some of the world’s larg-est chemical companies use the is-land of Kauai in Hawaii as an open-air testing ground for pesticides on genetically modified crops. The film highlights some of the pressing en-vironmental and health crises fac-ing the island of Kauai—and planet earth. The focus for the film is on so-lutions, as well as the beauty of the

island and wisdom of Hawaiian culture. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Oregon Film Awards.

“We were really ex-cited when we looked at the list and saw Josh Thome’s film there,” said Westaway. “Obviously, we chose Josh’s film. We’ve shown one of his films before. He’s much more well known now. So we’re going to open the film festival up with his film. We thought it just made sense. It’s a short film, only 20 minutes or so and we’ve paired with the film of Green-peace (How to Change the World). So he’s in good company.”

Other highlights for the festival are How to Change the World (Friday, 7:35 p.m.), which is about the origins of the environmental activist group Greenpeace. The film won a Special Jury Award for editing at Sundance, as well as Food Chains (Saturday, 10:30 a.m.), which is about an intrep-

id group of Florida farmworkers bat-tling against the global supermarket industry through their own program which partners with growers and retailers to improve working condi-tions for farm workers in the U.S.

Westaway says that many of the films are about having hope among despair; of underdogs rising up against the odds. “The movies are all very different,” she said. “There is a movie on traditional farming, First Nations history, impact of cloth-ing on the environment. One of the ones that looks interesting (Facing Fear) is about a former neo-nazi skin head bumps into his gay victim who he beat up and almost killed. They ended up becoming friends and working together. That sounds real-ly interesting. Circus Without Borders looks beautiful and really good.”

On hand at the school will be the Boundary Peace Initiative provid-ing coffee and tea as well as serv-ing borscht lunch on both Saturday and Sunday by donation. Tickets for the festival are only available at the door. The cost is $20 for a festival pass (half for low income) or $5 per session ($3 for low income). GFSS students get in for free.

Westaway added that if the club has leftover funds they will pur-chase DVDs of the films and donate them to the library. She said there are more than 20 films already at the li-brary from previous festivals.

Ponderosa returns

Festival founders Kris Hargrave and Kia Zahrabi confirmed today that while B.C.’s largest interface fire of 2015 caused the cancellation of their third installment, Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival will return in 2016.

The festival is slated for Aug. 19 - 21, at the fair-grounds in Rock Creek.

The festival, called off last year due to safety concerns just two days before it was set to begin, was hit hard by the cancellation. Hargrave and Zahrabi, however, are “rallying for Rock Creek” and bringing the three days of music, art, camping, and freshness, back for another year.

“Last year’s cancellation was difficult to say the least, but it has motivated us even more to come back even stronger this year,” Zahrabi said in a press release this week. “Quality music, chill vibes, awesome value, maximum freshness—that’s what Ponderosa is, and this year our fans have an added opportunity to directly help a community that was hit by the worst forest fire they’ve seen in over 30 years.”

The two also continue to ensure that the event benefits and supports the community of Rock Creek as much moving forward as they have in the past, Zahrabi said.

The donations from November’s “Let’s Build A House!” fundraiser at the Imperial in Vancouver will help build a new home this spring for the Winn family, living just north of Rock Creek. In addition, a portion of each ticket sold for the 2016 festival will be donated to Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC, the organization spearheading the rebuild efforts.

“People are always asking us how they can help, and well, this is it. By purchasing tickets early people not only secure their three days of music and sun for an unbeat-able price, they also help give the festival the boost it needs to stay afloat while donating funds directly to the rebuild efforts in the community. It’s a win - win - win.”

Five RRSP Tips from CPABCVANCOUVER, February 12, 2016 – Tax season has started and that means British Columbians are trying to make sense of tax changes and how to handle their RRSPs. The Chartered Professional Accountants of British Columbia (CPABC) has put together five important RRSP tips for the 2015 tax year: 1. Who is Eligible to Contribute to an RRSP?Anyone with “earned income” in a prior year who is subject to Canadian taxation on that “earned income”, including non-residents, may contribute to an RRSP. You can make part or all of your RRSP contributions to a spousal RRSP under which you are the contributor and your spouse is the annuitant, and you as the contributor are entitled to the tax deduction. For this purpose, a spouse refers to a legally married partner or a common-law partner of the opposite or same sex with whom you have cohabitated for the past 12 months. 2. Tax Savings from an RRSPIf you have an RRSP deduction limit as shown on your 2014 Notice of Assessment and you are a B.C. resident, the following are the income tax savings you could realize from making an RRSP contribution: • If your taxable income is between $11,327

and $44,701, a $1,000 RRSP contribution would reduce your 2015 taxes by up to $227.

• If your taxable income is between $44,702 and $89,401, a $1,000 RRSP contribution would reduce your 2015 taxes by about $227 to $343.

• If your taxable income is between $89,402 and $138,586, a $1,000 RRSP contribution would reduce your 2015 taxes by about $343 to $407.

• If your taxable income is over $138,587, a $1,000 RRSP contribution would reduce your 2015 taxes by about $437 to $458.

Remember, an RRSP is a tax deferral vehicle–you will be taxed on the funds when withdrawn. That said, you would rather pay $1 of income tax tomorrow than $1 of income tax today. Actual tax savings will result if you are in a lower tax bracket when you withdraw the funds, or if you can save income taxes by moving taxable income to a lower income spouse through a spousal RRSP. Look into the amount you can save with an RRSP contribution today. 3. Early Contribution to an RRSPRRSPs can be tax-effective investment vehicles, especially if you are many years from retirement. If you do decide to take advantage of an RRSP, it is advisable to contribute at the beginning of the year to start the tax-free compounding of earnings within the RRSP earlier. Also consider monthly contributions to your RRSP throughout the year as opposed to a lump sum contribution at the end of the year or in the first 60 days of the following year.

For your RRSP contribution to be deductible for a particular tax year, the contribution must

be made by the 60th day following the end of the year. For the 2015 tax year, the deadline is February 29, 2016. 4. Is There a Good Time to Use the Money in an RRSP Prior to Retirement? The primary objective of an RRSP is to save for retirement by permitting tax deductions for current period contributions, and tax-deferrals on investment earnings, with the goal of creating a retirement nest egg. Ideally, tax deductions occur during periods of higher income (higher income tax rates) and withdrawals occur during periods of lower income (lower income tax rates). With this in mind, it might sometimes make sense to withdraw funds from your RRSP prior to retirement. That said, since the purpose of an RRSP is to save for retirement, you should think very carefully about the future impact on your retirement wealth before withdrawing funds from your RRSP, especially since RRSP contribution room is finite. (If you plan to re-contribute a previous withdrawal, outside of special programs such as the Home Buyers’ Plan, such re-contributions would utilize future RRSP contribution room.) Also be careful about withdrawing from a spousal RRSP because the income could be attributed to the contributing spouse if a spousal RRSP contribution had been made in the prior three years. 5. Withdrawals from an RRSPProvided your RRSP is not in a non-redeemable investment or a locked-in RRSP, you may withdraw any portion of your RRSP at any time. In most circumstances, you will pay tax on the amount withdrawn from an RRSP as it is considered income in the year you make the withdrawal. In addition, withdrawals do not affect your RRSP deduction limit; therefore, you will permanently lose that contribution room. When you make your withdrawal, the financial institution administering your RRSP will withhold 10 to 30 per cent for taxes. You will get a credit for the tax withheld when you complete your income tax return for the year. You might owe additional income tax at that time or be entitled to a tax refund of part or all of the tax withheld, depending on your marginal income tax rate and other income tax withheld for the year. Funds withdrawn from an RRSP for the Home Buyer’s Plan or the Lifelong Learning Plan are not taxable income in the year withdrawn and are not subject to withholdings. They are, however, subject to repayment or income inclusion requirements over time. Speak to your Chartered Professional Accountant if you are thinking about a withdrawal from your RRSP.

Dylann Asling hit the long range shot against Castlegar with the GFSS junior girls basketball team down three late in the game. Unfortunately, her foot was over the line and the shot only counted for two instead of the three that would’ve giv-en them the tie on Saturday in a tournament in Trail. The Wolves were unable to come up with the steal after that and fell 40-39 to the Stanley Humphries Bulldogs of Castlegar in what amounted to the tournament final. Ariana Clark led the Wolves in scoring against Cas-tlegar with 12 points.

“It was a tough one to lose,” said coach Craig Lindsay. “The win would have given us our first tournament title but Cas-tlegar is a good team. They very rarely miss open shots or free throws. Their shooting is very consistent.”

In other games, GFSS beat Trail two 33-32 in an excit-ing back and forth battle. The Wolves trailed by one with eight seconds when J.L. Crowe (Trail) traveled. Zailey Howard

inbounded to Clark who made a nice pass to Sarah Malkinson for the last second shot. Malkin-son switched it for the win. Tara Makortoff led the Wolves with 10 points.

“It was very exciting,” said Lindsay. “We played strong defence and were able to force them to turn the ball over. We only had really one shot for the win and Clark made a great pass while doubleteamed, which led to the basket. The kids were very excited. There was quite the celebration after the win.”

In earlier games, GFSS beat Boundary Central (Midway) 36-23 with Kalli McIver lead-ing the way with 12 points and Trail one 33-24 with Clark, Makortoff and Portia Dagg all scoring six points each.

“It was a good weekend overall,” said Lindsay. “We were much better at setting up our offence and keeping our heads. When we are able to pass the ball up ahead to our

posts we’re very tough to stop.” On Monday the Wolves trav-

elled to Midway for a league game. GFSS dominated play right from the start and cruised to the 56-24 win led by 12 points from Victoria Henne and seven points each from Zailey How-ard and Clark.

“That’s probably the best we’ve played as a team,” said Lindsay. “We really worked together and looked for each other on offence. Defensively we were very aggressive and had some very good traps on our press.”

The Wolves will be looking to avenge their one point loss to Castlegar on Wednesday at home.

Grade 8 girls - The GFSS grade 8 girls bas-

ketball team continues to excel as they beat Mount Sentinel (South Slocan) 43-13 behind the scoring of Kelsa Leslie with 15, Kiyomi Dunnet with 14 and Emily Stewart with 13.

Fighting for the ball!Players from the GFSS and Mount Sentinel (South Slocan - in dark jerseys) junior boys basketball team battle for the ball during a league game on Feb. 10 at GFSS. The Wolves won the game hand-ily and followed that up with a big win in Midway Monday against the Boundary Central Roadrunners.

Silver Kettle was the docking spot for the Love Boat cruise event Saturday, Feb 13.

Judy Foster spearheaded the Valentine’s event, recruiting several deck hands and a spe-cial guest musician, Laura Jean Cuthbert. The coffee room was transformed into a colourful Valentine’s cruise venue with aproximately 20 guests on board.

Love Boat trivia, card making, and Name That Tune were a few of the activities offered, not to mention the photo booth with tourist garb to sport.

Laura Jean Cuthbert arrived in full Mary Pop-pins costume which she had completely fash-ioned herself down to the spats, in promotion of

the upcoming production. She played the piano for Name That Tune and danced and sang a spot of Supercalafragilisticexpialadocious. Such a treat for all.

Kitchen staff Denise set out a lovely fruit-fi lled punch and Mary Hummel made delicately decorated Valentine cookies and yummy choco-late cupcakes.

The event closed with the crew singing We Are One in the Bond of Love, very appropriate for the celebration. Many thanks to Silver Kettle and its residents who supported this fi rst cruise and to all the deck hands Colleen Saliken, Nancy and Dale Redford and Sharon Trainer who were on duty.

THANK YOUto all the sponsors that made Family Day a huge success!

Three local curlers will heading to the Curl BC Mas-ters Provincial Championships in Abbotsford after qualifying during a playdown recently in Creston.

The team is skipped by Nel-son’s Gerry Beaudry and in-cludes the Grand Forks trio of Don Bedard, Gerry Foster and Tom Bassett.

The trio from Grand Forks also won a spot in the BCIM-

CA/PCMA provincial champi-onships which will be held in Kelowna the week following the Abbotsford event. Skipping the BCIMCA team is Bedard with Foster at third, Basset at

second and Paul Beattie at lead.“This achievement is a

somewhat rare ‘double’ in Mas-ters curling in the province,” said Foster.

Spring break lifesaving course slated

Derby winnersannounced

The Lifesaving Society performs re-search into drowning and aquatic-related injury to enable us to focus on causes and their prevention. The society offers a number of public education programs to aid in helping to reduce the drowning and aquatic-related injuries.

The Bronze Medallion teaches an un-derstanding of the lifesaving principles, embodied in the four components of wa-ter rescue education: judgment, knowl-edge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn advance lifesaving techniques for chal-lenging rescues of increased risk, involv-ing conscious and unconscious victims in varying water depths.

Participants develop stroke efficiency and endurance in timed swims (500 me-tres) and includes CPR-A.

The Bronze Cross is designed for life-savers who want the challenge of more advanced program, including an intro-duction to safety supervision.

The Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training program, includ-ing National Lifeguard certification. This course includes a 600 metre timed swim and CPR-C.

GFREC will be offering an Advanced Lifesaving Spring Break camp from Sun-day, March 20 to Thursday, March 24. Complete the two courses in just one week. Be ready to take your aquatics training one step for further.

The National Lifeguard course will be held at the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre from June 25 - June 30.

This is a 44-hour training program to certify you as a lifeguard. You will be ready to be hired as a lifeguard for sum-mer employment or part-time work to help get you through schooling or to start a career in the aquatics field.

Swimming is a lifelong skill that can be taught at any age. Evening preschool swim lessons for ages 3 - 5 will be held from March 1 - 17 between 5:15 and 7:30pm. Deadline to register is Feb. 23.
