Kettle River claims life

RCMP dive teams and search and rescue personnel worked together on Dec. 31 to recover the body of a man who fell into the Kettle River the day before. Craig Lindsay photo

A local man has died after falling through the ice on the Kettle River just east of Grand Forks on Wednesday (Dec. 30). The BC Coroner’s Service has confi rmed the deceased as Thomas Charles Grubisic, aged 54, of Grand Forks.

Grubisic fell through the ice at approximately 2:45 p.m. An RCMP press release stated that a witness saw Grubisic and called police. “RCMP of-fi cers arrived on the scene and spotted Grubisic through binoculars and ob-served him in the water hanging on to the ice edge,” said Cpl. On Thursday, RCMP dive teams and search and rescue personnel were able to locate and recover Grubisic, deceased, from the river. The crews, which included personnel from the RCMP, fi re/rescue, ambulance, search

and rescue units from Nelson, Penticton and Grand Forks, and cold water trained fi refi ghters, found the body at around 11:10 a.m. on Thursday after searching for a couple of hours.

The coroner’s report stated that tracks in the snow indicated that Grubisic was trying to walk across the ice covered river in an area just south of Highway 3 near the Riviera RV Park.

Nothing is rubber stamped and all 13 directors are tuned into re-gional district business, says Grace McGregor.

“We’ve been working hard on becoming a unifi ed board and I be-lieve we have that,” said McGregor, director for Area C/Christina Lake. “People are reading their agendas, paying attention and asking ques-tions,” she added. “I think those conversations are what make the board even better.”

Now entering her third year as chair of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) board, McGregor is eager to start things up in the new year, beginning with a streamlined timetable.

“What we’ve been working on is stacking meetings, piggy-backing if you will, and simplifying it a bit,”

she explained. “So people aren’t on the road all the time.”

There are currently 19 commit-tees, not including select commit-tees, and winter travel can be espe-cially cumbersome between Grand Forks and Trail.

Beginning January, Commit-tee of the Whole days are planned, meaning two or three committee meetings scheduled over the course of one day instead of three separate days.

“We are giving that a try and hoping it will work,” said Mc-Gregor. “Because it will free up time for elected offi cials to spend more time in their respective communi-ties, and take on other portfolios they’ve wanted to do, but haven’t had the time to do.”

Another trial starting in the new year could keep agenda matters moving along during the winter months despite the weather.

Broadband Internet service was upgraded in the Grand Forks loca-tion this month, allowing for tele-communication in future situations when driving conditions are poor.

“I would like to make this clear that we are not looking at video conferencing to take over board meetings or face-to-face meetings,” McGregor clarifi ed. “We are looking at video conferencing for commit-tees when weather is bad or things prevent us from getting together,” she said. “Or, if someone wants to do a board presentation, it’s not al-ways convenient for people to come to our little world…we can still do the work without putting it on the back burner, and sometimes that information is what provides good understanding and good decision making.”

Another undertaking launching in the new year is an overall review of the organization that is meant to

help improve both governance and administration.

“I think, quite frankly, our peo-ple at the regional district are very, very busy,” she said. “We may fi nd out, they are too busy.”

The goal is to identify which op-erations are working effi ciently as well as areas that require improve-ment.

“I think people get lost in the ideas of cutbacks and they forget communication and good service is also the primary goal,” McGregor continued. “If you can cutback and not lose service then fi ne—if you can’t, then you need to fi nd a differ-ent way,” she added. “If you really care about people getting the right information, sometimes it just costs more, period.

“So this is something I am going to fi nd very interesting and I think, people are going to be a little sur-prised.”

Weather creates havoc on roads and highwaysSnow related motor vehicle accidents

Grand Forks RCMP responded to 11 collisions involving motor vehicles due to road conditions over the past two weeks. Most of those occured on Highway 3.

“The majority of those involved were people driving too fast for road conditions and sliding off the road into the ditch or hit-ting other vehicles,” said Cpl. Philip Crack.

Impaired drivers stoppedOn Dec. 22, police stopped a driver on

Granby Road as a result of a complaint.“Checks indicated he was impaired,”

said Crack. “He blew a fail on an ASD and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition under the immediate roadside prohibition legislation.”

On Dec. 28, a 23-year-old female was stopped after avoiding a police stop. “A

check showed she was impaired and she was is-sued a 90-day driving prohibition,” said Crack.

“She was a class 7 N driver and so she was issued a ticket for driving contrary to re-strictions.”Man bear-sprayed

On Dec. 29, police responded to a 9-1-1 call from a Grand Forks business about a man who was acting erratically. “It was de-termined that he was bear-sprayed,” said Crack. “The male is known to police and was not cooperative with the investigation. He didn’t tell us what happened.”New Year’s quiet

Crack said that New Year’s Eve was pretty quite in the Grand Forks area with only six files received and no major inci-dents.

In all there were 91 files in the past two weeks including three false alarms.

POLICE BRIEFS By Craig Lindsay

A Dodge pick-up truck collided with a Honda Civic on Monday morning at around 8:30 a.m. near the bridge on the corner of Granby and Central (Highway 3). The driver of the Dodge pulled out onto the highway from Granby and hit the Civic head on. Cpl. Rich-ard Lanz said there were minor injuries and that the driver of the Dodge, a 64-year-old Grand Forks man, was issued a ticket for failing to yield after a stop. Craig Lindsay photo

Ponderosa founders help buildThe co-founders of the Ponderosa Music

Festival are stepping up in a big way to help Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC (HFH-SEBC) rebuild a home for a family in West-bridge.

A donation of $5,100 has been received from the co-founders of the Ponderosa Music Festival, Kris Hargrave and Kia Zahrabi, to be used for the Winn family rebuild. They held a benefit concert in Vancouver in November with many of the bands performing that were scheduled to be at the Ponderosa Music Fes-tival in August that was cancelled due to the wildfires.

HFHSEBC made the announcement last week in a press release, stating that the dona-tion will help rebuild the Winn family home that was destroyed in Westbridge during the August wildfires.

A new and welcomed partner to the Winn family rebuild project is Harmony Homes, who have donated the costs of designing the home and providing the blueprints. The Har-mony Homes Boundary representative is Bry-an Fitzpatrick, and together with HFHSEBC will be finalizing the design for the new home

in the near future. HFHSEBC also acknowledged the generous

donation of $5,000 from Community Futures Boundary to assist with the rebuild.

“Our heartfelt thanks to the board of direc-tors and Executive Director Wendy McCulloch for their demonstration of leadership in stand-ing together when confronted with a disaster in our region,” said executive director Bob Huff.

“We would also like to state our gratitude to the national association of Habitat for Human-ity affiliates in Canada. HFH Southeast BC has received financial support from as far away as Ontario for the Winn family rebuild. Thanks also to the BC affiliates in Kelowna, and Upper Fraser Valley for their financial support.”

The goal for the organization is to raise $100,000 and have the Winn family back living on their property by the fall of 2016. HFHSEBC will begin construction on the Winn family home this spring with the collaboration of key businesses and individuals in the Boundary region.

“Rebuilding will be made easier with the generosity of our community,” said Huff.

Anyone wishing to help out can contact Huff at 250-442-2722 or by email bob.huff@hfhsebc.

It’s great to see someone who was born and raised in Grand Forks doing well in the world. Selena Demenoff is a second year medical stu-dent at UNBC in Prince George and recently won a prestigious award.

Demenoff is planning to open a practice in Grand Forks or the area when she graduates. She is another shining example of someone who has not only done very well for them-selves but also plans on returning to the area and contributing.

Demenoff is a firm believer that the health of a person is very much determined by their surroundings. To that end she wants to be-come an advocate for unmet needs in the Boundary. “Promoting health is not always sufficient to support a community, but em-powering individuals to make changes in their own lives can be,” she said.

When many rural communities are strug-gling to fill health care needs, Grand Forks is very fortunate to have one of our “bright lights” doing well and planning to return and give back to the community.

Fighting aside, hockey is a violent game by nature

A local resident recently post-ed on social media that he had taken his grandson to the Bor-der Bruins game on Saturday at the arena and after witnessing several fights, he left the game and would not be returning. “A Bruins game is no place for chil-dren,” he wrote.

As a reporter I have covered many hockey games over the past six or seven years. I also played minor hockey from the age of six to 18 and then, after a brief hia-tus, recreational hockey and old-timers hockey. So I believe I speak with some experience on the sub-ject. It is admirable for parents to want to protect their children and keep them safe; that is com-pletely understandable. I’m not a parent. I do have a couple of niec-es and I didn’t want to see them

play rugby when they were in school. I certainly cringed when they got bumped and pushed in basketball.

For myself, there were certain-ly injuries growing up and play-ing hockey. I still bear a few scars from the pre-face cage days. I also had a few bigger injuries like a dislocated shoulder and bruised hips. We didn’t have a lot of fights in our games. Of course, I only played house league so maybe there were more at the rep level. The couple of fights I was in were usually over pretty quickly.

Growing up I would often watch the junior hockey games, the junior A Vernon Lakers and then the Cranbrook Colts and senior Cranbrook Royals. There were certainly the occasional fight but I can’t recall ever be-ing really riled up or disgusted. In most cases hockey fights are between two consenting play-ers. The players know what is happening when they fight. Any fight in junior is a game miscon-duct. In the professional ranks

such as the NHL, it’s a basic five-minute penalty in most cases.

Why is there fighting in hock-ey? Why is hockey the only major sport with fisticuffs? In basket-ball, baseball and even football, it’s very, very rare. The reasons for fighting in hockey vary but are usually along the lines of re-taliation for a prior play, to try and gain momentum for your team, to intimidate the other team, and to protect star players.

Commentator Don Cherry is a long-time advocate of aggressive play and has said that there is a “code” in the NHL where it is re-spectable to use honourable vio-lence (fighting) to deter dishon-ourable hockey violence (cheap shots and dirty play).

Is fighting good or bad for hockey? Fighting aside, hockey is a violent game by nature. From an early age, hitting is a big part of hockey. It’s a game of short spurts—go hard for one minute and then sit and rest for two min-utes. Adrenaline rises and testos-terone is boosted leading to more

physical encounters. Many hock-ey fans watch the game because of the hitting and the fighting. It’s a vicarious way of releasing pent up frustration and stress for many.

Until about 20 or 30 years ago, little thought was put into protecting the players. Sure there was equipment, shoulder pads, knee pads, helmets, gloves and so on, but it’s only been recent-ly that hitting from behind and head shots have been banned and experts have begun looking at the long-term damage of fight-ing and hitting.

Bob Probert was known as one of the toughest fighters in the NHL during his career. Sadly he died at the age of 45 of heart failure. It was later discovered that he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative disease of the brain found in ath-letes with a history of repetitive brain trauma. Probert had a total of 355 fights over his 16-year ca-reer. More than 20 deceased pro-fessional footballs players have

been diagnosed posthumously with chronic traumatic encepha-lopathy (CTE).

Another tragic case was that of Derek Boogaard, an enforcer who played in the NHL with Minne-sota and the New York Rangers, who died at age 28 of a drug and alcohol overdose while recover-ing from a concussion. Boogard was also diagnosed with CTE, which can only be seen after death. Both Probert and Boogard had drug and alcohol issues as well.

It’s hard to say whether those two cases are the “tip of the ice-berg” or rare cases helped along by substance abuse.

As for the Border Bruins, any-one watching this year can see how much faster and better they are than last year or even earlier in the season. Here’s hoping that the young team can get it done on the ice without having to re-sort to too much fisticuffs. These young fellows play hard and de-serve to have good crowds cheer-ing them on.

The Grand Forks Gazette announces with extreme sadness the passing of our long-time

opinion columnist Roy Ronaghan. Roy will be greatly missed not only as a

Gazette contributor, but also as a dear friend.-30-

Rousing the Rabble

ROY RONAGHAN

A letter in last week’s Gazette from Rocco and Janet Catalano was topped with the unfortunate headline, “Problems with FortisBC.”

The headline is unfortunate because the Williams Lake couple were by no means saying they had a problem with Fortis; in fact, they were congratulating Fortis employees.

“I wish to go on record to say how pleased my wife and I were with the time and effort, which the employees of Fortis put in, to help us out in a big way!” the letter read.

The Gazette sincerely apologizes for the misleading headline.

For the record

Don’t miss this inspiring film

See you at the 2016 fall fair

Editor, The Gazette:A movie called This Changes

Everything will be shown at the GEM Theatre tomorrow (Thursday, Jan. 7) at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 adults and $6 youth.

It is important for our Boundary community to “rewrite the story” we tell our-selves about climate change. There is something we can do, despite the huge corporate and government interests in main-

taining the status quo.We have yet another large

BC Timber Sales proposal to cut a huge amount of forested watershed in the Granby River drainage without appropriate public consultation, we are getting winter again after a pa-thetic winter drought while the European Alps have no snow, the second largest lake in Bo-livia dried up in December.

These are three points of evidence to help our commu-

nity to realize we can’t have business as usual.

Please join us in watching a very inspiring film about how people around the world are taking action and telling differ-ent stories to help our com-munities make adjustments as quickly as possible.

We have the ability to do something.

Editor, The Gazette:Another year has slipped by

and despite some challenging times this summer with the wildfire in our area, we man-aged to have a very successful fall fair.

The fair’s success is always due to the countless volunteers

and the generosity of our local communities, businesses and non-profit societies. This past summer was quite stressful for a lot of people in our area due to the fire, but you all gave tremendous effort to make the fair a success.

On behalf of the fall fair

association, I would like to ex-tend our sincere thanks to you all and hope you all had a safe and happy holiday season.

Looking forward to seeing you all in 2016!

Voter’s Challenge still waiting on results

It’s now a new year, but we’re still waiting on the re-sults of the Community Voters’ Challenge following October’s election.

Once the results are in, one community will be declared voting champion — having achieved the highest per cent increase in voters for the region.

But before the results can be tallied, the organizers behind the Community Voters’ Chal-lenge need access to the results by poll, and that information still hasn’t been released by Elections Canada.

According to Mike Chap-man, one of the organizers, they were originally hoping to have those results shortly after the election.

“We assumed that would be the case, but Elections Can-ada has said that they want to have all their i’s dotted and t’s crossed, and until they have

all the precise information, they won’t publish them,” said Chapman.

A representative from Elec-tions Canada said that it’s nor-mal for that i n f o r m a t i o n to be released three to four months after an election, as op-posed to short-ly after, and expects the in-formation will be available by either late Feb-ruary or sometime in March.

Residents of the region will have to wait to see who is vic-torious, but Chapman said the good news is that we already know the voter turnout in the area increased.

“We know that the vote went up considerably across the region and in fact I think that was our hope and that was our plan, and I think we can celebrate that regardless of who actually won the challenge,” he

said.Voter turn out in the South

Okanagan-West Kootenay rid-ing was 74 per cent, whereas the voter turnout for the Brit-

ish Columbia Southern Interior riding in 2011 was 66 per cent.

In the meantime, organizers are still hoping that Rick Mer-cer will take part in announcing the winner.

“We still have something up our sleeve; we’re working on that. We’re hoping that once we get the results from Elec-tions Canada and know which community came out on top, perhaps we can invite him to be part of that announcement at that point,” said Chapman.

Don’t Miss Out!

A local medical student has received the British Columbia Rural Interest Award, which is given to a UBC medical student who has an interest in entering rural medi-cine once their training is finished.

Selena Demenoff of Grand Forks is cur-rently in her second year at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC)’s Northern Medical program in Prince George. Demenoff was thrilled to receive the award, and hopes to set up a clinical family practice in or near Grand Forks.

“I was delighted to win the award,” she said. “I want to thank everyone who has supported me through my continued edu-cational journey.”

Demenoff was born and raised in Grand Forks and graduated from GFSS in 2009. She had an early passion for medicine and has cultivated that ever since graduating from high school. “Growing up in a rural community, I was close to family, extend-ed family, friends, community and cul-ture,” she said. “It gave me a strong sense of belonging. It also taught me that it’s not what you do in life but why you do it that counts.”

Upon graduating from high school, Demenoff went to UNBC where she com-pleted her Bachelor of Health Sciences with a major in Biomedical Studies with honours in 2013. She then began medical school in the fall of 2014 and is currently in her second year. “I have thoroughly en-joyed both academic programs,” she said. “I have been interested in effective rural

healthcare since a very young age,” she re-called. “I developed a growing passion for medicine as I learned how our physicians can make a difference in the community.”

Demenoff has a strong desire to see im-provement in the lives of people living in rural communities. “Promoting health is not always sufficient to support a com-munity, but empowering individuals to make changes in their own lives can be,”

she said. “It takes more than just treating a health issue to achieve healthy communi-ties, which is why research is so important to me.”

Demenoff spent last summer working on several research projects that focused on the delivery of rural health care in the Kootenay Boundary district. One project was to determine strategies that will help phy-sicians and allied health care workers streamline the deliv-ery of health services, and the other was looking at quality improvement around the sur-gical services within Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital.

Through her research, Demenoff has reinforced to herself how important so-cial determinants such as employment, housing, social safety network and health services are when it comes to community health, particularly in rural communities.

“Rural physicians are a part of the community they serve,” she said. “They can be advo-cates for unmet needs in their area.”

Upon graduation from medi-cal school, Demenoff is hop-ing to open a family practice in Grand Forks or the Boundary. “Many areas and specialties in-terest me and I look forward to a future practice such as family medicine that can combine these interests,” she said. “I hope to help marginalized populations,

rural families, and unmet needs in our Kootenay and Boundary regions.”

The British Columbia Rural Interest Awards are funded from a collaborative committee of the Ministry of Health and

the Doctors of BC. Individual awards of $5,000 are made available to 30 medical students each year to support their pursuit of practicing medicine in rural communi-ties.

UNBC is one of three distributed medi-cal education sites of UBC’s Faculty of Medicine.

Singer songwriter Lance King has come to the aid of a crowdfunding campaign aimed at helping parents faced with a diagnosis their child will be born with Down syn-drome or other severe special needs.

As the father of an adult child with Down syndrome, Lance is keenly aware that a special needs diagnosis does

not mean life is over, and in-stead can be the beginning of a “brand new sunny day.”

For every time Lance’s song Brand New Sunny Day is played on the radio, he will contribute $5 toward the Options of the Heart campaign (up to $500). He hopes this song, dedicated to people living with disabili-ties, will become the anthem for this campaign and others championing the cause of peo-ple living with special needs.

Make a resolutionResolutions are

made to commit to positive changes in our own and other’s lives.

Each January, many of us resolve to better ourselves in some way. A few of us actually make good on those resolutions. While about 75 per cent of people stick to their goals for at least a week, less than half (46 per cent) are still on target six months later.

this was from a study done back in 2002.

It’s hard to keep up the enthusiasm months after you’ve swept up the confetti, but it’s not impos-sible. This year, pick one of the following

worthy resolutions, and stick with it. Here are just a few examples of some great resolutions to choose.

It does not always have to be about losing unwanted pounds we have

packed on over the holiday season. It can be about helping others, finding ways to laugh more often or plan to en-joy each day to the fullest.

If your resolution is about commit-ting to fitness and becoming healthier in 2016, GFREC aquatic staff can help you with fitness room orientations, specific swim workouts, circuit weight training classes or any drop-in aqua-fit class.

Stop by and pick up the January flyer with full details on all fitness programs, pool schedule and passes prices and

The Border Bruins pulled off a strong win on Saturday at the Foundation Builder’s game at Jack Goddard Memo-rial Arena. The Bruins, who were led by a hat-trick from local player Bran-don Savaia, won the game 6-3 over the Spokane Braves. Before the start of the game, the Bruins honoured the 1973-74 Bruins management and players who were divisional champions that year.

The game was marred by a second period which featured several fights and several game misconducts handed out to brawling players. Receiving game misconducts for the Bruins were Garret

Brisebois, Trey Mason, Nicky Leeder, Connor Manegre, Shayne Pluto and Jor-dan Robertson.

Tyler Fyfe opened up the scoring at 12:49 of the first period, assisted by Logan Casavant and Bryson Yee. The Braves responded a short time later with a short-handed marker from Gar-rett Graham. The Bruins regained the lead with 27 seconds left in the first with a power play marker from Yee (assisted by Mason and goalie Anthony Galliart).

In between the fights in the second period the Bruins scored two more goals, by Leeder and Savaia with his first, to go up by a commanding 4-1 lead.

The teams exchanged goals in the third with Austin Breen and Kyle Don-

aldson scoring for Spokane, while Savaia picked up his second and third goals for Grand Forks to secure the win.

The Bruins are back on home ice this Saturday with a game against the high oc-tane Kimberley Dynamiters. The Nitros lead the Eddie Mountain division and the entire KIJHL with a 28-win, 4-loss, 4-overtime loss record for 60 points. There high-scoring line-up features four of the top 10 scorers in the league with Jared March (50 points/2nd), Eric Buckley (50 points/2nd), Jason Richter (49 points/5th) and Jordan Busch (49 points/5th).

On Sunday, Grand Forks travels to Castlegar to play the second place Reb-els.

Jane Cherno Jane Chernoff was born into the family of Jim and

Annie Kurnoff on July 15, 1923 in Grand Forks, B.C. She was the oldest of 3 children and the only girl. Through-out her 92 years Jane was devoted to family. She attended

public school for a short while but much of her lessons were focused on developing life skills. These she learned

from the Doukhobor village way of life that she was a part of. In her early 20’s, at what is now the Station Pub, Jane met

Nick Chernoff and their attraction for each other was unmistak-able. They married on February 2, 1945, and together they bought

a piece of land closer to town and began the process of building a home. In 1949, Nick and Jane were blessed with their fi rst child, a daughter, Debbie. Jim was next in 1952 and in 1955 Walter was born and the family was complete. Throughout those early years as a family, Jane was a very active mother. She taught by example. What she wanted her children to value, she valued herself. She treated people the same way she wanted to be treated by others. She was a woman of many talents but most of all she was a mother who showed her children every day that her fami-ly mattered more to her than anything else in the world.

In 1968 Jane lost her beloved husband of only 23 years to a workplace accident. Choosing not to remarry, but rather to focus on the needs of her children, Jane adjusted and found contentment helping her children in any way she could. Over the years she helped marry off her sons (as her daughter was already married). She became a supportive grandmother and used the skills she learned as a young girl to keep everyone’s hands warm with knitted mittens, everyone’s taste buds satisfi ed with her delicious tradition Doukhobor dishes and her regular visits were always welcomed by her children and their families.

The house that Jane and Nick had built continued to be her home for many years. She kept an immaculate garden, cut the grass, occasionally let her children help with splitting some wood or trimming a hedge but for the most part she lived a simple life enjoying simple pleasures along the way. As her body began to show signs of age, she realized that she would have to adjust again. After selling the house, she moved into the Boundary Lodge where she developed new relationships with the staff and residents. Her last few years were spent in Hardy View Lodge at the Rezansoff Manner. She expressed her appreciation for the occasional visits from family and friends although her memories of people and events became increasing-ly faded.

During her lifetime Jane said goodbye to many family members and friends as they passed on. Her parents, her grandparents, both of her brothers, a niece, numer-ous aunts and uncles, cousins and many friends and acquaintances all predeceased her. The loved ones she leaves behind include her daughter Debbie (and Harry) Argatoff, her son Jim (and Marg) Chernoff and her son Walter (and Katie) Chernoff as well as numerous grand children and great grandchildren. Her memories will always be treasured. A funeral service was held on Sunday, January 3, 2016 in the Chapel of the Grand Forks Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Baker Family of Grand Forks.

What is the Phoenix Foundation?Philanthropy? Whoa!

That’s a big word. Is philanthropy a disease?

Is there a cure? If I told you philanthropy is simply think-ing about what CAUSE is close to your heart, and then putting some of your MON-EY to WORK so that THINGS GET BETTER in that area—would you say “Yeah, I get it”?

The Phoenix Foundation of the Boundary Communi-ties exists to do exactly what I’ve described. We are NOT the ski hill. We receive dona-tions from all sorts of people (like you). And local busi-nesses like Unifab, Interfor and Roxul. And registered charities: small ones like Boundary Women’s Coali-tion, Grand Forks Art Gal-lery and bigger ones like the Vancouver Foundation. And other organizations like the USCC, the Rotary Club of

Grand Forks, and Grand Forks Gyro. We have partner-ship funds with Greenwood I m p ro v e m e n t Society and the Village of Mid-way.

We invest the money we get, whether it’s $100,000 from the Grand Forks Credit Union, $25,000 from a person’s will, or $25 a month from a monthly donor.

We choose low risk in-vestment options so that the money is as protected as pos-sible. We want to have that capital FOREVER.

Then, once a year, after we have received the revenues

(the interest our money has earned) we give back to the community—helping causes important to the people who gave us the money in the fi rst place.

We provide scholarships to students carrying on their education. We give money to organizations who have cre-ated funds with us to help with their work (more on

that in another column.) We encourage local charitable groups to apply for grants, and our grants committee meets to consider which pro-posals we can afford to fund.

The Boundary is not known for being a wealthy region. We don’t have a lot of rich corporations, or a ton

of individual millionaires, for that matter. So it is pretty amazing that the Boundary has a community foundation in the fi rst place.

Now, why is this column called Million$ + Change? Because we want to increase our CAPITAL so we can do more granting to local CAUSES.

We currently hold about $2.5 million. We want to have at least $4 million working for the community. And we’ll accept mil-lions and we’ll ac-cept pocket change.

PLUS the rev-enues we receive

from our Million$ will help create positive CHANGE in our Boundary communities. Check out our website: www.phoenix-foundation.ca

Next column: How criti-cal is the Boundary’s need for the Phoenix Foundation? And how much money gets distributed each year?

Olivia is the most popular name for baby girls born in B.C. for the third straight year.

The province issued its an-nual list of top baby names cho-sen in 2014.

Ethan was the top name for boys, edging out Liam, the pre-vious year’s top choice.

It’s been a long run of popu-larity for Ethan, which has been number one or two every year

since 2002.Emma, So-

phia, Emily and Chloe rounded

out the top fi ve names for girls in 2014, while the other top boys’ names were Liam, Lucas, Oliver and Mason.

“Not surprisingly Terry was not the most popular boys’ name in British Columbia in 2014,” said Health Minister Terry Lake said.

Final statistics for 2015’s names won’t be avail-able until later in 2016, but so far Olivia ap-pears to be extending her streak, while Oli-ver was edging ahead of Liam and Ethan for top choice on the boys’ side as of Dec. 1.

The Vital Statis-tics Agency reported 44,500 babies born in B.C. in 2014 – 22,957 boys and 21,543 girls.

Robert Leslie “Buster” Smithers

January 12, 1921 Elstow, Saskatchewan

January 2, 2016 Grand Forks, British Columbia

Passed away peacefully at Boundary Hospital. Predeceased by his parents Les and Myrtte Smithers and his wife of 46 years Katherine and 2 son-in-laws.

Survived by daughter Marquerite Rotu, Pat (Joey) Talanoelo, Carol Lowrie Robert (George) Fieldino, 11 grandchildren, also numerous cousins.

Buster cherished his family and friends and the time he spent with them. He was very proud of his garden and was well known for the garden he grew even at Boundary Lodge.

He made many friends through his hunting from the Okanagan to the East Kootenays and other hob-bies including bowling, curling and playing crib.

He was a life member of Olive Elks Lodge and a life member of B.C. Senior Citizens Association.

He was very proud of his work for West Kootenay Power (Fortis) as a lineman, metre repairman and fi nally as a supervisor in Grand Forks and Green-wood for over 40 years. Buster retired in Midway in 1981 and spent the last four years at Boundary Lodge “the best place to call come” he always told his family.

Special thanks to his family Doctor, the staff at Boundary Lodge and nurses at Boundary Hospital and Home Care.

You will be missed by family and neighbours at Boundary Lodge and many friends but forever will be cherished and have fond memories of you.

Cremation has taken place. Arrangements taken care of by Graham Funeral Home, Oliver. The burial will take place in Oliver at a later date. Donations to the Boundary Lodge, [email protected] or 7130 9th Street, Grand Forks, B.C., V0H 1H4

Lance is the son of Canadian Country Gospel Hall of Famer Ed King.

Please call your local radio station and request brand new sunny day. Then go to Lance’s Facebook page to let us know in the comments which station played Brand New Sunny Day. Only verified plays will count, so be sure to let us know which stations to contact for verification.

Here is a link to the song on Lance’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/lanceking.musicman/videos/747959712001397/?pnref=story.

In addition to challenging Canadians across the country to request his song, Lance is challenging fellow Rotarians to meet his donation goal of $500 to create a Brand New Sunny Day for children with

special needs. Specific ways the money will be spent are detailed on Gofundme.
