A group of stakeholders are hoping to make the Trans Canada Trail between Grand Forks and Christina Lake designated non-motorized.

The Grand Forks Community Trails Society (GFCTS) has already begun the process and met with the Grand Forks ATV Club and the owner/manager of the trails: Rec Sites and Trails, Minis-try of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Op-erations (MFLNRO).

Stakeholders in the process gathered on April 17 for a meeting, which was moderated by Wen-dy McCulloch.

GFCTS president Chris Moslin said the pur-pose of the meeting was to gauge local support for designating a section of rail trail (Kettle River Heritage Trail) as non-motorized; to discuss op-portunities for partnership or stewardship of the rail trails in RDKB and to look at management of the rail trails in other jurisdictions.

“After reviewing the background history of the Trans Canada Trail in the province and the Boundary, the presenter (Tennessee Trent of Rec Sites and Trails) examined the trail management systems including the agreement between the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen,” said Moslin. “The (people at the) meeting were also informed about the legislation that governs the management of the trail. The B.C. Heritage Society declared Grand Forks’ Heritage Week 1990 the best in the province, and bestowed Grand Forks District Heritage Advisory Committee with a plaque denoting the achievement.1995

Cellular phone service is on its way to Grand Forks. BC Tel Mobility has an-nounced that cellular and paging ser-vice will be up and running in Grand Forks by June 15.2000

After half a century in business, the

employees of the Grand Forks District Savings Credit Union have joined a union, the B.C. Government Employees Union (BCGEU). The 48 staff members who do not work in management had signed cards for union certifi cation on a couple of occasions earlier this spring but the credit union appealed the sign-ups with the Labour Relations Board over the issue of how the unions had cards signed; however, at a recent hear-ing, the Labour Relations Board decided in favour of the union.2005

The city wasted little time in address-ing the 14-day window that was given by the Worker’s Compensation Board to submit a plan of action for the Visitor In-formation Centre and Boundary Muse-um building: they’ll spend up to $9,000 immediately with the understanding that both facilities will likely be in new homes in the near future.2010

The bill continues to rise as vandals damage more and more trees in City Park. On Victoria Day, the City of Grand Forks fi led a report with the RCMP about damage done to 22 new trees, which were planted last fall as part of the Trees for Tomorrow program. An additional 11 trees were damaged in the two days following.

The province announced recently that the mandatory off-road vehicle (ORV) registration would be deferred from June 1 to Nov. 1 to give extra time for off-road users to prepare.

The press release also stated that an ICBC-issued numbered sticker would be available in early fall for those registering an off-road vehicle who would prefer a sticker instead of a registration number plate. The ad-dition of a sticker addresses a key request from off-road motorcycle and snowmobile groups.

The sticker will be a similar size as the number plate, and the com-bined cost for registration and sticker will be the same as with the plate option—$48.

Until the mandatory registration begins on Nov. 1, there is a voluntary one-time registration for operating an ORV on Crown land at the combined cost of $48 for registration certificate and ORV number plate.

Registration can be done at any ICBC Autoplan broker, which in Grand Forks is Dave Dale Insurance or RHC Insurance.

An off-road vehicle is designed for off-highway use and does not meet safety standards for on-highway use. Eligible ORV vehicle types include:

golf cats, snow vehicles, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), trucksters and restricted use motorcycles (RUM).

Doug Zorn, vice-president of the Grand Forks ATV Club, said the club was disappointed by the announcement of the delay.

“It was completely out of the blue,” he said. “Everyone was thinking it was go-ing to be June 1 and according to the news release, only 20,000 of the 200,000 ORVs have been registered. What this does to a lot of us that manage trails out there, it just delays the inevitable that this is going to happen.”

Zorn said it made more sense to have the new regulations in at the start, rather than the end, of the riding season.

“In the beginning we could have brought forward what the club feels would be a more responsible use of ORVs in say the backwoods.”

Zorn said having the delay also means riders will take even longer to accept the new regulations.

“We would rather see them stick to the original schedule,” he said. “What people say now is, ‘Oh well, they didn’t mean it and there’ll be an-other extension in November and another extension.’ Unfortunately, this is what happened in the beginning with this system is that it kept getting postponed until it finally was brought in.”

Zorn said people are upset anyway about the ORV regulations because “they feel it’s a provincial tax grab.”

“A lot of people are upset with any kind of rules and regulations where you have to pay money,” he said. “Inevitably, this will bring more respect to the sport of off-road vehicles. We look forward to whenever that hap-pens.”

Zorn said having the ORV licensing helps increase the responsibility level of the riders. He also believes it will help curb the number of stolen ATVs and ORVs.

“It’s a small percentage of people that are not respectful that are leaving the biggest impression on people,” he said. “The Grand Forks ATV Club has really worked hard to change that impression. But it only takes one person to be acting irresponsible. It seems that that is a long-lasting effect.”

The Gateway “Stektahl” Project is seeing the creation of a David Seven Deers’ basalt hand-sculpted talking story circle erected in the En-twined Tree Park situated in Midway.

The park is located in a residential area be-tween Boundary Central Secondary School and Midway Elementary School. The basalt raven sculpture, at approximate-ly 1.2 metres high, will be framed in 2.4-metre-high post and lintel basalt col-umns (the Gateway), and surrounded by 20 basalt-sculpted sitting stumps, each having an etched ab-original motif designed by David Seven Deers.

The inspiration for this “Gateway” came from Seven Deers, a local ab-original sculptor and au-thor, with an international reputation. Seven Deers has been bringing his sto-ries to the youth of the Boundary over the past two years, which always occur in a traditional out-door story circle.

During the sculpting

process in Grand Forks over this past winter and spring, many classes of students across the Boundary have visited him as he worked.

The Gateway will be a legacy monument that has the potential to be a new place of out-door learning and storytelling for all of the communities of the Boundary. The Gateway is being erected in the Entwined Tree Park at this time. The Entwined Tree Park is a historical ab-original site close to the international Canada/

U.S. border in the centre of the Village of Midway.

On Thursday, June 11, all are invited to attend the unveiling ceremony of the Gateway at the En-twined Tree Park in Mid-way, B.C. This will occur from 10 - 10:45 a.m.

Following the cer-emony, Grade 4 to 7 stu-dents across the Bound-ary will be participating in a number of aborigi-nal cultural activities at the park and surround-ing area.

Also on display will be Boundary student aboriginal artwork with soapstone and fused glass completed during this school year.

The push to designate the Grand Forks section of the Trans Canada Trail non-motorized is a good idea. The fact that pretty much all the stakeholders involved agree is even better. As Grand Forks ATV Club vice-president Doug Zorn says, there are plenty of other trails around for off road vehicles (ORV).

Having ORVs mingling with hikers, joggers and cyclists is not a good idea. Generally, an ORV will take longer to stop and is harder to control in case of any surprises such as a cyclist coming around the corner right at you.

Hikers and joggers can be hard to hear, particu-larly when you are astride a noisy ORV.

Although most ORV riders are good, responsible people, there are those few bad eggs as always who ruin it for everyone.

Riders screaming up and down the trails on ATVs aren’t good for anyone and can severely reduce the life of a paved trail, not to mention cause injuries.

There are still some hurdles to go before the Kettle River Heritage Trail is designated non-motorized but the Grand Forks Community Trails Society and other stakeholders are off to a good start.

The proposal still needs approval from the Rec Sites and Trails division of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources Operations. That ap-proval is expected to come through once Rec Sites and Trails received a letter of support from each of the three local governments.

Who will win the Game of Thrones?

This is a column about my fa-vourite television show, Game of Thrones. It’s a magical, mystical tale about several prominent fami-lies who fight for power and to see who sits on the Iron Throne as the ruler of Westeros. The show, which appears on HBO, is in its fifth sea-son. Each season seems to be bigger and better than the last with more and more characters and even fire breathing dragons.

The show pulls no punches and is definitely not for children. It may also change your thoughts about weddings, which in Game of Thrones usually have far worse go-ings-on than drunken relatives and people doing the chicken dance.

The former King, Joffrey, was a spoiled, impetuous brat. He was cruel and did not treat his family or really anyone very nicely. His

mother Cersei, the queen mother, tried to control him but he wouldn’t listen.

This season, there are two epi-sodes left and several usurpers are circling around the throne eyeing the crown; some have witches be-hind them, some dragons, some are zombies. Time is running out for many them as winter approaches. Winter in Westeros apparently lasts for years and it’s very cold. Kind of like Prince George.

What makes Game of Thrones so interesting is that whatever you think will happen usually doesn’t. The good guys don’t win and often die horrible deaths.

The quote bad guys usually end up on top. But you keep watching just to see if Ramsay Bolton or King Joffrey will get their comeuppance.

The pieces are moving. How-ever, like in real life, quite often what makes the biggest moves and affects the most change is some-thing you don’t see coming and something you may not be able to control, no matter how big your dragon is or how powerful your

sorceress is. In fact, the bigger play-ers are often not the royal families but those who work behind the scenes and create havoc such as the eunuch Varys, also known as the Master of Whisperers or the Spider. Varys has an army of spies “little birds” who always keep him informed of what’s happening. Petyr “Littlefinger” Baeler is one of the other big schemers. He uses his brains and his charm to manipulate the pieces behind the scenes.

Who ends up on the Iron Throne after this season will depend, as always, on who can best play the Game of Thrones.

Flash vs. The HulkAnother big favourite of mine

are comic book shows and mov-ies. Yes, I do get my geek on from time to time. As a kid, I had a zil-lion comics and now as a “mature” adult it’s nice to see many of those heroes come to life on the small. It wasn’t long ago that shows based on comics were pretty laughable.

The Flash has emerged as a top show on the WB Network. The at-tempted romance between alter ego

Barry Allen and Iris West seemed forced. She was quite annoying as a character who had a fiancé but obviously still loves Barry, who she had grown up with. That aside, the banter between Flash/Barry and his crew at Star Labs is very entertaining and funny. The mys-tery of who killed his mother and sent his father to jail and whether he could save them was well done. The season one ending episode was also well developed with the tricky subject of The Flash going back in time using the “speed force.” I look forward to future seasons and defi-nitely more of the telepathic giant gorilla Grodd.

On the big screen, I caught Avengers 2: Age of Ultron at the GEM Theatre recently. Another strong, entertaining entry in the series. It wasn’t as good as the first. Defi-nitely lacked the “Oh wow” factor of seeing so many well-developed characters on screen at once. The new heroes, Quick Silver and his sister the Scarlet Witch, were good as well and will hopefully be seen more in future movies.

Letters to the editor Breaking boards,breaking chains

Earlier this year in Nelson, I had the pleasure of meeting members of a grassroots enterprise called Justice at the Junc-tion to discuss world slavery and other justice issues. One member of this group, Dean Siminoff, is the head instructor of the Kootenay Christian Martial Arts schools in our area and founder of Martial Arts For Justice.

Thanks to Dean and others, their “Breaking Boards, Breaking Chains” campaign raised $16,000 in 2014, bringing awareness and support to the victims of slavery and oppression in third world countries. This year they are hoping to exceed those numbers. The dem-onstration of board breaking and traditional weapons at the Nelson Civic Theatre on April 18, and the showing of the movie Karate Kid afterward, were a great step in that direc-tion, as was the Pete Seeger Memorial fundraiser on Jan. 31.

Although the issue is not highly reported in Canadian me-dia, some statistics that were brought to my attention leave little doubt that this is indeed a cause worth supporting. In Canada, according to the RCMP, between 800 and 1,200 peo-ple are trafficked through the country annually, many for the purposes of prostitution and forced labour.

Meanwhile, on the global stage, the number of people held in slavery has been put as high as 36 million. The penalties for human trafficking are seldom enforced. For example in India, slave owners are more likely to be hit by lightning than to go to jail.

Events like “Breaking Boards, Breaking Chains” can make a big difference in the lives of many people both here at home and in the developing world. Martial Arts for Justice has partnered with the International Justice Mission (IJM), an NGO whose mandate includes protecting poor people from violence, ensuring crimes are prosecuted, and working to rehabilitate and support the survivors of slavery, abuse, and marginalization. I recently read a chilling account of the world of human trafficking written by the founder of IJM, Gary Haugen. A tremendous amount of effort is needed to end this despicable practice in the world. All funds raised from admission to demonstrations like the one on April 18 as well as donations received go directly to the International Justice Mission.

Martial Arts for Justice and their affiliated group, Justice at the Junction, continue a great tradition of West Kootenay resi-dents supporting important causes and making a difference. I am proud of the work that these great citizens are doing and I would encourage everyone to keep an eye out for future events in the area. As a student of karate for the last 40 years, I am happy that the martial arts potential to help humanity is being realized in this way and I offer the members of Martial Arts for Justice my full support and encouragement in their great endeavour.

Editor, The Gazette:It is with great sadness that

we have decided to dissolve the Boundary Dog Sled Association.

It became apparent at the last board meeting that most of the key directors of the association are moving on with their lives and no longer have the time to devote to be able to put together a huge un-dertaking like the Boundary Dog Sled Classics Sprint Races.

Since nobody stepped forward

at the annual general meeting in April to pick up the reins, we had to make the hard decision to dis-solve the association.

After much deliberation it was decided that the funds left in the bank account after paying off any outstanding bills were equally dis-tributed between local associations with a focus on animals.

The recipients were the Grand Forks and District Fall Fair, the Boundary Multi 4-H club, the

Boundary Horse Association, the Boundary C 4-H Club (Rock Creek), the Boundary Sheep 4-H Club and the Rock Creek Fall Fair.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to everybody who donated their time, money and support to us over the years. We hope to revive the dog races in the future.

a downtown parking spot and left my wallet and mail on top of my vehicle hood.

I thank God for the individual who was honest and quick think-

ing as to take the items to the post office where the mail was from.

As I frantically looked for my wallet/mail, my hubby suggested I check at the post office. Sure enough, the items had been turned in there. It is such a relief to know

pesky tourists coming from across Canada to see and take photos of them (just had people from Ontar-io and Vancouver to see our deer,

saw one).What is next? Should get rid of

those pesky seniors after all, they stop in the street to visit. Drive too slow, ride in traffic on electric carts, take up way too much time at the doctor’s office.

What about pets? We have just

culled (killed) off one of the last reasons people had to stop here.

It’s a sad day for Grand Forks when a very small minority can speak for everyone, but that seems to be the trend here.

Open questions relate to spending

Councillor deserves our support

Editor, The Gazette:As a ratepayer I am greatly con-

cerned with the rising cost of munici-pal government. Therefore, I have a number of “open” questions for city council to answer in regard to munici-pal spending:

A $200,000 severance was paid out to our CAO who was dismissed and then rehired. Why has there been no effort to mitigate the CAO’s losses for the period of time he was “unemployed” and a request made for the balance to be re-turned to the city coffers, thus eliminat-ing the perception of double dipping?

The amount of $175,000 is the an-

nounced estimated cost to remediate a gravel pit. Why was the gravel pit “over-excavated” to the point that it compromised a fence and power lines? Where was the oversight to ensure safe operation of the pit? Why is the estimated cost announced prior to seek-ing tender? Will there be any tenders lower than the established baseline of $175,000?

Under whose direction was Urban Systems hired to the tune of $5,000 -$7,000 to outline options for complet-ing water meter installations? Do we really need to pay thousands of dollars for “experts” to state the obvious?

Council allocated $20,000 to hire extra staff to comply with FOI requests. Was there any consideration given to the temporary reallocation of existing staff to do this work? Was there abso-lutely nothing that could be temporar-ily put on hold? Was it really necessary to hire extra staff when City Hall is full of employees?

Since council has embarked on a costly initiative, the disqualification of a councilor, how much will this add to our tax burden?

Editor, The Gazette:The latest fiasco from five of our city

councilors is their attempt to get rid of Councilor Julia Butler on what I believe is a ridiculous allegation of conflict of interest. I don’t understand how they think they can get away with this, as neither I nor anyone else I have spoken to can see any conflict of interest what-soever. It’s laughable. They are trying to drum her out on some trumped-up charges. She previously operated a yard maintenance business. How was that even a conflict?

By trying to oust her, they are really showing their hand ... in my opinion, indicators are that those five appear to have some sort of hidden agenda.

Ms. Butler was properly elected by a rather large portion of the public vote, and has done nothing but honour us by doing her best in representing the

majority of residents of this community. In my opinion she is doing a great job. Why are the other councilors trying to oust her? Is she some sort of threat to them?

Oh, don’t forget ... it was an “in camera” (this means in private) council decision. These “in camera” meetings of these councilors are ridiculous, and very suspicious. They are supposed to be acting in the “best interest” of the community. How does all this secrecy benefit the community, when we don’t even know what’s going on?

Do you feel comfortable with a coun-cil that won’t tell you what is going on? Who is able to trust a council that does things behind closed doors and won’t let anyone know what happened until they are forced to reveal it by official Freedom of Information requests? I believe the majority of Grand Forks

residents were always against the water meter program the former council implemented.

Councilor Butler should not be penalized in any way for supporting the majority of residents on this or any other issue. In my opinion, she is a voice of the majority, and the other council members are trying to squash that voice. Why?

Rather than try to oust somebody, don’t you think it’s time for council to work things out instead of picking on one another?

What’s happening with Grand Forks council is very disturbing! Come on! Let’s get back on track, after all we have a beautiful city to live in.

Phase 1 (paved section from Roxul to the Nursery Trestle) was completed in 2013; phase 2 is 7.1 kilometres from Nursery Trestle to Gilpin Creek; Phase 3 is 8.3 kilometres from Gilpin Creek to west side of Cascade Trestle.

“Having non-motorized designation would bring pro-vincial and federal funding, improve access to two new provincial parks and create a designated highway pull-out for a new day use park at Gilpin Creek,” said Moslin. “Designation would require local elected officials to write a letter of support for non-motorized designation to Rec Sites and Trails. Rec Sites and Trails would need to hold pub-lic meetings in the area.”

Moslin added that it would be up to Rec Sites and Trails to make the designation and en-force the non-motorized rule.

Moslin said three decisions came out of the meeting:

1. That local governments would write a letter of sup-port for the designation of the KRHT section of the Trans Can-ada Trail as non-motorized,

2. That local government would make trails a prior-ity through the Boundary Eco-nomic Development Commit-tee; and,

3. That the region would move to apply for significant federal funding in a January 2016 intake of the Strategic Pri-orities Fund.

“We believe that if we put this amount of money into this development to pave the trail it will have a significant econom-ic impact on the whole region,” said Moslin.

“It’ll bring more investment and care for all our trails—the Trans Canada Trail and the backcountry trails. We have a wealth of that kind of resource that really is something we can share.”

Moslin said that the Grand Forks ATV Club is in support of the non-motorized designa-tion.

“They see the economic and

community benefits,” he said. “Basi-cally, they already built parallel trails on the other side of the highway. They are partners on board.”

Doug Zorn, vice-president of the GFATV, said he was at a meeting of the Regional District of Okanagan Similka-meen when they had overtaken the management of the Trans Canada Trail in that area and was very impressed with the organization and management.

“I talked to Chris (Moslin) and Ten-nessee Trent when I got back and sug-gested we have a meeting of the govern-ment officials who were involved and see what they thought of that kind of a commitment from the regional district,” said Zorn. “As well, Chris wanted to put through the idea of a non-motorized trail from Cascade west to Nursery Bridge.”

Zorn said the GFATV feels that the area of the Trans Canada Trail is very sensitive and there are enough other great trails to ride.

“What the club did put forward at the meeting is that we would like to see a permitted ride for educational purpos-es once a year,” he said. “We would go through the area and point out the Ox-bows and the benefits of the grassland parks and of the area itself and gain use-ful knowledge in the wildlife and the environment.”

Grace McGregor, Area C/Christina Lake director and RDKB board chair, said it was a really good meeting.

“A lot of people have done a lot of work,” she said. “We need to work to-gether—that was what the message was. Most of us are willing to go there.”

McGregor agreed that having the KVHT trails non-motorized was a good idea because of the abundance of other ATV trails.

“All in all, the meeting itself, I think, was a whole group of trail users from the area working together—and I think the message was a really good one,” she said.

McGregor did say she is not in favour of paving the Christina Lake section of the trail.

“Christina Lake Parks and Rec have been pretty clear that they’re not in fa-vour of paving that,” she said.

“I haven’t brought that up to them this year but we could have that con-versation. I won’t put up money to have a trail paved right now…what I’ve heard is a lot of areas that have that paved trail for a while the weeds come right through. When that hap-pens you’ve got an even bigger issue because the pavement starts to crack. So I don’t think that’s the total answer we need yet.”

Donaldson business broken intoB&E on Donaldson

On May 25 at 8:04 p.m., police re-ceived a report of a break and enter from a business on Donaldson Drive.

“An unknown suspect had broken through a mail slot in the door and en-tered the building,” said Cpl. Richard Lanz of the Grand Forks RCMP detach-ment. “Stolen from the building was a laptop and some gas cards.”

At this time the matter is still being investigated. “A suspect has come to light from the investigation,” said Lanz.Youth cause disturbance

On May 26 at 6:50 p.m., RCMP re-ceived a complaint of a disturbance at a residence on 16th Street.

“Police attended and noted a large group of youth on the patio,” said Lanz. “Upon approaching, the police noted one individual holding a bag of mari-juana. The marijuana was seized.”

No charges were forwarded.Parking lot hit and run

On May 28 at 1 p.m., police respond-ed to a report of a hit and run in the Overwaitea parking lot.

“An unknown vehicle struck the side door of a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier,” said Lanz. “At this time it is unknown what the suspect vehicle was.”

The amount of damage is estimated at around $300. Lanz said the unknown vehicle backed into the parked Cavalier, struck it and then took off.Marijuana in motel room

On May 28 at 9:10 p.m., police attend-ed a room at the Ramada Inn regarding a previous incident.

“Upon attendance, a strong odour of marijuana was detected coming from the room,” said Lanz. “When the oc-cupant of the room was questioned re-garding (the smell), 13 grams of mari-juana was turned over to the offi cer.”

No charges are being submitted.

Hit and run on highwayOn May 28 at 3:30 p.m., RCMP re-

ceived a report of a hit and run that occurred on Highway 3 just outside of Grand Forks.

“The report said that a silver mini-van was trying to pass a tractor-trailer unit and ran out of passing lane,” said Lanz. “The vehicle continued to pass the tractor-trailer and ended up side-swip-ing a vehicle traveling east by hitting the side mirror of the vehicle.”

The make and model or licence plate of the vehicle was not obtained. There were no injuries.

“There’s not enough information to fi nd the vehicle,” said Lanz.Single vehicle MVA

On May 30 at 6:30 p.m., police re-ceived a report of a single vehicle inci-dent off Cove Road in Christina Lake.

“A white Toyota pick-up went down a westbound embankment,” said Lanz. “The driver of the vehicle sustained a head injury and was taken to Bound-ary Hospital where he was evaluated by hospital personnel.”

Lanz said the car was going too fast for the rainy and wet conditions of the

road and began to hydroplane, crossed the centre line and entered the ditch.

“The driver of the vehicle admitted he had been tired and had just been working for several days in a row,” said Lanz. “The vehicle was removed and the driver was issued a ticket for failing to keep his vehicle to the right.”

The driver was a 34-year-old male from Nelson. Driver arrested

On May 31 at 10:14 p.m. police were on patrol on Carson Road and observed a vehicle going 150 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

“The vehicle was stopped and the driver did not have a valid driver’s li-cence and there was no insurance on the vehicle,” said Lanz. “There was also a stolen validation tag on the plate. The driver was arrested and searched.”

As a result of the search, police found a quantity of marijuana and metham-phetamines on him.

The driver, a 67-year-old Grand Forks resident, was charged with hav-ing no insurance, no driver’s licence, and excessive speeding. The vehicle was impounded due to the excessive speed-ing charge.

Lanz said that charges are being for-warded for possession of methamphet-amines and marijuana.

Christina Lake Fire Department wel-comed the community on Saturday at an open house. It was a good day with lots of burgers and hot dogs, and the kids had a blast, said Fire Chief Ken Gresley-Jones. Firefi ght-ers erected a blow-up water slide, set up the fi re house out of Trail (right), and hosted several activi-ties and live training in the use of fi re extinguishers both for kids and adults (below).

Fire appears to have been intentionally setA fire at a North Fork acreage Monday

This from Grand Forks RCMP detach-ment Cpl. Richard Lanz, who cautioned that the matter is still being investigated.

He would not comment at this time if there were any injuries, but did say no neighbouring structures were damaged.

Grand Forks Fire/Rescue Chief Dale Heriot reported the department was called at about 3:30 p.m. to a structure fire on Brown Creek Road North that included a shop, barn, outbuilding and house.

The department responded with three

engines, two water tenders and two com-mand vehicles.

“As we arrived on scene the outbuild-ings were fully involved and there was light smoke coming out of the house,” Heriot said. “We set up water shuttle op-erations and worked the fire until about 12:30 a.m.”

A total of 31 firefighters responded

through out the duration of the fire. “We also called Christina Lake Fire De-

partment as mutual aid to provide support in allowing all of the firefighters to have a rest and receive fluids and nourishment,” Heriot said.

The Christina Lake department re-sponded with an engine and a crew of five firefighters.

“Fortunately we have a very good working relationship with their department and they have always done a fantastic job for us when called upon.”

Firefighting in a rural setting always provides unique chal-lenges as almost ev-ery rural situation is different, the chief added.

“Some driveways are very long, some very steep, some nar-row, etc. Access and setup is always a challenge,” Heriot ex-plained. “As well we make our firefighters understand that we need to be even more efficient with water usage in rural areas. Unfortunately there are very few locations on the river that are accessible with our big equipment. We al-ways have to be aware of banks sloughing or our apparatus sinking in soft ground.”

Heriot said that in this situation there was a pond at the neighbours but with the shallow water ta-ble in the area, he was concerned about soft ground.

“The crew has be-come very proficient in shuttling water and we are very suc-cessful at shuttling without running out of water. I’m pretty confident that in most situations we can pro-vide continuous wa-ter by shuttle. This is how we were able to receive the Superior Water Tanker Shuttle Certification from Fire Underwriters Survey, which provides an insurance saving for rural residents within a specified distance from a fire hall.”

More than 200 cyclists partici-pated in the annual Robb’s Ride this past weekend in Grand Forks.

The riders rode for three days and covered over 370 kilometres with trips up the North Fork, up either Sherman Pass or Boulder Creek Pass and out to the West Boundary. This is the ninth year of Robb’s Ride. The riders, who came from as far away as Saskatchewan and Oregon, also managed to raise $5,000 to send youth with fi nan-cial barriers to Pine’s Bible Camp.

Carol Mitchell, child and youth counsellor at Boundary Family and Individual Services Society, said the organization had no mon-ey in their fund to send kids to Pines this year—but that changed with the donation from Robb’s Ride.

“That was amazing,” she said. “I had no idea they could raise that much. It means it can hap-pen this year. Traditionally we’ve had some good donations but this year we had nothing in the fund and we were already telling fami-lies who can’t afford (to send their kids) that we couldn’t do it.”

Mitchell said the donation means that every child BFISS wanted to send will get to go to Pines.

Cooking shows are very popular TV viewing, drawing high ratings for shows with titles such as Hell’s Kitchen, Cutthroat Kitchen, Feasting on As-phalt, to name just a few.

On the other hand, Cable Access TV—Riv-ers’ Edge Theatre Society—brings us The Kitchen Witches. Presented for three nights at the Chris-tina Living Arts Centre as dinner theatre ca-tered by Lisa’s Lakeside Bistro, there’s no need to be sorry if you missed it. Rivers’ Edge will also bring the witches’ tale to Grand Forks and Greenwood.

At the heart of the play is Dolly Biddle (played by Norma Bicknell) and Isobel “Izzy” Lomax (Diane Korol). There’s actually few characters: the show’s cast is filled out by producer Stephen Biddle (Mike Tollis) and camera girl Robbie (Clo-rice Metcalfe). A guest judge makes a surprise appearance. And that’s it.

But that’s much of the magic of The Kitchen Witches.

The play opens on the last episode of Dolly’s show Cooking with Babcha. Izzy Lomax, Dolly’s long-time enemy (well, Izzy did steal her hus-band, after all), makes an appearance. After wit-nessing the chemistry between the pair, the net-work decides to launch a new show. And so The Kitchen Witches takes to the airwaves.

The plot is engaging and funny, with a good twist in the middle. The ending is predictable, but that’s just fine. It’s entertainment, and there was no doubt the audience was entertained.

Great acting from all of the cast ensured that; the quiet presence of Robbie moving around with a hand-held camera subtly added to each scene.

There isn’t a lot of space at the Living Arts Centre for dinner tables and a stage set to boot. But that simply helped the audience feel as if it was in fact part of the audience of the TV show. Stage manager Mike Elliott, stage crew member James Elliott, stage crew member and props mis-tress Shawna Reichelt, and producer Ted Invic-tus ensured the experience was top-notch. From the “Applause/On Air” sign to the lighting and music to the signs on the dressing room doors, theatre-goers were immersed in the show—both shows.

Written by Caroline Smith, the Rivers’ Edge production is directed by Margo Evers.

“It takes a community to bring community theatre to life. Without the dedication of back-stage volunteers, without local businesses sup-port and without citizens loaning their treasures for use in the play, The Kitchen Witches would not have enjoyed three sold-out shows at Chris-tina Lake,” Invictus said.

The Kitchen Witches is presented at the GEM Theatre on June 5, 6 and 7 at 7 p.m. It will also be presented at the McArthur Centre in Green-wood on June 13 at 7 p.m. and June 14 at 2 p.m. The Grand Forks and Greenwood shows do not feature dinner.

Tickets are $15, available at gallery 2 and Pharmasave in Grand Forks and Race Trac Gas in Greenwood.

The final touches are being made in prepara-tion for the 2015 version of the Boundary Coun-try Relay For Life.

The relay will be taking place this year at City Park for the first time ever. The event goes on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

So far, $14,057 has been raised by the relay par-ticipants led by $2,391 by the Overwaitea team, O v e r C a n c e r . Jazzercise Grand

Forks has raised $2,285, while the Golden Oldies have raised $1,637.

Gazette reporter Craig Lindsay will be getting his head shaved at the relay Saturday. He has raised over $750 for the relay, far surpassing his

goal of $500. Anyone wishing to

donate can still do so by going to relayfor-life.ca and search for Boundary Country.

Also, be sure to check out the relay Saturday if you can and cheer on the par-ticipants and maybe watch someone get their head shaved.

Research saves lives. Aw shucks—Fair presents oyster galaThere will be a whole lot of shucking and a little bit of

clucking down at Dick Bartlett Park on Saturday, June 20. The Grand Forks Fall Fair is putting on Shuck and Cluck,

a gala evening of fresh oysters from Cortez Island along with a menu of elegant food provided by Twisted Fork Ca-tering. This will be the first Shuck and Cluck gala and the organizers hope it will become an annual tradition.

“We have a gentleman who lives on Cortez Island (Brent Petkau) who comes over monthly and goes to Nelson,” said Kelly McIver, secretary/treasurer of the fall fair asso-ciation. “A group of interested people meet with him and purchase oysters, mussels and clams, in season, on his way through. (The idea for an oyster event) started from there.”

McIver said the idea started as just oysters but they de-cided on salads and eventually it became a full- blown meal with a chicken option for spouses and friends who may not like oysters.

McIver said Petkau, also known as the Oyster Man, will be cooking the oysters himself. The oysters will be pre-pared several ways including barbecued, raw, smokey, on the half shell and more. There will also be four to five dip-ping sauces available.

“When he comes he brings his long box pick-up truck with two big refrigerator coolers,” she said. “You can get big ones or small ones. He supplies you with what you want.”

McIver said the oysters are always fresh and come from Cortez Island, which is one of the Gulf Islands near Camp-bell River.

“They’re awesome,” she said.The cluck part of the menu will be chicken neptune

prepared by Twisted Fork. There will also be two kinds of salad, several sides and delicious appetizers including clam chowder shooters, smoked oyster canapés, Jerseyland cheese and smoked salmon.

The event will also feature background music performed by John Zibin. Local spirits will also be available.

The Shuck and Cluck Gala will be a fundraiser for the fall fair association to help pay for live music at the fair, which goes Aug. 28-30 this year.

The fall fair is also putting on a duck race on Canada Day this year to raise money and awareness about the fair. For only $5, you get a yellow ducky. All the ducks will be placed in the water at the black train bridge and the first one to cross the finish line at City Park gets $500 (the owner of the duck, not the duck itself).

“It’s one of the festivity events on July 1,” said McIver. “All proceeds goes to the entertainment of the Grand Forks Fall Fair.”

Kelly said that planning for this year’s fall fair has gone very well. The theme for the 2015 fair, the 105th overall fair, is Life in the Boundary, Then and Now.

Integrated management the best approachHow many of you remember what the

Boundary looked like back in the ’80s and ’90s? In some areas the knapweed was over a metre tall and so thick you could barely walk through it.

The knapweed that was the biggest problem back then was the diffuse knap-weed which has white fl owers. There was

also some spotted knapweed which has the pinkish purple fl owers.

At one time, the knapweed covered the hillsides of the grasslands and could be found all over the ranges. In the Gilpin area there were four different biological control agents released for knapweed be-tween 1982 and 1996. There was one moth and three weevils.

Some mine out the roots and some feed on the seeds. They also defoliate the plant

by eating the leaves and chewing on the stems.

There was a fl y released in other ar-eas that have spread to Gilpin over time. Some of the insects that don’t fl y are still released, as they spread a lot more slowly.

Since the fi rst releases were done, the use of herbicide has decreased for use on knapweed. The Gilpin grasslands look so much better than they did back in the ’80s and ’90s.

In order to preserve the native plant communities of the Gilpin grasslands and keep balance in the ecosystem we need to protect the Gilpin and other areas from in-vasive plants.

The most effective way to do that is to use an approach called integrated man-agement which includes using a combina-tion of herbicide, manual control and bio-logical control.

Manual treatments like pulling, burn-ing and disking work well in some loca-tions but are not always practical for large infestations. In most cases, the location of the infestation determines the type of treatment.

Biological control is effective in the long-term. Herbicide is effi cient in control-ling the problem immediately. Hand pull-ing takes about three years before you see a big difference.

Some plants like hoary alyssum have no biological control, so chemical and manual control are the only options.

To fi nd out how Dalmatian toadfl ax used to affect the Gilpin area, you should stay tuned. A series of articles will explain how the Boundary went from being one of the weediest districts in B.C. to looking better than it has in decades.

Check out the outdoor fitness park outside the aquatic centre. Make it a part of your morning routine and enjoy an outdoor workout or stop by after work and com-plete an evening workout.

A description for the use and benefit of each piece of equipment is provided at each station. There is no fee to use the outdoor park and it is available at anytime for your convenience.

Pickle ball is a fast growing sport among the seniors but it is not restricted to only seniors. The Whitecaps program has really good coaching and have a lot of soccer knowledge to pass down, so it is a very good program if you want to get serious and competitive with soccer.”

Jack was born May 18, 1960 to Doukhobor parents Mike and

Pauline Makortoff and was a lifelong member of the USCC.

Jack was a very giving and loving individual with strong ties to his family. He most loved gardening and had an organic farm on the family’s land, growing or-ganic vegetables and was known as the tomato king!

In the last nine years his health deteriorated and forced him to step back from physical work. On May 18, 2015 they day of his 55th birthday, he was rushed to the hospital after a battle with pneumonia. He was transferred to Trail Hospital were on the evening of May 19, he peacefully passed away with his family by his side.

He was predeceased by his father Mike Makortoff in 2000, as well as grandparents and other extended family. he leaves behind his mother Pauline Makor-toff, brothers Michael, Dmitri and Yuri – nieces Amy, Trina, Kalyeena and Chelsea – great nieces Alanna, Taya, Rowan and great nephew Aden – as well as many other relatives and friends. He will be deeply missed and remembered by all who knew him.

May God accept his soul into his Heavenly Kingdom and may he rest in peace.

A celebration of Jack’s life was held on Monday, May 25 in Grand Forks, B.C. at the USCC.

Canada Day is just around the corner and it is a good time to reflect on all the benefits we enjoy in this wonderful country and especially in this community of Grand Forks and surrounding area.

Coming to this area in 1995, we couldn’t help but marvel at the warm sunshine, the rivers and the lakes and sport that went with it—the snow skiing, the river rafting, the fishing and hunting, swimming and boating, and camping places ev-erywhere.

But we did not come here just to play. We came here to work and this area has always been con-nected to the soil, the earth and its abun-dance that could only bring us a good living by hard work.

The Doukhobors came look-ing for a new life in this country and making it happen working the fields, harvesting the grain, and the fruit with their own hands and tools. There were the farmers put-ting in irrigation to help produce abundant potato crops, luscious hay fields. Fruit, vegetables, flowers and all kinds of trees became the spe-cialty of nurseries throughout the area bringing employment to many in the spring, summer and fall.

But that is not all—the axe, chain-saw and big equipment harvested the hills and mountainside, truck-ers hauling logs to the sawmills bringing another large industry to the area. The long history of mining is still with us today—even the slag piles are being refined to make insu-lation and abrasives.

Many have also come here to teach in our schools, to bring heal-ing in our hospital and long term care homes, to bring good gover-nance to our cities and towns. Many churches bring together those who

want to express and grow in their faith.

Outstanding in this area is the spirit of volunteerism—whether at the thrift stores, or Grand Forks International, the many sport teams for children and adults, fundraisers for cancer and the vibrant groups in drama and music.

But our list of benefits must also include our Canadian way of get-ting along together, whether we have roots in Russia, Ukraine, Ger-many, Holland, England, Scotland, Japan, Aboriginal Canada, India or elsewhere. Even our parliament is set up to have the official opposi-tion to keep the majority or minor-ity governing body in check.

So we have learned and are still learning to build a consensus of all

points of view being heard, and we want to keep this tradition. Let us not give in to my way versus his/her way but rather learn from one another and build a united future.

There may even be times we make mistakes that are costly but we want to learn from them and go on.

I remember being in a school choir that sang in a church. After-ward, the hosting church served us refreshments. We were enjoying the food and the fellowship when a server, carrying a large kettle, spilled the hot coffee onto our in-structor’s lap, while pouring the coffee into his cup.

The steam was rising from the instructor’s wool pants. He calmly said, “O the warmth of fellowship!” We all laughed but it was at his ex-pense. We knew him to be a forgiv-ing person.

So this Canada Day may we count our blessings and determine not to lose anyone of them. United we stand...and may we pray, “God, keep our land glorious and free.”
