During the month of March, Jan Roser will be the North Tampa Art League Artist of the Month at the New Tampa Regional Library, 10001 Cross Creek Blvd., Tampa.

Although she has been formally trained in languages, music and Anthropology, Jan’s passion is photography. She has been photographing for over 25 years, making it a full time avocation during the last four years.

While interested in shooting all types of subjects, Jan’s favorite themes lie in nature. She pairs her Sony DSLR camera with computer software to create a virtual digital darkroom in which to manipulate and enhance many of her shots.

Jan has enjoyed membership in the North Tampa Arts League for four years and has exhibited often at various venues. Her achievements include several awards for her work.

Congratulations go out to Turner Elementary's Teacher of the Year for 2011-12.....Ms. Summers! Ms. Summers is a third grade teacher but does much for all of Turner's students as well as its faculty and staff. We appreciate your hard work and dedication!

Turner Elementary's Ida S. Baker Teacher of the Year for 2011-12 is.....Ms. Kurtright! Ms. Kurtright loves working with all Turner students as the school's Media Specialist and has the pleasure of sharing with students about reading and literacy. Also awarded recently was Mrs. Martel, the Media Secretary, as Turner's Non-Instructional Employee of the Year. Mrs. Martel works alongside Ms. Kurtright in the Media Center and does a tremendous amount to assist with the book collection as well as to keep our school technology in top working condition. Thank you for your hard work Ms. Kurtright and Mrs. Martel!

event organizer couldn’t have been more pleased with the day. “It’s just a great community event. Each year, I continue to be amazed and so proud of the support New Tampa shows for our high school and education.” Everyone who participated was treated to a healthy start breakfast of granola, bananas & fruit and Cabot Cheese. The Wharton Wildcat warmed the runners up with an energetic callisthenic routine fueled by rockin’ music pumped out by Paul Gigante of Gigante Productions. William Hineline, a first grader at Hunter’s Green Elementary summed up the day’s enthusiasm after finishing the one mile run with arms

raised and a beaming smile, “I ran the entire race without stopping and it was awesome!” James Berndt was first to cross the line with a time of 18.00. More than 70 medals and awards were given out to runners ages 8 to age 60+ and that's just the 5K participants. The runners, walkers & sponsors helped raise more than $5,000 this year. The funds go directly back to funding Wharton teacher mini-grants or “wishes” for technology and equipment upgrades, additional computers and printers, education subscriptions and so much more. v

I had never heard of volunteer Guardians ad Litem (GALs) until I was introduced to the program by a neighbor. Once he described what GALs do I knew that I had found the volunteer work that I had long sought. The work is often difficult and frustrating but the victories are sweet because they benefit a child who has no other voice in the system. To help a child who has suffered neglect, abuse or abandonment, to a place where their lives will be happier, safer and more loving is so fulfilling. Sometimes it takes a while for the child to open up to you. You can be a stable, reliable presence for them and usually they come to realize this. You can take their desires and wishes to the judge. You are their voice, they have no other. As a Guardian ad Litem you will:• help ensure that a child is in a safe environment where they are able to thrive until permanency has been achieved.• be a mentor for child who desperately
