Grand Knight’s Report
Worthy Brothers,
Lent is here and you know what that means … Fasting, Penance and Almsgiving! Lent is a time for us to
get closer to God. I encourage you to use this Lenten season to go to confession and pray daily. Give alms
and make a difference through your charitable spirit. You will find peace
and renewal in Lent!
This month the devotional theme for March is for the special veneration of
the protector and patron of the universal Catholic Church, St. Joseph. St.
Joseph is a very important Patron for us. He has been declared the guard-
ian and protector of the Holy Family. What is striking about St. Joseph is
that he is only mentioned by name in the bible. There is no record of any
words spoken. What we do know is that St. Joseph was obedient to God,
humble and hard-working, compassionate to the Holy Mother and a loving
Foster Father to our Lord. Isn’t his example what we should all strive to
be with our families? Keep St. Joseph close to you and your families this
month. You will see that St. Joseph can be a powerful intercessor for your
family.
February was a very busy month for us! Kudos to everyone who helped
pull off one of the most highly serviceable months in recent history. We started the month with our monthly
meeting, SLCS spaghetti dinner, Chicken and Sausage sale, Scouts Blue and Gold banquet. Then followed
it with a great start to Lent with the first Fish Fry, Rays of Enlightenment and the Family Food Pantry drive
at the Mamie George Community Center. Thanks to all who stepped in to participate and help!
Our Membership Director has been busy getting new members into our council. This month we welcome
two new 3rd Degree members to our council, Brother Stephen P. Noe and Brother Carlos A. Soriano! Both
received the Degree of Charity, Unity and Fraternity at the Inaugural Exemplification Ceremonial held at the
Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on Saturday, February 29th. Brothers Stephen and Carlos joined 60 other
new Brothers and their families for this historical Archdiocesan event. We also welcome two additional
brothers to our council as transfers: Brother Ian Cullen and Brother Christopher Hlavac.
I also congratulate four Brothers from our council who received the title and honor of Sir Knight at the re-
cent Exemplification at St. Helens Catholic Church in Pearland: Melwyn Alleluia, John Baker, Travis Baugh-
man and Ken Burke. Congratulations Sir Knights! The next Fourth degree exemplification will be in Sealy,
TX. Keep a look out for details at the next meeting.
At the next meeting, we will present a check to SLCS Leos Club. Several SLCS students recently helped at
Clergy Night, Chicken and Sausage, Mamie George Food Fair and Fish Fry. Please join me in congratulating
and recognizing these fine students for their dedication and service work. We also welcome some special
guests, Clare and Anna Cey, daughters of Brother Knight Brad Cey to come speak to us about their upcom-
ing speech and debate tournament on March 12-14th at Houston Baptist University. They will make a spe-
cial request of the council.

Insurance Agent Report
A Spring-Cleaning Suggestion
March brings thoughts of spring and a variety of spring-cleaning projects. When was the last time you re-
viewed your family’s financial security plan? Have you in the past 5 years changed jobs, added another child
or two, retired or getting close to retirement, taken on the responsibility of caring for a parent? These are just
a few examples of life changes that can affect your family finances. Now is a great time to do a Spring
cleaning/checkup of your family’s financial security.
As your Knights of Columbus Field Agent, I’ve been trained to help you through that important exercise. I’ll
take the time to do a free financial needs analysis by gathering information from you, asking about your
wants, needs and desires, and then putting together recommendations to help you meet those needs.
With a wide range of products: life insurance, long-term care insurance, disability income insurance and
retirement annuities, I can help you plan for your family’s financial security now and for many years to come.
All with the safety and security of dealing with a company that shares your faith and beliefs and invests in
accordance with Church teaching.
Get ready for spring, get your home freshened up and make sure your financial house is spruced up. It’s an
easy and friendly visit from me, a brother Knight.
Vivat Jesus!

Deacon’s Corner:
Brothers, this month we begin again the season
of Lent with a two challenges: First, Father
Drew has asked for a parish penance of no tele-
vision, no social media, no video games on
March 4th, 5th and 6th.
Second, Respect Life needs our help on Friday
March 20th to pray at Planned Parenthood on
the Gulf Freeway standing up for 40 days for
Life. We need to step up and “Into the Breach”
as Knights.
Be a eucharistic Knight fighting for good and
defeating evil.

PRAYER FOR THE UNBORN
We should make it a habit to pray daily for the
lives of the unborn. Here is a very short and
easy to remember prayer by Archbishop Ful-
ton J. Sheen:
Jesus, Mary, Joseph,
I love you very much.
I beg you to spare the life of the
unborn child that I have spiritual-
ly adopted, who is in danger of
abortion. Amen.

REMINDER: We will have our council group photo this Thursday at the parish hall. Please arrive no later than 6:30 p.m. We will
take the photo immediately before the meeting. The Catholic Daughters of America Court #2402 will prepare and cook the dinner
for our March meeting. Please be generous with any donations.
This past weekend we kicked off our Lenten Fish Frys. You’ll notice we resurrected our tabletop advertisement program this year.
First Tire and Automotive is our lead sponsor this year and is owned and operated by Craig and Nancy Popp. Special thanks to our
lead and support sponsors for helping us support our many charities. Please show your gratitude by patronizing their business if
you have a chance.
Announcements:
• KC Holy Hour in March: The KC Holy Hour scheduled for March 7th is CANCELLED. The chapel will be closed for Holy Adoration
due to Spring Break. We will resume in April.
• Parks Youth Ranch GO FISH event (April 4th): This event is coming in a month. We will need volunteers for cooking hamburgers
and hot dogs for the youth at Parks Youth Ranch. Mark your calendars and watch for details to volunteer!
• KC Sponsored Pet Adoption: Our council is hosting the Fort Bend County Animal Services group for a pet adoption showcase on
the grass area near the Parish Hall and Chapel. The pet showcase will be held on Friday, March 13th during the Fish Fry. Look
for details in next Sunday’s parish bulletin. Thanks to PGK Gary Arrington for Chairing this event.
• KC Calendar Fundraiser: We have distributed 657 calendars to 56 sellers. We need MASS participation to hit our calendar
goal to sell 875 calendars. Let’s get those calendars sold. All proceeds support our charities, but we need EVERYONE to help.
Contact Co-Chairs Peter Curran at [email protected] or Nicholas Olache, [email protected] if you need more calen-
dars or information.
• KC Essay Scholarship Contest: We launched our Essay Scholarship contest this month for Middle School and High School stu-
dents. Details can be found on our web page and parish bulletin. I want to recognize the Essay Scholarship Committee for
their hard work to get the judging process and contest launch organized. Special thanks to PGK Greg Schockling, PGK Gary
Arrington, Nathan Raun, Ralph Mendonca, Co-Chairs Tom Barry and Alphonso Fonseca. Also, thanks to Ron Martinez for the
newsletter and website support.
• Slate of Officers for Fraternal Year 2020-2021: We are looking for new candidates to be Officers next year! All Officer positions
are open for nominations. You must be a 3rd degree Knight in good standing. Though not required, the ideal candidate would
have been active with the council for at least a year. Nominations are read in May and voted in June. Installation is in July. If
you are interested in becoming an Officer or Director, please see Deputy Grand Knight Jim Kij.
• Priests vs. Seminarians Basketball Game: The annual Priests versus Seminarians Basketball game is on Friday, March 6th at
Delmar Fieldhouse. Gates open at 3 p.m. A tailgate will be held before the game starting at 5 p.m. Tip off starts at 7:00 p.m.
Go to Houstonvocations.com/tickets.
• New Ceremonial and Recruitment: The new exemplification has now been kicked off in the State of Texas. This exemplifica-
tion has had positive reviews. Families can now witness a candidate become a 3rd degree Knight in short order. At the recent
ceremony, family members, especially wives, were very excited and receptive of this new ceremonial. Please help us by recruit-
ing new men to join our council. See Membership Director Carlos X. Martinez for more details.
Finally, please wish Father Jaison (Feb 28), Father Drew (Mar 12) and Deacon Dennis (Mar 9) Happy Birthday this month! May God
continue to bless them for their wonderful guidance and support to St. Laurence Parish and our Council!
Thank you Brothers for everything you do to make our Council thrive!

Brothers,
If you haven’t paid your dues yet, now is the time. Second Notices went out this weekend,
and although we’ve done well so far, there are still 100 men who owe for one and two
years.
It’s that time of year again: Lent and that means FISH FRYS. Come out and pitch in to help
us make the event even better this year.
We start setting up around 2:30 and serve from 5-8pm. We need at least 35 guys to make this event run
smoothly. Even if you have just an hour before dinner — or after work — come on out for some GREAT fellowship
and get involved. Its a GREAT way to meet your fellow brothers and start getting involved.
REMEMBER WEAR A HAT IN CASE YOU HAVE TO SERVE !!
This is a community event for the parish and we are proud to put it on each year. Please help us continue making
it the successful event that it has been.
Make sure you come out to the third fish fry (13 March). We are doing a pet adoption awareness program with
Fort Bend Animal Services, so we will need a little extra help. More information to come in the bulletin.

Brother Knights, it’s been a very busy couple of months since Christmas. We are still very
much on track to reach STAR council.
For those who don’t know, STAR Council is an award from Supreme for councils that meet
certain criteria for the year. The criteria are based on membership, insurance, and programs
done within Faith, Family, Community, and Life areas. As you can tell, STAR Council is a
way to recognize councils for living what it means to be a Knight. We have done a great job in
all of these categories thus far. For the membership, we are about 10 new members from reaching our goal!
Thank you to everyone who has put forth new members. For the insurance, the criteria changed this year. Instead
of needing a specific number of new insurance members, we need to hold insurance nights that are open to the
Parish. Be on the lookout as we will be having Insurance Nights in the coming months. Thank you to everyone
who has helped at the number of different events for which we have been a part. Every volunteer helps make those
events run smoothly.
Coming up, the months don’t get any slower! We have entered into the Lenten Season, which is the season for
repentance and renewing our faith in Christ. Also, with Lent, comes the Knights of Columbus Fish Fry. For those
new to the council, Fish Fry happens each Friday of Lent. We need all the help we can get because it takes many
Knights to make the Fish Fry happens for the community. Please come out as much as you can each week. There
will be plenty of work to be done throughout the night.
Also, starting March 1st, we have opened the Annual Knights of Columbus Essay Contest for both graduating
High School Seniors and 8th graders. Submissions for this will be due by March 31st, then the Essay Committee
will begin reading the submissions and selecting two winners from each level. Thank you to everyone who volun-
teered to be on the committee. It has made this process work wonderfully.
I hope everyone has a very prayerful, renewing Lent and I look forward to seeing everyone at the Fish Fry and
business meetings!

Tom Barry

Brother Knights,
Keeping the momentum, as we enter Lent. The Galveston-Houston Arch Diocese is
blessed to conduct the New Initiation Ceremonial at the Co-Cathedral and our Council will
be well represented. Please pray for our candidates and for those candidates that will be
unable to attend.
• 18 Brothers have joined. 28 is our goal for this Fraternal year.
Please continue to communicate with our Parishioners to take the first step in joining our Council, by providing
their contact information to follow up with them to provide more information to support their interest in joining.
The Ceremonials of our Order currently are transforming to become a new all-inclusive event. This is key as our
Ceremonials, effective March 1, will no longer be secretive. This is a tremendous opportunity for our Order to
adapt and position our Order for continued success and growth. This was our Founder Fr. Michael J. McGivney’s
prayer, for the Order to continue to grow to support the Catholic Church and its needs.
Please contact me if you know of potential candidate who are willing to join. Please have them complete the
Form 100 Admission Document. There are multiple ways to initiate the admission process:

Worthy Brothers,
In this article, our Family Director Travis Baughman gives a summary of how Brother Knights
and their families spent their weekend on Saturday Feb 29 at the Mamie George Community
Center Food Fair on Saturday along with SLCS Leos Club and others. The Food Fair was
great. There were lines of people waiting to pickup food. I brought my 13 year old son, Caleb to
help as well. To my surprise, he enjoyed helping at the Food Fair. There are times I can’t get him to do the sim-
plest chore but he eagerly helped for one hour. That one hour, though short in time, made a huge impression on
him and helped someone. I pray that you will offer a small act of Charity this Lent to make a difference for some-
one in need.

Worthy Brothers,
Great turn out at the Mamie George community center event on February 29. We were able to donate over 100
pounds. With the St. Laurence Leo’s club and our council members we had over 25 people Knights, family mem-
bers and Leo’s in attendance. We repackaged donations and delivered them to the needy at the food fair for Fort
Bend County residents. We plan to make this a repeatable event and will begin to collect monthly donations to
share with this Catholic charity. Please look for the next opportunity to join us.

Making a Difference through Faith-in-Action
JD Gutierrez
Hi Travis,
I just wanted to say thank you so much for you and the other Knights coming out to volunteer on Saturday! I
hope that you enjoyed working with the clients and the Order of Malta to see what goes on at Mamie George.
You helped serve 260 families in just 3.5 hours! Thanks for blessing the lives of those in need in Fort Bend,
your work had a real impact on people’s lives.
Thank you again,

Worthy Brothers,
Peace be with you. Participation was off to a great start in January. February num-
bers did not disappoint.
• 8 Brother Knights participating our Holy Hour Adoration
• 7 Brother Knights led a group of 15 during our 2nd Sunday Rosary for the Unborn
• Sign-up for the weekly Respect Life Monument Clean-up is getting steadily filled up
• Good volunteer turnout during the Movie Night with the PTO at St. Laurence and the
Annual Blue and Gold dinner
• Even better volunteer turnout with the Chicken and Sausage Weekend activities
As I write this note, we’re at 90% of the target volunteer count for the Family Food Fair Volunteer Activity at the
Mamie George Community Center. There are activities in between where I don’t have a solid count, but I have
faith that everyone is putting Faith in Action – praying for our Brother Knights and their family as they go
through different challenges, as well as praying for the unborn. Thank you so much for all that you do!
March presents with multiple opportunities to serve, and it’s a great way to incorporate some of our Lenten
commitments. Please continue to keep an eye out for Flocknote communications and calendar postings on the
different activities we have lined up this Month.
As always, please reach out to any of our council officers if you have other activities in mind will put our Faith in
Action.

Dear Brothers,
On January 29 we had a fantastic showing at the Clergy Appreciation Night with the St. Laurence
Catholic School Leo Club — this was a tremendous family event.
We had another family event on Saturday, February 29 at Mamie George Community Center, part of
the Catholic Charities. We were very happy to have a great turn-out of Brother Knights and their
family members! Special recognition (again) to the St. Laurence Leo Club, they turned out in force.
Together with other volunteer organizations, we packaged and delivered food to Ft Bend county
families in need.
Also I would like to encourage all Knights to invite the future generations to help at the fish fry.
Little hands even for a few minutes make for more enjoyable and lighter work.

Brothers,
We have many opportunities for service in our communities. Looking at the Parish
Life portion of the church website there are 13 or more community groups. I know
some of you that belong to those groups and participate in them regularly. If you
do not belong to other Parish Groups and Ministries, I challenge you to seek out
those other church groups and spread out fraternal message to them. This will
help us to truly become even a more integral part of the parish community.
Reminder: speaking of community participation, check your Virtus/CMG training status to make
sure you can participate in these events. If you need initial or refresher training, please contact me

The Spring 40 Days for Life started on Ash Wednesday, February 6th and goes on until the 5th of
April. 40 Days for Life is a time for prayer and fasting, community outreach, and prayer vigils outside
abortion facilities. This international campaign has been held in 816 cities and participated by over a
million volunteers. Since 2007, 16,742 lives have been saved, 196 abortion workers quit and 106
abortion clinics closed – yes, the numbers have changed since the FlockNote message sent!
To support the 40 Days for Life, the Christian Voices for Life is sponsoring prayer across the street
from 8200 Wednesbury Lane in Sharpstown (SW Houston) on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:30 am
to 2:30 pm, and at Planned Parenthood on the Gulf Freeway on Friday March 20, from 6:30 am to
6:30 pm. Both facilities perform abortions and an hour of your time can help save a life!
