TRANSCRIPT

The Grand Theatre opened on August 11, 1923

as a premiere vaudeville half-house in the area,

presenting popular variety shows and hosting

local events. While built for live performance, the

theatre was converted to show “talkies” by the

late 1920’s and remained a beloved community

landmark for decades to follow. During its

heyday in 1941, the Grand was remodeled

and garnered with bold art deco features and

a sculptural marquee. It functioned as a movie

house with occasional live performances until

1977.

As of today, three generations of our

community have enjoyed and experienced art

and entertainment at the facility. The modern

incarnation as the Grand Theatre Center for the

Arts opened in September of 2007 and includes

the newly constructed Studio Theatre, remodel

of the Shamrock and American Hotels to house

classrooms and galleries, and the historic

renovation of the Grand Theatre – as the Eleni

Tsakopoulous-Kounalakis Theatre – offering live

performances and events of all kinds.

The Grand is an amazing facility due to its

thoughtful development as a professional

arts organization and educative center

within City government, as well as an

important public resource as an economic

redevelopment project in downtown Tracy.

Hundreds of community leaders, arts patrons,

educators and parents contributed to the

planning process that ultimately designed the

amenities and programming.

The Center is owned and operated by the

City of Tracy and managed by the Cultural

Arts Division in the City Manager’s Office.

The Grand Theatre Center for the Arts

has hosted amazing talent some of which

includes; Willie Nelson, Drew Carey, Robert Cray Band, Kellie Pickler, Uncle Kracker, Kathy Griffin, the Swon Brothers, Frank D’Ambrosio and many others.

history of the grand

It is with excitement that I introduce the eighth season of performances at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts in beautiful downtown Tracy. This season’s programming reflects the diversity and interests of our community and growing regional audiences, with performances that will amaze, inspire,

transport you to a different era, or have you springing out of your seat with dance!

Recently there has been a lot of new business activity and growth in our downtown area, and I truly believe that the Grand Theatre served as the epicenter of this ripple effect. For a fun evening, visit one of our local downtown restaurants and stroll the Grand Galleries before watching a performance in the breathtaking Eleni Tsakopoulous-Kounalakis Theatre.

If you haven’t seen a performance at the Grand Theatre, I’d highly encourage you to do so. Come see why so many people call it the “Jewel of Downtown Tracy” and experience a Grand season to remember!

Interim City Manager, Maria A. Hurtado

a grand season to remember

Peabo Bryson is a legendary vocalist offering a timeless mix of pop and soul as only he can. This two-time Grammy Award-winner has survived and prospered despite the passage of time and changes in popular musical trends. His duets with Natalie Cole, “What You Won’t Do for Love” and Roberta Flack, “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love,” have earned Bryson the tag “King of Balladeers.” With “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again,” he scored another crossover hit and solidified his mainstream audience.

But it was two songs for Disney animated films that earned Peabo his two Grammys. The first was 1991’s “Beauty and the Beast” with international pop singer Celine Dion. Peabo struck gold again receiving another Grammy for “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin” which he performed with Regina Belle. Both won Oscars for “Best Song”.

With twenty albums to his credit, Peabo Bryson has enjoyed an unprecedented, across-the-board level of international success.

Joe Nichols’ new single “Sunny And 75” is getting as great a reception as anything he’s ever done, and the album comes from something he might have hoped he could do at other points in his career, but have been held back from. What strikes Joe this time is how much freedom he’s felt in this process, the depth he’s had in his relationships – personal and professional. As Joe said, “Freedom, family and fun ... there’s your sound bite.”

joni morris and the After Midnight Band: A Tribute to Legendary Ladies in Country Music

Pat Travers was one of the stars of the golden age of hard rock, the 1970s. Known for his hits “Boom Boom (Out Go The Lights)”, “Snortin’ Whiskey” and “Crash and Burn”, Pat still brings the house down night after night.

It’s early 1979, and the Pat Travers Band have just been introduced and subsequently recorded for what would become one of the slickest and hottest, live guitar-rock albums ever committed to vinyl. ‘Live! Go for What You Know’ was a huge success on both sides of the pond, acclaimed by their musical peers, fans, and music critics alike. It was high-energy. It was electric.
