Grandma’s Bread Bag

José Marmelo e Silva Municipal Library - Espinho

The action "Grandma's bread bag" consisted in the use of

cloth bags when buying bread daily, avoiding the use of paper

bags offered by bakeries, changing habits.

There was a discount on the price of bread, or a bread offer to

all people who brought a cloth bag.

The objective was to reduce the amount of waste generated at

the source (paper mill and typography) and sensitize the

general public to environmental preservation.

The idea was to avoid unnecessary spending on the part of

participating bakeries and at the same time create the habit of

using the cloth bag.

This goal was achieved, reducing the amount of waste

generated for a total of 594 paper bags, during that week. It

also moved the general public to environmental preservation.

The environment won and at the same time, tradition was

recovered.

For this project, there was no need of sponsorship or

aditional investment. The team who was behind the

realization of this project, used their own means to contact

and convince the adherent bakeries.

We had some difficulties in convince all the local bakeries,

but we had the participation of 4 of them: "AIPAL", “PÃO

PEPIM", "LA TRAVIATTA" and “PÃO QUENTE

ATHENA". Why only four? Because some of them

thought they could have losses in their business.

However, customers joined with great satisfaction.

It should be noted the commitment of the bakeries and the

customers interest in continuing the campaign beyond the

European Week of Waste Reduction.

They all were very pleased with the actions and promised to

enlarge them in their daily life.

A poster was produced for dissemination of this action, as

well as posters of European Week for Waste Reduction,

with the slogan "Together, reduce is Act!".

The target audience was the general population. About 100 citizens have participated in this initiative. Everyday people buy bread; so it should be avoided everyday use of paper bags in bakeries. It has been offered a discount on the price of bread, or some bread for who carry its own cloth bag.

Resuming this project, we can say that

This action constitutes an excellent vehicle for the

dissemination of the principles of prevention, in the sense

that appeals to reuse cloth bags instead of using new paper

or plastic bags.

The action is original because it will change the pattern of

use of paper/plastic bags by cloth bags, recovering this way

a tradition.

There are bakeries throughout the world and the tradition

of the cloth bag is not only Portuguese, so it can be

adapted in every country.

Every day people buy bread, so they will avoid daily buying

paper or plastic bags in bakeries.

Will be offered a discount on the price of bread or some

quantity of bread.

in Rome, encouraging bakers to continue

its mission, as well as the participation of

more citizens in this project.
