Statement I: Project Description:
Students of today are truly immersed in the digital world. From iPhones to iPads and podcasts
to gaming, technology is very much a part of their world. Unfortunately, the public school
system cannot afford to keep up with the current trends in technology. If we hope to engage
the 21st
century student and train him or her to enter a world where technology rules, we must
address the need for technology in the classroom. This project addresses that need by
providing iPads, digital camera/camcorders, and software that will enable our students to
create projects in the classroom that meet the demands of the 21st
century digital world. We
will begin with establishing a School News Club which will be responsible for creating a digital
news broadcast each day. Students will use digital camera/camcorders and iPads with iMovie to
create the news which will be broadcast throughout the school each morning. We have also
been working with our faculty to begin using technology in the classroom for products that will
be shared with the school. For example, the students will be able to create original book
trailers, digital history documentaries/research projects, and digital tutorials for lessons taught
by students.
Statement II: Benefits to Students:
We plan to use this new technology to engage our students while providing them with
important digital skills that will allow them to be competitive in the college markets and their
future employment markets. Our school system has recently installed the foundation for
wireless connectivity in our school, and we have future plans for a Bring Your Own Device
(BYOD) program. Research has proven that students learn by doing, and this program will offer
students the chance to produce digital products to an authentic audience using up-to-date
digital tools. This plan will begin small with the School News Club student group producing

the daily news, but the plan will grow to have the potential of impacting all 680 students in the
school with technology toolbox sets that will be housed in our school media center available for
all teachers to check out and use in their classrooms with their students. The Common Core
Georgia Performance Standards require authentic work that is relevant to the world in which
our students live. By allowing our students to produce historical documentaries, news shows,
and digital lessons to share with their school and community, we are preparing them for college
and future careers where projects of this type will be the norm. We plan to evaluate the
effectiveness of our project through the use of student, teacher, and parent surveys to be sure
that the project has a positive impact on our students and community. We also hope to grow
the program through the use of our own local funds as they become available.
Statement III: Use of Funds:
As stated earlier, our school system has equipped our school with wireless throughout which
means that we have the infrastructure for this digital program. We also have computer labs
which are currently being updated with 25 working systems and a SmartBoard interactive white
board with document cameras. This grant would enable us to purchase the wireless iPads and
cameras needed to go forward with our project. If awarded, we would begin purchasing
equipment as follows:
$2,000 award
iPads (4 units @$399 each) $1596.00
Digital Camcorder (2 units @$160 each) $ 320.00
iPhoto and iMovie apps (x4 units) $ 39.92

The additional money up to $25,000 would be used to remodel a room in our media center as asoundproof media room where our students could create professional level digital products.
This would also be a place the school news crew could use as their studio for interviewing and
producing the daily news. This room is currently a storage area that is easily accessible from the
schools main server and computer storage area. The room is also accessible from the computer
lab which is located near the media center. We feel that we could offer this room to all teachers
and students for production purposes.
