Winter appears to have finally arrived as we welcome Wairarapa United and Waterside Karori to Memorial Park for today’s Central League and Capital Premier League action. Results for both Grant Plumbing teams have really been a mixed bag so far. However, as Island Bay showed last week against Miramar, we are all capable of competing and beating the very best teams. There is still plenty to play for and plenty of points to pick up for both teams.

I’d like to welcome Tall Poppy Property Group to our family of premier sponsors at Petone FC. Tall Poppy were unveiled as the sponsor of women’s football last Friday night, at the launch of our new women’s strategic plan, and it’s fantastic to have another quality company involved with our club. As always, please remember to support our sponsors wherever possible.

On behalf of the entire club I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Life Member Graham Hickling on the passing of his father earlier in the week. Graham has a very long, on-going association with our club, and his father was also involved with the junior committee and the running of the tuck-shop many years ago.

The coverage of the FIFA World Cup has been fantastic to date and most of the games have been very entertaining. The 1/4 finals are about to start this weekend and I’m sticking with my original pick, Germany. However, there is probably any one of eight teams who could take out the final (wink wink).

Good luck to all Petone teams this weekend and remember, play hard but play fair.

Craig DeadmanChairman, Petone Football Club

Maureen joined Petone in 1993 and in the six years that followed, she captained the Petone Women’s first team to five Central League Championships and a Wellington Division One championship in 1999. In addition to this the Petone team under her leadership reached the SWANZ Cup final (Women’s version of the Chatham Cup) on four occasions. During her playing career Maureen represented New Zealand more than 60 times, captaining the team in many of those games.

Where do you currently live and what are you doing?I’m still living in Wellington and am the Tax Manager of Z Energy, which keeps me pretty busy, especially at the end of a financial year! I might get along to watch the odd game of women’s football, and watch the Phoenix when I can. Right now, I am watching a lot of football on TV. Really enjoying the World Cup and looking forward to seeing how the teams progress or not as the case may be. I am still pretty active and enjoy keeping fit. Most weekends I’ll be out mountain biking and am still running, but not doing as much as I’d like (the body starts to complain).

How long did you play/were you involved with the Club? I starting playing when I was 10 years old, and stopped playing competitively 30 years later. I started playing for North Wellington for a junior team. Back then, I was the only girl playing, so sort of stuck out, whereas nowadays, it’s just normal to have boys and girls playing together at that early age, which is great! I then started playing in the women’s league when I was 13, first for North Wellington and then Miramar. I then headed overseas where I played for Millwall Lionesses for 4 years. It was when I returned to NZ that I joined Petone, and stayed there until I retired, which was around 6 years later I think.

Favourite memories of Petone Football Club? Which coach had the biggest influence and what players stood out during your time here? Most of the time I was at Petone our coach was Nora Watkins. We had a lot of good players over the years too, many of them representing Wellington and also the NZ Womens National team. I really enjoyed

playing in the central league, which was introduced around a year or two after I joined Petone. We were playing teams from Manawatu and Napier, so that was exciting and of course meant a better standard which helped our game too. Favourite memory of the Club was its family atmosphere, with a lot of really passionate and committed people running the club. Everyone was really friendly and welcoming and I really enjoyed playing on the No. 1 ground.

What was the key factor in Women’s football being so strong during your time here?I think the key was not one thing but a number of things. What was really important was that we were a team and enjoyed being part of the team. Having that sort of environment made going to training, playing games, and socialising fun. We also had a lot of really competitive and skilful players in our team and were all pretty focussed on playing good football and winning. Knowing that we had the support of the club was really good as well.

What was your career highlight?Top 3 for me were, and not necessarily in this order:Being inducted into the Wellington Hall of Fame – to be recognised was really humbling and to be in the same ‘club’ as Wynton Rufer is really cool.Qualifying for and playing in the 1st women’s world cup in China in 1991.Winning the Women’s Football Cup (equivalent of the English FA Cup) for Millwall in 1991.

Who was your footballing idol when you were growing up?Anyone that was playing in a number 7 shirt! Well not quite everyone, but really enjoyed watching Kenny Dalglish and Peter Beardsley. As you may have guessed by now, I am a huge Liverpool supporter. However, I did secretly like Bryan Robson. These guys were all “complete” players and played central midfield, so tried to model myself against these guys. Maureen 1994 Womens Central League

It was Barry Pickering who picked the name “Dreamers”. He thought it a good moniker for a bunch of ex Petone players returning after a long layoff , trying to recapture their youth and the glory days.

And here we are now... 12 years later. There are still 7 originals playing Troy, Jim, Bakes(122), Stapes(13), Revie(147), George and Steve Ryan.

The Dreamers like to think of themselves as a kind of feeder team for the Firsts. Josh Ebert, Rich McLay and Anu Singe all made appearances for the Dreamers and then went on to star for the Firsts. It’s also a team that must surely be in the record books for the highest amount of father/son combos to play in one team. We’ve had the Revells, Bakers, Stapletons and Eberts.

We are in our first year in Masters football. Things are currently going quite well, sitting in mid-table is a nice spot to be after 3 consecutive relegations! The team has picked up some new blood (and quality drinkers) with the arrivals of Hamish, Ian, Pete, Matt and Chris. We have also recently picked up a sponsorship deal with Boulcott Hospital. This after Revie, Bakes and Graham all had knees operated on by the same surgeon there.

A couple of other funny stories to come from the Dreamers franchise...Stapes was refereeing one day over at Sladden. He was getting it in the ear from both teams. So with around 10 minutes to go Stapes had enough, he threw the whistle up in the air and stormed off. He went home to do the lawns.

The boys normally get changed 30 minutes before kickoff. Playing out in Melrose one day we’re about to go in to get changed when Troy starts effing and blinding. He’d left his gear at home. He rang his wife to bring the gear into town. It was never going to get there before kick-off so everybody decided to play without any gear on...

Last Friday, 27th June, we were very proud to launch our Petone FC Women’s Development Strategy - a five year plan to see Petone competing in the Central League and returning top level women’s club football to Memorial Park.

In addition to the launch of the strategy, we were also excited to announce Tall Poppy Real Estate Group as our new women’s football sponsor.

Aaron and Michelle Pont, the Lower Hutt Licensee, were present to view the strategic plan and meet various club members. They were impressed with the challenge we have set ourselves for growth in the women’s game and are excited to be part of our wonderful club.

It’s a very exciting time for women’s football at Petone FC and we are delighted to have Tall Poppy on board!

From the World Cup...Look for goodness sakes this World Cup is just now too sexy for words. It’s got everything. Yes there has been full on attack and goals flying in all over the show but what about some of the goal keeping? Tim Howard was on another planet v Belgium. Yes okay they lost but far out he was incredible. I don’t remember him being that reliable at Manchester United but I digress.. Quickly back to the goals cos I bloody love goals flying in!

James/Hummus Rodreguiz’s first goal v Uruguay? Get that into ya! Sorry but that’s up there with a bowl of hot fries and a large/deep dipping dish of tomato sauce (it’s got to be nice and deep so I can kinda scoop my chip in there confidently and get good sauce coverage ok?). When that goal went flying I just wanted to run round like an idiot. It’s just what football does to me. My god it’s good, it’s great. I rang my Mum later that day and said “did you see that first goal by Hummus Rodreguiz?” I had goose bumps as I was talking about it. She hadn’t seen it because she was making waffles but hey that’s cool.

I have no idea who is going to go on and win the thing but you know what? I don’t care. This has been a great World Cup, certainly the best I’ve witnessed, and whoever wins that’s sweet with me...just not Argentina.
