2nd Grade Social Studies

In social studies the past 2 weeks we’ve

been pretty busy talking about the elec-

tion and how to become president.

We’ve talked about the different pets

the past presidents have had in the

White House. One president had silk

worms as a pet! We made a past presi-

dent wheel and learned fun facts about

previous presidents, like they’re favor-

ite foods. We also found out that the

White House has 35 bathrooms! It’s all

been very interesting.

FESTIVAL FOOD

RECEIPTS

Festival Foods has informed

us that the Festival Foods

Receipt program for schools

is no longer active. The pro-

gram ended in the middle of

October. The PTO thanks

any of you that were helping

out by saving these for us.

The program to replace the

receipts is a Scrip program…

More information will be

available in the coming

Election Day!

Granton Elementary students got into the

election spirit this week! Organized by

the 5th grade, the elementary held their

own election for President of the United

States. To give the students a sense of

ownership, the elementary also voted to

decide what charity event they would

have this spring. The students voted be-

tween the American Heart Association’s

Jump Rope for Heart and the American

Cancer Society’s Mini-Relay for Life. 5th

grade students made powerpoint com-

mercials for both events and each class-

room watched these throughout the week.

The students also made posters and had

commercials during the morning an-

nouncements. Each class was assigned a

certain number of electoral votes accord-

ing to the grades’ population. Although

the popular vote for president was within

8 votes, Barack Obama won the electoral

vote quite easily. The Mini-Relay for

Life was the winner of the charity event

and students are looking forward to sup-

porting this cause in May.

Fifth Graders work on their election commercial.

Voting on Election Day!

new faces as we start off 2013!!

new faces!! We need YOU!!!

PTO meets every first Monday

the remainder of the year at 6pm

in the IMC.

Mr. Bones the Skeleton visits 4-K

Last week Mrs. Hanson’s 4-K class learned

about bones and skeletons. Some of the

facts they learned are: Our skeletons give us

shape and support, bones can break and heal,

bones can grow, and bones protect our or-

gans. Mrs. Aumann’s Fifth graders had also

been learning about the skeletal system.

Some of the fifth grade students brought

“Mr. Bones”, a real skeleton to visit the 4-K

classroom. The 4-K students were able to

see what a real skeleton looked like, and al-

so touch and feel the bones if they wanted.

The fifth graders told the younger students

the names of certain bones, and then showed

them where in their body the bone was locat-

ed. They shared things that they learned and

also let the 4-K students ask questions. This

was a Great learning experience for the 4-k

class! Thank You Fifth Grade!

Family History

The Granton Fifth grade learned about

the importance of history in Social

Studies class recently. To wrap up the

unit, each student made a history pro-

ject. They chose between making a

family tree, interviewing a senior citi-

zen or making a timeline of their lives.

Each student then presented their pro-

ject to the class. The projects turned

out great and it was apparent that the

students and their families put a lot of

time and effort into these projects.

Great job 5th graders!

Fifth Graders show off their history projects.

After-School Learning Zone News

The after-school program is a busy place to be! In November we

started a new component called “Clubs.” This gives the students

a choice between three different activities to participate in each

night. The students are helping to pick the club ideas. Some of

the upcoming clubs are: stamping, chess or checkers, woodwork-

ing, drama, card making and legos. Students also still have

SPARK, homework time and a chance to get extra help in math

or reading. Enrichment classes have also started for students who

are looking for an extra challenge. You can sign up for the

Learning Zone by filling out the monthly calendar or calling Em-

ma Pucker at school.

Title I News

Changing Seasons, Changing Genres One of the age old sayings is that “time changes everything.” Well, sometimes time doesn’t change everything. We are all creatures of habit and sometimes need to push ourselves to try new things. As the weather gets colder and the nights get longer, take some time to make some changes to your reading habits. The fall and winter months offer great opportunities to build reading stamina. In or-der to build reading stamina, we need to have an enjoyable book. How about branch out and try reading another genre? Or set aside your favorite author and give another a chance. Who says we need to read only fantasy or realistic fiction? There are many great books out there waiting to be read. After all, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go (Dr. Seuss).” I challenge you and your family to choose a new reading genre and share the experience together. Take time to ask questions and share connections with the text. The more you interact with the text the greater the experience becomes.

Happy Reading! Mrs. Maguire

Granton-Past and Present!

The Third graders have been working really hard this

past month! In Social Studies we have been learning

about our community. We started by finding our state

and our community on a map. Then we found our county

on a Wisconsin map and labeled the name of our county

and where Granton is located in the county. We spent a

day using the mini-laptops to research information about

Granton such as its population, elevation, and other fun

facts. We used the book Granton Community Memories

1856-1976 to locate buildings in our community. A few

days later we walked around town to find the buildings in

the pictures and to see how they have changed over time.

The third graders then conducted interviews about what

things their parents liked to do for fun, in and around the

places they grew up in. We have learned so much about

our community that we are using the information we’ve

collected and are creating our own books about Granton. The third grade students on our walking field trip to see how the

places and buildings in our community have changed over time.

Want to Volunteer????? Granton School is always looking for volunteers to help

out. This could be weekly in an elementary classroom,

once a month or just for a special event. If you are inter-

ested in being put on a volunteer list, call Karen Tyler,

volunteer coordinator!

4th Grade News

The 4th graders have just finished up reading 2 novels:

The Whipping Boy, and The Enormous Crocodile. Both

groups completed projects covering characters, setting,

problem, and solution. They are displayed in the hallway

outside our classroom. Stop by and check it out!

We’re enjoying our new unit in science on light.

We just finished up our monthly newspaper on explorers

to Wisconsin. In English we’ve been working on writing

paragraphs. In math we learned about mode and median,

as well as reviewed place value, and addition and subtraction

of large numbers. Our next focus will be on multiplication

facts.

4th graders collect data to complete bar graphs and find

median, mode, maximum, and minimum.

First Grade Field Trip

The first grade class was so lucky to go on a field trip already

this fall! With Mrs. Larson, Anna Kayhart’s mom (Julie Kayhart),

Aydin Sternitzky’s mom (Heather Sternitzky), and Mrs. Gauvin,

we all got on a bus and had the first grade tour at St. Joseph’s

Hospital in Marshfield. We had a wonderful time learning about

different places in the hospital such as the rehabilitation center,

the pediatric unit, and the radiology department. All of us got to

participate in something neat! Some of us got to dress up and pre-

tend to be a doctor or a nurse! We even got to play pretend with

some of the tools that real doctors and nurses use! The rest of us

had the opportunity to take a ride on the X-Ray machine where we

got to see how they actually take pictures of the insides of our

whole body! Don’t worry…it doesn’t hurt as we found out! It was

more like an amusement park ride! We had fun and learned a lot

on our field trip to the hospital and some of us even want to be-

come doctors or nurses when we grow up. However, we really

don’t want to visit again anytime soon because that would mean

that we are sick! And we don’t want that! Doctors or First Graders??????
