Robotics League Participation Grants 2019-20 Annual Report

Introduction In accordance with Wis. Stat. section 115.45, the Department of Public Instruction submits this annual report for the robotics league larticipation grants program for the 2019-20 school year for referral to the appropriate standing committees of the legislature. Under the program, eligible teams of pupils in grades 6-12 from school districts, charter schools, private schools, and home-based private education programs may submit one application per eligible team. This report provides a list of teams that received award letters and overall funding detail. If you have any questions regarding this report, please contact Grant Huber, Legislative Liaison, at (608) 267-2003.

Description Eligible teams of pupils in grades 6-12 from school districts, charter schools established under Wis. Stat. sections 118.40 (2r) and (2x), private schools, and home-based private education programs may submit one application per eligible team to receive funding under the robotics league participation grants program. In spite of the novel coronavirus (“COVID-19”) pandemic, many school districts were still able to support robotics teams and attend robotics competitions. However, some competitions were cancelled and school districts could not spend all of their awarded funds in the end. Table 1 below contains information regarding the number of grants paid relative to the number of grants awarded in the 2019-20 school year.

* After being awarded, 41 teams declined to submit claims for grant money, as a result of COVID-19 or related issues. Table 2 below contains further information regarding the total funds paid out relative to the funds available under the grant in the 2019-20 school year.

In total, the Department of Public Instruction received approximately $574,000 worth of grant funding requests. As outlined in statutory language, the maximum possible award per team is $5,000. If the requests from applications approved exceeds the amount of funding ($500,000), the department will prorate the amount it awards to each applicant. Due to this, each approved application was awarded 87.2% of every dollar requested, resulting in $4359 being awarded of every $5,000 requested. The pages that follow list the total amount of state funds obligated per team receiving a grant under the robotics league participation grants program, as well as the school district or school from which the team originates and the grade levels of pupils participating in each team.
