Granville Catholic Church Record Vol. 4. No. 20 May 19, 2019 5th Sunday of Easter, Year C The Official Bulletin of Holy Trinity Parish at Granville and Holy Family Parish at East Granville The month of May, the month that is fairest in nature, is dedicated to Mary our Mother, who is fairest in grace. With the exception of Jesus Himself, no name has captured the hearts of the faithful more than that of the Mother of God. The Blessed Mother of God is invoked under many titles, such as Our Lady of Good Counsel, Our Lady of Lourdes, and Our Lady of the Rosary, but we venture to say that one of the most beautiful titles accorded to her by the Catholic faithful that has gained in lustre by the passing of time, is that of “Mary, Help of Christians.” It is the title by which we honour her as the Patroness of Australia, and the Patronal Feast Day is celebrated on May 24, Australia’s Feast Day. The origin of the title is indeed an inspiring one. Back in the Middle Ages when Christianity was oppressed and persecuted by the Turks, the Holy Father had recourse her under this beautiful title to stem the tide of the ruthless invaders. That appeal was not in vain. Before the news of the victory at Lepanto could be carried to Rome, the Holy Father was privileged with a vision—a vision of the Turkish fleet set to rout by the defenders of the Cross. In gratitude, the title, Mary, Help of Christians, was added to the Litany. And now the Church in Australia and New Zealand is privileged to invoke her as Patroness under that self-same title, and daily prayers to her who has so often proved herself the helper of Christians to help us in the conflict with paganism, and bring the erring ones back to the fold. Thank You to Romeo Chidiac

We express our sincere gratitude to Romeo Chidiac for his work in constructing the wooden plinths for the newly restored statues of St. Joseph and St. Theresa of Lisieux.

These plinths, constructed of timber and stained to match the colour of the wood in the narthex are a beautiful addition to the church and are worthy stands for these holy statues. Thank you to Romeo for his expert craftsmanship in designing and constructing these plinths and for his generosity in donating the

materials and the cost of his labour. We are grateful to him for his kindness and his support of the parish. And Romeo has also generously offered to help with repairs in the sacristy. Thank you to Romeo for his generous support and his care and dedication to the Church and to the parish. And we also thank, again, Raphae l l a Ch id i ac , f o r he r incredible generosity in donating the money to have these statues restored. Her kindness made this work possible and helped to preserve these statues, which have stood in the church for so many years and will for many more years to come. God bless all who so willingly support the work of the parish.

Throughout Lent and Holy Week there were people who worked very hard to make all of what happened at Holy Family Church and Holy Trinity Church possible. We would like to thank them for their work and for their dedicated service to the parish. This week we would like to thank John Portelli and Claudette Takchi for their incredible work arranging and preparing the altars of repose for Holy Thursday. Holy Trinity Church and Holy Family Church were blessed to have stunning altars to enthrone the Blessed Sacrament.

The Altar of Repose for Holy Trinity Church was arranged in Mackillop Hall, as is the custom now for a number of years. John spent days designing, preparing and arranging the altar and created a magnificent sanctuary in which the Blessed Sacrament, transferred after

THANK YOU

The Altar of Repose for Holy Family Church was prepared at the Altar of Our Lady. Claudette worked tirelessly in creating and preparing a stunning arrangement worthy of the Blessed Sacrament.

It was a glorious scene of beaut i fu l whi te flowers and adorned with candles which set a scene that drew us into the majesty and the solemnity of Holy Thursday. The green and the white of the fl o r a l a r r a n g e m e n t s w e r e illuminated with the gold of the candlesticks and the shimmering lights from the candles to create an ethereal scene. And we thank Maryanne Takchi for her incredible work in helping to prepare and arrange the flowers that covered the altar. As a number of people said, they felt like “they were in heaven” with the Lord.

The sanctuary was prepared so that as you approached i t you en te red th rough the wilderness, a scene created with various plants and shrubs, into the garden of paradise, arranged with beautiful floral displays in red, white, and yellow, and to the altar i tself flanked by angels and enthroning the newly restored ciborium holding the Blessed Sacrament. The sanctuary was emblazoned with light from over 100 candles whilst Gregorian chants were sung to provide a haunting place to pray with the Lord on the night before His passion and death. John was greatly assisted in this work by Rosette Chidiac and Spiro Portelli and we thank them for their generous help in making all this possible.

First Reading The Acts of the Apostles (14:21-27)

Paul and Barnabas went back through Lystra and Iconium to Antioch. They put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the faith. ‘We all have to experience many hardships’ they said ‘before we enter the kingdom of God.’ In each of these churches they appointed elders, and with prayer and fasting they commended them to the Lord in whom they had come to believe. They passed through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia. Then after proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia and from there sailed for Antioch, where they had originally been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now completed. On their arrival they assembled the church and gave an account of all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the pagans.

Responsorial Psalm (Ps 99:1-3, 5. ℟. v. 3)

℟. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.

The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all,

compassionate to all his creatures. ℟.

All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and your friends shall repeat their blessing. They shall speak of the glory of your reign and declare your might, O God, to make known to men your mighty deeds

and the glorious splendour of your reign. ℟.

Yours is an everlasting kingdom;

your rule lasts from age to age. ℟.

Second Reading The Book of the Apocalypse (21:1-5)

I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth; the first heaven and the first earth had disappeared now, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the holy city, and the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, as beautiful as a bride all dressed for her husband. Then I heard a loud voice call from the throne, ‘You see this city? Here God lives among men. He will make his home among them; they shall be his people, and he will be their God; his name is God-with-them. He will wipe away all tears from their eyes; there will be no more death, and no more mourning or sadness. The world of the past has gone.’ Then the One sitting on the throne spoke: ‘Now I am making the whole of creation new.’

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia! I give you a new commandment: love one another as I have loved you. Alleluia!

Gospel Gospel of John

(13:31-35)

When Judas had gone Jesus said: ‘Now has the Son of Man been glorified, and in him God has been glorified. If God has been glorified in him, God will in turn glorify him in himself, and will glorify him very soon. My little children, I shall not be with you much longer. I give you a new commandment: love one another; just as I have loved you, you also must love one another. By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples.’
