It is almost Christmas and it is time for us to stop and think. There is a much deeper meaning to this holiday Than parties, shopping, food and drink. It is time to remember the humble birth of the Christ child. He was born perfect and holy, Yet he was meek and mild. There are people all around us that are in great need. The elderly, the jobless, the homeless and the hungry we must feed. So whatever your plans, whatever you do, the kind of Christmas you have is a reflection of you. You can exemplify His life by extending a helping hand. You can reach down to the fallen and help someone to stand. You can take time to meditate or you can rush around and fret. The true meaning of Christmas is not how much you get. It is nice to receive gifts, but more blessed to give. Sharing what you have may help someone else to live. You may be able to help just one or two. The way you share at Christmas will be a reflection of you. Before you go out to do your shopping or start your celebration, remember the birth of the Christ Child and his crucifixion for your salvation. You can celebrate with merriment and help many or just a few. The way you celebrate Christmas will be a reflection of you.

A REFLECTION OF YOU

*The following poem was written by Mrs. Inez Neal, of Butner, in November of 1991. Inez is a former participant and volunteer at the South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor. We decided to run this again as it shares a wonderful message for the holidays. Enjoy!

It is almost Christmasand it is time for us to stop and think. There is a much deeper meaning to this holidayThan parties, shopping, food and drink.

It is time to rememberthe humble birth of the Christ child. He was born perfect and holy,Yet he was meek and mild.

There are people all around usthat are in great need. The elderly, the jobless, the homelessand the hungry we must feed.

So whatever your plans, whatever you do, the kind of Christmas you haveis a reflection of you.

You can exemplify His lifeby extending a helping hand. You can reach down to the fallenand help someone to stand.

You can take time to meditateor you can rush around and fret. The true meaning of Christmas is not how much you get.

It is nice to receive gifts, but more blessed to give.Sharing what you have may help someone else to live.

You may be able to helpjust one or two.The way you share at Christmaswill be a reflection of you.

Before you go out to do your shoppingor start your celebration, remember the birth of the Christ Childand his crucifixion for your salvation.

You can celebrate with merrimentand help many or just a few.The way you celebrate Christmas will be a reflection of you.

COFFEE WITH KATHYJoin us at the North Granville Senior Center

in Stovall for Coffee with Kathy. This program will be held on Wednesday, December 7 beginning at 11:30 a.m. Kathy May, Senior Services Director, visits one of our three senior centers each month to talk with interested persons about our services or answer any questions you may have. This program is held the first Wednesday of each month and rotates between our three senior centers. This is a great way to get the information you want or need about our programs or any aging issue. Mark your calendars and make plans to attend.

SENIOR SERVICES HONORS VETERANS

Amedisys Home Care and Hospice, along with the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford, held a Veteran’s breakfast on Thursday, November 10 at the Granville County Convention and Expo Center. Over 100 veterans and their guests from all over Granville County enjoyed speakers, fellowship and breakfast catered by Privette’s Catering. This was a very special event with veterans present from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan. All branches of the military were represented.

The Granville County Senior Center would like to thank Amedisys Home Care and Hospice for their sponsorship. Thanks to our vendor, Franklin Manor, for their sponsorship. Many thanks to our guest speaker, Dr. Douglas Vaughan, Granville County Veterans Service Officer, for the wonderful talk he gave during the event. Thanks to Lena Privette with Privette’s Catering for the delicious breakfast. Senior Services was honored to be able to be part of such a special program; many thanks to those who gave so much for our country.

SENIOR SERVICES HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

Granville County Senior Services will be closed for the Christmas holiday on Thursday, December 22nd, Friday, December 23rd and Monday, December 26th. We will reopen on Tuesday, December 27th at 8:30 a.m. We will also close for the New Year’s holiday on Monday, January 2nd, 2017. All centers will reopen on Tuesday, January 3rd at 8:30 a.m. There will be no congregate or home delivered meals served on these days. We wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season!

Mr. Bert Glover, 102 years old, was recognized at this year’s Veteran’s breakfast

as the oldest veteran present. Mr. Glover served in the Army in World War II.

CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS WITH US!The holiday season is in the air at all three of our senior centers. The season is definitely here and everyone’s

excitement is contagious! Come and check out our beautifully decorated centers and all of the holiday programs we’ve planned. We are all looking forward to a wonderful holiday season spent with friends at our centers.

First graders from Stovall-Shaw Elementary School will be at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford on Wednesday, December 14 to perform for our seniors. Their program will begin at 11:00 a.m. Each year Stovall-Shaw first graders visit our senior center to spread Christmas joy all around. We always look forward to their visit!

The Granville County center will hold our annual Christmas party on Friday, December 16 beginning at 10:00 a.m. We will have refreshments, carols and lots of fun! During our Christmas party the children from Cornerstone Christian Community Church preschool will make their annual visit to our center. They will entertain us with Christmas songs beginning at 10:30 a.m. This group’s annual visit always brings smiles to our faces and definitely puts us in the Christmas spirit. This is always a wonderful addition to our Christmas party! Like years past “admission” to the party will be three cans of food. The food will be collected for ACIM (Area Congregations in Ministry). Last year we collected over 250 pounds of food for this organization to help feed needy families during the holidays.

The Granville County center will have Christmas spirit days leading up to the center closing for the Christmas holiday. On Monday, December 19 wear your favorite Christmas sweater or Christmas shirt. Tuesday, December 20 is Christmas hat day! Wear your Santa hat, elf ears, reindeer antlers, or decorate your own hat with tinsel, ornaments or whatever Christmas decorations you have! Wednesday, December 21 is red and green day. Wear your Christmas colors as we wind down our holiday activities before we close for the holidays. Bring your Christmas spirit and join us!

The North Granville Senior Center in Stovall will hold several holiday events this season. On Tuesday, December 6 we’ll be going on a Reindeer Hunt! One of Santa’s reindeer – probably Dasher – has escaped from the North Pole! Come and help find him so that Santa will be able to have his full herd to pull his sleigh on Christmas Eve. If you are the first to find him, Santa might leave you a nice surprise! The hunt will begin at 11:00 a.m.

The North Granville center will hold their annual Christmas party on Tuesday, December 13 beginning at 9:00 a.m. There will be games, special music, drawings for special prizes and a catered lunch. You MUST preregister for lunch by December 6th by calling the center at (919)693-3383. There is a $5.00 per person charge for lunch due when you register. “Admission” to the party will be three cans of food or items to fill special bags for the homeless in Oxford. If you are interested in donating items to fill these bags please contact Phyllis Blackwell for a list of needed items. All of the food collected will be donated to ACIM (Area Congregations in Ministry) in Oxford. Let’s celebrate Christmas by having a wonderful time of fellowship with friends and by helping our neighbors in need!

On Wednesday, December 14 the North Granville center will play Secret Santa Bingo! This will begin at 10:30 a.m. Play Bingo with us and win a surprise gift!

The South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor will hold several Christmas themed programs this month. On Wednesday, December 14 we’ll play Christmas Bingo! Join us for Bingo at 10:15 a.m. with Christmas themed prizes.

The South Granville center will hold their annual Christmas party on Friday, December 16 beginning at 10:30 a.m. This will once again be sponsored by the South Granville Rotary Club. Lunch and entertainment will be provided. This is always a fun time for all! You must preregister by calling the center at (919)528-0848.

On Monday, December 19 we will play tricky Santa! If you would like to be a part of this fun gift exchange please bring a $5.00 gift suitable for a man or a woman. (Only those who bring gifts will be eligible to play.) We’ll begin at 10:00 a.m. Don’t get to attached to the gift you receive though – you might not be able to keep it! This is always fun – there will be lots of laughs! Bring your $5.00 gift and join us.

Join us for any (or all) of these fun holiday events. Granville County Senior Services wishes you and yours a wonderful holiday season!

DECEMBER DAY TRIPAARP DRIVER SAFETY

CLASS SCHEDULEDThe AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation’s

first and largest driver safety course designed especially for drivers 50 and older. The course is intended to help drivers live more independently as they age and remain safe on today’s roads.

The Driver Safety Program course covers defensive driving techniques and the normal changes in vision, hearing and reaction time associated with aging. The course also provides practical techniques for adjusting to these changes to ensure the driver’s own safety and that of others on the road. Participants learn about current rules of the road and how to operate their vehicles more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. Topics include: maintaining proper following distance; methods of changing lanes and turning at intersections; effects of medications on driving; minimizing the effect of dangerous blind spots; limiting driver distractions such as eating, smoking and cell phone use; properly using safety belts, air bags and anti-lock brakes, maintaining physical flexibility and monitoring the driving skills and capabilities of yourself and others.

The South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor will host the AARP Driver Safety Class on Monday, December 12 from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. You must preregister for this class by calling the South Granville center at (919)528-0848. The cost for this class is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members which includes all course materials.

Course participants may be eligible to receive a state mandated, multi-year discount on their auto insurance premium. Participants should contact their insurance company or agent for more details.

The instructor for this class will be Lynroy Thomas, a certified AARP Driver Safety Program instructor. Sign up begins now!

The South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor will be traveling to the Barn Dinner Theatre in Greensboro this month to see “How the Buckner Family Saved Christmas” on Tuesday, December 20th.

This show, a Barn Dinner Theatre favorite, is about a disillusioned department store Santa and his not-so-bright sidekick who try to ruin the Buckner family’s Christmas. Back by popular demand, this fast paced, slapstick comedy is sure to make your holiday season memorable!

This trip is full but we can add your name to the waiting list in case of cancellations. The cost of this trip will be $60.00 per person which includes admission to the show, the meal and transportation.

This is a 1:00 p.m. show so we will make a brief stop at Alamance Crossings on the way. We will depart from the South Granville center at 9:00 a.m. (we will pick up at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford at 8:30 a.m. Please call the South Granville center at (919)528-0848 to register.

WET BRUSHES WATERCOLOR CLASSESThe Wet Brushes watercolor class at the

Granville County Senior Center in Oxford is going to take a break during the winter months. Lin Frye, our instructor, will resume classes in the spring. We look forward to seeing all of our watercolor artists back in class after the break!

The Bob Ross art class, also at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford, will also be taking a break during the winter months. Elaine Harris, our longtime instructor, has decided to “retire” from teaching so that she can spend more time with her family. We have interest from another instructor so hopefully we will have someone in line to teach classes beginning in the spring. We want to wish Elaine well and many thanks to her for her 10 years of teaching art at the Granville County center!

When classes resume we will of course have information in this newsletter. Keep working at home – we’ll see all of our artists back in the spring!

FIRE DRILLS SCHEDULEDAll three of our senior centers will hold fire

drills this month, conducted in accordance with the National Senior Center Standards. All persons in the buildings at the time of the drill are to exit and meet in the designated spot for each center. The Granville County Senior Center will hold their drill on Thursday, December 15 at 10:00 a.m. The North Granville Senior Center in Stovall will hold their drill on Friday, December 9 beginning at 11:00 a.m. The South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor will hold their drill on Monday, December 12 at 10:30 a.m.

CHRISTMAS CRAFTERNOON WORKSHOPSCrafternoon Workshops are a blend of instructor “how to” demonstrations and participant “hands on” endeavors

under the guidance of the instructor. In these three workshops the relatively inexpensive and versatile media called “paper” is used to give a special touch to your Christmas gifts and décor to bring out your artistic flair to Christmas in this age of technology. You learn to use your hands to do something other than swiping an app on a smart phone! Crafternoon days are December 6th, 7th and 8th from 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. and on each day a make it-take it project will be featured. After a short “how to” demonstration, participants will work at their own speed to complete the project(s) of the day. The projects will allow you to “give something of yourself” to your holiday celebration. Check out the schedule below for class descriptions.

Tuesday, December 6 - It’s In the Bag*Learn to make specialty gift bags like a Snowman or Santa as well as miniature gift bags for small treats or

gifts. Make, decorate and take home your accomplishments for the day.

Wednesday, December 7 - Boxes, Bows and Trims*A demonstration and presentation about the simplicity of decorating packages with paper will be followed by

learning to make a gift box by folding and cutting paper. Cornucopia boxes for sachets or candy treats and working with vellum will be a special feature.

Thursday, December 8 - Angel Light Centerpiece*Learn the method for cutting and sculpting paper angels to make a three-angel centerpiece with lights. You

will be able to save this centerpiece for many years.

Each class is $10 per person OR you may take all three classes for $25. The cost includes all supplies. We need a minimum of four participants in order to hold each class. Participants are asked to bring their own “tools” (scissors, rulers, etc). Maxine Chauvaux will be the instructor. You may register by email at [email protected] or by calling the Granville County center at (919)693-1930. Don’t miss out!

There has been a group playing at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford since we moved into our new building but now thanks to a grant from the Granville County United Way; the Oxford Recreation Department, in partnership with Granville County Senior Services, has painted two brand new pickleball courts at Hix gym in Oxford. Players will be able to use these courts Monday thru Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. We will continue playing here at the Granville County center on Mondays and Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. The City of Creedmoor Recreation Department also offers pickleball Wednesday and Friday afternoons at 12:30 p.m. in the gym next door to the South Granville Senior Center. If you play pickleball or would like to learn please check out one of these locations. You’ll quickly become a fan!

The Granville County Senior Center in Oxford also has a group of ladies who meet each Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. to play basketball! This group meets at Hix gym and plays for one hour. If you like to play and want a fun way to exercise, then join us!

HOLIDAY BAZAAR ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT!The seventh annual Holiday Bazaar at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford was another big success!

Craftsmen from around the area came to sell their handmade items. With 28 vendors, shoppers were able to find something for everyone – from pottery, jewelry, wood crafts, crocheted items, quilts, handmade wreaths, and much, much more. Nearly everyone who came out that day walked away with something. This was once again a very successful fundraiser for our center, raising nearly $1,400.00!

There are so many people to thank for helping with this event. This was a large undertaking and we could not have done this without the help of a great team of volunteers.

First, thank you to Phyllis Russell, Lin Frye and Nancy Cardin who worked our bake sale during the bazaar. Many thanks to those who donated items for our bake sale: Barbara Guthrie, Gail Huffaker, Lucy Moore, Montie Wilson, Jane Hamilton, Sandra Tunstall, Linda Norris, Betty Wainwright, Jane Reeder, Ernestine Breedlove, Nancylee Currin, Judith Hinton, Nancy Cardin, Phyllis Russell, Lin Frye, Doug Wilbourne, Carolyn Morton, Hassie Boddy, Terri Lynch and Sue Grissom.

Also thanks to Patricia Stalder for her donation of two beautiful crocheted afghans and a lap blanket for our raffle.

Thanks especially to our staff, Kathy May, Angela Wright, Jill Floyd, Diane Williams, Carolyn Keith, Leland Stewart, Sue Bryant and Robert Chavis for all of their hard work. Jill, Leland, Angela, Diane and Robert helped with set-up the day before. Leland, Jill, Sue and Carolyn manned concessions during the bazaar. Angela, Kathy and Diane worked the raffle sales. It was truly a team effort and our staff worked hard to help make this a success.

Many thanks to Julie Brockman and Diane Williams who were truly the force behind it all. The bazaar was Julie’s idea seven years ago and each year, under her guidance, it has gotten better and better. Julie and Diane began the initial planning and coordinating of this year’s event and worked hard to make sure everything went smoothly. Diane made our signs and banners and worked with vendors to coordinate spots. All of their hard work definitely paid off, as we had many happy vendors, volunteers and shoppers!

Thanks to each of our vendors who participated and to everyone who shopped with us. We look forward to another great event in 2017!

FOOD SAFETY TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOUR LOVED ONES The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 6 Americans gets sick from food poisoning

each year. Older adults are at an increased risk of more serious infections from food poisoning due to medications, age-related weakening of the immune system, and other underlying conditions.

Practice these food safety tips to keep your family safe from the dangers of foodborne illness during the holidays. 1. Do not wash your turkey and meats before cooking. Rinsing your poultry can actually spray bacteria up to three feet! Think about what you keep within three feet

of your sink – knife block, fruit basket, spices, and maybe drying rack? And for all that mess, rinsing your turkey doesn’t actually eliminate very much bacteria.

2. Thaw your turkey and meats in the refrigerator.Setting your turkey out on the counter to thaw is not safe. After just two hours, your turkey enters the danger

zone of unsafe temperatures, and bacteria will begin to multiply, even if the center is still frozen. 3. Use a food thermometer to ensure the internal temperature of the turkey is 165 degrees F.Any temperature below 165 degrees F means that E-coli bacteria could still be lurking, which can cause serious

illness or even death when consumed. Ovens cook unevenly, so make sure to take temperature measurements from both sides of the bird. For even cooking, it’s recommended that you rotate and flip your turkey often. If you have stuffed your bird, don’t forget to check the stuffing separately to make sure it reaches 165 degrees also.

4. Refrigerate leftovers. The food you don’t eat should be in the refrigerator within two hours of cooking and use leftovers within four

days.
