PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

I would like to thank staff, students, parents

and community agencies for their support in

our many endeavours this year. This term we

recognised our student sporting success for

2016 at the annual sports assembly, and our

student academic success and community

service at our annual presentation assembly.

We were supported with many parents and

guests who gave us very positive feedback

on both of these events. Our guests included

Mr Jason Clare, member for Blaxland, the

Honourable Mr Luke Foley, Leader of the

Opposition, Ms Anna Tsoutsa, Principal

Auburn Girls High School, Mr Dusan Dakic,

NSW Police Force, Mr Mark Busby, Creating

Chances, Mrs Randa Kattan, CEO Arab

Council Australia, Mr Colin Goodwin,

husband of the late Heather Goodwin

(support unit SLSO), Ms Inara Molinari,

Cumberland Council, Ms Layla Morcos,

LOWES, Mr Syd Thode, Merrylands RSL, Mr

David Flower, former student, Simaima

Taufa, former student and Jillaroos player

and Hanna Sio, Australian Sevens and

Wallaroos player.

We recognised many students at these

events. 2 of them were Amani Darwich of

year 12 and Karim Jebara of year 11.

Congratulations to Amani Darwich, the DUX

of year 12 2016. Amani worked consistently

for self-improvement and personal best. She

was involved in the creative and performing

arts and also contributed to student

leadership whilst balancing her studies.

Congratulations to Karim Jebara, the

recipient of the 2016 Principals award. Karim

is one of the top academic students in his

year group, has shown steady progress, is

consistent in his efforts across all courses,

has contributed to our sports coaching

program with local primary schools, has

represented the school at several events

through student leadership and sports, and is

respected by both staff and students. He has

an attendance rate of over 95%, and is

ranked 1st in 2of his preliminary courses, and

then 2nd, 3rd and 4th in his other courses.

For all members of our school, the most

significant events this year were those

included as part of our 50th anniversary

celebrations. Our 50th year has been

amazing!

The Flash Mob at Parramatta in term 1 was a Multicultural NSW funded and Arab Council Australia managed project led by Ms Tsaloukas. This project reflected our schools love of the performing arts and more specifically, the connections our students of many cultures, beliefs, and ages share. It was featured in the Daily Telegraph and there were thousands of online viewings of the video within days of the performance. Our year 11 music class with Ms Collins

wrote and recorded 2 unique School Songs

about our wonderful community, with the

support of Granville Youth and Community

Centre and funding from Parramatta Council.

Over 5 Friday morning sessions they

workshopped, composed, and refined their

ideas in order to produce the two songs. The

first live performance was at our first 50th

Anniversary assembly back in Week 5, Term

2. Our video clips to accompany both the

Official School Song and the Hip Hop Remix

have been presented on different occasions.

Both videos can be viewed via YouTube and

our school’s Facebook Page. These have

also had thousands of views.

The CAPA faculty also led the design and construction of a 50th anniversary mural which brought staff from across the school and students together. This mural brings life

to the formerly dull entry at the front of the

school.

Granville Multicultural Community Centre led

a video project with some of our students.

In addition, as part of education week celebrations we hosted a 50th Anniversary dinner supported by past students and teachers as well as special guests and current staff. Former students included the original year 7 class of 1966 and the first school captain as one of the guest speakers. The following weekend we held an open day for former staff and students. I would like to thank all the current staff, students and parents who supported this Saturday event. We all learnt about the 50 year history of our school, with 5 decade assemblies featuring former graduates as guest speakers, entertainment from our ensemble students and images and stories from each era. Former students spoke about the support they received from their teachers, not only in academic development but in social and emotional development and in decision making for life. We learnt that Granville South has a strong history in sporting success, in the performing arts with years of musical performances, with community partnerships, parent workshops and successful transitions into the world of work and further education. The school has had visits from famous guests including Dick Smith of Dick Smith Electronics, Tim Bailey and Vic Laruso, media personalities, Monique Coleman, a United Nations Youth Ambassador, and the British and Irish Lions Rugby Union players. The school garden became a community garden in 2002, opened by the Honourable Laurie Ferguson and community member John Koch, who, although retired, still looks after the garden today. The school hall opened in 1986, the support unit in 1993, the first library computer lab in 1997, the original gym and fitness room in 2002 and we have been a CAPA High School since 2012. This year, in addition to 50th Anniversary celebrations and the organisations already mentioned, we have worked on student and parent projects with Woodville Alliance, Auburn Youth Centre, Creating Chances, Western Sydney University, UNSW, Sydney

University, JP Morgan and ABCN, Granville Multicultural Community Centre and the Community Migrant Resource Centre. This year we have added a youth worker to our staff with Yusuf Mehcur, supported with assistance from chaplaincy funding and STARTTS. Our support unit staff and students, along with donations of plants and staff labour from Bunnings, have updated the front entry garden and the outdoor garden area near the community garden. Our Creative and Performing Arts Ensembles presented their annual performance at the Riverside Theatre and at school to a full hall of students from local primary schools. Their annual end of year concert was also very successful, with the audience including local primary students and our students and staff. We were featured in the ‘Our Spectacular’ performance at the Sydney Opera House. Our drama ensemble performed in 2 festivals, and students had the opportunity to perform at many school functions and local community events. Our teaching, administration and support staff

have continued their generous support of

public education in 2016, managing many

educational programs above and beyond

their regular classroom responsibilities. This

includes Ms Tsaloukas, and Mr Woollams,

who assisted behind the scenes for the

Schools Spectacular, which aired on

television the following week.

This year, 2 of our teaching staff were

recognised at the annual Australian College

of Educators’ World Teachers’ Day dinner.

Congratulations to CAPA teacher Ms

Cameron and Maths teacher Ms Fares. We

thank them for their service to our community.

Many of our parents supported projects and events this year including the Flash Mob at Parramatta, a range of community forums managed by the Department of Education and community organisations, recognition assemblies and morning teas, and of course our Open Day in Education week. Parents

donated food and worked on the stall to raise

funds for the P and C. I would like to

particularly recognise our P and C President

Ms Caroline Bunoza for her support. We

hosted a thankyou morning tea in the final

week of term.

I would also like to thank staff who have been

with us for this year or longer who are moving

on to other jobs next year; Mr Roberts, Mr

Awad, Ms Green, Mr Zammit, Ms Zhang, Ms

Sujeevan, Ms Jouni, and Ms Fares. Ms Fares

is absent for part of next year to assist as a

Head Teacher Mathematics in another public

school.

I would also like to particularly recognise the

contribution of 2 long serving Granville South

staff. Ms Pam, ESL teacher, has accepted a

transfer. We wish her well and thank her for

her service to hundreds of students, many of

whom have been new arrivals to Australia

and have benefiting from educational and

emotional support from Ms Pam. Ms

Murdoch, our Kitchen Assistant, is retiring at

the end of this year. She has supported both

staff and students with her meticulous

management of the kitchens.

Finally, I would like to thank all our

community members who worked on 2016

projects and events. It has been a huge year,

with many additional activities and

responsibilities.

I wish you all a safe and happy holiday and

look forward to another successful year in

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S

REPORT

Mr T Price

I am writing this as I wait to go to our annual

awards ceremony so firstly I would like to

congratulate all those students who have excelled

in their studies and are receiving an award. It is

great to see a growing number of students who

are engaged and committed to their own

learning. These are the students who are seeing

the benefits of their hard work. Congratulations

also to hose students who value the education

they are receiving and make the effort to attend

regularly and on time. This certainly pays

dividends in respect of improved learning

outcomes. Secondly I would like to thank all the

parents, family and community members who

support their children in their learning. This

makes my job easier and the work of the

classroom teachers so much more satisfying.

2016 has been a very successful year from my

viewpoint, particularly the myriad of events that

revolved around our 50th anniversary

celebrations. I take my hat off to all the staff

members who worked tirelessly to make this a

success. Also to the many students who rose to

the occasion and supported in so many ways to

help make all the events a success. I am proud to

work in a school where so many people all

contribute towards the common good and

promote our school in a positive light.

I would like to wish all students and their families

a restful and safe break and if you celebrate,

Happy Christmas!

SCIENCE FACULTY

L’Oreal Girls in Science Forum 2016

On Thursday 27th October, Mr Azzopardi, Dr Lisa

Wallis (Practical student) and five students;

Elizabeth Brown (Year 9), Elizabeth Bunoza (Year

11), Suzi Fadil-Wahib (Year 10), Sarah Kocergin

(Year 10) and Monika Vesse (Year 10), attended

the 2016 L’Oreal Girls in Science Forum held at

the University of New South Wales, Kensington

campus.

This excursion provided our students with an

opportunity to listen to three engaging

presentations from this year’s Australian L'Oréal-

UNESCO For Women in Science Fellows. These

Fellows, all women scientists in the early stages

of their scientific careers, were selected for their

outstanding achievements and contributions in

their chosen fields. Past Fellows have included

biologists, botanists, zoologists, doctors,

astronomers and physicists.

Our students were given the opportunity to hear

from the Fellows including their scientific

interests and the discoveries they have made.

After each presentation, students were able to

ask each female scientist questions and engage in

general discussion regarding their field of

expertise.

The event allowed our five students to listen to

the Fellow’s experience as woman scientists,

while also discussing the potential for future

study or careers in Science.

After the forum, students enjoyed a tour of the

UNSW campus, guided by current UNSW Science

students. Lunch was also provided and allowed a

further chance for students and teachers to

interact with the Fellows.

Year 7 Excursion to Sydney Observatory

and Sydney Harbour Bridge

On Friday 2nd December, Mr Azzopardi, Ms Zhang

and twenty two Year 7 students participated in a

fun and informative excursion to The Sydney

Observatory in Miller’s Point, Sydney.

The excursion was hosted by ASPIRE, which is an

innovative partnership between Granville South

CAPA High School and the University of New

South Wales (UNSW). The program works with

students of all ages to build awareness about

higher education opportunities and encourage

students to think more broadly about their

future.

Within the Sydney Observatory, our students

participated in a ninety minute astronomy

workshop. This workshop provided an

opportunity for students to view the life cycle of a

star in spectacular 3D, journey through space and

time in a digital planetarium, and control a

computerised telescope to look at the surface of

the sun.

Following the workshop, ASPIRE staff and UNSW

student volunteers guided our students with a

walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Students

took the pedestrian walkway on the southern

side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. While walking

across the bridge, students experienced great

views of the Opera House, city skyline and Sydney

Harbour. It was such a beautiful day on the bridge

to frame our memory with big smiles in photos.

Congratulations to the following students for

their participation and excellent behaviour during

the excursion: Belal Abu-Issa, Omar Ajaj, Layal

Ajaje, Mariam Al Hirz, Myah Alameddine, Fatmh

Alassadi, Mohamad Alesbahi, Esam Al Khazaaly,

UAC Advice on Subject Bonus Points

Some UAC institutions may allocate bonus points

in recognition of your performance in Year 12

subjects that are relevant to the course/s for

which you have applied. These are subject bonus

points.

Bonus points do not change your ATAR; they

change your selection rank for a particular course

or institution. As the bonus point’s schemes for

each institution, and often for each course, are

different, your selection rank can be different for

each course you list in your course preferences.

Check each University here: http://www.uac.edu.au/atar/bonus-
