A further 240 people completeda questionnaire to say theywanted to be involved in this newventure, through becoming prayerwarriors, participating in the newdaily, morning and evening prayermeetings, or by contributingfinancially to the ongoing costs ofthePrayerCentre.

There was, from the beginning, asensethatGodwasinthisventure, and the fact that it has now beenrunning continuously for 10 years, tomymind, demonstratesthatthisis led of the Holy Spirit. A human-inspired venture, no matter hownobleacause, wouldhaverunoutofsteambeforenow.

I would like to remind us of thespecific objectives of the PrayerCentre, uponwhich itwasfoundedandhascontinued tobe run.Theyareasfollows:

To be a place where God’s peoplecontinually:

1. Offer prayers up to the Lord, e s t a b l i s h i n g an unbroken c o m m u n i o n between ECC and God (Revelation 8:3-4).

This has always beenthe primary purposeand emphasis ofthe Prayer Centre.Revelation 8:3-4describes how theprayers of God’s

people come up to God likesweet-smelling incense.Communion with God throughprayer is of the utmostimportance and the highestpurpose. As ECC remains inunbrokencommunionwithGodthrough 24/7 prayer, it createstheenvironmentforGod’spowerandmiraculouspresencetobeinevidenceamongstus.

2. Seek God for revival, as demonstrated by the salvation of many, and for signs, wonders and miracles to be commonplace in ECC and amongst the members of ECC (Mark 16:17-28).

Ourpurposeonearth isnot tocreate a ‘glory club’, seekingonlytosatisfyourownspiritualor physical interests. Instead,Jesus has empowered andcommissioned each of us,as members of his church, totake his delegated authorityinto the world and to fulfil his

It was in June 2002 that the ECC 24-hour Prayer Centre first began. Not long beforehand, we had converted

the heating system of the ECC building from oil to gas. This meant that the old boiler room had become

redundant. After sharing the vision with the church, two people individually

donated £10,000 each, which enabled us to convert that old boiler room into the hub for 24/7 prayer. Perhaps that contained a prophetic symbol, where the powerhouse for natural fire would become the powerhouse for spiritual fire.

Great Commission to: preachthe Gospel; cast out demons;heal thesick, andusethegiftsof theSpirit. The ‘supernatural’should be the ‘natural’ for thechurch that is living out thatCommission.

3. Pray for our nation to turn back to the Lord (2 Chronicles 7:14).

We live in dark and desperatetimes.Thereisaspiritualbattleraging for the heart and soulof this nation, and currentlythe powers of darkness havethe upper hand. They controlthe hearts and minds of thosewho rule over us, those whoare in positions of influence inour national institutions, and apopulationnow largely ignorantof the life-changingmessageoftheGospel,andwholiveforthe

In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God setsouttheconditionsforaspiritualrevivalofthenation.ItdependswhollyontheChurch.Politiciansdo not have the ability or theunderstanding of how to stopthe nation’s downward spiralto destruction. The conditionsareforGod’speopletohumblethemselves, pray and seekGod’s face, and to turn fromtheir wicked ways. When theydo this wholeheartedly, Godwill hear from heaven, forgivetheir sin and heal their land. For the Church not to pray forrevival of the nation is surelyselfish and cold-hearted, for itcondemnsthisgeneration-andsubsequent generations - to asociety without Christ, being atthe mercy of whatever godlessregime that takes the reins ofgovernmentandpower.

4. Intercede for the needs of all who ask for prayer, expecting to see an answer (Colossians 4:12).

Currently around 1,200 peoplea month call the Prayer Centrearoundtheclock.Manygratefulpeople call back to inform usof the answers to prayer for allsorts of situations that havetakenplaceastheywerebeingprayedfor, oraftersuchprayershave been made. This is apowerful testimony to the factthatJesusisaliveandintimatelyconcerned with the needs andsituations of individuals. He ispreparedtointerveneinanswertoprayer.

5. Form a ministry of evangelistic prayer – a point of first-time contact with the outside community, pointing them to Christ, who alone can meet their every spiritual, emotional and physical need (Ephesians 6:18).

update from the Philippines, by Pastor Mark King

InSeptember2004,Imovedmy family and my officefrom ECC to Cebu in the

Philippines, to work alongsidetheindigenousmissionariesinthenorthoftheisland, inacitycalledDanao.Theplanwastobe away for three years, butGod had other ideas! Almosteightyears later, Ibelieve it isGod’s timing for me to movemy office back to London tocontinue to help advance HisKingdomintheUKatECC!

Family

During our time in Cebu, wehave enjoyed both happy andsad occasions. In July 2008,we gained a son-in-law, whenour eldest daughter, Corrina,marriedAndrewBlake.Corrinagraduateduniversity;Georginaisabouttodothesame,whileDaniscomingtotheendofhisfirstyear.CoraandIcelebratedour25thweddinganniversary,and by the time you read this

thanktheLordforHisprotectionover our lives during our timeon the mission field, whereweenjoyedHisprotectionandgoodhealth.

Ministry

I cannot even begin to thinkabout the number of livesthat have been touchedand changed in Cebu since2004. Through visiting teams, medical missions, feedingprogrammes, livelihoodprojects, building homes andother holistic outreaches,God has used ECC to form

a ministry that continues toaffectand influencehundredsof lives. The ministry thatstarted in a small barangay(village) in the mountains ofDanao has now ‘extended itscords’ to touch lives on theneighbouring island of Bohol,to Manila in the north anddown south to Iligan City inthe region of Mindano, wherewe are helping the victims oflast December’s devastatingtyphoontorecover.

PCC

PCC(PortlandChristianCenter)has become the cornerstoneof the ministry since it wasplanted in February 2005.Starting as an outreach Biblestudy with four non-believers,PCChasgrown toachurchofover 200 people! I was bothflatteredandencouragedwhenPastor Richard, on one of hisvisits to Cebu, described PCCas a ‘mini ECC’. Although wedidn’tdirectlysetouttomodelPCC on ECC, this is exactlywhathashappened–togreateffect!

There is now a thriving prayerministry, leadership training, children and youth ministry, discipleship programme, strong evangelistic outreachand church planting strategyinplace, allpointingtowardsahealthyfutureforthechurch.

Recently, PCC registered asan organisation under thePhilippines Security ExchangeCommission. It now owns itsown land, and has purchasedan adjacent piece of land inorder to build classroomsand caretaker quarters. Anapplication to become part ofElim Global is currently beingprocessed.

Legacy

Every leader knows that themeasure of their success isdependent on the strength oftheir legacy, and that his/hermainpriorityshouldbetoraiseup a successor. In July 2011,JenCampaner,whommywifeand I have been mentoringfor the entire period we havebeen in Cebu, was ordainedas senior minister. It was avery proud moment for us tohand the leadership over to

Jen, knowing that she is bothcapableandchosenbyGodtolead PCC into the fresh visionHe has revealed to her. She,along with Pastors Evan andOnie, complement each otherinapproach, styleandcalling. We have recently added two

full-time and part-time staffmembers, who are ‘home-grown'leaders.Theywillassistin strengthening the areas ofadministration, maintenanceandpastoralministry.

Projects

The incredible pride I havein seeing the results of theCSP (Child SponsorshipProgramme) and Bethlehemprojects is immeasurable.I recently attended thegraduation of Apple andHelbert – two CSP students, who have been sponsoredsince high school. It was anamazing experience to seethem graduate their coursesand, inparticular, torepresentHelbert’s parents. Apple hasnow joined the ministry asa ministerial assistant, andHelbert will be starting his

own catering business. I wantto thank all of you who havesponsored and continue tosponsortheCSPprogramme–youarechangingthedestiniesofsomanychildren!

I have estimated that the pigfarming project (PFP) hasproduced over 500 piglets, however, I cannot account forhow many piglets have beenproduced after the individualbusinesseshavebeensetup! Many members of both thechurch and local communityhave benefited from thisProject. Thanks to all of youwho have supported this on-goingProject.

Having a roof over my headis one thing I thank God foron a daily basis – the ‘Homefor Life’ Project has providedfifty-five houses for peoplein deprived areas since itsintroduction in 2005. Add tothis the occasions where wehelppeoplecompleteahousethey can’t afford to finish. This has been a wonderfulevangelistic tool, and onewhere it speaks the love ofJesusinthecommunitywithoutpreachingaword.

It is very difficult to recall allthathasbeenachieved inthetime we have been in Cebu, butIcanproudlysaythatithasbeen a sound investment ofECC’stime, personnel, financeandresources.

Thefoundationhasbeenlaid.

GOD WILL MAKE A WAY

God has given me theboldness to witness to

my work colleagues at workon several occasions. Onone such occasion, I had theopportunitytospeaktoaworkcolleaguewhohasahistoryofalong-standingsickness.

Shewasoftenattackedinhersleep at night. Due to this, shecouldnotsleepproperlyatnight. I explained to her thatJesus is my Healer and hasalsohealedmeofthisproblembeforenow.Sheclaimedthatshe had tried everything, andthatnothinghashelpedhertosleep at night. I then offeredtogiveherafewprayercloths,

and suggested that she putsthem underneath her pillowwhensheslept.Thefollowingday, shetoldmethatshesleptvery well - like never before -andthattheprayerclothreallyworked!!

She did not know why theyworked, andaskedifshecouldhave more prayer cloths. Italso gave me the wonderfulopportunity to share thepower of Jesus Christ, and Iemphasised that He could domuchmoreforher, deliverhertotallyfromhernightlyattacks, andhelpherineverywayifshewould only totally surrenderherlifetoJesus.

She is thinking about it, andmeanwhile keeps asking mequestions every day and sheobviouslywantstoknowmoreaboutJesus.Iwillkeepprayingfor her, as we do during ourDiscipleshipCellmeeting.

Another opportunity camerecently, whenIwashavingmylunchbreak.Aworkcolleaguefrom another departmententered into the locker roomwhere I was reading a book. She was not feeling well, andshe laid down waiting for anambulance to come and takehertohospital.Icameovertoaskher if sheneededadrinkofwater,or ifsheneededanyhelp. However, deep down Ihadaburningquestiontoaskher what was wrong with her.Previously, I have never gottoknowherwellbecausesheisnotachattykindofperson, and did not talk much withme.Iwentbacktoreadingmybook. Finally, I came back toher and asked her what waswrongwithhermedically.Sheexplainedthatshehashadaneating disorder for more than26 years, and she needed togotohospitalforacheck-up.

I asked her if I could pray forher. Shesaid“Yes”.Shewasquitehappyformetoprayforher. I prayed, and then theopportunityopenedup formeto speak to her about Jesus’healing power and, to mysurprise, shetoldmethatshehad even written a book ondifferent religions some yearsago. I invited her to come totheRevivalPrayerandHealingmeeting.

I am so encouraged withthe opportunities that Godgives us every day to sharethe love of God with people.Sometimes we don’t suspecttherearepeoplewhoneedourprayers and encouragement. We just need to grab thoseopportunities;removebarriers;step out in faith, and trustthe Holy Spirit to guide us toshare JesusandHis lovewithothers.

Ruth Trbojevic and Sam Blake have both served in ECC over many years, leading the Youth and Children Ministries, and the Worship Ministry (respectively), and both have recently been accepted by Elim’s National Leadership Team as Ministers in Training (MiT). Full-time Bible School training is a necessary part of such preparation and so, during their time of preparation, Ruth studied for three years and Sam for two. hurch Spiritual grow

th

As we come to the 10th anniversary of our 24/7 Prayer Centre, we go back to look at aspects of the prayer life of the One who shows the importance of prayer and how pray – Jesus himself. If Jesus, who always remained sinless and an example of perfect humanity - as God always intended it to be, found it necessary to make prayer his priority, how much more should we?

There was something so different about the way Jesus prayed that his disciples asked him, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). God has paid a great cost to enable us, who are sinful people, to be redeemed through our faith in Christ, and so be able to come boldly to the Source of all being and power. “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have One who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:14-16).

Jesus is the High Priest through whom we have immediate and unrestricted access to the very presence of God. Jesus is also the One who modelled a life of prayer to those around him, so that we can understand how to pray, when to pray and what to pray for, in ways that are effective and fruitful. The disciples saw and understood the connection between the prayer life of Jesus and the amazing impact he had on all around him; it was one of the things that marked him out as so different from others. And yet, it was something the disciples knew instinctively was a possibility for them to emulate, so they too could walk in the power of God.

What is Jesus doing now, having ascended into Heaven? So essential is the life of prayer that the Bible shows us that Jesus is continuing his intercessory ministry even now: “Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died – more than that, who was raised to life – is at the right hand of God, and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” (Romans 8:34-5). It continues by saying, “Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them” (Hebrews 7:25).

This month, as we take some aspects from the prayer life of Jesus, and from the things he said or experienced about prayer, we are following in the footsteps of the disciples as they asked him to show them how to pray. We see Jesus in intimate conversation with the Father. We see him rejoicing in prayer to the Father, as he sees his disciples moving in the power of the Holy Spirit. We see his guidelines on what to prioritise and ask for in prayer, as he gives us a model prayer. We overhear him praying his great High Priestly prayer before he goes to the cross. We observe him in prayer, as he goes through the greatest crisis and test of his life at the cross. And we ask, “Lord, teach us to pray,” so that we can move effectively in the presence and power of God.

What we think about God is the single most

important thing in our spiritual life. Our image of God will drive every single part of our life, and will influence how we appear before the world. Do we live a life of faith, boldness and conviction? If we don’t, we need to examine our perception of God.

“Perfect love casts out all fear.”

This very short statement- together with another:“The fear of the Lord is

the beginning of all wisdom”- would seem to indicate that‘fear’ should be reserved forGod alone. 1 Corinthians 13tellsus,“Loveispatient,kind,keeps no records of wrongs, always trusts, rejoices intruth...”Thatsaid,themotivesformanyofthedecisionswemakeeveryminuteofeverydaymightjustbe fear-based, rather thanlove-based.I’m sure you know, we havemore control and influencethan we could ever imagineover those difficult situationsatworkandhome.Howisthispossible? Think, how are youinfluencedtomakechangesinyourlife?Byhearingorseeingsomething that you believewill be good for you. Agreed?

OK, if that is true for you, thendoyouthinkit istrueforeveryone else in the world? Ithink so, too. Therefore, thefirst thing is to live what webelieve: Perfect love "CASTSOUT" fear. When we live withlove, all things are possible.Sometimestheenthusiasmto‘preach’ gets in the way ofsimply communicating LOVE,which casts out all fear andinfluences people. Here's adifficult statement: What webelievedetermineshowweliveand the decisions we makeeveryminuteofeveryday.Forexample, choosing to loveeveryonewhomakesmistakeswill, among other things, bedisplayed by your patience toexplainhowtogetthingsdoneproperly, without judgmentor condemnation. Choosingto repay every negativeaction or comment with lovemakes us the stronger, moreconfidentperson.Choosing tobring perfect love into everysituationmeansYOUarenon-verbally communicating your

‘lifestyle’ to everyone withwhom you come into contact. Now, like you, everyonelearns from seeing andhearing - your patience, yourkindness, your long-suffering,your understanding, yourwisdom, your insights, yourpeacefulness, yourtenderness, your optimism and your joy. These traits are contagious, but know this, there is anenemy who is adamant toensure that you never displaythis lifestyle to anyone. It isvitallyimportant, however, thatyou continue living your ‘lovelifestyle’, because that's theeasiest way to influence theworld.Fear can prevent us fromachieving both physicaland spiritual things. Haveyou ever felt nervous aboutmeeting someone new, or feltdiscouragedfromattendinganeventbecauseyoudon'tknowanyone going? It’s all fear. Inthe same way, fear preventsus from achieving spiritualthings, but LOVE casts out

fear, and enables us to haveconfidence.PractisethefruitsofLOVE.Weall know people who infuriateus, but practise patienceand understanding with thatperson; listen to them. Iknowit’sdifficult; I knowputtingupwith that person is hard, butthe reward is totally worth it-bothinHeavenandonearth.Youmayfindout,toyourshockamazement, that the personlooks up to you, and wantsyouracknowledgement!Givingpeople love (spelt T-I-M-E) isworthit.Stayblessed.

Once again this year,ECC sent someonealong on the ElimI n t e r n a t i o n a l

Missions - organised EverestBase Camp Trek - to raisemoney for Elim-drivenhumanitarianprojectsinNepal,includingbuildingschoolsanddigging wells to provide muchneeded fresh water, as wellas to improve sanitation. ECChas a particular interest, inthat we have our missionary,Bhab Ghale in Nepal, workingamongst the local people andplanting churches in remotevillages.

Last year, we sent KatariinaSabah, whocompletedthetrekand - with your contributions- reachedhermonetary targetforthisgoodcause.Thisyear,it was Samir Chovan, whoalso successfully completedthe trek and is still open tosponsorship.

We recently caught up withSamir to ask him a fewquestionsaboutthetrip...

Could you kindly tell us a little bit about yourself?

I was born in India and grewup in Austria. I am happilymarried to Babal, a virtuouswoman, and we are blessedwith three children. But forBabal,Iwouldstillbewallowingin sin. Babal gave her life toChrist a very long time ago,and never stopped prayingthat God would change me.TheBiblesays, “Hewho findsawifefindsagoodthing.”IamgratefultoGodforblessingmewiththisgoodwoman.

Have you been a Christian for long?

No.MyChristianjourneybeganon27thFebruary2011,whenitbecameapparentthatIcouldnot continue a life of sin, as Ihad been doing for some 25years: drinking and smoking(including weed). Soon afterthis, I got baptised in April2011,andhavesincegivenupallmybadhabits.

What informed your decision to participate in the trek?

Babalkept remindingmethatall skills are to be used forbuildingGod’sKingdomandtobringHimglory.Myparticipationwas thus a combination ofher encouragement, my lovefor climbing, and the need toglorifyGod.

Were there specific exercises and dietary regimes carried out before departing?

I have always been fit, havingserved as a marine in theAustrian Army. I am also anavidclimberwithaSinglePitchAdvance (SPA) qualification, meaning I am qualified toclimb mountains, and wasalready doing regular climbingas a hobby. Consequently,I needed neither specificexercises nor special dietaryneeds. However, I carried outrestricted breathing exercisesto help with breathing on thetrek.

How many people were in your climbing party?

There were 10 people in totalin our party. Steve, basedin Nepal and involved withthe work there, led the trek;

Jenny, Andy, Mike and myselfwere all from the UK doingthe sponsored trek; two localguides, andthreelocalporterscarryingthemainrucksacks.

However, there were manyotherpartiesonthemountainat thesametimeasus, giventhat the climbing season wasjustbeginning.

Your destination was the South Base Camp on the Nepalese side of Everest, which is 5,364 metres (17,598 ft) high. How many people in the party succeeded in climbing to the Camp?

Eight of us successfully madeittoBaseCamp.

What happened to the other two?

Unfortunately, Andy and oneof the local guides camedownwithHAPE(HighAltitudePulmonary Edema), and hadtobeflownbackbyhelicopterto Kathmandu for medicalattention. Thank God, theymadeafullrecovery.

What is HAPE?

HAPE is basically theaccumulation of fluid inthe lungs. Also known asMountainorAltitudeSickness,it is caused by a decreasein the oxygen level in the airthe higher one goes (typicallyabove 2,500 metres). HAPEcauses breathing difficulties, and is the major cause ofdeath related to high-altitudeexposure. The mortality rateis veryhigh in theabsenceofquickandadequateemergencytreatment.

How long did it take to get to the Base Camp?

IttookussixdaystogettotheBaseCamp.

We heard you got bragging rights by going further than

the Base Camp. How much further up did you personally climb?

Mike and I climbed further toKala Patthar, which is 5,545metres high. The others didnot attempt to, as it was atreacherous climb whichrequiredsomeexpertise.

With mountain climbing as a hobby, what other mountains have you climbed?

I have climbed Grossglockner(3,798metres)andDachstein(2,995metres)-bothinAustria,Mont Blanc (4,810 metres) inFrance,andBenNevis(1,344metres)inScotland.

Having climbed a number of different mountains, what expectation(s) did you have of Everest, and does it justify its local Nepalese name of Sagarmatha (“Head of the Sky”)?

You very quickly see why thelocalscallEverestSagarmatha.Compared toothermountainsI had climbed, this washigh. People with climbingexperience hold a respectfor Everest. Even before wearrived in Nepal, I held acertainrespectforEverest.Forme, seeingEverestdoesbringtheawesomenessofGod intosharp focus; it is only a greatGod who can make such anawe-inspiringandspectacularlybeautifulmountain!

What were the conditions like at the Base Camp?

The conditions at the BaseCamp were basic and, ofcourse, cold.Therearesevereconsequences for not beingsuitably equipped for thecold, and for not having therightgear!Thestunningviewsthroughout the trek morethan compensated for theconditions, however.Sodidthefact that we took communionat theBaseCamp, makingus

membersofanexclusiveclub! Were there complications on the way?

There were not too manycomplications, apart from theevacuationofthetwopeoplewhobecameill.(Unlessyoucallpeoplestrugglingtocarrytheirluggageupthemountainacomplication!)

What was your feeling, having achieved your aim?

Iwassothankful to theLordthatHe made it possible for someonelikemetocarryoutandcompletethis task, where many othershave failed. Indeed, I count it ablessing that I have been able todo something that would touchtheNepalesepeoplewiththeloveofChrist.Thesearepeoplewho, inspite of being one of the poorestin the world, are very warm andwelcoming.

If the opportunity were to arise, would you do this again?

Without any hesitation, becausethis was one of the greatestadventures I have personallycompleted. But more importantly, such treks help raise funds forvaluable Christian work in Nepal,a country that desperately needsChrist.

PLEASE SEE EITHER SAMIR OR ELDER AKIN IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE TO MONEY RAISED FOR THIS KINGDOM WORK.

ASIAN EVENING / EASTER CONCERT

EALING CHRISTIAN CENTRE (ECC) is part of the Elim Pentecostal family of churches, of which there are around 600 in the UK,

and which is in fellowship with approximately 8000 churches worldwide. Year by year, ECC has continued to grow steadily with people coming from every continent, joyfully blending into a multi-ethnic family, drawn from approx 100 nationalities. With its emphasis on prayer, worship, fellowship, discipleship and evangelism, the church seeks to live out its motto.

Now hundreds of Christians - of all ages and backgrounds - meet together for lively celebration on Sundays in the beautifully-restored decor of the 1200-seater auditorium, a former Odeon cinema, and in small Discipleship Cell groups during the week.
