OVERVIEW

OVERALL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

To provide an analysis and comparison of the Santa Monica College, Design Technology Department website to the sites of 5 similar and competing schools . This will help to better understand the needs for the redesign and gather data on the effectiveness and usability of the site . This report will compile a list of features in a matrix format to establish site offerings using simple comparison methods . The final report will show what works and what doesn’t work within each site, provide individual site analysis and comments, as well as provide final recommendations for possible implementation into the redesigned site .

METHODOLOGY

The analysis will be conducted and compiled using several task-oriented tests for each of the sites with a user-based orientation instead of a developer’s point of view . This analysis, though informal, will allow a range of observations, input, and overall use of each site .

The order in which the analysis will be conducted is:1 . Performing individual evaluations2 . Comparing features3 . Making overall evaluations

DELIVERABLES

The final report will contain an overview of each site, including screenshots, specific features, differentiating factors, and ratings . Also included will be a features grid, which shows a breakdown of the competitive sites into specific industry categories, and specific features divided into graphic, technical, content, and site-specific categories . The final report will also contain overall recommendations for the possible implementation of specific features that were highly rated and should be considered in the site’s redesign .

(Note: The information compiled in this report is based on general use and informal opinions and should be taken for recommendations only.)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The websites of six competitive design schools were analyzed in order to determine the most appealing and effective features that will help guide the redesign of www .smcdesigntech .org . The current SMC Design Technology website was included in this set . Another community college website was analyzed as well as 2 private universities, a public university, and a masters program .

There is a lot of information that needs to be included on a college’s site . Simple primary navigation that reveals a wealth of sub navigation was most effective as a user trying to find information on the tested sites . The most successful sites provided all the information someone is looking for organized in a way that is not overwhelming .

Quick links for different types of users such as “Prospective Students”, “Students”, “Parents”, “Alumni”, was also very effective . For example, if I wanted to find the cost of the program, one intuitive way would be to go to the “Parents” link . The top level page revealed by the “Alumni” link is an excellent place to make a donations feature prominent .

The biggest problem I found on the current SMC Design Technology site is that it is very unclear what the site is about . It isn’t clear that it is a school and it is hard to understand what the user is supposed to do on the site . Clearer hierarchy and images of students work would be a very effective way to solve that problem . Also, the nature of the programs represented on the Design Technology website makes it essential to have current features such as a responsive design .

Places on the site where faculty can go to find and share resources is also a really nice feature to have on the redesigned site . It provides another level of community and helps keep teachers current in a field where essential information is changing by the second . Fresh content also keeps the site feeling alive which was something severely lacking in similar departments of other California community colleges .

Santa Monica College is known to have an excellent design program and their website should reflect that . Having a strong site will also give prospective students more confidence in that reputation .

Classification: Private University

This site immediately captures you with an array of work done by very talented undergraduate students . Once you identify yourself using the side navigation (Prospective Student, Student, Parent, Alumni) you are led to a well organized page where you will easily find everything you are looking for and more . It stays current and cutting edge with a fully responsive design and features such as video student profiles .

The Otis College of Art and Design Website may not capture you at first glance but once you start moving around the site the organization of content and ease of use will keep you on the site . Simple primary navigation reveals a wealth of sub pages that will guide you to the content you are looking for . Rich color blocking also adds to the positive user experience . This site has great SEO but page loading time on is a problem .

Using color blocking and a creative layout, this site immediately gives you the impression of a fresh, innovative, and forward thinking atmosphere . Being part of a larger university site definitely hurts this department site . It is easy to lose your way and stumble out of the department only to become overwhelmed by the rest of the state university site . There isn’t a solid understanding of who they are and what they offer . Too many unrelated things are given equal importance . It is a much nicer experience however on a mobile device .

After a few minutes on this site, you realize that it has been neglected and possibly abandoned . There is no new content and lot of links to nowhere . It is very hard to get any information from this site and makes you question whether this school is still open for business . The site is also not responsive .

At first glance the site seems very friendly and you can tell that there are a lot of new things going on by the current content being featured . As soon as you start to use the site however, things become confusing . It is unclear what the site is and what it wants you to do . It says Santa Monica College but doesn’t have similar branding . Is this a separate school? Is it a school at all? Something exciting is going on here but the organization of the site is preventing us from knowing exactly what that is .
