Data Analysis & Probability (6-8)
Teachers can allow students to use this tool to summarize data using the various types of graphs. Allow students to use the vm(virtual manipulative) to check their homework and explore new data
This site is a little more advanced, I would first allow students to explore it in small groups or with direct instruction

In this virtual game students conduct
probability experiments by setting certain
parameters of the simulation (such as the
number of dice to roll, the number of rolls
per round, etc. ), and then analyzing a
display of the frequencies of the various
dice totals

Mean, Median, Box & Whisker
This vm is simple to use and includes instructions for use.
I like this vm better than the previous link
because its more kid-friendly (app. for 4-6)
The only downside to this vm is the user can
only plot numbers 0-100.

This vm can be used to analyze data with bar
graphs, line graphs, pie charts, and pictographs. You can enter multiple rows and
columns of data, select which set(s) to
display in a graph, and choose the type of representation.
More appropriate for all ages- format isn't too
complicated and isn't too childish.

This vm coin toss is very kid-friendly. It allows
students to make predictions and decisions. I would recommend it for 4th and 5th grade
students

In this activity, students examine the United States
Census Bureau Web site to investigate projections
of the total population of states from 1995-2025.
Using the provided data, students will analyze
statistics from five states of their choice, develop
specific research questions using the data, and
create three graphs to compare and contrast
the information.

students collect and display data in a variety of ways, beginning with tallies and
pictographs. Later lessons focus on
representing data using bar graphs, line plots, circle graphs, box-and-whisker plots, and
glyphs. The students also compare graphs
from two sets of data and find the range, median, mean, and mode of each set.

In this unit, students participate in activities in which they analyze information
represented graphically. Students are
asked to discuss, describe, read, and write
about the graphs and the information they
contain.

It takes about 10 minutes to get to it, but
there is a lesson in this cartoon episode about probability and graphing.
I wouldn’t show this clip as a lesson, but it
could be something I have students watch as extra credit and have them answer questions
about it. It plays a role, but nothing pertinent.

Literature
I began to add books from this great site I found but they all seemed so awesome, so, I just decided to include the link!
http://www.the-best-childrens-books.org/teaching-graphs.html
The site includes info about each book: reading/difficulty/DRA level, info about book, what the site likes about it, and a link to buy it on Amazon! It doesn’t seem like this book is endorsed by any publishers, so, their choices are bias-free.
