GraphLab Create VMWare Instructions The following are instructions to run a GraphLab Create virtual machine with VMWare Player on Windows. GraphLab Create VMWare Instructions

The following are instructions to run a GraphLab Create virtual machine with VMWare Player on Windows. For more information on running VMWare virtual machines, see http://www.vmware.com/support.html.   

Requirements ● 64bit machine ● At least 4GB RAM to allocate for the virtual machine 

○ If you have a laptop with 8GB of RAM, 4GB will be given to the virtual machine ● At least 2 cores ● At least 10GB hard disk space free

Instructions 1. Install VMware Player 

Follow the instructions on VMWare’s homepage to download and install VMWare Player:  https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_player/6_0  

2. Download and unzip the GraphLab Create image file:  a. In the US

a. Some users will see a warning about BIOS settings being 64bit incompatible, see known issues at the end of this document.  

 4. Select “Open a Virtual Machine” and navigate to the unzipped Graphlab_VM directory, 

select the Graphlab_VM_*.vmx file

“Take Ownership” in the prompt

i.  ii. Once at the main login, the user_id:password is graphlab:graphlab iii. Is the screen tiny?  Getting a warning that VMWare Tools for Linux is 

available?  Installing VMWare Tools for Linux will create a better experience between the host operating system and the guest virtual machine.  Select “Download and Install” when prompted.

1.  iv. Prompts indicating which of your own hardware devices may be 

connected to your virtual machine may appear.  You may choose to connect these devices or not.

Known Issues ● Enable virtualization in your BIOS.  To run a 64 bit VM it may be necessary to ensure 

that virtualization is enabled in your BIOS. If Virtualization is not enabled you may get one of a few errors   

○ Error message of ‘VT­x not available’ ○ Selection menu which allows choosing only Ubuntu 32 bit

○  Example: Lenovo ThinkPad X230. To enable Virtualization you need to get into the BIOS configuration (press <enter> on startup) go to the Security menu Virtualization and enable both 

 ● Internet connection inside an organization may not work due to missing proxy settings 

○ Solution (for example for ACME network) sudo –i export http_proxy=http://proxy.acme.com:8080
