PROBLEM ADDRESSEDFarmers depend on either a tractor or a pair of bullock or labor for multiple agricultural
operations. A Tractor would be unaffordable or remain underutilized for farmers with small
land holdings. Need for farm labor is seasonal and availability is uncertain & generally
costly. The cost of fodder for a pair of bullock is on a rise. Aforesaid challenges coupled
with periodic drought forces every farmer to rethink and innovate solutions. Mr.
Mansukhbhai Jagani rose to the occasion and developed a multipurpose farming
machine which can perform all functions practically desired from a tractor, a pair of
bullock or farm labor, and yet very affordable. Investing in this machine offers solution to a
variety of repetitive problems that every farmer is confronted with.

Bullet Santi is a three wheeled ‘mini-tractor’ with various attachments. Other agricultural
machinery attachments can be further attached to it for various farm operations like
cultivation, shallow ploughing, sowing, weeding, spraying, interculturing, harrowing,

PROBLEM ADDRESSEDIn the dry cotton growing tracts of Gujarat and few other parts of the country, the
indigenous cotton varieties (like Kalyan – V 797, G-13 etc.) is grown, where the lint is tightly
attached to the inner side of the shell. Before ginning can take place, this lint has to be
stripped from the shell. This is a laborious process, manually carried out by mostly women
and children either at their home or at ginning mills.

Cotton Stripper machine removes lint from the cotton shell mechanically, faster and in an

The electricity operated machine operates in a straight lines cuts through compost heap,
turn and mix it well, even mix moisture when required, and heaps it back in a line.

A drum with tines/blades is fixed at its periphery & compost strikes to a net covering on
top of the drum because of which clods in the compost are broken. On the side of the
net there is a nozzle with a pipe, to spray water or chemical to kill fungus inside the
compost.
Conveyer belt is attached at the rear side of the drum for collecting turned compost.
Machine can properly turn and mix the compost ensuring that no lumps remain in it.
Machine helps in reducing the disease of Yellow mold in Mushroom.
Machine can add moisture and fungicide as well to control diseases.
It can be operated on all the surfaces easily - hard (pakka like cemented floor)
and soft (kachcha like farmer’s field).
Efficiency: Machine can heap mushroom compost of 200 ft. in length,
4 feet width and 4 feet height in 25 minutes. Using this machine, the
time required for compost preparation is reduced considerably.
Production of mushroom is about 5-10 % more than that
through the conventional manual process.

PROBLEM ADDRESSEDFertility value of well decomposed compost is excellent. Decomposition can be hastened
if the biomass is aerated, humidified and properly mixed. It is a time consuming (about 3-4
months) and laborious task to prepare the manure. The technology for thorough mixing
the compost for rapid compost mechanically is available abroad, although no such
domestic product is available. The fully prepared compost costs Rs. 2 per tonne with this
machine.

The process of turning the compost is mechanized. The innovation is a tractor driven machine,
consisting a rotor shaft at which number of straight blades made of carbon steel are fixed to cut
and thoroughly mix the bio-wastes while adding moisture as well. While the rotor rotates and
the blades cut the biomass, moisture is also added to the mixture. To cover the entire heap of
biomass, the tractor is slowly moved from one end of the heap to the other. This operation is
repeated four to five times at an interval of about five days in summer and interval of seven days
in winter. As a result the total time for converting biomass into manure reduces to 25 -40 days,
as against 120-150 days using conventional methods
The machine can cover a row of wastes disbursed by 100 trailers of size 11 ft x 6.5 ft x 2.5 ft
(i.e. about 400 ton) in one hour
Fuel consumption 3.5-4.0 litre per hour
The machine can be attached to any model of tractor of size 50 hp or above
The rotor, which is 16” in diameter, is nine feet long. Its 9”blades are helpful for breaking,

A hydraulic jack has been provided to facilitate the up and down movement of the rotor.
Water tank with 2000 litre capacity has been provided and water can be pumped to it

PROBLEM ADDRESSEDDifferent kinds of seed cum fertilizer drills are available in the market but demand of one
which can perform a multi speed sowing for mixed cropping remained unmet. Due to this
either sowing is done manually or even if any kind of seed drill is used it is not successful.
Innovator observed the problem and manufactured a seed drill which has a unique
metering system and can sow seeds of minimum quantity.

It is a seed drill system having a unique seed metering mechanism. It enables farmers to
carry out multi-seed sowing either simultaneously or in isolation.

Transmission system – chain sprocket assemblies and a bevel gear unit.
It has a cup and cone type seed metering mechanism, designed for mixed cropping
especially for small seeds. A handle, which is attached to the main shaft helps in lifting
up the machine and prevents wastage of seed crops at the time of sowing.
A very small quantity of 200 g of seed can be sown with the drill unlike other conventional
seed drills.
The drill can maintain uniform speed to seed distance and the seed level inside the seed
hopper can be seen from driver’s seat.
The device saves labor and time consumed in clearing seed containers for next seed
sowing. The seed rate can be adjusted from 3 kg/acre for a small size seed to 60
kg/acre for grain or similar crops.

PROBLEM ADDRESSEDSowing of seed is one of the most important farm operations and if not done properly and
at the right time, this may affect the yield drastically. Farmers adopt different methods to
ensure the proper sowing. Rich farmers may opt for tractor or animal operated seed drill
for speedy operations whereas poor farmers, who cannot afford them, sow seeds
manually. During manual sowing, traditionally, a hole is made in the land, seed is placed
and then the hole is covered by soil. This has to be done either by sitting or bending down,
which becomes painful (often leads to back pain) & time consuming for farmers as there
are hundreds of such seeds to be placed in the soil.

Seed Dibbler consists of a hollow pipe acting as a seed tube, having arrow shaped soil
opener at its lower end, and is connected with a seed/fertilizer container at upper end
using flexible pipes. The seed tube houses a metal rod with spring that can be pushed or
pulled at standing position using a hand lever. This allows seed aperture to drop seed(s)
through the soil opener when needed. Thus, sowing/gap filling can be done by first
penetrating the ground with help of the arrow-end and then pulling the lever to drop
seed(s) after the hole is dug and the ground is impregnated with seed, the hole can be
covered with a gentle tap by the leg.
It has a hollow metal pipe connected with arrow shaped iron strip, flexible pipe,
seed/fertilizer container and mechanism for permitting the seed/fertilizer to drop out.
Makes the operation easy, efficient by saving time and reducing labor cost.

This implement can remove buds from the sugarcane for plantation purpose to minimize
losses as well as time, money and seeds. By pressing the handle, the unit removes the
bud from the node of the sugarcane, which is then used for planting.
The device includes a hemispheric knife actuated by a hand operated lever.
One can chip 250 buds/hr (average). The experienced labor can even chip 400
buds/hr.

PROBLEM ADDRESSEDSowing of sugarcane buds and potato in field is laborious, time consuming and scarcity
of labor increases the problem multifold during sowing. Manual sowing of buds fails in
maintaining uniform distances between the buds, equal depth and supplying of equal
quantity of manure, which may cause unhealthy crop and less productivity. Sugarcane
Bud Planter overcome these issues & accomplishes sowing one buds in a non labor
intensive manner. Machine allows sowing one bud after another in a continuous pre-
defined manner with inter-spaces between the buds.

Sugarcane Bud Planter is a tractor mounted implement with a unique metering mechanism
for planting sugarcane buds directly into the field. The field capacity of the machine is 0.5
acre/ hour. Using this planter the plantation cost is estimated to reduce to about Rs 800/acre
from about Rs 6000/acre using labor. The machine becomes helpful for the farmers to
overcome the scarcity of laborers in the peak season due to high work rate. The machine
requires manpower only to fill the bud box whenever it gets empty.
It consists of two boxes on each side of machine for storing buds, a conveyor belt with
grooves for carrying buds, two pulleys to drive the belt, a hollow pipe, furrow opener and a
guide wheel/ground wheel. This assembly is driven by chain and sprocket mechanism.
Each box can stack sugarcane buds of 30 kg.
The conveyor belt driven by pulleys is fitted into the box such that it would pick one
sugarcane bud at a time.
These buds are then inserted into furrows prepared by furrow opener. Three furrows can
be prepared at a time.
Machine can sow 2 quintals of buds in 1 hr.
Maintains uniform distance between buds, equal depth of buds.
Inter-cropping can be done using this machine and between the two buds;
grams, wheat, peanuts and pulses can be planted.
Machine has arrangement to drop uniform amount of manure near each
bud while sowing.
Machine can also be equipped with sprayer pump to spray
weedicide & pesticides to prevent weeds & pest in the crop.
Machine can also be used for planting potatoes.

the drudgery and ensures that large cultivation is done with a throughput time and in a non

Turmeric and Ginger Planter comes with adjustable row spacing that can be attached to a
tractor. The planter opens the furrow, meters the seeds, then delivers and places them in

Bicycle sprayer is an attachment, which essentially uses the circular motions of the
sprockets to move the piston of the spray pump which generates pressure and eventually

converted to reciprocating motion of the piston and thus the pressure is generated and

It is a self propelled diesel engine operated weeder having L shaped blades arranged in
spiral configuration. The arm holding the tool is adjustable and retractable to enable the
weeder to move between the plants. Angle of shaft holding the tool can be changed for
changing direction of throw in the desired direction according to age of plants. The
machine can cover 0.22-0.25 ha/h with the fuel consumption of 1 lph.
The machine has a 5 hp air cooled engine (Greaves). There are four twisted L shaped
blades arranged in spiral configuration on 50 cm long rotor shaft. The weeder has a
cutting width 40 cm, and the tool can go up to 5 cm depth. The cutting shaft on which
blades are mounted rotates at a speed of 190 rpm.
The blades are made of carbon spring steel. The arm holding the tool is adjustable and
retractable to enable the weeder to move between the plants. Angle of shaft holding
the tool can be changed as per the age of plant.
The cutting shaft is kept perpendicular to direction of travel and leveled wrt ground for
removing weeds and uniform spreading of soil. This is done when the plants are
young (older than 1.5-2 months generally).
The machine can cover 0.22-0.25 ha/h with the fuel consumption of 1 l/h. It is suitable
for crops having R-R spacing more than 2.5" (like chilly, brinjal, cotton, jasmine,
banana, tomato, tobacco, etc). weight of machine 240 kg.
Weeder with provision of changing the angle of cutting shaft (holding the
blades) both in horizontal and vertical planes according to age of
plants for achieving better results of weeding and soil
annexing/drawing/uniform spreading.

It is driven by power take-off (PTO) through a belt and a pulley. Method of operation
involves mounting the crop harvester on rear of Power Tiller, starting the engine of power
tiller and eventually transmit the motion of the engine. An oscillating motion in the blades is
obtained which separates turmeric rhizomes from soil without damage.
The harvester attachment of power tiller (10-12 hp) consists of a blade with three bar
points for easy penetration into the soil. One depth control wheel which control depth
of digging throughout soil.
Eight slats of mild steel are hinged at the rear ends of blade.
The cutting width of blade is 10 “while that of rear end of slats is 22” (end to end)
forming a converged section.
Depending on soil type one can reduce/increase oscillations of harvesting slats by
changing driving pulley (4-7”).
It has a field capacity of about 0.2 acre per hour.
Increases the harvesting efficiency which leads to increase in yield
The cost of harvesting per acre almost reduces to half when the machine is
used for harvesting and laborers are engaged for collection.

The innovator has developed a versatile thresher that can overcome the cons of conventional threshers. It
is a high capacity thresher, which can handle multiple crops (cereals, pulses etc.) including groundnuts
with minimum machine adjustments. Threshed grains are cleaner and do not need further cleaning before
bagging up, which saves time and energy. The switch over time for setting it up for different crops is less
than 15 minutes. It contains an initial cutter that cuts the straws into pieces thereby reducing the power
consumption required for threshing.

Paddy thresher is a low cost motorized machine for threshing paddy. The body of the
machine is made of high quality steel and the feeding system is chute type and the power
is transmitted from the prime mover to threshing cylinder though belt and pulleys. The
machine runs on 5 hp power and can be operated with an electric motor or diesel engine.
The sieves in conventional threshers have been replaced by a blower to reduce costs.
Paddy is fed from the rear and led to the threshing cylinder, where the spikes act upon
each straw and separate the husk from the grain. Under the impact of the blower, the
straws eject out through the outlet in front while grains heap up on the ground underneath
the machine through a slot provided.

The thresher consists of a feeding hopper made of an iron sheet, a rotating wire-loop type
threshing drum and a concave metal sheet with a perforated bottom, all of which are
mounted on the main frame. Power from an electric motor is transmitted through the V-belt
and pulleys to the threshing drum. The harvested pepper spikes are directly fed to the
hopper through the rotating drum. The threshed pepper passes down through the
perforations and gets collected at the berry outlets.
There are two variants : Model 1 – Capacity 50 Kg , Model 2 – Capacity 100 Kg.
300 kg & 600 kg berries can be separated in an hour by Model 1 & Model 2 respectively.
The average threshing efficiency observed is 90 percent with only 2 to 3 per cent damage.
Machines can be operated with a half HP or one HP motor.
Can be operated automatically and also manually.
The machine can thresh 300 kg pepper in an hour, as against the comparative
conventional device which can just thresh 70 kg in an hour and manual labor 150 kg
in entire day
By changing the leaf blade, it can be used for threshing white pepper and
paddy as well whereas the conventional device cannot be used for
threshing paddy or other grains.
Ninety per cent of the berries can be separated from the spikes in
one run & no damage occurs to the skin of the pepper whereas
in conventional machine 20% of skin is destroyed Pepper
can be without need for manual labor.

PROBLEM ADDRESSEDSorting rice grain has been done manually for centuries. Rice grains can be divided into 3
categories- good grains, broken grains and black (inedible) grains. Along with sorting the
grains, husk and stones also need to be removed. Traditionally, husk is removed by
winnowing and seeds are sorted manually. The innovator has made a machine that works
on the principle of winnowing and sorts rice into its 3 categories and also separates husk
and stones.

The rice grain sorting machine is made from wood. It has a conical input feed for the rice to
be poured into. It also has a fan which is rotated to blow air. The machine has various holes
depending on where the different kinds of grains and husk fall.
The machine works on the principle of sorting by weight, just like winnowing. There is a
fan that is rotated to blow air into the rice falling into the machine. There are different
compartments made for different bits to get collected separately. The closest heap is
that of stones, which are heavier than rice seeds. Right after, fall the rice grains on a net
that separates them from broken grains. The husk falls farthest away. A little before the
husk, fall the bad grains. These grains are blackish and inedible.

The diameter of the fan is 22”.
Cost of the machine is Rs. 6000.
The innovator claims that the machine can produce 400 kg of good rice grains per
hour.
This machine can sort rice into good grains, broken grains, inedible

industries are small scale and run in tribal communities which are in business of
processing bamboo.. Most of the workers use traditional/conventional methods (use

affordable by industries but not affordable and useful for individual rural poor who are

The land leveler cum loader is a PTO driven rear mounted attachment of tractor which
collects sand from the surface through the scrapper blade and fills it in the tractor’s trailer
through a conveyor arrangement. It consists of two conveyors which are perpendicular to
each other in the plane, which is perpendicular to the plane of land.
The conveyor comprises a set of chains; it can cut 4” deep at a time and takes about
two minutes to fill an 11 ft x 6 ft x 2.25 ft size trailer.
It can fit in any tractor of 50 hp and above
While using this machine, the tractor consumes about five to six liters of diesel in an
hour.
The machine has cutting width of 4 ft and sand is dropped from a height of 8.5 ft height.
It seems to have great potential in some regions where soil has to be scrapped for
lifting canal water as well as in construction of roads, house etc.
On an average, the machine can level 1 bigha of land (5/8 acre) in a day by removing
150 trailers of sand.

Walnut cracker is a machine with wooden rollers to crack the walnuts for smoother

The innovative machine has a customized cutter (using hydraulic power) for cracking the
coconut. Once the coconut gets cracked, the coconut water goes into the water cooler

cubes and sand. The coconut water passes through these pipes and gets cooled to a

Cycle operated water lifting device comprising a cycle rim/flywheel mounted on the shaft

Innovation has unique design. It works on aerodynamic principle but it is a Drag Type low
height windmill for lifting ground water. It starts functioning at very low wind speed (i.e. about 8
to 10 km/ hr), very easy to use and maintain & cheap compared to conventional windmill.
The windmill structure is made from MS. The structure is divided into three main
components via; Base structure, intermediate structure and head assembly (Rotor,
crank and tail assembly).
For the conversion of rotary motion to reciprocating motion, crank and connecting rod
mechanism is used. The crank mechanism with the rod, which in turn is connected to
the cylinder at the bore.
Turbine blades are light weighted & are given the proper angle so that the higher wind
power can be harnessed and thereby can pump the water from greater depth.
Furling tail mechanism and manual brake system has been incorporated in the
windmill to safe guard it against the high wind velocity. The tail is being offset to the
central axis in proportion to the offset of the rotor from the same. The tail is mounted on
the inclined shaft in such a way that it gets restored as the wind speed comes down.
Very useful for pumping water up to the depth of 50 feet. The water discharge capacity
is about 1200 -1500 lit / hr at wind speed of 10–12 km/hr. The performance may
decrease while lifting water from depth more than 50 ft.
It can be fitted to a tube well or open well for light irrigation and potable
water too.
It is an eco-friendly product with low initial cost and minimal

Jayprakash’s innovative stove is a double-chambered efficient portable stove. It can use
coconut shell or wood as a fuel. Innovator has improvised the stove by incorporating a
secondary combustion chamber for burning the un-burnt bio mass and hydrocarbons
coming out with the smokes/exhaust. As a result, the thermal efficiency of the stove has
improved while the pollution has reduced.
There are two layers of ceramic materials having 2 inch gap between it. The outer wall
also has two openings for air inlet and the inner wall has secondary holes that facilitate
the burning of smoke that enhances the fuel efficiency. The air enters through the outer
wall gets heated in the annular chamber, and it enters through the holes through the
combustion chamber and hence provides full combustion.
Its burning efficiency 37.6% against an efficiency of 17% with other stoves.

PROBLEM ADDRESSEDOver the years, weavers faced common problems while working with the Jacquard looms.
Firstly, the handling of weft threads at various intervals and the tying of knots caused drudgery
and consumed a lot of time and effort. Secondly, working on designs that need simultaneous
handling of five or more threads requires great skill that only a few proficient weavers possess.
Thirdly, while handling broad designs or when the gap between the weft threads is too small,
the weavers find it difficult to slide their finger in to handle the wefts. To increase production
speeds a natured progressive step is to automate and cut down the repetitive process in

‘Double shuttle loom’ works on the same principle as that of any other standard manual
shuttle loom but is wider with the provision for two sets of warp rolls resulting in double
output in a given time.
In the double shuttle loom, there is a common horse shoe in the middle. When the first
shuttle strikes from one end, the middle horse-shoe strikes the second shuttle in the
same direction. Therefore, both the shuttles move in the same direction
simultaneously and the middle horse–shoe strikes one shuttle at a time.
The double shuttle loom is equipped with many ball bearings. Therefore weaving on
the double shuttle loom has become easier than any other single shuttle loom.
Double shuttle looms weave two fabrics at a time, unlike single shuttle loom where only
one fabric can be woven at a time.
This loom reduces the time consumption and needs fewer efforts for weaving as well.
The Double shuttle loom machine can accommodate other advanced machineries
like jacquard machine or “Chanakee” to enhance productivity level in design
fabrics.

automobile parts and ½ hp motor. This machine operates without any outside input. The
machine requires only one weaver per machine and the production capacity of this

This is a portable user friendly machine, which can simultaneously carry out the reeling as
well as spinning for different varieties of silk like Mulberry, Muga, Eri and Tasar without any
arduous human effort. The machine has five reeling heads with an electric switch each.
This enables one or more reeling heads to operate even if the switch of remaining head(s)
is off. The reeling is automated once the fine silk threads from the cocoons are fed to the
reeling end. The machine speed can also be regulated with the help of feeding pipes
attached along the thread lines. The reeling speed adjustment mechanism ensures silk
production of desired quality.
The normal size of the machine in the dimension of 28 inches x 20 inches x 12 inches
and it has five reeling heads.
There is one electric switch at each reeling heads. Thus, when the switch of one reeling
head is off, the remaining reeling heads can still operate.
The speed of the machine can also be regulated with the help of feeding pipes
attached along the thread lines.
The salient features of these machines are its compactness, easy portability and
strong durability.
The machine can use both solar energy and electricity. It performs effectively
even in cloudy weather and at night through a DC battery. The machine can

Muruganantham has developed a set of four different small machines namely de-
fiberation unit, core forming unit, sealing unit and UV sanitizing unit, which reduce the cost

In the first stage, by using deliberation unit, the raw material (wood fiber) is de-fibred to
produce soft pulp. In second stage, de-fibered pulp is given required shape of the napkin

The structure is like a swing, where the modifications have been done on the sitting
platform in the form of a chair. The platform is a parallelogram structured and the link,
which extends away from the ground, is the backrest for the chair and the link extending
towards ground is the leg support for the person sitting on the chair. The vertices of the
parallelogram are hinged, so as the entire setup can follow a specified path and the chair
may be used as an easy chair or as a bed. The structure is balanced in such a manner so
as if one transfers his/her entire weight on one side of the swing; he/she will no topple.

PROBLEM ADDRESSEDThe idea was inspired by the large number of road accidents in the newspaper. Wearing a
helmet reduces the chances and extent of injury. Arthi, Vinotha, Lailaa and Jitendra
independently thought about this problem and developed a device attached with helmet
to switch on/off ignition of a Motor Bike. The rider will not be able to start the bike unless
the rider does not put on the helmet and tie its strips.

It is an electronic device embedded in helmet with its transreceiver inside it and another
paired device connected to the ignition system of the bike. The Helmet has switch which
turn on the ignition system of the bike and then only the rider can start the bike.
Wireless device.
It has sensors in the helmet to detect the head of the person.
Micro controller circuit triggers the relay connected to the ignition to start the two-
wheeler.
The two-wheeler can be started only if the rider wears a helmet.
Compulsion of wearing helmet would reduce head injuries in accidents.
Innovators received award in IGNITE 2011, National competition for Students’ Ideas and
Innovation and received student award in NIF’s Eighth National Biennial Grassroots
Innovation Awards, 2015.

friend working in state electricity board died while working on 220 V line (power which
surged through 11kv feeder line). It was then Innovator thought of making a device, which

It is a handheld wireless electricity sensing device, which is compact, portable and light in
weight. This wireless device can sense electric current from a distance without touching
the wire or source of electricity.
Wireless Voltage Sensing Device consists of loop antenna, IC chip, buzzer, battery,
diodes, capacitor, potentiometer, external casing and a switch. In the circuit the loop
antenna detects the defect in the line by induction i.e. wirelessly.
This device can sense electric current up to 11 KV from 11 meters away from ground.
It can check electric current in transformers and concealed wires too.
The device has been tested and certified by Kerala State Electricity Board.
Innovator has won State award in NIF’s Eighth National Biennial Grassroots Innovation
Awards, 2015.

The wrapper picker machine developed by innovator is automatically picks up littered
pieces of wrappers, papers, pouches, etc and collects them in a storage bin.
Wrapper picker collects dust and wrappers with the help of two nylon brushes fitted on
rollers which rotate in the opposite direction to generate force to pull wrappers inside.
The width of the brushes is of 720 mm. So the wrapper picker can cover 720 mm width
at a time.
It is battery operated, it uses a 12 V 9Ah battery which can last up to 1h 15 min when
operated continuously. An LCD display is provided to show the name of the innovation
and the percentage of battery charging. It also has provision to indicate through a
beep when battery is low and it is fully charged.
The machine is very simple, easy to operate
and maintain. The machine very useful for sanitation
workers. It has great potential for diffusion by
Municipalities, Municipal Corporations, Town area Committees etc.

PROBLEM ADDRESSEDMan has constantly strived hard to find a solution for the most mortal and contagious
diseases like Malaria, Chikungunya, and Dengue fever etc. Most often we are becoming
victims to this communicable diseases mainly caused by Mosquitoes. Doctors say
‘Prevention is better than Cure’. But do we have that weapon which is not injurious to
human health. Most of the Mosquito destroyers like Mosquito repellents and mosquito
coils available in the market are injurious to human health. Because most of the mosquito
destroyers contain Allethrin which is a neuro toxic poison. To solve this issue innovator has
developed small equipment to kill Mosquitoes which use solar power.

The main specialty of this device is its scientific and eco friendly nature that makes it
different from other machines. The strategy used in this machine is making obstructions
for the reproduction of Mosquitoes. Hawker indirectly destroys 45000 mosquitoes by
simply killing one single female Mosquito. Hawker is the most effective way to combat
your existing Mosquito problem without any application of pesticides or chemicals. Thus,
it helps to avoid the use of insect repellents that contain the toxic Allethrin.
The smell from septic tank attracts mosquitoes and once the mosquitoes get trapped
they cannot escape.
The transparent plastic tubes act as a solar furnace and kills the mosquitoes.

Mitticool is a natural refrigerator made entirely from clay to provide natural coolness
without any electricity or any other artificial form of energy. It works on the principle of
evaporation. Water from the upper chambers drips down the side, and gets evaporated

used to store water.

The innovator has modified the normal pressure cooker and made it into a coffee- maker.
A simple attachment of a metal pipe along with pressure-releasing valve has been
provided in the cooker lid. Cooker with water is heated over a stove. Once steam is
formed, it is released through the metal pipe and collected in a jar containing a mixture of
coffee powder, milk and sugar. After allowing sufficient steam into the jar, in a few minutes,
frothy and tasty coffee is ready.

The innovator has developed three different sizes of fish dryer: Small, Medium and Large.
It is made up of metal sheets, with an in built charcoal and paddy husk burning space
inside. The upper rectangular shape chamber is the drying chamber and the lower, cone
shaped, perforated chamber is the charcoal chamber.
The charcoal chamber is directly connected and opens to the heating chamber/ drying
chamber. It has perforated plate, bigger than opening, attached to it so that heat from
the charcoal doesn’t enter directly to the heating chamber.
The heating chamber/ drying chamber lies above the perforated plate. The lower
surface of the chamber is perforated so that heat could easily pass through to the
chamber. The top portion of the chamber is covered with a slidable opening. Once the
top portion closed then the dryer becomes completely airtight.
About 100-150 g of charcoal is enough for one-to-two rounds of fish drying,
depending upon the quantity and type of drying for small fish dryer.
It consumes less time than the traditional one.
It is cost effective.
The charcoal and paddy husk is used as a fuel, so need no electricity.
The system is fully closed while the process of drying, so, dried fish
are protected from animals.

PROBLEM ADDRESSEDIn nurseries, conventionally plastic bags are used to grow the plant saplings. There are
many disadvantages associated with the plastic bags like not being bio-degradable,
having nil porosity, and hence not being eco friendly. Moreover, after germination, the bag
has to be torn off to facilitate root growth and in case the bag is not torn properly the plant
gets damaged to solve this issue innovator came up with idea of cow dung pot.

Innovator has developed eco-friendly pot by using cow dung and agriculture waste, which
is completely biodegradable. The innovation lies in the idea and achieving optimum
combination of mixers of cow dung and other natural binders used to make it sturdy and
resistant to pest.
The innovator has used animal manure normally called as Cow dung and wheat flour
(in the ration of 20:1 Kg) and agriculture waste (residue of harvested produce like
wheat husk etc) as a basic raw material to prepare the pot.
To protect the pot from pest attack (like termite) spoiled bajara flour or powder or shells
of castor leaf or neem leaf can be added in the mixture.
After keeping the mixture for nearly one hour, it is molded in the defined shape followed
by sun drying.
It is bio-degradable, is fertile and the manufacturing process does not cause pollution.
Water absorption rate by the pot is very slow and therefore prevents leaching of
nutrients.
The growth of the plant is faster in cow dung pot than other / normal pots.
This can be also used for sowing costly seeds directly in the field to get
maximum germination and growth of the plants / saplings.

Khimjibhai developed a device, ‘Panihari’ for reducing the problem. The Paniharihas two
extended supporting rod from circular disk that is put on the head to keep the vessel. Any
women can place these two supporting rods on her shoulder, which in turn raises the
circular disc just above her head. The device is further improved by engaging designers.
The improved version has cross platforms of bamboo/cane having anindoli at the center.
The two wings of cross platform are perpendicular to each other to distribute load on
head uniformly and provide visibility in all directions.
The platform (18” x 18”) is made of riding cane of diameter (0.5 -0.8” dia)
At the centre of the platform, conventional indoli is tied, which remains in direct contact
with head and provides cushioning support.
A soft padding of foam and cloth is provided on the ‘Indoli’ so that it does not hurt the
person using the device.
The indoli is being used traditionally for carrying load on head is well, hence the users
don’t hesitate using this over their head.

This is a manual brick making machine, which has mechanized the process of molding,
removing excess mud and press (for compaction) resulting in enhanced productivity. The
device has been designed in such a way that apart from reducing the drudgery, it can also
increase the productivity to almost three times the conventional method.
50 bricks can be made at a time, employing a team of six persons, 8,000-10,000 bricks
can be made in a day (8 h).

Innovator has developed a bicycle -powered horse shaver in which the power of the
bicycle rotary drive is transferred via speed cable to the clippers to cut the hair. Two people
are required to operate it. One person pedals the cycle in standing mode, while the rotary
action of the wheel is transmitted to the hand blade unit of the shaver.
The major parts of bicycle powered horse shaver include the shaving head, the speed

Improved iron cutter is a very useful device, which can incisively cut iron multi-
directionally. Iron materials such as pipe, rods, sheet etc can be cut with his iron cutter.
Four kinds of motion can be obtained from this cutter viz. forward and backward, up and
down, right and left, and for cutting at an angle the cutter can be rotated on its vertical axis.
The cutting range varies from one inch to eight inch; flat sheets of iron of any length can be
cut using this cutter. This iron cutter is similar to angle cutting band sawing machine.
Hacksaw has been replaced by toothed cutter and can rotate about its vertical axis, which
is perpendicular to the plane of the ground.

mostly in golden ink. Conventional letter press technology is tedious and time
consuming, it involves that letters be placed correctly in the dye, heated and then pressed

PROBLEM ADDRESSEDConventionally plastic bags are used to grow the plant saplings. Plastic bags are not bio-
degradable, having nil porosity, and hence not eco-friendly. Moreover, after germination, the
bag has to be torn off to facilitate root growth and in case the bag is not torn properly the plant
gets damaged. Innovator has developed eco-friendly pot by using cow dung and agriculture
waste, which is completely biodegradable. The innovation lies in the idea and achieving
optimum combination of mixers of cow dung and other natural binders used to make it sturdy

Poultry raking machine is an electric machine used for turning/disturbing the layers from
bottom to top of poultry wastes accumulated in the farm.
The user holds the machine from the handle. The electric motor provides power to the

1:34. The motor gives traction for propelling the machine forward. The racking is achieved
by the wheels having lugs and blade.

available in the market are very expensive and run on electricity. But in rural areas, there

The incubator is made up of plywood in the exterior and plain sheet in the interior. Its wall is
about 10 cm thick and thermocole is used to insulate it. The whole device is divided into two
chambers, upper and lower. The upper chamber houses the main component of the
incubator i.e. the egg tray and source of humidity, while the lower chamber houses the
thermal source, a speaker for alarm in case of abrupt change and switches. Innovator uses
electric lamp as the source of heat when current is available and in case of power failure a
kerosene lamp. Both the light and the lamp heat up the floor of the upper chamber (ceiling of
the lower chamber). There is a regulator (same as one used for fan) by which the intensity of
light can be altered. This chamber partition is made up of two plain sheets, so the heat can
easily be transferred. For warming, a plate is placed below the egg tray. From the tray water
gets evaporated due to heat and makes the chamber warm. In this incubator air is fed by
tubes from four holes from the bottom to the upper chamber.

In 2008, the innovator sowed a paddy variety Pusa 1460 in his field but due to sheath
blight disease the entire field was severely affected except one plant. The plant was
harvested separately and transplanted in next year and again selected 225 plants, based
on more number of tillers, lengthy spikes and free from foot-rot disease. Selection
continued for another two years and found the desirable characteristics.

In 2004, Late Sri Chinnar and other farmer (Smt. Pushpam) had cultivated ADT-46 variety.
During weeding, he identified certain plants with a purple colour, good tillering and fine
grains. He had adopted selection method for development of variety.
It takes 110 to 115 days to mature.

The plants are unique with purple pigmented leaf and culm so removing weed is easy.

Shri Rathor had developed this variety through mass selection method. He collected
initial material from ICPL-87 variety during the year 1997. Noticing the feature, the
innovator harvested the plant separately and sown in next year. He continued selection
high yielding for three crop seasons thereby standardizing the technique and multiplying
seeds to a sufficient number by 2000.
Can be harvested twice a year.
Average yield 24 Qtls per acre per year.
Length of the pod is 3.0 – 4.0 inches
Pigeon pea grows well in warm tropical & subtropical climate. The crop would grow

The farmers (Kir community) of Med village are growing this variety for last 30 years and
have adopted a criteria of selecting of big sized fruits. They leave the round gourd fruits of
selected vines after maturity (maturity time is about 60-70 days) and until proper drying of
fruits. The seeds are allowed to be dried completely (less than 10 % moisture) before
storage in jute bags.
This variety is high yielding as compare to other local varieties.

In 1999, Shri Sharma noticed an apple seedling in his courtyard. In 2001, fruits grew on the
tree. As a farmer he could sense that this apple tree bearing fruits in a warm area. Next
year he took some branches and grafted them on a plum tree. Grafting was successful
and the fruit quality was good. He created a mini orchard of apple trees which are
continuing to bear fruits till date.
It grows at low altitude at 1800 ft. above sea level & does not require chilling weather.
Yield is 1 qtl per plant (12-13 year old).

The variety Pepper Thekken is a natural mutant of Piper nigerum (black pepper), identified
in the forest area of Kanchiyar in Kattappana Panchayath, Idukki District Kerala by Shri T.T.
Thomas and has been grafted with Piper colubrinum.
Panicles are branched.
The spikes are fully branched.
One spike has about 60-80 branches.
Each spike bears about 800-1000 berries.

The variety Arjun was developed from Mysore type of cardamom through selection
method. In 1998 the innovator identified a plant tolerant to pests, bearing bigger sized
capsules and robust tillers. He selected capsules from the plant and sown the seeds and
continue selection till 2004. The desirable characteristics of the variety were found stable
in the year 2008.
On average the capsules are 10 mm length and 7-8 mm in width.
Capsule oval shape and pale green color.
High recovery rate (Dry 20-25 %).
Annual Rainfall of 1,500–4,000mm and temperature of 10°–35°C. Optimum altitude
required for plant growth is 600–1,500 m above sea level.

Elarajan was an outcome of natural selection from mysore vazuka. He collected bold
capsules and planted around 500 seeds. Out of these five plants had shown vigorous
growth and lengthy with more panicles. He observed further and selected single plant
from these five and propagated by suckers. It took five years to stabilize the
characteristics of high yielding cardamom variety.
Uniform extra bold capsules of 8-9 mm (80-90 %) with high yield.
The capsules of this variety are by far the most popular cardamom variety Njallani as
well as the released variety ICRI-5.

In 1997, innovator identified a plant with long panicle, more number of capsules and ovoid
shape (Njallani) Vazhukka type cardamom plants in his field. He harvested the capsules

In 1981, Shri Thomman brought some nutmeg kernels from his grandfather‘s farm. In
1984, with the intention to develop a big size nutmeg, he selected the biggest kernels. In
1985, fifty kernels were sown and further selected the biggest size nutmeg kernels and
sown next year. Ultimately he got the variety bearing extra large size in the year 1994.
Thereafter he started multiplying the variety through budding.
