STORY #1 Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago. Capone wasn't famous for anything heroic. He was notorious for enmeshing the windy city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder. Capone had a lawyer nicknamed "Easy Eddie." He was Capone's lawyer for a good reason. To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well. Not only was the money big, but Eddie got special dividends as well. For instance, he and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the conveniences of the day. The estate was so large that it filled an entire Chicago city block. Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little consideration to the atrocities that went on around him. Eddie did have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved dearly. Eddie saw to it that his young son had clothes, cars, and a good education. Nothing was withheld. Price was no object. And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried to teach him right from wrong.

Today I have people in my life that I love. With each passing day, we lose people that we care about. We don't get to keep people with us forever, anymore than we get the option of prolonging our own lives. They come and they go through the revolving doors of our lives. If we are very smart - we will cherish them while we've still got them.

November has become our month to recognize and be thankful for all the GOOD in our lives. So we have compiled a few blessings to share with you. And as this month of Thanksgiving fades into our Christmas "month", let us attempt to be truly grateful for not only our lives, but also for the people we get to share them with.

An open letter to my children; you’re NOT that great...

I love you each. You’re funny. And talented. But as I sit in this dance recital I am holding a foster baby that is in our home for the weekend witnessing an American atrocity that I want you to remember. In the row ahead of me a family has taken hot pink duct tape and marked off 22 seats. We were specifically told not to do this at the informational meeting. Please, always follow the rules. They count off “New-naw, Pawpaw, Auntie Laurie, Auntie Bitsy, Carl-baby, Daddy, Bubba, Unkie-Mikie, Hankie…” These nicknames, while odd are also not the issue, but don’t nickname me when I am old. It’s getting embarrassing. The two women marking off seats are oblivious to everyone around them. “ Unkie-Mikey” just entered the auditorium with an enormous balloon bouquet. I am able to quickly conclude that they are the family of the infamous Kkyylliiee on page 3 of the recital program. She has a full page ad. She’s 5. The dead giveaway is that all of them have on pink t-shirts that say “We hope you dance KKyylliiee“. Don’t ruin songs for people by making silly t-shirts with the lyrics. The ad has Kkyylliiee in her recital

costume in a professional portrait for the occasion. I am over the moon to see this chubby kindergartener perform, if only I could see over the balloons – and the camera equipment they are now setting up. Obviously Kkyylliiee must be quite talented and very special because she needed two of every letter to spell her name. As someone whose name has been missing an “e” in my spelling her entire life, I covet her vowels. Dear Mary, John, Luke, Sophie, Sam and any others we may have the privilege of raising, you will love your children like nothing you can fathom. Name them wisely – otherwise they will never have a personalized pencil from the museum gift shops on field trips. Kkyylliiee enters with another “Auntie” and two suitcases so that “Maw-Maw” can do her makeup. “ Nee-naw” brings McDonald’s for the whole clan. I can’t help but remember the sign outside clearly stated “NO FOOD OR DRINK.”

Again I say – just follow the rules. Yes, they apply to you. I can’t stop watching the insanity and as I compose this in my head – I make a mental note to myself to write this to you… My dear Americanized children you aren’t above the rules and you aren’t that great.

GOOD FOOD

"Hi, my name is Christy Jordan and I like to feed people."

1. Place sweet potato filling ingredients into large mixing bowl and beat with electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Spread into bottom of 8x8 baking dish and set aside.

2. Place all custard ingredients into medium heavy sauce pot and stir well. Place over medium low heat, whisking constantly, for five minutes, or until just warm. It will be very runny.

3. Using a measuring cup, gently scoop and pour custard over sweet potatoes.

4. Place 8x8 baking dish in center of larger baking dish and pour water into larger dish until it is about an inch deep.

Instructions

Sweet Potato Creme Brûlée

I bake my sweet potatoes a day or so ahead of time and stick in the fridge. Doing it that way, the skin just pulls right off easily and sweet potatoes that are baked in the oven, in their skins, have more flavor than when you peel and slice them and cook them in water.

5. Bake at 325° for 1 hour or until knife inserted in center comes out almost clean. Carefully remove from oven and remove baking dish from water. Allow to cool by placing on a heavy dish towel or wire rack. Once cool, cover with foil and refrigerate for several hours, or overnight. Before serving, remove from fridge and allow to sit at room temperature for half an hour. Sprinkle brown sugar over top and turn oven to low broil.

6. Place dish on a baking sheet and put in oven about 5 inches from broiler, for 5-7 minutes, or until sugar is mostly melted. Remove from oven and allow to sit for a few minutes before serving to allow sugar to harden. Note: Not all sugar will melt, but it will form a thin coat across the top of the dish.

I make this a day ahead and just sprinkle the topping on and put it under the broiler just before serving.

Ingredients For Sweet Potatoes:

•2 large sweet potatoes, baked at 425 for one hour, or until soft and completely cooled.

•½ cup sugar or splenda•¼ cup margarine or butter, melted

•½ teaspoon cinnamon•2 eggs

For Custard:

•2 cups whipping cream (sometimes labeled Heavy Cream, no substitutes)

•½ cup white sugar•4 large egg yolks (save whites for a meringue

on a Thanksgiving pie!)•1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Topping:

•1/3 cup brown sugar

1. Countdown- Make it an event!

My Mama says my favorite part of Christmas growing up was the countdown to Christmas. The first day of December Mama would get out a red crayon and let me make a big “x” over the date on the calendar. I can still remember the anticipation building as the marks got closer to Christmas.

You don’t have to buy an expensive advent calendar although there are plenty of them available , an ordinary calendar works just fine.

2. Decorate!

My grandmother lived alone after Grandaddy passed away and even though anyone seldom went into her house (she lived across the road from my mother and spent her days at Mama’s house so that is where she always was when we came to visit) she still put her tree up every year.

She said, "Someone told me once there wasn’t no sense in putting it up if there wasn’t anyone there to enjoy it. But I’m here and I sure do enjoy it." Even if it is just

And stop with the excuses – it doesn’t have to be expensive. A package of construction paper can be bought for a few dollars and will provide a house full of decorations. Add a bottle of glue and $2 of glitter and you’ve expanded it even more.

Also, don’t worry about when you put your tree up. Put your tree up whenever you feel like putting your tree up. For us that is often November 1st! The ironic thing about people who complain about folks putting a tree up before Thanksgiving is that they themselves are choosing to avoid being thankful and instead spend their time complaining about something that does not even take place in their home.

I’ve never once found my gratitude dampened when sitting in a room with Christmas lights. If you feel inclined to put a Christmas tree up in July, don’t take a poll of opinions first, just do it.

Fun Ideas:

•My sister in law’s family had a tradition when they were little that the first night the tree was up the kids slept in sleeping bags in the living room around it. I can only imagine how magical that was!

•Mama’s favorite new thing that she has started doing is putting a timer on her tree so that when she wakes up the tree is all lit up. She even does that on a small tabletop

3. Give Crazy Gifts

Over the years we’ve made quite the tradition out of crazy gifts. My brother once gave a girlfriend an old boat propeller. My dad (a police officer) once mounted several small branches to wood bases and tied a string to a bullet to hang in them and then presented folks with “A cartridge in a bare tree”.

For a sentimental touch, you could have an empty box wrapped with a note inside that says something like “I give you the gift of Christmas Spirit…I love you.”

From Mama: One of my most memorable Christmas’s was when my Uncle played a trick on my mother. She was always so crazy about Christmas and loved opening gifts. He bought some little something (I can’t even remember what) and wrapped it over and over. He put it in a small box, wrapped it and put it into a little larger box and wrapped it and then put that into another box and so on until he had a gigantic box. It was so much fun to watch her unwrap it and try to guess who gave it to her since he did not put his name on it.

4. Make a Christmas ornament with your child’s picture on it and date it.

It is so much fun to look back at how they looked every year when you are hanging up the ornaments. I can’t tell you how much I treasure these! Sometimes I make them from scratch, but often I just buy a ready made ornament and use a paint pen to write the date on it.

5. Give a Little ChristmasIf you know of someone young or old who may not be able to put up a tree, buy a small table top one and decorate it and drop it by for them. It is not the size, but just knowing that someone was thinking of you.

6. Host a Dirty Santa!

Mama says “One year we had a Dirty Santa exchange for our stitch group and the requirement was that you had to bring something from your sewing room. No buying something special. It was really a lot of fun to see all the gadgets that people had bought and never really used.”

We used to do Dirty Santa in our church group a lot back in my younger, unmarried days. One year, I wrapped a big package of toilet paper and people actually fought over who got to keep that one!

7. Read a special Christmas story to a child.

At Christmas, my grandmother would always read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" to Mama and her sister. She still has that original book that her mother read to them and it is one of her most prized possessions.

This being our first Christmas homeschooling, Katy and I are working together to memorize The Night Before Christmas. We are also doing special Christmas studies in with our homeschool work and reading the first book of an Advent Storybook series called Jotham’s Journey. The book description states: “In this widely popular, exciting story for the advent season, readers follow ten-year-old Jotham across Israel as he searches for his family. Though he faces thieves, robbers, and kidnappers, Jotham also encounters the wise men, shepherds, and innkeepers until at last he finds his way to the Savior born in Bethlehem.”

I’ve already peeked at a few passages and know we are going to be on the edge of our seats each evening! There are three other books in this series (so far) so we can choose a different one each year.

8. Make as many gifts as possible.

There are all kinds of ways to make a gift, the options are endless. Embroidered handkerchiefs, stitch tote bags, bake cookies and bread. Want bigger gifts? My sister in law makes up baskets of bread, spiced nuts, jams, and jellies she has made throughout the year. You could even can barbecue sauce to include. Round it out with some dish towels and wooden spoons from the dollar store.

Dealing with a “money” person? Many of us have people in our lives who don’t consider “made” gifts to be gifts, but make it clear to us that they expect a store bought gift instead. We’ve all been there! Here is a thought: Maybe if we quit trying to live up to their expectations, we’d be happier and less stressed and they’d learn not to have those expectations when it comes to us :).

A family recipe cookbook would make an excellent gift. Print off some of your family’s favorite recipes and assemble them in a small book. It doesn’t have to be a grand production, 10 recipes stapled together with a cover page works just fine. Be sure and include notes with each recipe stating who it is from, the recipe origins, or any funny stories that might relate to the recipe.

9. Make Christmas Ornaments

When we were little we made all manner of homemade ornaments. We’d color pictures and cut them out to be ornaments. We’d save pot pie tins and glue cut outs of christmas cards we’d received in the center, then surround them with cotton balls to make a snow scene ornament. Continued on page 34.

Thou shalt not kill - it doesn't matter what the age is. It doesn't matter what the reason is. All that matters is that we acknowledge that abortion is wrong. It's murder and God said don't do it. However this, just like anything else can be forgiven if we repent (which means feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one's wrongdoing or sin). But before we can repent - we have to first be able to acknowledge that it's wrong.

“In the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Matthew 7:2).

Many people use this verse to silence people who do not agree with their choices. You may not feel that abortion is wrong and that is your right. I won't have to answer for your beliefs and you won't have to answer for mine, but there are consequences for every choice we make. If we refuse to call anything a sin, we cannot possibly repent or be forgiven.

We are teaching our kids that everything is acceptable these days... so in truth - that may be our greatest sin - causing others to stumble. We don't admit to doing anything wrong anymore. Many people act like they are double daring you to say anything about any of their choices. So we don't say anything and in doing so - we make every behavior (right or wrong) acceptable.

I believe in a merciful God, but I don't think He is a pushover. I think He is a God of justice and that He wants us to repent for our sins just like the book says. I think He means business.

How else could He explain to the child who was never born, why He forgave it's mother?

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend.. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway and cars costing more than her house.

The first day and evening went well and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's employer was quite generous as a host and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely.

As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment.

Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny.

He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?

Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She casually mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value.

A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?

'Look at it.' He said. 'Read what it says.' She read the words 'United States of America'.

'No, not that; read further.'

'One cent?'

'No, keep reading.' 'In God we Trust?'

'Yes!'

'And?'

'And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him?

Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment.

I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him.

For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!

When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change.

I read the words, 'In God We Trust,' and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message. It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful! And, God is patient...

I am not sorry if you felt less than your peers because I forgot to turn in the form for you to be highlighted in a program. As much as it hurts me – feel less than. Esteem not yourself. Feel lonely. Feel unworthy. Feel unaccomplished. Feel small. Feel lost. Feel broken. Feel least. For if you believe you are greater than, your father and I have failed miserably. Among the broken you will find Christ. My prayer for you is that you see Him everywhere. There’s nowhere to go but down if we as a society continue to treat mediocrity as mighty. If you are never uncomfortable, weary, left out and un-praised how will you recognize the desolate? And if you are never desolate how will you recognize how much you need a Savior? I will continue to put pictures of you on Facebook and brag about you. I will still cut the crust off your sandwiches – and bring you Sonic slushes for no reason. It is my mommy nature – but I pray I never make you feel you are more than those around you. My prayer for you is that you came to serve, not be served. Ah, and most importantly I pray you are wise enough to recognize the broken among the esteemed. We well-meaning and proud parents have created the monsters. You have to see the tragedy of the poor and the crack addicted; the baby who may never have a recital portrait taken or her name in lights. And it is sad. But it is also sad to learn too late that you aren’t that great. The last shall be first – the first shall be last. All this to be said… Sophie, I forgot flowers for you after the recital. You did a really good job, but don’t quit school to pursue a career in dance baby girl. I wasn’t lying to any of you when I said I was proud of your C- paper. If you tried – If you cared and that is how you were graded – bravo! Work hard, be willing to get dirty, give away your lunch or your last dollar, sit with the lonely, stand up for injustice, follow the rules, and walk through the fire… you’re doing just fine.

Eddie wanted his son to be a better man than he was. Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there were two things he couldn't give his son; he couldn't pass on a good name or a good example. He decided he would go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al "Scarface" Capone, clean up his tarnished name and offer his son some semblance of integrity. To do this, he would have to testify against "The Mob", and he knew that the cost would be great. So, he testified. Within the year, Easy Eddie's life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely Chicago street. But in his eyes, he had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer, at the greatest price he could ever pay. Police removed from his pockets a rosary, a crucifix, a religious medallion, and a poem clipped from a magazine. The poem read:

The clock of life is wound but once and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour. Now is the only time you own. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in time. For the clock may soon be still.

STORY #2 World War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant Commander Butch O'Hare. He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific. One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank. He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly, he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet. As he was returning to the mother ship, he saw something that turned his blood cold; a squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding its way toward the American fleet. The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but defenseless. He couldn't reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger. There was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert them from the fleet. Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 caliber's blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another. Butch wove in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent.

Undaunted, he continued the assault. He dove at the planes, trying to clip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible, rendering them unfit to fly. Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction. Deeply relieved, Butch O'Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier. Upon arrival, he reported in and related the event surrounding his return. The film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale. It showed the extent of Butch's daring attempt to protect his fleet. He had, in fact, destroyed five enemy aircraft. This took place on February 20, 1942 and for that action Butch became the Navy's first ACE of W.W.II, and the first Naval Aviator to win the Medal of Honor. A year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29. His home town would not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade and today, O'Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this great man. So, the next time you find yourself at O'Hare International, give some thought to visiting Butch's memorial displaying his statue and his Medal of Honor. It's located between Terminals 1 and 2. So what do these two stories have to do with each other?Butch O'Hare was "Easy Eddie's" son.

LibriVox FREE Public Domain Audio Books

A GOOD IDEA

LibriVox is a site that sets out to make digital audio recordings of every existing public domain book and offer them FREE to the world on the net.

The site, founded by Montreal-based writer and web developer Hugh McGuire, recruited 13 people to this crusade in the week it launched back in 2005. Together, the 14 read and recorded Joseph Conrad’s Secret Agent.

The group, which now has 6,600 contributors, has since gone on to complete 8200 works, with 600 in progress, in 35 languages.

McGuire’s idea was to make the audio equivalent of Project Gutenberg, the non-profit volunteer

effort to digitise and archive as many free e-books in as many languages as possible, that Michael Hart launched in 1971. Gutenberg, set out to do for literary appreciation in the digital age what public libraries did in the 19th century, has now completed 45,000 books.

The texts, poetry, short stories, plays, novels that are featured on LibriVox have all been read aloud by volunteers, who record the works in chunks of about a chapter, or about 20 minutes of audio each.

The outfit is vehemently egalitarian- ‘We accept all volunteers in all languages,’ runs its blurb. ‘With all kinds of accents, you’re welcome to

volunteer to read in any language you speak, as long as you can make yourself understood in it. You don’t need to audition, we’ll accept you no matter what you sound like.’

Volunteers use free software and any old rudimentary audio equipment they have to hand to do their recording: the variations in sound quality are more than made up for in the enthusiasm and intimacy of their readings.

‘It’s a more personal experience,’ says McGuire, ‘it feels like someone’s reading to you rather than a professional packaged thing.’

The files are hosted on Internet Archive as MP3 and OGGs.

Pick one - you can't serve both. You can't love and hate at the same time, one will always overpower the other eventually. Although things can be both good and bad at the same time. Example: a car wreck is never good when it happens, but getting a new car out of it can be awesome!

Or perhaps you get cancer. That is never good when you find out about it, but if through the crisis you learn to live like you're dying; that is a very good thing! I have gotten off track here though. My point was - you can choose to have a good attitude or a bad attitude on any given day, at any given time. You will either lean into peace, joy, beauty and all that is good or you will slide down the slippery slope of worry, hate, depression and all that is bad. We always get to choose who becomes the master of our attitude.

It's not a matter of positive thinking; it's a matter of choosing which master you will serve. Everyone gets the chance to choose, every day, all day long. Bad thoughts come to all of us, no one is immune. Some of us live in bad places in our minds for days, weeks, months or sometimes even for entire lifetimes. When Shirley MacLaine said she's "just been in a bad mood for 40 years" as Weezer in Steel Magnolias, we laughed because we all know people who are just that way.

The point is we get to choose from moment to moment who we serve. I may not live in a mansion or drive a Bentley, but I live in a really nice place. All of our REAL living takes place in our minds, not in our physical space. That's why people can be happy in a hospital, on the highway or in a hammock. It doesn't matter, those are just places, we don't live there.

This year's Christmas Tree Lighting will take place at the Mae S. Bruce Library immediately following the annual Christmas Parade, which will end there. A new event is scheduled to take place this year in Tombrella Park, called? You guessed it I'm sure... Christmas in the Park. All 3 events happen on Saturday, December 12th from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM.

The parade will begin at R.J. Wollam Elementary and will end at Santa Fe Jr. High. It is scheduled to begin around 5PM. Santa Claus will be the Grand Marshal. Continued from page 14. We traced our hands onto construction paper and cut that out. We made paper chains and tied bows onto candy canes and did little pipe cleaner bead crafts. Anything we could think of was made into an ornament and put on our tree – and they were beautiful.

10. Bake cookies together.

When I was little, we always made special cookies for Christmas. This was the first thing I did with my own family. Brady was only 6 months old on his first Christmas, but I rolled out that dough and had Ricky hold him up on the counter. I’d put a cookie cutter on it and use his little hand to gently press down to cut it out. He had no idea what he was doing, but he laughed every time we removed the cookie cutter to reveal a new shape!

Over the years, after seeing how much my in laws enjoy decorating cookies with us, we now have a tradition of making these cookies on Christmas Eve and the whole family sits down to a table filled with cookies, icings of all colors, and sprinkles. It’s one of our traditions we look forward to the most!

11. Drive around and look at lights.

The lights! The lights! I love Christmas lights. Set aside a night each week to drive around looking

for them. Many communities have an entire area that is absolutely awash in lights. Ask around and then go adventuring. Be sure and listen to Christmas music while you do. Your family will never forget these evenings!

12. Visit family or invite family to visit you!

Several years back my mother in law mentioned that Christmas morning was a little dreary for them. All of the family celebrations had been had and it was just the two of them waking up with not a lot to do. We started having them come over (they live in another state) a day or so before Christmas to visit for a spell and it’s a win win! Now my kids get to have grandparents here Christmas morning to watch them open presents, we all decorate cookies together Christmas Eve, and just have a fun and relaxed house full of family to celebrate the season.

13. Go to a Christmas parade!

There are several towns near us who host wonderful Christmas parades, some of them are even held at night with all of the floats lit up with lights! There are so many free events to help put you in the Christmas spirit that I’ve mentioned and this is another one to add to your “not to miss” list!

14. String the lights in your own yard.

One of our greatest joys is putting lights up in our yard!

It is always so magical to come home to find everything all lit up, especially after an evening of driving around to see other Christmas lights and then to turn in and see one of our favorite displays :).

We buy our lights after the season on sale and stick with LED’s to save on electrical costs. We don’t do as many now as we used to due to difficulty of putting them up where we live (our older, smaller house was so easy!) but back in the old days (before LED) we had so many lights that our bill was $100 more a month!

15. Print out Christmas coloring pages for your kids and hang the finished ones up around your house.

I’ve found some fantastic Christmas coloring pages online. Your kids will be so proud when you hang up their artwork I’ve posted some beautiful vintage coloring pages to my Great Big Christmas Board on Pinterest and they are free to print. Click here to visit that board and be sure you follow me if you do!

16. Decorate a doorway with cards you’ve received, or even a small tree.

Mama used to tape the cards we received around a door frame in our home for a beautiful decoration. A lot of folks aren’t sending Christmas cards anymore (see below), but I have a door frame complete with a Poinsettia and Pine swag up at the top just waiting for Christmas Cards to arrive!

17. Send Christmas Cards

I know this is one that has fallen to the wayside due to the expense, but there is something so special about getting Christmas cards in the mail. They don’t have to be expensive. You can buy a box at a discount or even dollar store. Each year cutting this expense is tempting but so far I have managed to keep it up, but I am going with cheaper cards this year. I purchased some beautiful Dayspring ones with a glitter embellished snow scene on the front for just $5 for 18. Of course, adding the stamp adds nearly 50 cents so I hand deliver all of them that I can and mail the rest.

18. Go To Church

Many churches have special Christmas programs that are amazing! Check the ones in your area now and put the events on your calendar! Our church has the most beautiful Christmas Eve service.

If you are a Christian and celebrate Christmas as the birth of Jesus, act like it. Go to church. Have a nativity in your home. Celebrate Advent. If these are new holidays to you as a Christian, there is no shame in that! This is our first year celebrating Advent and I am grateful for

all of the inspiration and research available online as I incorporate this new (to us) tradition.

19. Go Simpler

I saw a wonderful idea in doing my research for this post from a blogger who keeps Christmas simple by giving her children three gifts, to represent the three gifts the wise men brought baby Jesus.

20. Have a party!

A Christmas party doesn’t have to be expensive. Invite friends, have everyone bring a dish, and don’t even worry about the house. Clean it up a bit and then just fill it with people. No one will be able to see the mess for the crowd.

21. Watch Christmas Movies

I have so many favorites and the holidays just aren’t the same without watching them again! My favorites are : Meet Me In St. Louis and It’s A Wonderful Life along with White Christmas. As a family, we always have to watch The Toy That Saved Christmas (Oooh! A Buzzsaw Louie!) and all of the old claymation Christmas movies from my childhood.

•Take this up a notch by making a big bowl of popcorn and make popcorn garlands together as you watch.

22. Take your family to the nursing home and visit folks who don’t normally get visitors.

You have no idea what a difference this will make in their lives. I’ve seen gifts as simple as a smile, a hug, and a Christmas card bring tears to someone's eyes and help everyone understand the true meaning of Christmas.

23. Play Christmas Music

24. Wear Christmas Sweaters

I know this has become a big fashion no no, but I’ve found that the majority of people who sit around coming up with fashion no no’s should probably spend more time being thankful and decorating for Christmas ;). I love Christmas and I love wearing Christmas sweaters!!! Bring on the sequins, embroidery, and beautiful colors. Don't just stick your toe in the water, dive in!

25. Bake a Cake …or Seven :)

My great grandmother made Christmas special for her kids without any money or wrapped gifts.

Life during the depression in rural Alabama wasn’t too different from any other time of year for my people. You see, they were sharecroppers – dirt farmers who didn’t even own their own dirt. They wouldn’t have known if the world had been prosperous, their lives had always been a struggle of hard work and all too often relying on hope for the next meal.

This time of year, there wasn’t a whole lot to be thankful for, other than the fact that there wasn’t any cotton to pick. For them, winter was as bleak as the Alabama landscape. In Alabama, we are not often afforded the sight of glistening snow resting atop hills and trees in a winter wonderland. Here, the sky just gets gray and the landscape browns – bare trees, brown grass, and muddy earth where fields lay in wait for spring . . . as far as the eye can see.

My great grandmother had four children and they all lived in a small shack house. Wood was a precious thing and that meant only heating one room. My grandmamma says “it got so cold at night. Mama would heat rocks and wrap ‘em up in old towels and things to put in bed with us, but we still got so cold. You didn’t dare get out of that bed unless you just had to”.

Families would work all year for the farmer in exchange for monthly rations of staples such as dried beans, flour, and the occasional bit of meat. At harvest’s end they’d get a percentage of profits on the cotton, but all of the staples which had been provided for them were then deducted from the final cost, leaving families in a continued state of dependence upon the farm owner for enough food to survive the winter.

But with winter, came Christmas, and my great grandmother always did manage to make it special despite their hardships. Lela’s life had always been a hard one. Growing up one of nine children in Jackson County,

she had spent her childhood traveling from farm to farm with her parents and siblings, picking cotton and tending to whatever crops the farm owner decided to plant. Now she had four kids to provide a Christmas for and keeping them fed and clothed took about all she had and then some.

But she never failed them. She always came through, especially at Christmastime.

Lela squirreled away ingredients all year long. A little sugar here, some dried apples there, maybe some raisins and a bit of cinnamon. After the kids went to bed on Christmas Eve, she’d set to work. Using only what she had on hand and no recipes to speak of, Lela would stay awake all night baking cakes in her little wood stove. She’d make an apple stack cake, a raisin cake, yellow cake with chocolate icing, peanut butter cake, and so on. There was never a plan beyond that of needing to make seven of them – one for each day from Christmas until the New Year.

The next morning, four sets of eyes would open wide and four sets of feet would hurry out of their cold beds into the only heated room in the house where their faces would light up at seeing the bounty of seven cakes sitting on the worn kitchen table. I know how their faces looked because my grandmother’s still lights up the same way now, some seventy years later, when she talks about those cakes. The kids took turns being the one to choose the cake they ate that day and between the six of them and any company who happened by, they made short work of it and were ready to start with a new one the next morning.

Most kids today would consider having cakes baked for you as your only Christmas gift to be a disappointment. But amid all of the wrappings and bows, gift sets and feasts, I hope your Christmas somehow manages to be as magical as it was in that little sharecroppers house in Alabama during the depression, when four kids woke up with stars in their eyes at finding seven cakes.

Let me start by admitting that we've been to Sakura 4 times before getting this Foodie column done. Why? Because we keep going back for more! These crab puffs don't look much different than other crab puffs... but they are different. They are delicious and the dipping sauce is not necessary, but it's excellent too!

And they make some of the most beautiful plates we've ever seen. Everything is meticulously placed and perfectly seasoned. Their BEST SELLER, the Shaggy Dog is scrumptious! The Beef Bento Box comes with a clear soup that has more flavor than most people can get in a chunky soup. The fried rice in the box is much better than you can get at most places as well. And then we found something even better... it's called a Lobster roll, but it's got real Snow crab in it and it's great!

Their sauces (if that's what you call them) are so tasty, you want to ask for a bowl of it to eat with a spoon!

We tried the raw New Orleans roll because we're Cajun (we like rice) and so we could say we did it. It was good, but to be honest... come on, we live in Santa Fe - it was a little too fishy for us. The sauce was excellent though and it was beautiful! (See below.)

If you like GOOD food, love to try new things and want to patronize family owned places... this is a GREAT place to go. If you are tired of the same old places, this place is a nice treat.
