How does it feel to be thankful? When we are thankful to someone or something, we are compelled to give back – to show our appreciation. As Christians, we believe that everything we have – each blessing in our lives - is a gift from God. Giving out of thankfulness and love for God is stewardship – giving back in response to the gifts we have received. We give in gratitude to God for the blessings we see and feel each day.

At St. James, we have much for which to be thankful. We are blessed with many generous individuals, those who give time, treasure, and talent back to our parish and the Armenian Church. We have you, our parishioners, whose participation in our community of faith contributes to our vitality. They worked tirelessly through difficult times to build our church, and they didn’t give up hope. The generation after them carried on that legacy with the growth of our parish and the development of a large and vibrant parish community. We are thankful for the legacy that has been left for us.

I, as your Pastor, am personally thankful for many things in our parish. I am thankful for our youth. One of my favorite things to do is to spend time with the children when they are at church. I enjoy hearing their thoughts and questions. Listening to them explore their faith brings me great joy. I am thankful for the opportunity to worship together. There is a place for everyone at St. James. During Holy Communion, our congregation truly becomes one body in Christ, and I am particularly filled with emotion when we sing the Hayr Mer during Divine Liturgy. Sometimes I take a moment to stop and hear voices of all ages singing in unison – it is a beautiful moment for me as your pastor. I am especially grateful that you allow me to be a part of your sacraments and the important moments of your life. It is an honor for me to share in your happy celebrations, as well as

to mourn and grieve with you in your sad ones. It is inspiring to see the joy in a parent’s eyes when I lift a child out of the baptismal waters during a christening. Each of our parishioners is a special member of our church family, and what helps make our St. James parish so unique and beautiful. Your presence makes a difference to me and to our parish.

In this season of Thanksgiving, I invite you all to enter more deeply into the life of this parish, and to share with us in celebrating God’s blessings in our lives. I encourage each of our parishioners to become a dues-paid member and contribute to our Annual Appeal – no amount is too small. Your contribution makes a difference. Please also take the time to learn more about our Church and your faith, and support our church’s activities. I also encourage you to share your prayer requests, request a home blessing, or come and visit during the week. Help us fulfill our mission to increase our ministries, programs and activities to strengthen our St. James family for generations to come.

TAKUHE GHUGASIAN MEMORIAL AWARD Dr. Vartan Ghugasian and Armen Ghugasian recently established a $25,000 endowment fund for our Sunday School in memory of their beloved mother Takuhe Seferian Ghugasian. Prior to the construction of St. James Armenian Church, Takuhe attended Sunday School at The Good Shepherd Episcopal Church at Dexter Hall in Watertown. In 1935, the St. James Sunday School opened and Takuhe was one of its earliest students. With the interest income from their endowment fund, the Ghugasian family established the “Takuhe Ghugasian Memorial Award” as a wonderful and lasting legacy to honor her memory. This Sunday School scholarship award, in the amount of $500, will be given annually to a girl who has graduated from St. James’ Sunday School and exhibits excellence in Bible studies. This permanent fund is a lovely way to contribute to the ministry of St. James Sunday School while honoring their mother Takuhe. We are grateful to the Ghugasian family for their kindness and generosity.

ST. JAMES 69TH ANNUAL BAZAARCongratulations to all of our St. James parishioners for an extremely successful 69th Annual St. James Bazaar, which took place on October 14th and 15th! Thank you to our 2016 Bazaar Co-Chairs Thomas, Peter and Vasken Babigian, and the countless organizations and volunteers who worked together in enthusiastic support of our church to organize and plan a wonderful, enjoyable and exciting weekend!

This year’s bazaar featured our traditional favorites, including the $100

Raffle, Silent Auction, Sunday School Bake Sale Booth, and Attic Treasures. New this year was our Super Raffle booth with over 50 prizes! This all could not have been possible without the dedication and devotion of all our parishioners, who lovingly came together for our church.

Whether you stopped by for dinner with your family, supported our vendors, arrived early on a hot summer morning to prepare manti, carefully sorted attic treasures for display, grilled

the kebab, sold raffle tickets, or helped out in countless other ways large and small - we thank you.

We extend sincere thanks to all who volunteered and worked for months to prepare for the bazaar! Thank you also to the St. James Church Office Staff and Facilities Staff. Finally, thank you to all parishioners and friends for attending! Thank you to all and congratulations!

Here’s to next year as we look forward to our 70th Annual Bazaar!

Sincere thanks to our Sponsors and Donors for their generosity in supporting this year’s Bazaar

HOLY LAND

MY EXPERIENCE

A ugust 30, 2016 – The day I returned home from a year-long travel spree overseas and realized I was no longer the same person I was before I left. After traveling through 20 countries in 5 continents, I chose to conclude my travels with a long-time bucket-list

dream; a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. I wasn’t sure what to expect on this trip. Some experiences were fun and educational, while others were emotional, like walking in the footsteps of Our Lord who sacrificed His life for me, standing in the Jordan River, breaking bread with my St. James family in the garden of

Gethsemane, and quietly singing the hymn “Our Es Mayr Im” at Golgotha. These experiences were all surreal, but it’s also the unexpected ones that made this pilgrimage so unforgettable.

My journey started a bit rough when I missed my scheduled flight to meet the group in Jerusalem, and felt even worse when I realized I was going to miss site visits and activities with the group! On our first free day, I decided to visit the sites I had missed; and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of the trip! This day went far beyond where I went or what I saw, as spiritual and enlightening as they all were; it fulfilled a need I didn’t know I had; a new bond and friendship

with three incredible women who so generously volunteered to accompany me to revisit the sites they had already seen, as I wasn’t permitted to go alone.

We walked down the Palm Sunday path while singing hymns, prayed where Jesus wept over the city of Jerusalem, rode a camel and posed with a donkey, drank freshly squeezed pomegranate juice, and met quite the fascinating people along the way. We bonded over life stories, we laughed and we cried, and made memories that would last us a lifetime. I believe one of God’s plans for me was to bring these beautiful souls into my life in a way that otherwise would never have happened had I not missed that flight. I needed them, and He knew that long before I did. This is what they call “a blessing in disguise!”

This pilgrimage came at a point in my life where, after all I had experienced in my life, I was challenging my own faith; the faith with which I was raised, that was engrained in my very being since I can remember. Much of the trip was filled with questions, self-reflection and countless prayers; even ironic prayers to help me find the strength to believe as I once had. What was God’s purpose for me, and why hadn’t I figure it out yet? I had to make a decision. I was either going to continue fighting it, trying to figure it all out on my own, or find a little bit of faith, trust it, and trust that God would never steer me astray in finding my truth in life and always be there when I needed Him. I chose the latter, and it all came rushing back; the script that had helped me through a difficult time years ago kept resounding in my mind, “I am the way, the truth and the life.”

I believe God put me here for a reason, and my job is to use the gifts He gave me to serve that purpose. Perhaps it’s that simple; to keep working at it and trust in it, until our purpose reveals itself to us. My experience in the Holy Land inspired me to commit myself to keep working on finding that truth, and let Him be my strength. And in case I fall into doubt again, I marked myself with a customized “haji” as a symbol and reminder of that commitment. I am thankful to Fr. Arakel and the entire St. James family for helping me as I walk the path of my life’s journey. God Bless us all.

Sunday SproutsOur St. James Sunday Sprouts is off to a wonderful start for the 2016-2017 year! The children enjoy time together on Sunday mornings playing, making crafts and artwork, singing, and sharing story and music time. They also love going to church for a few minutes – they are fascinated by the music, the stained glass, and most of all everything that is happening at the Holy Altar. So far this year they have learned that God loves them and God made the world. The children are fun and loving, and are thriving in the Sunday Sprouts environment – which is always safe, loving and centered in our faith.

We are fortunate to have Reena Panian as our director, and to have Mary Cimen (our longtime volunteer) and our new volunteer Lori Shirinian with us on Sundays. Yn. Natasha continues to serve as advisor to the program. The Sunday Sprouts room is always happy and exciting and a wonderful place to be. Sprouts is for children between the ages of 2 years old and 5 years old (turning 5 after September 1, 2016). If you have any questions or are interested in the Sunday Sprouts program, please email [email protected].

Marsha Alabachian, who has devoted herself thoroughly for 17 years to the role of Superintendent, decided to pass the torch this year to Laura Purutyan, formerly Assistant

Superintendent. Laura is no stranger to our Sunday School, having served as both a past teacher and parent. The Sunday School community has thrived and many programs have grown under Marsha’s creative and passionate leadership. While she has decided to take time for her immediate family, “Mrs. Marsha” still continues to share her love, energy, wisdom and experience with her Sunday School family. We thank her for her years of service, and we welcome Laura to her new role! We know our Sunday School is in capable and loving hands.

On November 6, parishioners filled the Charles Mosesian Cultural and Youth Center’s Keljik Hall for a special fellowship

hour honoring “Mrs. Marsha.” The day’s program featured reflections on Marsha’s decades of service to our school, having served 17 years as Superintendent and an additional 20 years as a teacher. Reflections were offered by teacher and past Superintendent Edward Brewster, Tanya Cherkerzian, who was a student of Marsha’s and is now a Sunday School parent, and recent graduate and Assistant Teacher Ben Bresnee. A slideshow highlighting Marsha’s time in our Sunday School, prepared by Cheryl Keane, brought memories to life. Mrs. Marsha’s brother and sister also lovingly provided their thoughts the way only siblings can. It was a memorable afternoon celebrating Mrs. Marsha and her special way of always being, as our speakers highlighted, “patient, loving, and kind.”

The St. James Sunday School bounced back on September 11 with a wonderful Homecoming Sunday! Our team of teachers welcomed back students with plans to build faith through friendship,

worship, learning and service to others. Following opening day of class, we attended Divine Liturgy and the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Our Welcome Back Party was a

high energy day with Bounce Houses, the Hungry Hippo and a floor to ceiling slide! The Superbowl tailgate theme featured home-made guacamole, sausage and peppers, fresh popcorn and more! The extravaganza was generously planned and carried out by the Carson and Dorian families alongside many Sunday School parent volunteers.

BOUNCING INTO SUNDAY SCHOOL

Our Sunday School booth at the St. James bazaar was a popular destination for all ages. The 2016 designer cupcake table run by Laura Bresnee and friends was an even bigger hit, selling 200% more

cupcakes than prior years. And the variety of scrumptious baked goods exceeded last year’s success. Thank you to our Sunday School students of all ages and their parents for supporting our booth through donations and many volunteer hours! The Sunday School Room Parents initiative was

launched this year to promote a stronger bridge between church and home. Room Parents will serve primarily as communication liaison, and work

together with teachers and families to help support the school, and bring our families together as a learning community. Room Parent Coordinator Jeniffer Carson and our team of parents have been working with Superintendent Laura Purutyan and our Sunday School administration throughout the fall season. We are excited by this new initiative and look forward to working together. We continue to work together to bring special assemblies, new initiatives, and exciting experiences for our students and families. The Sunday School is really after just one thing: helping one another overcome and thrive through faith, day by day. We look forward to joining with our students and families and helping to grow in faith together.

HOURY GEBESHIAN VISITS SCHOOL We enjoyed a special visit this October from Houry Gebeshian, the first female gymnast to represent Armenia at the Olympic Games. Houry gave a fascinating presentation to our junior classes about her journey to the Olympics, and how her Armenian roots helped her achieve her dream of becoming an Olympic athlete. The informative and inspirational presentation led to the students asking lots of questions, and sharing their own sport experiences. Houry also visited the intermediate classes, and talked to the students about the importance of perseverance and dedication to one’s dreams. Students listened eagerly and asked questions. They enjoyed sharing their own Armenian experience in the greater Boston area. Houry generously stayed through the afternoon for a social hour with the school’s parents. We enjoyed hosting Houry Gebeshian for this special visit. Words of pride and gratitude were expressed to her throughout the visit. She promised to be back for a future visit, and we are looking forward to hosting her again in near future.

ANNUAL HALLOWEEN PARTYAnother highlight of our fall season was our annual Halloween Party, which was a great success. The students were so excited to dress up and see their friends in costumes. We had princesses, action heroes, scary costumes, pumpkins and little animals. The hall was transformed with festive decorations, while children and families enjoyed activities, games, music, and our traditional costume parade. Thank you to our school parents for preparing the delicious pasta dinner and dessert. With each passing year, this special Halloween Night becomes more and more anticipated and enjoyed. It’s great to see so many happy children dancing, jumping and having fun. We hope you will all join us again next year!

The members are: Anais Astarjian (Chair), Christine Karakouzian (Vice Chair), Emma Kaloostian (Secretary), Shant DerTorossian (Treasurer), and Tatiana Nalbandian (Programming Coordinator). We welcomed many new members this year as they graduated high school transitioned from ACYOA Juniors to the Seniors.

We continue to be involved in mentoring the ACYOA Juniors, serving as chaperones and coaches at ACYOA Junior Sports Weekend in October. On November 3rd, many of us happily participated in Gabriel’s Day of Kindness, and on November 4th,

we sponsored a meal and served a volunteer shift at the Friday Night Supper Program soup kitchen in Boston. We worked together to help serve a hot meal to the evening’s guests, bussed tables, and cleaned up the hall. It was a fulfilling experience and we look forward to more service opportunities this year.

We are looking forward to the next few months as we plan our activities. We plan to gather on Thanksgiving weekend to reconnect with all of our members who have been away at school. And once again, we are excited to host our New Year’s Eve celebration for the entire parish – we hope to see you there!

WOMEN’S GUILD

September 25th marked our Kickoff for the year with over 50 members feasting on a delicious chicken and pilaf dinner and dessert followed by a demonstration of Armenian string cheese making by our own favorite expert cheese maker, Caroline Soultanian. She was entertaining as well as informative as she pulled and twisted the cheese to perfections. Several volunteers came up to try their “pulling” skills!

Members have been busy since early August making manti, porov kufte, choereg, simit, tahin bread, paklava, khadeif, apricot squares and more to sell at our pastry table at the bazaar.

Don’t forget our Christmas Party, Thursday, December 15th, which once again will feature “Gabriel’s Season of Giving” where we will make gifts bags for Children’s Hospital and for homeless shelters.

We have also received a new shipment of our famous cookbook; St. James Family Table: Hrametzek and matching aprons. Available at the bookstore, office and on our website www.stjameswatertown.org Buy for yourself and gifts for the holidays.

As always new members are welcome! Come, visit, enjoy the company of a dynamic group of women.

Nancy Kassabian

Much appreciation goes to our most senior member, 102-year-old Mrs. Mari Vartanian, who spent many hours lovingly volunteering for our Bazaar preparations.

Page 19: GRATITUDE TO GOD TOGETHER - Watertown, MA...ՈՅՍ ՐԱԻՐ ՁՄԵՌ 1WINTER 2016 ՁՄԵՌ How does it feel to be thankful? When we are thankful to someone or something, we are compelled

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for volunteering on so many levels to help make our Women’s Guild booth at the Bazaar a smashing, sell-out success. Whether you came once or multiple times your “extra set of hands” made the work lighter (and more fun!) Many hands made for lighter, faster work and the results were outstanding! Our booth was extensive and impressive and we received many compliments on the variety and quality.

Thank you to those who helped man the table those two days and helped set up and clean. Thank you to those ladies who pinched and rolled and

formed the manti, choereg and yalanchi! Thank you to those who buttered the paklava, rolled the bourma, rolled and formed the nazook, simit and the tahin hatz, help make the apricot and apple squares, made the boeregs and the khadeif. To those who helped make the porov kufte thank you and since we have a newer (easier) method of making the kufte I hope to have more of you next year to help! The tourshi was out of this world and thank you to the Toorshi Team!! Thank you to those who were not able to help but purchased our goods!

God bless each and every one of you!

A NOTE OF THANKSDear Women’s Guild Members and friends,

With love and much admiration to the women of St. James Women’s Guild,Nancy Kassabian, Chair

BAPTISMS AND CHRISMATIONSAll baptisms must be scheduled at least two months in advance by calling the church office.
