COUNTERTOPSTo put it simply, nobody wants laminate or tile countertops in their kitchen. Granite, marble, quartz, soapstone and even wood are much better op-tions. Kitchen countertops matter so much that they are often mentioned in real estate listings. Replacing your countertops isn’t a quick fix, but it is one that has a lot of value.
CABINETSCabinets are everywhere you look in a kitchen. They tell a big story. If your cabinets are lacking hardware, the story they tell is “budget”. If your cabinets are stained wood, the story they tell is “old”. Lighter colored cabinets, especially white, are most desired these days. In fact, the popular home design website Houzz took a survey of 7,812 homeowners and found that white or off-white was preferred by 73%. It’s a clean look and lighter colors will make a room seem larger, which is a bonus. Adding a pop of color is also gaining popularity, but it’s important not to go overboard. Blue cabinets under the kitchen island will look fun and current. An all-blue kitchen might just look funny. Having your maple cabinets painted white is a job that can be done in a day or two and can take years off the age of your kitchen.
BACKSPLASHA short backsplash or one that is made of the same material as the countertops will scream “ten years ago”. For a more custom look, opt for a tile backsplash, being careful not to get overly specific or decorative with the design. Simple is best. For the most polished look, be sure to extend the tiles all the way up to where the cabinets begin. A new backsplash can be installed in one day can even be a do-it-yourself job.
CLUTTERThis is an easy fix that might not require hiring a professional to accomplish. If your microwave is sitting on the counter, have it mounted. If you have pots and pans dangling from an overhead rack, take them down. A little trick is to ask a friend what the first thing he/she notices when walking into your kitchen and then ask yourself if what’s mentioned is enhancing the value of the space. If it’s not, then you might want to consider eliminating it. The options are endless when it comes to ways to freshen up your home. Whether you are interested in reselling or just want to enjoy a new look, beginning with the kitchen is a great idea.

There’s no denying that the heartbeat of any house is the kitchen. It’s what makes a house a home. Any Realtor, and anyone who has ever been in the market for a home can tell you that the condition of the kitchen is one of the things that potential buyers care about the most. If you’re
considering selling your house in this upcoming year, you might also want to consider sprucing up your kitchen. If an entire remodel is too daunting to take on, there are some small updates that can make a big difference. What are the most tell-tale signs of an aging kitchen? Obviously, the appliances are the first things that most people notice and of course stainless is king these days. But a savvy buyer will realize that installing more updated appliances is not very time consuming and can be done without breaking the bank. Some might even prefer to choose their own in order to get exactly what they want. There are other improvements that can be made that will hold more value to the average buyer. To determine if your kitchen is as “sellable” as it could be, take a look at the following:

Grayhawk is the new Hollywood! Ten-year-old Angelina and eight-year-old
Caroline are already veteran commercial and film actors, having worked in Phoenix and Los Angeles for more than two years now in. Both girls got their start when, as a completely inexperienced actor in 2011, Angelina submitted for and booked a role in the film “Trigger”. Caroline came along for the ride, and ended up being cast as an extra.
Since this early fortunate break, both have stayed incredibly busy juggling show business while also being active members of the community. Both girls are in the Gifted & Talented program at Grayhawk Elementary
School and have been involved with everything from Student Council to the school choir. They even make time in their busy schedules to attend all of their favorite GCA events each year.
This past June, Angelina flew from a family vacation in Kansas City to Los Angeles, to make it to a 5 a.m. call time in Malibu for her role as the child Marilyn Monroe in the film “BOMBSHELL.” Angelina’s reward for the long hours and hard work was attending her
first film premiere this past September, when “BOMBSHELL” had a limited run at Los Angeles’ Landmark Theatre.
Caroline was also working in Malibu recently, shooting a ROSS Dress For Less commercial. Caroline also plays the role of a little girl ghost who lets loose an evil spirit in the hospital in “The Linda Vista Project,” a feature film set in Los Angeles that is scheduled to be released in 2014. Soon she will get to go to her first premiere as well!
Phoenix also has been good to The Mann Girls, as they sometimes call themselves. They recently worked together on “Car Dogs,” a
comedy shot in Phoenix the past two months. Angelina was also featured in a Valley Honda Dealers commercial earlier this year. But her biggest role to date will take place when she begins filming her lead role as child assassin“107” in the independent feature film “107Juliet,” which is scheduled to begin filming in Phoenix in 2014.
Even though they have had a lucky break here and there, the Mann Girls have put in a great deal of time and hard work that includes training at Dearing Acting Studio. It’s a long
process of answering many casting notices and auditioning along with dozens of other little girls fighting for the same role to finally get the opportunity to be on set. All this can mean staying in various hotels throughout the Los Angeles area, as well as other locations far from Grayhawk. There are often pre-dawn call times and more than eight hours on set a day. But it’s worth it. They love it. And at the end of the day, the best part is that they get to come home – to Grayhawk!
THE MANN GIRLS
The Grayhawk Community Association never fails to plan exciting events for residents of all ages to enjoy and 2014 will be no
exception. Many of the traditional events that we’ve all come to love (Pumpkin Patch, Easter Egg Hunt, Daddy/Daughter Dance, Santa Party…) will be back better than ever and there are going to some new additions to shake things up a bit. Speaking of new additions, Justin Martin has recently taken over the role of Lifestyle Director. Justin has his work cut out for him because Jennifer Sheets did such a great job during the years that she held that position. Jenn hasn’t left us though. She’s just wearing a different hat now as Director of Communications.
Justin comes to Grayhawk straight from Las Vegas where he worked for two other CCMS communities, both of which were awarded the title of “Best Community in Nevada” by the Nevada chapter of Community Associations Institute. So we really are lucky to have him with us now. He brings with him some fresh ideas and plans to add more age-specific events to the calendar as well as additional off-premise trips. There really will be something for everyone. Sports fans will be happy to know that a partnership with the Phoenix Suns will enable residents to purchase tickets to games at a great price. And art lovers can look forward to a planned Tupac Festival of the Arts outing.
The new year will get kicked off with Ladies Night at Phil’s Grill on January 14 and then a new event that is sure to be a huge hit—a community Scavenger Hunt that will take place January 20-25. Mark your calendars for it even if you don’t plan to participate because it will be fun to watch our neighbors running all around Grayhawk competing with one another! Some other events to watch out for in coming months are Sushi & Sake night at Pure, Cork & Canvas night in the GCA Raptor Room and…wait for it…CASINO NIGHT at Grayhawk Golf Club! There’s never been a better time to live in Grayhawk. Now we just need to figure out how to make time for it all!
