She was raised by her step-father at the age of 2. Her step-father was an Ojibwa First Nation Indian. She was the second oldest of five children and was raised with very little money, even peanut butter would be a luxury.

Her mother Sharon would encourage Eilleen singing. Eilleen would sing in clubs with her parents beside her which would give them much needed cash.

When Eilleen was 21 she worked in Toronto as a secretary and sang at local clubs. In November, 1987 tragedy struck her family. Her parents died in a head on collision and she moved back to Timmins to take care of her siblings.

She moved her sibling from Timmins to Huntsville. She there started to work as a carbaret singer in Deerhurst Resort. That is where she got her first break.

“I wanted to learn how to write songs like her; I felt the music that she wrote. She's such an emotional singer.” Shania Twain told Oprah about her childhood hero.

In 1991 she changed her name from Eilleen to Shania. She took the name from one of her friends as well as it is an Objiway name meaning I am on my way..

She was now known as

She released her debut album in 1993.

In 1993 Robert “Mutt” Lange told Shania he would produce and write songs with her. After many conversations they finally meet in June at the Nashville Fan Fair.

They married in December 28, 1993.

November 18, 2005 Shania received the order of Canada.

In 2003 She was inducted to The Canada’s Hall of Fame.

“This is Canadian not a music award” Shania said after she received the order of Canada.

Shania is suppose to be inducted to The Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.

Since 1998, Shania has supported Breakfast for Learning and child nutrition across Canada. Her first contribution was all the proceeds from her song God Bless This Child would go to child nutrition and BFL. Shania still supports these two organizations. She also donates some of the proceeds from every concert to organizations that feed hungry children.

Her first world concert tour was in 1998 after her after releasing her album Come on Over.

Every city that she performs in Shania has a child (they auditioned) sing on stage with her. They sing the song What made you say that? And the reason “it’s the first song I recorded and the one that gave me my break.”

Shania took time off in 1999. She stayed in her home in Switzerland. She said in many interviews she liked Switzerland because it reminded her of Canada and the people wouldn’t treat her like a star. She would get privacy.

She had a boy in 2001 and named him Eja

She returned at the end of 2002. Her Album Up was 2 cd’s one a country version the other a pop version. Her tour Up was the top grossing tour of 2004.

The town Shania Twain grew up in dedicated a Center called the Shania Twain Center which was opened in June 30, 2001.

Shania Twain wrote a letter when she couldn’t attend the opening in Timmins she tries to be considerate of her fans and her home town.

She has never forgotten her roots and is proud to share it with the world. She also is into helping feed children before going to school. In many interviews she will speak of Canada very highly. She states that she loves Canada and frequently comes to visit. She lives her life how she thinks she should live it.

Shania Twain is a truly Canadian historical figure because she represents Canada well.
