DatesUnless otherwise indicated, all year numbers are

given in the Túzyn Reckoning (tr) or Before Túzyn Reckoning (bt). This system was originally devised by the Mèlderýni astronomer Túzyn during the second century TR, and is now the most widespread dating system across the region. The current date is the 1st of Núzyael tr720.

Pronunciation anD accentsThe acute accent (e.g. á) indicates primary stress on

the syllable. A grave accent (e.g. è) indicates secondary stress.

A circumflex accent (e.g. â) indicates the vowel should be pronounced as if it were followed by an r. This accent may replace the accent indicating primary or secondary stress. If such an accented vowel is explicitly followed by an r, it should be read either as a ‘double r’ and rolled slightly, or indicates a compound word, where the previous ending r has been lost. Sometimes it should be rolled even if there is no following r.

An å sounds like the vowel in the English word law; ø is pronounced like the vowel in the English word boat, but more rounded.

A y, when used as a vowel, sounds like the vowel in the English word beet.

The dh digraph represents the voiced dental fricative edh, the consonant at the beginning of the English word them. The th digraph is the unvoiced dental fricative thorn, and is pronounced as at the start of the English word thin.

Great Clans of emélrenè

Emélan nobility are relatively stratified, into ‘high’ noble clans (âkúla), ‘middle’ noble clans (mélkula) and ‘minor’ clans (tékula). The âkula include the royal clan and the eight clans holding duchies and earldoms. The mélkula include all clans holding baronies, while all other land-holding noble clans are tékula.

Âkúla (Great Noble) ClansThe great clans (âkúla) of Emélrenè in tr720 are:• Edhélen, the Royal Clan, also holding the duchy

of Jerinál and the earldom of Edûr• Tarénas, holding the duchy of Cháronès and the

Émhlèn-aína-Âr (Sibling Clans)Each of the noble clans of Emélrenè is associated

with one or more ‘sibling’ clans of the free Eméla or Émhlè.

The following are the Émhlèn-aína of the âkula clans of Emélrenè:• Emélyn, Edûras and Edhályn are all aína of

clan Edhélen (the royal clan).• Kýthlir and Állynar are aína of clan Keir (Earls

of Malád).• Quirinállyn are aína of clan Quirínas (Earls of

Negáros).• Parállyn are aína of clan Parthánè (Earls of

Kíbler).• Pallawéllys and Kyllárn are aína of clan Panîr

(Earls of Módan).• Ésallarn and Shennârl are aína of clan Tarénas

(Dukes of Cháronès, Earls of Úlamà).• Hyallým are aína of clan Thâbel (Earls of Nyan).• Taemáryl and Quanádryll are aína of clan

Tiemel (Earls of Quándas).• Tráhllyn are aína of clan Trahúne (Earls of

Émane).

Mélkula (Baronial) ClansThere are twenty-two mélkula clans; that is clans

holding baronies (ésuârd). There are more than twenty-two baronies in Emélrenè, but many are held by the great noble clans.

The most influential of these baronial clans are the Hocht, the barons of Léidras. They are the only baro-nial tenants-in-chief, and sit at the boundary between the âkula and mélkula clans.

Each of these clans also has one or more émhlèn-aína clans amongst the Émhlè.

Tékula (Minor Noble) ClansThere are several hundred tékula clans in Emélrenè,

principally holding manorial estates, but also other roles such as that of constable (élgâr) for the greater clans. Clan Váladar are the chancellors of Edûr for the royal clan, and are the most influential of the tékula clans.

Tékula clans can be associated with their own Émhlè sibling clans or with the sibling clans of their lieges.


2 Emélrenè Clans


Târpan na emélrenè

(kingDom of emélrenè: clan eDhélen)

Edhélen are the royal clan of Emélrenè. They also hold the Duchy of Jerinál and the Earldom of Edûr in addition to the Crown of Emélrenè. These fiefs are detailed separately below.

Queen Yólanda has ruled Emélrenè since tr684, and is the eleventh ruler of the Edhélen dynasty. See venârivè: northwestern Lýthia for a full list of the rulers of Emélrenè.

The Royal Domain of the Kingdom of Emélrenè includes seven freetowns, four castles, six keeps, several other sites, and 273 manors. The total population of the Royal Domain is 194,300.

The seat of the Royal Domain and ‘capital’ of the Kingdom of Emélrenè is Beréma City.

The freetowns of Emélrenè, which hold charters from the Crown, are:• Beréma (population 21,000), Market Size 7,

with 12 associated manors.• Âlwin (population 17,000), Market Size 5,

with 13 associated manors.• Máxîr (population 8,200), Market Size 4,

with 33 associated manors.• Ráleth (population 7,300), Market Size 4,

with 9 associated manors.• Áregan (population 7,000), Market Size 4,

with 18 associated manors.• Malád (population 6,400), Market Size 4,

with 9 associated manors.• Déserid (population 6,200), Market Size 4,

The kingdom is divided into seven shires (îrdiúla), each held on behalf of the crown by a sheriff:• Álgram Shire, with the shire seat and moot

at Nalíse Castle (22 manors). Jénaf Keep (13 manors) is held by a constable for the crown.

• Âlwìna Shire, with the shire seat and moot at Kádigen Keep (17 manors).

• Beréma Shire, with the shire seat and moot at Alímus Castle. Lánison Keep (10 manors) is held by a constable for the crown.

• Fándàlon Shire, with the shire seat and moot at Lyns Keep (10 manors).

• Malád Shire, with the shire seat and moot at Felédir Keep (12 manors). Kîrgèna Keep (9 manors) by a constable for the crown.

• Quándas Shire, with the shire seat and moot at Détule Castle (15 manors).

• Úlamà Shire, with the shire seat and moot at Sónau Castle (12 manors).

The remainder of the kingdom falls within the Jerinália March, which is governed by the Duke of Jerinál and the Dhéria-Ísvan.

Vassals

The Crown of Emélrenè has eleven tenants-in-chief: two duchies, eight earldoms, and one baronial tenant-in-chief (the Baron of Léidras and Lipyl).

ensign anD shielD of the kingDom

This shield is born by the Royal Guard and as a badge by other royal soldiers and officials. It is the badge of the kingdom as opposed to the royal clan, and predates clan Edhélen’s rule by centuries.

Téldôr na Jerinál

(Duchy of Jerinál: clan eDhélen)Anávras al Edhélen is the Duke of Jerinál. He is

the Queen’s nephew, and is the designated heir to the throne of Emélrenè. The duchy was created in tr635 for Párelan Edhélen, the brother of King Pethrás V, the Queen’s grandfather. It was granted to Anávras in tr698 when Párelan’s son died without an available heir.

(Duchy of cháronès: clan tarénas) Saelýna alrí Tarénas is the Duchess of Cháronès

and the Earl of Úlamà. Clan Tarénas were elevated to ducal rank in tr639 following the treason and fall of the previous earls of Cháronès, clan Neláfis, in tr638.

Ârren alrí Thâbel is the Earl of Nyan. The Earl’s sister Celíkre is married to the Duke of Jerinál, and both Ârren and his sister were raised in the royal household after they were orphaned in tr694. The Thâbel of Emélrenè are a junior branch of the ancient Mèlderýni clan of the same name.

Lódhroth alrí Keir is the Earl of Malád, and is one of the most powerful nobles in the realm, related by blood to most of the great clans of the kingdom. He is known (behind his back) as the ‘Mad Earl’, and is prone to wild, unpredicatable, behaviour. He has a poor rela-tionship with his six children, including his heir, Cáled.

Málnîren na Quándas

Ârdoth alrí Tíemel is the Earl of Quándas, and despite his advanced age (he is nearly eighty), he is still vigorous. He has outlived three wives and two of his three sons. His third son has been missing for decades, and thus his heir is his twenty-three year old grandson, Jémis.

Séhar alrí Quirínas is the Earl of Negáros, is an engergetic man of sixty. He has poor luck in his family life, with both his wife and son showing signs of mad-ness. Séhar has petitioned the Queen to recognise his illegitimate son, Rítzar al Félgrir, as his heir. Rítzar is a master in the Pilots’ Guild and a gifted Shèk-Pvâr.

Géldar alrí Panîr is the Earl of Módan. Clan Panîr are a large and very ancient clan, claiming to have held their lands since the founding of the kingdom.

As well as the main branch of the clan, there are several sub-branches, including branches holding the baronies of Mîrod and Fôrin in their own right.

Élbaroth alrí Parthánè is the Earl of Kíbler, and at twenty-two is the kingdom’s most eligible batchelor. He is close to his aína clan, Parállyn, and has considered taking the Freedom. Should he do so, his fief and titles would pass to his younger sister, Sárela, who is only fifteen.

Lister alrí Trahúne is the Earl of Émane. Clan Trahúne are an ancient clan, whom legend states swore fealty to Dákarion I, ‘The Founder’ of Emélrenè. The current earl is a member of serveral arcane socieities in the kingdom. His sister is married to Rickár alrí Firliyan, the Pálithàner Earl of Pálganir, while a second cousin is the Chancellor of Târkáin.

Sir Fénsas alrí Váladar is the Ôron (Chancellor) of the Earldom of Edûr for the Crown. Edûr is the ances-tral holding of clan Edhélen, but has been governed by a chancellor since the creation of the Duchy of Jerinál in tr635. The last three chancellors have been from clan Váladar, and Sir Fénsas hopes to be granted the earldom in his own right upon the accession of the cur-rent Duke of Jerinál.

Rickár alrí Hocht is the Baron of Léidras and Lipyl. While technically the clan are mélkula, their connections to both the royal clans of Emélrenè and Mèlderýn mean their status is rising fast. Rickár was a page in the royal court of Mèlderýn, and is married to King Chunél Tôron’s eldest daughter, Thaéklia.

RICKÁR ALRÍ HOCHT

Dhéria-ísvan

(heaD of the coVenant of the eméla)

The Dhéria-Ísvan is the spiritual leader of all of the Eméla people, including those living beyond the borders of Emélrenè itself. The Dhéria-Ísvan is elected for life, and takes the title as their name from that point forward.

The Dhéria-Ísvan is not only the leader of the Emélan Cult of the Convenant, but also the leader of the Free Eméla or Émhlè. The various aína clans that dwell across Emélrenè look to the Dhéria-Ísvan for leadership.

The Dhéria-Ísvan holds the ancient fortress / abbey of Ábrelyn high in the Jerinálian Mountains. The fortress of Kwánys is held by the Émhlè clan Émelyn, under the oversight of the Dhéria-Ísvan.

Émhlè RangesEach of these two ancients sites have oversight of a

number of ‘ranges’ across Emélrenè. Around 32,700 Émhlè live in these various ranges, including around 5,300 ‘semi-settled’ Émhlè.

• Ábrelyn Fortress / Abbey and range are overseen by the Dhéria-Ísvan.

• Ámelyrè range - overseen by clan Kyllám (aína of clan Panîr).

• Belgârys range - overseen by clan Tráhllyn (aína of clan Trahúne).

• Eshálosha range - overseen by clan Rhýddyn (aína of clan Rhýddyn). Within this range is a shrine of the Order of the Oldest Ones.

• Eshánlys range - overseen by clan Pallawéllys (aína of clan Panîr). This range includes the Ilvîran cultic site of Kêrvagor, headquarters of the Order of the Pool of Kêrvagor.

• Lagýnan range - overseen by clan Kýthlir (aína of clan Keir).

• Mârnasèrn range - overseen by clan Súdhrem (aína of clan Sútrec).

• Meléshârys range - overseen by clan Taemáryl (aína of clan Tíemel).

• Nalámêrn range - overseen by clan Parállyn (aína of clan Kíbler).

• Sílmyrè range - overseen by clan Edhályn (aína of clan Edhélen). This range includes a shrine of the Order of the Breath of the Ancients.

• Kwánys Fortress and range is overseen by clan Émelyn (aína of clan Edhélen).

• Kwánys Abbey, near Kwánys fortress, is the headquarters of the Ilvîran Order of the High Deep.

• Ahéthallyn range - overseen by clan Maéllynn (aína to clan Máell).

• Charlýndras range - overseen by clan Allýnaèor (aína to clan Alénoic).

• Daymârdin range - overseen by clan Hóthyr (aína to clan Hocht).

• Fándhalyn range - overseen by clan Quirinállyn (aína to clan Quirínas).

• Gaményn range - overseen by clan Walléndym (aína to clan Lángwyn).

Emélrenè is the oldest feudal realm in Venârivè (Northwestern Lýythia). The kingdom’s noble houses can trace their ancestry back generations, and claim links to the founder of the realm.
