After the awful winter we had, we’ve been rewarded with a

pretty good spring and summer. The summer weekends

have been almost perfect, not even one major heat wave to

endure. Courses have held up really well, conditions among the

best I can remember. And now it’s almost Fall, my favorite season

of the year. Cooler temps, a new grass growing season which will

give us the best conditions of the year. Sweet! Lots of

tournaments for me, many opportunities for you to experience new courses. Check out

this issue of GREAT GOLF and enjoy our favorite game.

Our featured course is Makefield Highlands Golf club in Yardley, PA., an

immediate success since it opened 10 years ago. A great location near New Hope, a top

notch championship course designed by Rick Jacobson, with an award winning range

with expert PGA pros. Everyone also enjoys the great food and drink at the Highlands

Bar and Grille. Be sure to put Makefield Highlands on your schedule.

THE ROSE FACTOR reviews 2014, with updates on the status of many local

courses, highlights those in the running for Player of the Year, and lists a ton of great

shots and Holes-in-One. I’ll also look ahead to 2015, with some national events coming

to our area.

Lastly, I hope you’ve enjoyed my golf reports and “Pick the Winner” contests on

975 The Fanatic and at www.975thefanatic.com. Record number of entrants this year,

hopefully more next year including you!! And lots to look ahead to in 2015 with the

20th anniversary of GREAT GOLF. Thanks again for your support.

See you on the tour.

GREAT GOLF - DELAWARE VALLEY 2014 ISSUE 326

By Mike Rose

State of the Game – Update

Despite excellent weather this year, rounds of golf are flat to slightly downin 2014. The game continues to suffer with kids not taking up the gamedue to other options, golfers leaving the game because it’s too hard, and

slow play making the game too long. The powers that be are working on answersto all of the above, like 15 inch cups, new and fun programs to bring more kids tothe game. Wouldn’t it be nice if golfers played continuous putting, were ready toplay when it is their turn, etc.

Good news and bad to report on the status of many clubs that aresuffering. Edgmont CC, in bankruptcy earlier this year, is out of it and back inbusiness, doing better than ever. But like other clubs, could still use moremembers. Torresdale-Frankford got a huge influx of cash as the Union Leaguejoined with them to add value to their over 1000 members. I talked to local golfarchitect Stephen Kay and his team are already working on a new range, with atee and bunker program on the horizon. This classic Donald Ross course shouldbe back to top form next year. The venerable Atlantic City Country Club, over100 years old and where the term “birdie” was coined, was sold byCaesar’s/Harrah’s to the Ottinger family, owners of Scotland Run and Ballamor. Not sure what their plans are yet, but I hope they lower their greens fees, way toohigh.

On a negative note, it looks like Meadowbrook GC in Phoenixville willbe closing in October, with the local school district using “eminent domain” topurchase the land and build a new school. Bad luck for the Campbell-Youngfamily that has owned the course for over 75 years. Philmont CC was looking todo some big capital improvements thanks to a deal with Toll Bros. to buy 9 holeson their South Course. That deal is no longer happening, Toll has backed out.

Players of the YearWith only a few events left to be played, most of the Player of the Year

titles were sewn up as of Labor Day. In the Juniors, Cole Berman of Phila.Cricket Club is your winner, thanks to his strong play in junior events plus a 5thplace finish in GAP’s amateur rankings thanks to his win at the prestigiousPatterson Cup. Cole should continue his rise as he heads off to college. Congratsto Blaine Lafferty of Burlington who finished 2nd in the junior race.

No surprise in the senior division, as Chip Lutz of LedgeRock is runningaway with POY honors for the 5th consecutive time. He won the Warner Cup, andplayed well in GAP majors and around the world, low amateur again in the BritishSenior Open. In the Super Seniors, the race will go down to the wire with

Del Val GGM 2014 Issue 3_88928 Delaware Valley 8/28/2014 1:02 PM Page 26

GREAT GOLF - DELAWARE VALLEY2014 ISSUE 3 27

defending champ Don Donatoni battling it out with Bill Lawler. Don won theBrewer Cup, Bill the Warner Cup. The GAP Senior Championship in September, with the Silver Cross title also at stake, will determine the POY. Hey even thisreporter, winner in 2012, and as lousy as I’ve played this year, is still in the hunt, currently 10th in the rankings but only 1 shot back in the Silver Cross. With theAm at my old home course Philmont, anything could happen. Fingers crossed.

In the always exciting battle for the GAP POY/Hyndman Award, the 2014winner is Temple senior to be and Commonwealth CC member Matthew Teesdale, continuing the Temple run that Brandon Matthews started last year. Matt won theGAP Phila Open, played well in other events and was the only local player tomake match play at the USGA Amateur. Congrats also go to 5 time winnerMichael McDermott who captured his 3rd Mid Am title and Jeff Osberg of HVCCwho won the GAP Amateur title at White Manor. In the Phila. Section PGA, DaveQuinn is your leader in the Haverford Trust POY race, with Rich Steinmetz, DaveMcNabb, Billy Stewart and Stu Ingraham close behind. In the senior division, StuIngraham, again, is well ahead of Brian Kelly. All races will be determined thisfall with September’s PGA Championship at Llanerch and the Match Play title inOctober at Riverton helping to determine the 2014 POY winners.

Major Events Coming to the DEL VALLEY in 2015

The USGA Mid Amateur has just finished up at Saucon Valley, hope youwere able to watch theaction. But if you missedit, don’t fret, 3 of golf’smajor titles will be comingto our region in 2015. Inthe spring, PhiladelphiaCricket Club, and theirclassic and newly renovatedWissahickon course, designed by AW Tillinghast, will host the country’s topclub professionals. Phillyshould be represented by11-15 local pros, allwanting to win the title, or just finish in the top 20, earning them the right to playin next August’s PGA Championship. In June, the world’s best women head toLancaster CC, for the USGA Women’s Open, where Michelle Wie will defend thetitle she won this year at Pinehurst. Lancaster is a William Flynn gem, one of myfavorites. Get your tickets now, they will go fast. And in September, the nation’sbest senior amateurs will go to Hidden Creek GC in Egg Harbor Twp, NJ for theUSGA Men’s Senior AM. Hidden Creek is another beauty from Bill Coore andBen Crenshaw and should test the players with firm, fast conditions. I’ll be tryingto qualify for that one for sure.

LINKS AND LUXURYESN WR67 AND WR72

I road tested the Garmin when it firstcame out and it quickly became my“fifteenth club.” The only time I looked at ayardage marker was to check the accuracyof my Garmin. My only complaint with theGarmin was its short battery life andoccasional loss of connection with thesatellites.

About a year later, I stumbled upon anew, unknown branded GPS watch by acompany named ESN (Express SatelliteNavigation) which made the WR67. TheWR67 claimed to connect to more satellites(67) and provide longer battery life that it’scompetition (which, at that time, was theGarmin). Not only did it connect to thesatellites quickly and stay connectedthroughout the round, there was still 75%

battery life remaingat the end of theround compared toalmost none with theGarmin. The WR67also had features thatthe Garmin did nothave such as theability to set your teetime on the watchwhich will activate

the GPS at that precise time. It also providesyou with the total time your round tookonce you’ve turned off the device at thecompletion of your round.

The course mapping on the WR67 isprovided by iGolf, a company that mapsgolf courses for a number of handhelddistance measuring devices. I was playingLiberty National, in Jersey City, NJ andfound that the distances the WR67 providedme on hole 18 were inaccurate primarilydue to a redesign of the hole. I sent emailsboth to iGolf (who got back to me right

away and provided me with an updatewithin a couple of days) and to Garmin, who never got back to me, for three yearsnow and counting.

Earlier this year, ESN decided to pick itup a few notches by releasing the WR72 (72satellites), a luxury GPS watch designed tobe worn as aneveryday pieceof jewelry. TheWR72 comesin bothpolished andbrushedtitanium withan anti-reflectivecrystal,stainless steelbuttons, leather band from Hadley Roma, and a smooth, curved face. The WR72comes with the same great technology asthe WR67. The only indication that it isused for golf is by the tee flag image on thecasing. Other than that, it makes a rich, classy presentation that I guarantee yourfavorite golfer will be thrilled to wear.

The reason you might never have heardof ESN is due to a licensing agreementbetween Bushnell and ESN who providesthe technology to Bushnell for theirwatches. So, if you already own a Bushnellwatch, you also won an ESN.

The WR67 is available on their website,www.golfesn.com for only $149.99 as is theWR72 which is priced at $249.99 for thepolished titanium model and $269.99 for thebrushed titanium. All three watches comewith a 2 year warranty. They have greatcustomer service and truly value theircustomers. Available at www.golfesn.com.

GREAT GOLF - DELAWARE VALLEY 2014 ISSUE 332

In all my years of teaching I have found the Bunker Shot to be the hardest technique

to teach. As golfers, we are all trying to hit the golf ball with the best possible

contact during practice and play. Now we hit into a greenside bunker and when

executed properly we will contact the sand a minimum of 3 inches behind the golf ball

using a swing that usually hits the shot 50 to 70 yards, that now, because of this

resistance from the sand, only hits it about 30 to 50 feet. That is hard for the average

golfer to accept and commit to and that is why so many don’t.

The best thing we can do to make greenside Bunker Shots more enjoyable is to

understand the design of the Sand Wedge and how it works through the sand, along with

the overall technique of hitting this shot.

When hitting a Bunker Shot you can use any of your wedges, but for this article I

am going to use the standard 56-degree Sand Wedge used by a right-handed golfer.

BOUNCE

The Sand Wedge has Bounce, and Bounce is designed to keep the leading edge of

the club from hitting the sand first, which would create “dig”, something we don’t need

when hitting a bunker shot. (See Photo: Bounce) In effect, when contacting the sand

about 3 inches behind the ball the club will slide underneath the ball pushing the sand

and ball out of the bunker and onto the green. (See Photo: Bounce In Action)

SET-UP

The Bunker Set-Up can get tricky so I have created a real easy way to understand

this set-up position without all the confusion. Determine where you want the ball to

land, this becomes your Line Of Play. Now aim 10 to 15 feet left of your Line Of Play(this is your Swing Line) with a standard address position with the clubface square to

the Swing Line. Now all you have to do is to roll the face open and re-grip the club,

look about 3 inches behind the ball, favor a little more weight onto the forward foot, and

you are ready to swing. (See Photo: Bunker Set-Up)

EXECUTION

Now that you have the proper Set-Up you are ready to make your swing and hit a

beautiful Bunker Shot. Make the size of your swing 3-quarters back and 3-quarters

through with a full wrist hinge in both directions, keeping your arms and hands relaxed,

with grip pressure just firm enough to keep the club from twisting in your hands. Look

3 inches behind the ball and make contact with the sand, accelerating the club through

the sand and into the 3-quarter finish position. (See Photo: Bunker Swing In Action)

Remember, once in your Set-Up position you will be making this swing just like

you are trying to hit the ball along your Swing Line. With the club face in an open

position and contact 3 inches back of the ball, your shot will go to the Line of Play, not

the Swing Line.

In closing, I need to bring up some important statistics about Bunker Play at the

PGA Tour level. In 2005 the best Bunker Player, to successfully get the ball onto the

green and make the putt (up and down), was Pat Perez at 63%. The average Tour Player

gets it up and down just under 50% of the time. Now

that we know these statistics what should we expect

when hitting these greenside bunker shots?

My advice is to get the ball onto the green safely

with good technique, make no more than two putts and

you will be as good as the tour players 50% of the

time, and who knows, maybe more up and downs will

just find their way into your game.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to

read my article and my hope is that you will find some

of this information useful, making your golf game the

best it can be.
