Letter from the President Hello everyone!

From what I have seen so far this ride year has been a real success. Many rides

have had great turnouts and the weather has managed to be its usual

unpredictable and at times down right ornery self. In my experience, the Grand

Island North Ride was a real exception. While it was sweltering in southern

Michigan, where I’m from, it was a refreshing 75 up north. It has been a long time since I’ve

been in the U.P., don’t know why I waited so long. It was a very nice trip. Thanks to everyone

for their hospitality, especially Karen Bahrman.

We had a quick discussion at the Grand Island North BoD’s meeting about publishing the club

roster and it sounds as if all of the pieces are in place so only the information that members

want published, will get published. All we need to do is get consensus on how we would

distribute it, who will format the list and whether we have the consent of the members to do

it. I would expect most of this, with the exception of the vote, will be decided at the next BoD’s

meeting in early November.

Lastly, I’d like to remind the next couple ride managers to please be sure that they make a

special effort to get they’re ride results into Kathy Macki promptly. We have a lot of work to

do to get the awards determined and there is not much time to waste. Right Kathy? Right Lisa?

Hello! I hope everyone has had a fun riding summer! MHC is back from summer hiatus, and the

Executive board has had a lot going on.

The Public Service Announcement has been aired in the Alpena area, with producer Doug Damon contacting stations

throughout Michigan. And it is on You Tube if you want to view it.

There is now a Supervisory board appointed who will direct and help the Expo committee implement plans. Not sure

why.

Apparently West Nile is on an upswing. The recommendation is if you vaccinated before March, you should revaccinate

now. And there are increased reports of strangles in the state. Watch for toxic plants in your pastures, notably black

nightshade and Jimson weed.

MHC has worked to improve the website. There is a new communications person at the helm. To have events put on

the MHC calendar, use the email [email protected].

There is a state vet coming to the October MHC meeting, which is on October 2nd at 7pm at the Pavilion, the speaker is

Dr. James Averill and the topic is Horse Health. All group members are invited as well as delegates.

The Camp Innisfree proposal is still a possibility. This is the partnership of MHC and the DNR buying the old Girl Scout

camp and MHC controlling the acres with buildings and DNR controlling the rest. The DNR would support putting in

equine campsites, and this site could link to Brighton Recreation area. But as with anything involving the DNR, plans

start slow and just get slower. 😉I’ll keep you posted....

A new proposal in the works is a state issued tax on commercially prepared horse feeds, around $5/ton, which works out

to about 12 cents per 50lb bag. The money, approximately $250,000/yr would be used to promote horse industry in

Michigan.

The Hall Of Fame

The award was started by Ted and Holly Palmer‐Chaff in 1984. They donated a silver trophy bowl that is engraved with the winners, who were nominated and voted on by the general membership at the annual meeting. The Nominees were to be ones that have made an outstanding contribution to distance riding during either a long period of time or an outstanding achievement in one year. This is to be a traveling trophy brought back annually and give to the next winners. A committee met in 1992 and recommended these guide lines be put into effect in 1993. Nominations are to be written and publicized at the annual meeting. This could be done with handouts or posters. The

candidates should be informed in advance.

Statement of Intent: The purpose of the Great Lakes Distance Riding Association Hall of Fame, is to honor persons and/or horses selected to this position for their outstanding achievements

accomplished in this sport.

Criteria: Individuals voting for these nominees should not take the above statement lightly. Time and consideration need to be given to the performances of those nominated to the Hall of

Fame. The votes cast for those nominated should not be spur‐of‐the‐moment decision

nor voted for because of sentimental reasons, nor be a popularity contest. This committee has adopted the following guidelines, which may apply to humans or animals

1. Should have accomplished some MAJOR goals in the sport.

2. Should have returned something to the sport (time, competition, etc.)

3. Consistently shows top performance.

4. Accumulated a fair amount of mileage in competition.

5. Must be a member of GLDRA in the years nominated.
