Letter from the President
From the President:
Welcome ALL members! I’m very pleased our membership is up this year. The website offers
many resources for the rider. As you participate or visit any of our rides, please let ride
management and others know that you are new. There is always someone around to give you
a hand or offer some advice.
Planning for the future is what’s going to help keep our sport alive in Michigan. We are very fortunate to have a strong
presence of rides in our state. Each ride is sanctioned with AERC and UMECRA. Some also sanction with AHA and
OAATS. This secures the date on the ride calendar. Without the enormous efforts our ride managers go through to
manage a ride, our sport would not be as strong as it is. Contact a ride manager if you would be interested in
volunteering at a ride. Some may need more assistance than others. Please be courteous and follow through with your
commitment. They rely on your help.

Hello, GLDRA members!
I hope everyone is finally getting into the season, I know I had a slow, cold, wet start!
MHC news this quarter is from the April/May meetings. April was the annual meeting
and MHC has a new president, Jan Wolfin. She is a member of the Michigan Trail Riders
Association, and her email can be found on the MTRA website, should there be any
need to contact her.
There was a re-dedication of the Michigan Shore to Shore trail on June 21. There were
also some advisory members voted in at the April meeting, one of whom is our own Dr.
Steve Halstead, retired MSU Veterinarian. Us older Great Lakes members surely
remember Dr. Steve working at many of our rides with Dr. Rae. I think he will be a valuable voice in MHC when needed!
I attended the Trails meeting which is held before the general meeting. Much discussion was held regarding grant
money. The Trails committee has a certain amount of funds available for grant requests, and this year each of 5 groups
that applied received $350 for use on trail maintenance for their particular group's interest. The Trails committee also
voted to get more involved with the MHC Horse Expo next year with speakers/programs related to trail riding. A
possible venue for a GLDRA speaker about our sport??
I did forget to ask about the talks with the Michigan Snowmobiling Association about the possibility of sharing some
trails. I will have to bring that up at the next Trails meeting. In speaking with some people in the know, they feel the
chances of this are very slim as many snowmobile trails cross private land. And at least in my area, most private land
owners do not want horses on their trails, and don't feel that snowmobiles hurt trails the way horses do.
The general meeting had a speaker, Senator Joe Hune from Fowlerville, who works on some agricultural issues in
Michigan. He says our Governor has a vision of Michigan being "the trail state" and there are several million dollars to
be devoted to trail upkeep, expansion, and connecting of some trails in Michigan. I asked what did the connecting mean
exactly...he said it would be under DNR recommendation and meant ALL trails. So probably more biking and hiking than
horse trails! There was also much concern voiced to him regarding the proposed multi use of mountain bikes on horse
trails. Many riders explained why mountain bikes and horses are a poor mix! He was a good speaker, but clueless about
horse issues in Michigan. As a group, if we have concerns about trails or multiuse of our trails, we need to find our local
or district representatives and make them aware, repeatedly, of our concerns. The Senator did say that it is true, "the
squeaky wheel gets the grease".
And finally, the Michigan Trail Riders Association will be nominated for a national lifetime achievement award by the
MHC, for over 50 years of dedication to trail riding in Michigan. That would be nice for a Michigan group to be
recognized nationally, so good luck to the MTRA!
Our president, Barb Kurti, was at this meeting with me, so she can verify or correct me if I have misspoken on any topic.
Nice to have a familiar face there!
Well, no meetings now until September, so I will see all of you at the rides, and I hope everyone has a safe, fun,
wonderful ride season!
